Just a brief note to say I see no problems with the list as it stands at the
moment.
The quality of any list is determined by the people subscribed and
contributing to it...
Therefore the less junk we see on the list from people other than those who
are an active and constuctive part of it should be kept to a minimum...
This can (I think) be better achieved in the present format.

Keep it as the outstanding resource and entertaining read that it is.

I have been going to this event for about 5 years now and it is always

Events: All weekend, Free swap meet for registered participants. I have
gotten Rover parts here in the past.

Fri. Food, a band and camping Bracket drag racing . CONSISTENCY NOT

Yes. Our wives (husbands, fiancees, roomates, etc..) still don't understand
why when we see a Serie's Landie for 10 seconds we have to talk about it for
hours.... It sounds like this:

-Oh Dear, look! an 88!!!!

- Where?

- Over there, behind the barn, about 1/4 mile ahead of us!!!!!

- How can you tell? I don't see anything...

- Yes, I can see the alpine windows!!! (Vehicle slows down to almost a
complete stop, with the traffic piling up behind wondering what is going on
(Note, the vehicle doesn't stop, since it is forbidden by the
wife-husband-fiancee-roomate, etc...))

While pulling away,

- Wow! I think it was a 64... I wonder who owns it?
- ....
- Must be John's 88" I heard of him on the net...
- ...
(An hour later...)
- I wonder if it has Free-wheeling hubs or not?
- OH dear, don't start that thread again...
- No, no, no... it must be Bob's parts vehicle...

(Later)

- I wonder if it had an overdrive or not...
- Darling, it's time to sleep... you can dream about it if you want to, but
do it silently...
- Yep, goodnight, .... We have to take that backroad again tomorrow...

Subject: Re: Proper LR Newsgroup

Actually, I think extremely poorly of it.

Tradiditionally, the old newsgroup format was useful when message civility
and content could be more-or-less guaranteed by the old "gentleperson's
agreement" - a.k.a.: don't mess around or your sysop will cut you off.

Nowadays, many POPs don't carry newsgroups because of the volumes of
postings involved, and the idiotic "spamming" tends to make them
less-usable because of the crud you have to wade through. Also, the annual
deluges of stupid-mail from the college freshmen is something I don't miss.

As this is basically a subscription-only medium, I feel it's got a far
higher signal-to-noise ratio than any USENET newsgroup I've seen in the
past 5 years or so.

Leave well enough alone - if you need an example of what newsgroups turn
into, take a look at any of the rec.ham.radio ones.

As a matter of fact, you're right - the sight of a Series Rover is a rare
thing indeed.

In the 2.5 or thereabouts years I've been driving mine daily, I think I've
seen a Seris Rover on the road exactly 3 times - 1 lightweight, one 88 SW
and a 109 Safari. I can even tell you what colors they were.....

In short, and sadly, yes they are that rare here.

A proper news group will have lots of Toyota, Jeep, and whatever owners
dropping in and saying how much better their cars are then Rovers. You
will have lots of people toying with the purchase of a Land/Range Rover
asking extreamly basic questions over and over and over. You will get the
occasional exowner of a poorly built new car telling everyone over and over
again how bad these cars are.

Bottom line is that the noise level will go up considerably and a lot of
people on this list will find the noise level totally unacceptable. This
and other lists will continue and the majority of people will probably do
more than visit the LW news site a couple of times before giving up.

This thought comes up every year or so. Its generally proposed by someone
who is recent to the list (A year or less). A couple of newbees will
support the idea, but the vast majority who goes through this every year or
so will not think its a good idea.

Try living in Nebraska. I only know of two other Series Rovers, and

both owners. I'm encouraging them by driving my Rover where they have

Subject: Southdown USA Information

With apologies to all for commercial content.

I saw Jim Pappas Sunday and bugged him on Southdown USA's plans. He
wishes he could wave a magic wand and be producing today, but for a
variety of reasons, its happening slower than he would like.

Product. Southdown USA will manufacture a full line of Southdown
Snorkels, Sill protectors and underbody armour. The Snorkels are made
from Injection molded technology, and look in Jim's words far higher
quality than the competition. The Sill protectors go one step beyond
the competition and provide better protection. The underbody armour is
just as you all have seen.

Manufacturing will be done in the USA. Lots of companies have
expressed an interest in building these products. He is vetting them
before asking a a few to actually bid for the business. Its a slow
process but the last thing Jim wants to do is get off on the wrong
foot with any customer because of delivery or other problems.

Sales: There will be no sales direct to the Public. All LR products
will be sold through places like RN, AB, Britpac etc. Southdown's
products for j**ps will be sold through j**p specialists.

Jim is hoping to get the production lines rolling as soon as possible.
If I hear anything more I'll pass it on.

with her parents to Montreal. Her mother remarked "what is that piece of
junk up ahead" and then went on to how vehicles like the pair ahead (Yves

the brake lights come on, they slowed down whereupon my firend waved madly

Personally Steve I think the idea stinks! This mailing list is rather
like a Series truck - if it works, why tamper with it.

Call me conservative, reactionary, stodgy or otherwise, but I have
chosen this list whilst I have dropped all the newsgroups to which i
used to subscribe - because the noise level was higher than my gearbox,
and if I want to read so many stupid questions about a Land Rover, I
already have a 5 year old to ask them.

I run a business, so i get plenty of junk mail and "get-rich-quick"
spam, sorting, reading, and deleting 80 mails a day from the LRO list is
childsplay compared to weeding my digital courtyard of all the crud,
chaff, and junk which gets littered there by who-knows-who.

I can see the idea of "extra" facilities, but every time someone
suggests a good one, it usually gets realised on someones server, or by
Bill himself, so I don't really see the need to go Usenet. Far from it,
the relative benefits of this moderated, rather select list much
outweigh the advantages of "going public".

In the end it's the content which matters, not the technology. I work in
television, one of the worlds most updated, upgraded, improved,
modernised industries after the space race and weapon technology - the
leaps and bounds techno-wise in our industry over the past 10 years have
hardly contributed to better content, on the contrary, tv programming
worldwide is becoming 95% junk which wastes our otherwise valuable lives
by giving us experiences which we can do without, and diverting us from
experiences which we really need. That's how I view the Internet, hold
fast to the content and b#%%?r the technology.

This list is hand-made, old fashioned, prone to breakdowns, and full of
really nice people - of course if it was the latest opel or VW we were
discussing, then a Usenet solution might be more appropriate, but
frankly I think that the culture of this list matches the culture of its
subject, and its members admirably.

That's my opinion, FWIW - but I am sure this subject will turn up again
in six months after the next dose of free-wheel hubs, engine
conversions, winches and list-splitting suggestions - I may even have
the same opinion then.

Two quick questions about a 1990 County:

A) What size tires does this use? Are there suitable replacements
besides Michelins?

B) The radio is frozen and displays a numeric code ("362", or something
like that). I have heard that Range Rover radios are problematic - would I
be better suited to simply replace the radio? Any suggestions?

Thanks

Most newsgroups are moderated which means you can filter mail and easily boot people off (e.g. spam postings etc..). However one advantage of a news group is that it cannot arbitarily chuck people off without good cause. Private email servers are very much open to the vagaries of those that run the system - "if they don't like your face...." (I'm sure that I'm treading a thin line here and I may well end up getting booted off this mail list!!).

As to viewers, well I was assuming that the connection was being done through 'standard' channels using normal Nutscape or IE. I generally use the Netscape reader and find that news viewing is very simple (by the way I do this through the works account as well).

I've tried both routes and must admit my preference for the proper newsgroup but each to his own.... Thourght I would ask anyway...

Where I work, I have e-mail access only, I cannot read newsgroups, and I
cannot surf the web. Yes, I have Netscape, It's called our 'intranet'
viewer. Each department has it's own page, there is no external access.
I currently belong to 5 or 6 mailing lists and have yet to get kicked
off of one of them, or even flamed. While at my last position however, I
participated in several newsgroups, and formed an opinion that moderated
newsgroups were highly censored, while unmoderated newsgroups were the
playground for spam artists and adolescent ravings. But, that's just my
opinion.

BTW, our 'standard' channel for viewing e-mail was elm on a unix box
until about 3 months ago. Not all companies have the access you're
obviously so used to :)

Victoria British Columbia, seems to be the exception for North
America. I see on average one to two Series Landy's per day. Even a
few series 1's are still prowling the streets. Every week there are a
few for sale either in Victoria or Vancouver.

Get yourself a set of LT225/75-R16 Dunlop Radial Rover RV's.
A good mix of highway and back road tire.

If frozen from disconnecting the battery, the radio needs to be
reprogrammed with the owner's 4-digit code. If you don't have
the code, take the serial number of your radio and the RR VIN
number to your dealer, they can call and get the code for you.
The radio itself is of a high quality and it is not necessary
to replace it, or dealing with the mounting and wiring of a
 new unit to 6 speakers.

PS- Shouldn't these kind of questions be on the rro list,
instead of annoying the lro's?? =:0

In which case rival listservers are set up. You see this with CIX Conferences
(might private email is on CIX - which has its own conferencing system).
For some reason there are 3 dinosaur conferences! Also its very easy to set
new conferences up, but they all have to be moderated. I moderate the geology
conf, but there's never anything controversial going on in there - I just
list uploaded files,etc!

Not everywhere has News set up. I can see why Work don't have it. It would
be too distracting + add too many problems (all those megs of spam filling
the system).

Richard (ex-Gurkha SIII 109 FFR - with 2 matching batteries!)

PS: The box of sulphuric acid goes to the tip tonight. House inspection later
this week, so out goes the old oil, dead drive shaft, and other bits of
of dead Land Rover! :-(

Okay!!!!

I take your point...

I'm not totally convinced but I take your point.
I suppose my main gripe was the difficulty of trying to join the mail together on replies to postings. It seems that I often get replies mailed to me before the original posting. I also get replies out of order or scattered through other mail entries.

Perhaps it might be best if this mail list was converted into a private newsgroup using a private news server. It could be done..... but let it lie at the moment. Let's continue onto other matters...

Thanks for putting up with me!
