Still sounds like a head gasket , even though you don`t smell it . It maybe
leaking under ''extreme'' conditions. The oily film is more than likely the
result of the bad gasket. Get some one to drive behind you to see if you
have water vapors coming out your exhaust.

Hope it`s not, but think it is,

Anyone got experience with after-market gaiters? Any good? I have
reservations about putting gaiters on at all, but I'm told it's the way

Okay, I thought I throw this one out to the list because it has me stumped.
My SIIa--'69 88"--is having shifting problems. Getting into first (or
second) gear from neutral, 3rd, or 4th has become a problem, expecially
once I've driven the thing for five or ten minutes. When I depress the
clutch and move the shifter to first or second I get the ol' grinding
noise. Is this a clutch plate that is going? Perhaps heating up and not
working the right way? Any clues?

I have had similar problems - I thought it was the gearbox because of
the grinding and gnashing of teeth - it turned out to be a bad clutch -
not the plate but the spring mechanism (what does on call ths part in
english? a clutch actuator? - anyway, the bit which sits closest to the
gearbox and which revolves with the flywheel)

Of course if you have driven with such a problem for a long while, it
might have damaged some teeth on the syncro gears :-) let's hope not!

As there is no synchro on reverse, the back gear gives some indication
of clutch performance - if it changes smoothly into reverse, it could be
OK, but if it makes a grating noise, then a worn clutch which is not
disengaging fully could be the underlying cause of the problem.

Good luck.

I have gaiters on my 62 SWB and the swivels look like new.No pits, not
even a speck! The swivels are about 6yrs.old or at least that's when the
last rebuild/frame swap was done.

Hey Con,

How goes the battle? I bought a set of gaiters for Kinabalu. Just got
all my goodies last weekend. Had to rent a honking big 16' diesel cube
truck to drag it all back from Toronto. The gaiter kit from LR
supermarket looks great. Wanna come help me put it all together? You
should see how nice the Marsland galvanised frame is. It's drop dead
gorgeous. and the Turner-in-a-box is pretty impressive too. Can hardly
wait to start building.

Help! I'm looking for a safe place to park the 110 at night. The neighborhood
I'm staying in (corner of Western Ave & Belder or Belden) isn't the hottest,
and the 110 does attract its fair share of attention on the (dim) street.

I'm looking for a safe "self-park" or multi-level that will accomodate the
height of the car. Even someone's driveway in a safe neighboorhood is fine.
I'm willing to park it and take a cab back to where I'm staying...

As you all can tell, I've got the heebie-jeebies from parking it on the
street in a strange neighborhood w/out an alarm...

If *anyone* has info on the above please E-mail Direct to: spyders@aol.com

Thanks much,

pat

Don't forget to check with the auto paint stores and get flexible additive.
No joke! This is put into paint on the new urethane bumpers so it won't

The original transmission for a '59 SII would be pre-suffix. Generally
the same as a late SI transmission other than the bell housing. Some
parts are expensive but available, particularly from SI specialists in
Britain. BTW, does it have a dipstick? Suffix "A" transmissions may have
started in late '60 / early '61 and preceded SIIA introduction.

Probably the clutch is hanging up and not releasing completely when you
shift. 1st and 2nd in a pre-SIII are non-synchomesh, so they will crash
when they try to mesh unless the clutch releases completely. 3rd and 4th
are synchromesh, so the the syncronizers will get the gears turning at
the same speed before they mesh.

Try this test: while stopped in neutral with the engine running depress
the clutch and slowly try shifting into 1st, 2nd or reverse. If you feel
gear teeth grating then the clutch is not releasing. Possible causes are
a problem in the clutch hydraulics, wear in the linkage, or a bad
pressure plate.

David Cockey

Dismantle and inspect. Mine did that and I found a retaining circlip broken
which caused the main spindle to slip back and forth, knocking the OD out
of gear

>2. When I hold it in overdrive, I hear a whirring sound from the gearbox. Not

While driving around with 1, (see Above) I too heard the same sounds. I
thought that was normal bearing noise from age. I was right. Except, there
was no more ball bearings. The slipping spindle knocked the needle bearings
all off.

>2A. OD spews oil out that tiny hole in the top plate. Normal? (maybe slightly
>overfilled)
My OD used to be bone dry outside, no leaks at all! I only discovered about
1. when I found lots of oil leak recently, and a raising of oil level in
the transfer case.

Good luck
