Date: Fri, 4 Jul 1997 10:08:35 -0500 (CDT) From: David Kurzman <kurzman@ix.netcom.com> Subject: Roving again! Long time lurker checking in: After getting dicked around by Mr. Baran of NYC I finally got me a Rover again! It's a '66 88 with tail and liftgate. All stock except for the Rochester carb which is going to be replaced with a Zenith from a 1983 low milage 109 so it should be OK. I've got to tune it up and go through the brakes. I'm going to let a local spring shop replace the bushings as this looks like a pain in the butt. Yesterday (95 degrees) I changed the oil and filter (screw on conversion is definitely on the list), and changed the gear oil in the tranny, the transfer case, and the front and rear diffs. Needless to say I was completely covered in 90 weight. That's the downside. The upside was that I discovered the when all you can smell is 90 weight, cheap beer tastes fine. It's back to Busch for me! That ought to save me enough for a rag top and hoop set. I knew I was really back in Roverdom when on my first test drive, I got my first non-wave from a shiny new Disco. ;-) Thanks again to all of the good people (especially in Canada) that helped out with my L-R search. Hope to see a bunch of you East coasters at Penlan Farm and maybe at Berkely Plantation for British Car Day. Best, Dave "Pete" Kurzman Richmond, Va. From: eheite@dmv.com Date: Fri, 4 Jul 1997 12:55:36 -0500 Subject: Aftermarket deluxe seat backs The saga of the aftermarket Series IIA seat backs continues. Under the vinyl, there were two sets of holes, one of which was threaded for the quarter inch fine threads of the original seat back pivot bolts. The larger hole, which is not threaded, lines up to a second, previously unused, hole in the IIA seat back bracket. Before I found the actual threaded pivot hole, I put a jack nut in the second hole, without first trying to figure out what was going on. Does anyone know the function of the second hole? While it was reported reliably by others that the threaded hole on the aftermarket seat back was wrong, I can report that my seat back came through with the correct threads for the original Rover bolts. However, I must agree with those who suggest that perhaps the aftermarket seats are somewhat inferior in overall quality to the originals. In fact, they suck. _______ . |___|__\_== . | _ | | --] Ned Heite, ><DARWIN> Tedium . =(O)-----(O)= Camden, DE 19934 / \ / \ Laudamus --------------------------------- "Baby" Series IIA 88" 2.25L petrol Land Rover (3 main bearing) Explore Icelandic wool: http://www.dmv.com/~iceland--------- Recent research: http://home.dmv.com/~eheite/index.html ---- ------------------------------[ <- Message 5 -> end | Table of Contents | <- Digest 970705 -> Archive Index | <- Browser -> ]

If, so how much more are they? Please give quote in US dollars. Have you ever heard of a technique using cryogenics to strenghten metal? There was a program on either the Discovery channel or the Learning channel about using extremely LOW temps. for specific times to add strenght to metals. It had something to do with aligning elements or molecules. I believe they took them down (fast or slow don't remember) and thawed the slowly, I remember correctly. I have thought about trying it with carbon dixoide(dry ice) and just seeing what the results would be. Any comments or thoughts from you on this? It would only cost a minimal amount as dry ice isn't that expensive. From: lndrvr@ldd.net (BRIAN WILLOUGHBY) Subject: Series II Defroster Vents Date: Fri, 4 Jul 1997 19:06:17 -0500 Does anyone out there have any idea what the proper finish is for the windscreen defroster vents that were used on Smith's heater-equipped Series IIs? The previous owner sanded and repainted mine and I can't determine the what type of paint should be applied. I know that Smith's finished the shroud on the heater core itself in a black wrinkle paint though I can't find any evidence of this on the vents (either inside or out). Any assistance is most appreciated. Thanks in advance, Brian. ------------------------------[ <- Message 10 -> end | Table of Contents | <- Digest 970705 -> Archive Index | <- Browser -> ]

Even the hub units were kept as standard LR parts so you dont actually need a whole front axle to make the change. Minerva of course may have used a totally different system.
