If so, any suggestions >would be appreciated. Should be no problem. The only difference between the two steering wheel shafts is that the older spoked design needed a groove around the circumference of the shaft at the top to fix the wheel. Back in '75 I went the other way and fitted an older styled wheel to my '70 IIa. As I remember, other than the groove modification, it fit right on. Anthony R. Date: Wed, 09 Jul 1997 20:40:48 +0200 From: Paul Oxley <paul@adventures.co.za> Subject: Free Wheel Hubs Hah! Just when you thought it was safe... No, this is not round II of that well worn saga, just an interesting point. Bought a "new" Landy the other day, a very nice "R6" (Series IIIs Stage I with a SA Leyland developed 6 cyl instead of the V8) stationwagon. Had a couple of negatives - one being free wheeling hubs (you KNOW how I feel about them) - which I am busy rectifying :-). Well bought new front wheel flanges, fitted them, tested them, and Hey there! 90Km/h and it feels like the van wants to shake itself to bits! To cut a long story relatively short I removed the front prop shaft and the noise went away, Hmmm! Turns out that FWHs reliably ruin front prop shafts in the following manner. When the hubs are disengaged (most of the time or there would be no point fitting them in the first case!) the prop shaft is idle (I know, I know!). When you drive over rough roads or bumps the vibrations and shock impacts on the male/female joint in the prop shaft in one point all the time, making for a loose joint. When you do eventually engage the hubs or, as I did, reinstall solid wheel flanges, the prop shaft rotates permanently again. Except it's no longer running true! This rough running now transmits itself to the seal and bearings on the front diff (Uh oh!), down the side/half shafts to the solid wheel flanges, and to the front wheels. Causing accelerated wear and tear all round and a hideous amount of road noise and shaking in the steering. Solution: New front prop shaft (Ouch!). Result: Smooth as a babies backside, quiet as a mouse (OK, I'm not expecting you to believe this all), and the same topend as with the FWHs. Date: Wed, 9 Jul 1997 21:01:57 -0400 (EDT) From: John Cassidy <rovah@agate.net> Subject: Need a Quality Axe? Slight Commercial Content In an effort to find Maine/US made products of a high quality for members of The Downeast Land Rover Club, I have been discussing axes with the Snow and Nealley Company, of Bangor Maine. They have made axes since 1864, and offer a diverse product lineup. I approached Derek Husson at Snow and Nealley to see if he could offer an incentive to our club members to purchase their product(read discount!), and he graciously obliged! I'd like to pass this offer along to all Land Rover club members world wide, as I think Snow and Nealley's products are top notch! Before I get flamed, neither myself or the Downeast Land Rover Club profits from this special offer in any way. I just want to see a home town company with a good product get their wares into the hands of customers. As a Land Rover owner, I love the opportunity to buy stuff for my truck at a discount. They are offering two specials. 1.) Hudson Bay Camping Axe. This is a great all around axe, and myself and lots of my friends have it. Special price is $28.95, which includes a free leather belt sheath. Regular price is $34.95 without a sheath. My Hudson Bay Camping Axe lives in my Range Rover full time! 2.) Splint and Kindle set. Normally $54.95, special $44.95. You can view their products on their web site at http://www.sntools.com These special prices are only for members of Land Rover clubs. Special price is good until July 31st. Call Snow and Nealley and mention the Downeast Land Rover Club! Ask for Derek Husson, Customer Service Manager. Cheers! From: "Beckett, Ron" <rbeckett@nibupad.telstra.com.au> Subject: LR Manuals in Central London? Date: Thu, 10 Jul 1997 15:43:00 +1000 One of my colleagues is flying to London this weekend and has offered to buy me the Rangie workshop manuals I need. Would any of our UK based list members be able to recommend a shop at which he might be able to pick the manuals up and which is close to where he will be staying, viz. the Marlborough Hotel in Bloomsbury Rd, near Tottenham Court Road? Phone and fax numbers would be nice too so I can arrange pre-payment via credit card.
