From: cutts@mindspring.com (Bill Cutts) Subject: '97 Disco A/C Problem Date: Mon, 07 Jul 1997 13:55:56 GMT The air conditioning on my Disco has decided to become rather flaky. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. My local dealer has not been able to fix it, debugging intermittent problems is a bit of a problem at times :-( A clue, I have an SE-7 with a front and rear air conditioner and either both work or both don't work. Based on this (and that it's a Land Rover) I expect an electrical problem. The local dealer replaced the compressor but that didn't help. A friend with the same vehicle is beginning to see the same problem. Can anyone help with the diagnosis and cure? Check the grounding of the system - from what I remember hearing here some Discos had a problem withintermittent ground leads in the panel which caused all sorts of flakies. If they're running on the same cooling circuit (1 compressor and the like), I'd suspect a bad low-pressure switch or marginally low Freon pressure causing the low-pressure sensor to kick out the compressor clutch. aj"Just my .02 worth"r ------------------------------[ <- Message 5 -> end | Table of Contents | <- Digest 970708 -> Archive Index | <- Browser -> ]

Any comments or >thoughts from you on this? My comment would be don't try, you might succeed. Halfshafts are designed weak for a reason: they serve as a "fuse" for the differential and the rest of the drive train. They are easily replaced, relatively inexpensive and can prevent serious damage to more costly machinery. Eric Zipkin, Jeff Meyer, Dixon and I recently made an interesting discovery in Dale Despry's driveway. While draining a little more of Lake Ontario out of FINSUP's rear diff, a chunk of halfshaft dropped into Eric's hand. We immediately pulled the halfshafts and found them to be intact. This was leftover from a previous break. (Yes, the diff had been pulled on each previous shaft break--this piece had apparently temporarily welded itself to the casing .) The leftover had also obviously been "processed" by a quick run through the diff gears. We only recognized it as a piece of shaft because of slight machining marks outlining what used to be splines. I for one am glad that these things are made out of (relatively) soft metal... RoverOn! jab == Jeffrey A. It fits' exactly between the existing seat brackets meaning I can change back to a seat pretty quickly if desired. It is slightly longer than the seat box, but doesn't foul my straight Fairey overdrive lever. (The "bent inward & back" Toro lever might not clear.) Well made, and it provides lockable storage and an armrest. The only downcheck: I lost the use of the cupholder that I had bolted to the tranny tunnel. Still looking for a satisfactory replacement. Oh and one more thing: though I'm pretty sure that the Tuffy won't leak in a rainstorm, when you're sitting up to your waist in Lake Ontario the box is most definitely "NOT WATERPROOF." The orange or yellow lamp on the dash should go on when the engine temperature is high enough to warrant closing the choke. My original cable knob also read "cold start." Perhaps the second one was installed when the orgininal broke. There's a fitting on the firewall that makes it a bear to replace the original, so the PO might have simply bypassed and drilled another hole in the dash. Or perhaps he or she didn't like leaning over to manipulate the choke. My original cable broke last year in my daily driver. The Genuine Parts replacement is the Leyland version, complete with goofy graphics on the knob - my Triumph has the same one. Unfortunately, the orginal knob was glued/pressed/whatever onto the cable and could not be swapped out. Best wishes with the II-A. I love mine for daily use. After having problems with under-reading fuel and temp guages a while ago, I removed the steering wheel, loosened the instrument panel, disconnected the speedo drive, accessed the voltage stabiliser and adjusted it to give a more accurate reading on the guages. Despite cranking up the voltage a bit too much, all was well until last week when the guages decided to make up for lost time and are now over-reading! Oh well, back to the tool box again- it looks like it is either time to wind the voltage back down or lash out and buy a new voltage stabiliser. Such is life. Date: Mon, 7 Jul 1997 19:21:22 -0400 From: Steve Rochna <75347.452@compuserve.com> Subject: Burnt valves Hi all: After limping most of the way home from Down East I finally decided to ri= p into the problem yesterday evening. #3 and #4 cylendars both had poor compression (60 - 70) so I figured a new head gasket was in order. Not wanting to hear about spending the long weekend with dirty fingernails I didn't rush the order. Well I figured that Sunday night was long enough = to wait and removed the head. For one the bolts varied greatly in how much torque was required to free them - some took a pipe on the ratchet and others hardly any pressure without the pipe. This morning when I got the old valve spring compressor out and looked at= the valves the story was told (completely I hope). The #1 exhaust valve looked barely passable and that was the good one, #2 was a bit worse. #3= and #4 were not only pitted but actually bent looking at the points where= they contact the seat. Another phone call and more money should solve th= e problem and get me an unleaded head. The next delay will be getting the head to the shop (I hate when someone else works on my Rover) for installation of the new seats and regrinding the intake valves. After th= at I should be good to go. Take care Steve Rochna -- bummin' a ride Va. SNIP I’ve heard and read this before too and always thought it made sense, halfshaft breaks, diff and gearbox spared. But what I don’t understand is why the Series III 109’s were introduced with the salisbury axle and all of a sudden it’s, presto changeo, no more broken half shafts. Where is this weak link now? As far as I know the SIII 88 and 109’s have always had the same gearbox yet the 109 gets the much stronger rear end. I’ve broken my fair share of half shafts so I’m curious. Aronson, 76255,2146 TO: Land Rover Digest, INTERNET:lro@Land-Rover.Team.Net DATE: 7/7/97 10:50 AM RE: Copy of: James Small - Choke Cables My '66 II-A has the choke cable under the dash, and that's the original location. The orange or yellow lamp on the dash should go on when the engine temperature is high enough to warrant closing the choke. Cheers I have one of Steve's trays. The quality is just as Sandy says. Only shortcomeing: The design (at least of mine) doesn't take into account the hand brake cross-bar for a left-hand drive Rover. This means the tray sits a little proud and the cover doesn't sit flush to seatbox. Eric Zipkin can has a solution -- using his "special Rover tool Mark II" -- that is free to Zippytow Platinum members, but it leaves the tray less asthetically pleasing. RoverOn! jab == Jeffrey A. There's another solution, if you want to keep the seat, however. I've been thinking about this because I want to ditch the LH underseat tool box for a second fuel tank, but need that storage. The solution is to put a tool chest behind the seat bulkhead (in an 88"). I've been eyeballing mine, and I think I can put a 6" wide x width of tub floor x height of wheel well tool chest without compromising the clearance of the foreward (SW seats) passengers.
