Rob: I cant give a part number for the 60A unit, but they are all the same
generic rebuilts. The 80A and larger output have a larger case. I have one of
these on my Range Rover. These are NOT direct bolt on replacements, and
require some fiddling and shiming to work, but are really pretty easy to do
and far superior to the Lucas or even Bosch (IMHO). You may also need to save
your old pulley or source a new one as many "rebuilts" from NAPA etc. come
without a pulley. I suggest you use the Majors archives and the search engine
set for Delco+alternators. You'll find a treasure trove of info. Good luck.

I hated to miss the OVLR B'day party but I had to choose between OVLR and
Owl's Head. I was wondering when folks from the south were planning on
heading out. I and a friend will be setting off Thur morning from Utica
New York. We will be on I-90, I290, I495 and I95. If you see us we will
be on CB channel 21 and I will be on 145.67 simplex (N7WBO).

Hope to see you there

P.S. since the major is up now, lets here all of the OVLR stories....

Subject: Transfer case strength

I've got a '73 88 Series III hybrid that currently has a 700r4 automatic,
NP208 transfer case, and a 4.3L chevy on it. The NP208 that was installed is
awfully long and thus had to be significantly lowered (I don't like the
setup). So, what I was wondering is if the original Rover transfer case can
take the power of the 4.3L without exploding... Also, if I also swap back in
a Fairley overdrive, will it be able to take the extra torque?

Thanks,

I regret that I am unable to attend the OVLR Birthday party and the
Downeast Rally, but more pressing issues keep me at home these weekends
(at least my >truck< got to go to Downeast last year).I even blew off
British Car Day at Bowie, Md.; almost around the corner from me. Perhaps
some day....
My 109 was kept busy hauling about 2500 pounds of tree limbs and yard
trimmings to the recyclers...the ride and handling was like a Lincoln
Continental, but windage was a b**ch. It works to earn its keep.

I hope all who attend enjoy themselves and have a safe time.

Probably. IMHO, it depends upon your right foot. The t-case is the strongest
part of the searies gearbox assy. You might want to try an LT-230 Range
Rover, Disco, Defender 'case. You might even be able to hook up the
bulletproof NP205 case that is shorter - you just need a right output model
from a Dodge (I think Dodges are rt. output)

Also, if I also swap back in

This is almost a guaranteed "not hardly." It can break with a tired 2.25L.

I normally only mail to the South African mailing list but as the price of accessories in this
country is so high I thought I would try this list instead for a bit of help.

I am looking for a bonnet spare wheel bracket mounting kit as well as a snorkel for a
Defender 200 TDi. I have had prices from the UK for these but at our exchange rate the cost
is equally as exorbitant. I feel that sourcing this from perhaps Australia may be cheaper.
could possibly contract to get prices on this??
I have done it for my sparewheel in a cheap way. I took the
inspiration from the lightweight, the strap is an old safety
belt, and the metalparts are from a scoutswarehouse, it is
similary to those used for Nato Army Basic Fixins.

Easyer to have a look than to explain:

I'd also recommend the NP 205 from a late 70's chevy. Much shorter and
stronger. My question though
is how can you use them with original axles or have you got a center diff
rear axle? The driveline angle from a center output tranxfer case to a
Rover rear would be severe. If you have original axles you might want to
try a dana 18 transfer case from an early jeep with offset rear. Advance
adapters makes the pieces for this and even has an overdrive, though your
tranny has one already.

We saw 2 series rovers within 10 minutes of each other on Sunday. Both were

This may be old news to you all but I was in Hobbyco (Sydney
hobby shop) last week and saw a Tamiya plastic kit for the
SAS Land Rover Pink Panther in 1/35 scale. Tamiya 1/35th
Militiary Miniature series kit No. 76.

This would convert to the Australian SAS LR quite easily (I can
provide pix of the Aussie beast if required). The major difference
seems to be that the Aussie SAS fitted two spare wheels
vertically in fron of the mudguards (wings/fenders).

Subject: Salisbury diff backlash gone (repost)
Date: Wed, 25 Jun 1997 08:44:51 +0200 (MET DST)

Hello Rovers,
since my message doesn't seem to have made it to the list (at least I
didn't get it) I'll repost it now as the major is back on duty.
Apologies for those who get it twice now.

Some weeks ago I asked here about how to get rid of the backlash
in my Salisbury rear diff. After unsuccessfully trying to get the
diff out myself, I phoned Max, my mechanic. Since he had very much
to do we ended up with the arrangement that I could come to his
workshop on Saturday, do as much as possible myself and he would
help me when I get stuck.
We had some struggle to get the diff out by widening the casing
with a spring compressor (I'd recommend to get or build something
like the special tool mentioned in the manual) but the rest came
apart farely easy.
When I pulled the seal behind the drive flange it turned out to be
a leather seal. I didn't know that LR used them since 1989! May be
it was put in later while Brumml served his time in the British
forces in Berlin.
We decided that we would need to add about 0.2mm to the shim pack
behind the bearing race of the input gear. But were to get these
shims at Saturday around lunchtime? Max didn't have anything like
that in his workshop, since he is by no means a Land Rover
specialist (he would starve to death if he only would work on LR's).
I ended up cutting one out of the bottom of a paint can. No great
problem and it worked just fine. The diff itself didn't have any
internal backlash, so I didn't take it apart.
Putting everything together was not to hard either, except that the
bearing race needed some grease and a bigger hammer to get it back
into its place. The diff went right in with the spring compressor
trick.
Now the diff clonk is still there, but much quieter and the backlash
is down from about 35mm to 10mm a the drive flange circumfence.

Hope this helps somebody,
Franz

I saw this kit in Beatties (UK high street toyshop)!
I guess they must have just got some new stock in - there were a number of
pink panthers.

Every so often, I have a look see if there are any SIII's I could FFR-ise.
No luck yet.

Subject: Re: Transfer case strength

We do not use the TH 700R4 in any conversions because of it's shape. But we
do make a conversion to fit the Camero TH 350 on to the LT 230 Transfer case,
this is the constant 4WD setup used in the RR, 90, 110 and Disco which is
available in a variety of ratios, ie 1.667, 1.41, 1.222 and 1.003.

The only problem with using the LT 230 on your vehicle is the fact that the
front axle has UJ's not CV's, thus you need to use a Stage 1 V8 or RR front
axle.

The Series Transfer case will take a petrol 4.3 if used sensibly but if you
do this conversion don't use it with an overdrive, it's far too weak. We make
a high ratio transfer case for the series LR which will raise the high range
only, see attached file.

David Ashcroft
