My SIIa--'69 88"--is having shifting problems. Getting into first (or second) gear from neutral, 3rd, or 4th has become a problem, expecially once I've driven the thing for five or ten minutes. When I depress the clutch and move the shifter to first or second I get the ol' grinding noise. Is this a clutch plate that is going? Perhaps heating up and not working the right way? Any clues? As there is no synchro on reverse, the back gear gives some indication of clutch performance - if it changes smoothly into reverse, it could be OK, but if it makes a grating noise, then a worn clutch which is not disengaging fully could be the underlying cause of the problem. Good luck. -- Adrian Redmond --------------------------------------------------- CHANNEL 6 TELEVISION DENMARK (Adrian Redmond) Foerlevvej 6 Mesing DK-8660 Skanderborg Denmark --------------------------------------------------- telephone (office) +45 86 57 22 66 telephone (home) +45 86 57 22 64 telefacsimile / data +45 76 57 24 46 mobile GSM (EFP unit) +45 40 74 75 64 mobile GSM (admin) +45 40 50 22 66 mobile NMT +45 30 86 75 66 e-mail channel6@post2.tele.dk HoTMaiL (www.e-mail) channel6denmark@hotmail.com --------------------------------------------------- --------------39C6B0A79C2C15D210EAAFD3 Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Content-Description: Card for Adrian Redmond Content-Disposition: attachment; filename="vcard.vcf" begin: vcard fn: Adrian Redmond n: Redmond;Adrian email;internet: channel6@post2.tele.dk x-mozilla-cpt: ;0 x-mozilla-html: FALSE end: vcard --------------39C6B0A79C2C15D210EAAFD3-- ------------------------------[ <- Message 6 -> end | Table of Contents | <- Digest 970804 -> Archive Index | <- Browser -> ]

The neighborhood I'm staying in (corner of Western Ave & Belder or Belden) isn't the hottest, and the 110 does attract its fair share of attention on the (dim) street. I'm looking for a safe "self-park" or multi-level that will accomodate the height of the car. Even someone's driveway in a safe neighboorhood is fine. I'm willing to park it and take a cab back to where I'm staying... As you all can tell, I've got the heebie-jeebies from parking it on the street in a strange neighborhood w/out an alarm... Generally the same as a late SI transmission other than the bell housing. Some parts are expensive but available, particularly from SI specialists in Britain. BTW, does it have a dipstick? Suffix "A" transmissions may have started in late '60 / early '61 and preceded SIIA introduction. ------------------------------[ <- Message 14 -> end | Table of Contents | <- Digest 970804 -> Archive Index | <- Browser -> ]

Probably the clutch is hanging up and not releasing completely when you shift. 1st and 2nd in a pre-SIII are non-synchomesh, so they will crash when they try to mesh unless the clutch releases completely. 3rd and 4th are synchromesh, so the the syncronizers will get the gears turning at the same speed before they mesh. Try this test: while stopped in neutral with the engine running depress the clutch and slowly try shifting into 1st, 2nd or reverse. If you feel gear teeth grating then the clutch is not releasing. Possible causes are a problem in the clutch hydraulics, wear in the linkage, or a bad pressure plate.
