Subject: Re: Distributor problems

Sounds to me like the bushings on the distributor are shot. There are 3
ways to fix this: (none of them involving repair of the original
distributor, unfortunately...)

1. (and my favourite) - get a Pertronix Ignitor or the like and replace the
points with a magnetic or optical setup. Then the shaft wobble becomes a
moot point - these things work fine with less-than-perfect distributors.

2. Go to a junkyard and find a replacement distributor from most older
British iron like MGs, Triumphs or the like. Swap over the distributor
weights and springs to change the advance curve to match the original.

As I've been told, the way to tell if the bushings are shot is to grab the
shaft and give it a good wobble - if it moves at all forget it.

3. Buy a new one (last resort only - the new ones being sold are the 45D4
general-replacements that don't work as well as the originals.

Warning: I've not done this only talked to a mechanic about it and considered doing
it.

The fan runs both on the belt and through a thermo-clutch at the front. No you
can splice a switch in (that I'm aware of).

To remove the fan requires reaching in behind the fan (between fan and pulley)
and loosening a single counter threaded "nut". This is a tricky job because
a standard tool will not easily fit in there. LR apparently has a "special tool # ??????
for the job). A mechanic told me he grabs the pulley with a monster clamp and
works a 1 11/16" (? could be wrong size) spanner in behind the pulley.

Jeremy

Yesterday, I sent a query to the lro list asking about brackets in the
hardtop. No replies, I see!

Well, lastnight, I noticed that the left-hand bracket (ie. the one I want, but
for the write) still had a label on it with a part number (doh!). Looked it up
in the parts book on the off-chance, and its there! Its the page with the
seatbelts rather than the hardtop.

I've since seen a photo of an inertial reel kit, and these come with similar
brackets...

So, it seems that my hardtop was on a truck with inertial reels, although one
of the brackets has been swapped. I'm fairly certain the hardtop is ex-RAF.
You can tell the RAF like their comforts, can't you?

So is anyone on the list getting the digest form, or just the real time
format? I have done the unsubscribe/subscribe thingy with apparent
success (major sent me some mail saying it had been successful), but
still no list. And 'TOdays List' on the website is from Sunday.

ON a different note. Has anyone seen an *old* version of the Series 1
manual, preferably one that deals exclusively with the 80"? The manual I
have is a reprint from the 60s, and is a bit less than informative on
some subjects.

Subject: Series Truck Needed for Microbudget Movie
Date: Fri, 11 Jul 1997 14:59:48 -0500

I've been following this list for quite some time now and its helped me
mechanically in many ways, now I'm hoping you guys and girls can help me
again.

We will be shooting a semi-fake documentary in southeastern Wyoming
USA(Laramie-ish) in August. My original idea was to use my IIA in the
production but I'm sad to say it is having head problems (valves). Normally
I would simply fix it and be on my way but the money is tied up in the
production equipment needed to make the movie.
The movie is very basically about the recovery of certain documents from a
plane crash that occured in the 1950's. The plane was never really
recovered because it is almost inaccessable. This inaccesability requires
that a huge portion of the shoot be devoted to off-road situations. You
have heard of road movies? (Thelma and Louise...etc) Well this is an
off-road movie. Anyway, for reasons that need not be explained to followers
of this list I would really like to use a series truck. If this turns out
to be impossible then I'll have to use whatever is available, but I thought
I would give it a try.
Because this is a labor of love and not a business nobody gets paid (myself
included). But If there is anyone out there in the area who has a few days
in early August and is willing to allow use of a vehicle, very meager
compensation is available. Let me repeat meager....

Thanks again,
Joe Ankeny Jankeny@cgwg.com

As someone who does pay for phone time, I have written to Terrance with my
opinions about it. Luckily the time zones meant that I did not get 1.9Mb at
premium rates. Unbelievable. What was it? After several minutes download I was
unable to open it in any form. A *.max file is Kinetix 3D Studio Max format -
how many people have that ??

HI all,

So the engine in Emerson seems to be running fine so far after about 300
miles on the rebuilt head. COming home tonight though, he has started to
 make soft irregular <phudt..phudt.phutd......phutd...phutd.phutd...>
sounds from the tail pipe. There is also a bit of a kind of
chortling/popping sound happening on overrun or when slowing down. I am
going to check the tappets again tomorrow. I am using a Crane ignition
and have it set to 3 degrees as per the manual. The motor used to do
this in the past, and I had thought now that it was caused by the
thrashed valve seats caused by the miss-timing from the toasted vacuum
advance.

Oh, if you answer this, please mail it to me, as i am still not getting
the digest.
