I'll be in the Eureka,CA area for a few days next week and wondered if
anyone could recommend
a restaurant or two in the area.
Regards,
Steve

Hi folks- I cc'd this to the list so others will know I sent mail to
majordomo-owner (Bill, I presume), and won't deluge him with similar
messages. It looks like several of us are having the same problem...

I've not received the digest for several days- I tried re-subscribing
yesterday, and still nothing today. Perhaps there's a problem that needs
fixing. I've been keeping up with the list using the web-page version- Nice
feature. Thanks for keeping all of this running!

I stopped getting mail from the list, so I sent Majordomo mail to see if it
had kicked me off. I got no response, so I sent mail to resubscribe. I got
no response to that, so, on the theory that it might simply not like me, I
subscribed to a different address, and have yet to get a response. Is it just
me, or has the major died? If this gets out on the list, would someone one
please let me know?

Thanks

David

Subject: SIIA Gearbox Queries

I am having problems with my gearbox rebuild and have two queries which
i would be very grateful for help with. The vehicle to which the 'box
is fitted is '68 petrol IIA.

1) I am finding fitting the bellhousing a real struggle and have, on my
;last attempt, destroyed the rear layshaft bearing. Can anyone provide
tips? Eg: is it best to do this with the 'box vertical or horizontal?
I can get as far as engageing the layshaft in the front bearing and then
don't seem to be able to bring the bellhousing and casing together.

2) The 'box is a Rover reconditioned unit, at least there is a plate on
the bellhousing attesting to this. It shows part number 600917. There
is a serial number K09429 on the same plate. I can find no other serial
number anywhere on the 'box.

I obtained a new primary pinion and constant gear (The originals were
chipped) from Craddock's, part number 542231, this being the correct
part for the year/chassis number of the vehicle. Unfortunately this
wouldn't fit, the primary pinion being 0.10" greater in diameter than
the original. Craddocks finally established that my pinion was part
number 518473; this was listed in the S1 parts book. That this pinion
fits and the other didn't implies that the main shaft and layshaft are
0.05" closer together than on the "correct" box, ie the one taking part
number 542231. Craddocks reckon that the (reconditioned) box was
actually from an earlier vehicle. However, the rest of the 'box seems
to conform to the spec. for the later 'box, all the parts matching those
shown in the parts book.

What concerns me is that sometime in its 29 year history someone has
fitted an earlier bellhousing onto the front of a later gearbox and
that, as a result, the main shaft and layshaft may not be running
parallel.

Can anyone help me spot whether this is the case?

I've tried measuring the bearing registers in the casing but have not
succeeded with the instruments I have available.

Did the centrees of the mainshaft and layshaft change at some point?

How can I tell if I have a matching bellhousing and gearbox casing?

Any thoughts?

Thanks.

Hello All;

I thought it would be great if we could recognize one another at the Down
East Rally. If everyone would submit the following it would help us pick
each other out in the crowd:

Name
Model Type
Model Year
Color
Plate Number
State of Registration

See you all there!!

Cheers,

Question to the list.... I am reviewing the various sources for swivel balls and
the other necessary parts in the front end of my 1969 Series 2A. Has anyone
purchased theSwivel Ball Rebuild kit package price($499.00) from Atlantic
British with any sucess or trouble. Thank you in advance! John Stiller

Subject: Salisbury diff backlash gone
Date: Mon, 23 Jun 1997 08:34:28 +0200 (MET DST)

Hello Rovers,
some weeks ago I asked here about how to get rid of the backlash
in my Salisbury rear diff. After unsuccessfully trying to get the
diff out myself, I phoned Max, my mechanic. Since he had very much
to do we ended up with the arrangement that I could come to his
workshop on Saturday, do as much as possible myself and he would
help me when I get stuck.
We had some struggle to get the diff out by widening the casing
with a spring compressor (I'd recommend to get or build something
like the special tool mentioned in the manual) but the rest came
apart farely easy.
When I pulled the seal behind the drive flange it turned out to be
a leather seal. I didn't know that LR used them since 1989! May be
it was put in later while Brumml served his time in the British
forces in Berlin.
We decided that we would need to add about 0.2mm to the shim pack
behind the bearing race of the input gear. But were to get these
shims at Saturday around lunchtime? Max didn't have anything like
that in his workshop, since he is by no means a Land Rover
specialist (he would starve to death if he only would work on LR's).
I ended up cutting one out of the bottom of a paint can. No great
problem and it worked just fine. The diff itself didn't have any
internal backlash, so I didn't take it apart.
Putting everything together was not to hard either, except that the
bearing race needed some grease and a bigger hammer to get it back
into its place. The diff went right in with the spring compressor
trick.
Now the diff clonk is still there, but much quieter and the backlash
is down from about 35mm to 10mm a the drive flange circumfence.

Hope this helps sombody,
Franz
