I seem to be doing quite well: not only are the new temp. gauges, but I managed
to free my passenger-side vent last night. Nice day, so I thought I'd look at
it. This has never worked. Virtually dismantled the whole thing - including
the two hinges (this is what took the most time), and found that one of
the bolts had seized. Both bolts were a nice rusty colour, but the seized one
was, of course, the most inaccessible. Lots of WD 40, and rebuilt with
copper slip. An hour's work and I'm satisfied! :-)
I bet I won't notice the difference, either!

Anyway, I'm looking how to fit this radio in, again...
I thought about fitting the speakers (I have two small ones) on the corner
brackets in the hardtop - just behind the doors. One of my seatbelts is
mounted to one of these.
The left "bracket" is actually a diagonal. The position of this is well placed
for the speaker.
The right "bracket" is more of a corner piece - and iron - ie. its nice
and rusty. Does anyone have a part number for a bracket like the left side,
but for the right? My parts book doesn't cover hardtops - just SW and hoods.

Not that I'm shying away from any metal-working or anything...

Richard (ex-Gurkha SIII 109 FFR + 2 temp gauges + 2 vents)

In the VIN/serial numbers used from 1962 to 1979 the first 3 digits
indicate model, the remaining five digits is the serial number (starting
with 00001) and the suffix letter indicate design modification. This
serial numbering scheme has no indication of year of manufacture /
model-year.
The C-suffix chassis was introduced around April 1966 and manufactured
for about a year (until April 1967).

Ketil Oftedahl

Mark: Thanks for your info. I am considering an oil cooler ( I saw one in the
Jegs Hi-Po catalog that goes in line with the radiator hoses, which would
give you an thermostatically controlled cooling, but obviously depends on a
non-overheating engine). The real culprit is the marginal Rover/Buick 215 oil
system design. Cheers. Andy Blackley

Are there still plans for a Continental Divide trip in August? I was
planning on going next week, but it looks like that trip might not go
through, and if the dates worked out I would love to join the August trip.

Just wondering if the major is terminally ill again. I have not received
any mail for several days, and there seems to be no activity at the web
site...though the Australian list seems to be working ok?

From: Ian Harper/Donna-Claire McLeod <tantramar@golden.net>
Subject: Distributor problems

In a desperate attempt to find out why I was leving a trail of smoke
behind me wherever I went, and asphyxiating the kids in the bargain (I
eventually fixed it for now with a new O-ring in the Carb) I took out
the distributor, as the points had worn very fast (only a year since I
changed them last!!!) and discovered that the contact gap on each of the
four lobes of the cam gave readings from .018 (.015 being normal) to
.008.

I checked the cam by replacing it from another distibutor (from my SII
engine....unfortunate as that dist is a little too short to fit in) and
it was OK, likewise for the breaker plate etc. (these all gave good
readings when placed in the other Dist)

The only thing I can think of that might be replaceable is the drive
bushing is gone, or the shaft. It doesn't seem to wobble but then
again......

Do I have to get a whole new distributor, or can I replace either the
driveshaft or the bushing? Does anyone have part #'s for these? It's
for a '74 S3 2 1/4 Petrol.

Cheers, Ian

I see (or actually, don't) that the Major went west the same day that Bill
C. departed for the UK. If any real-timers are getting this, please E-mail
back. Otherwise, I'll talk to you again on the 25th when Bill (and
presumably the Major) return. Cheers

Does the radiator fan attached to the belt system run constantly with the
belt or does it have a clutch that engages and disengages? If it runs off
a clutch, can I splice into the line with a switch to disengage during
water crossings, etc. If not how do you remove the fan to install an
electric fan instead??

Thanks!!!
