Subject: Historical Clutch Question

Hi all,

When did the switch to 9.5 inch diaphragm clutches in 88" take place? The
reason I ask is, my 1968 LR has the old style 9 inch clutch in it. It was my
understanding that in '67 they switched over to the 9.5 inch. Nicht wahr?

Subject: Bus tyres revisited

In case anyone is interested, to recap, I asked the list about fitting 10 ply
van tyres to my 90 lorry to get pure road rib pattern with hjopefully
maximal tread life. The reaction was almost universallly Dont Do It.

Eventually I found a phone number for Michelin's techies and their verdict was that
there is no problem either legal or practical with fitting Michelin
XCAs (available in 6.00R16, 7.50R16, 225/75R16 or 205/75R16 [marked
on the sidewall as compatible with 205R16]) to standard LR rims. I
shall fit 6.00R16s since my lorry origianlly ca\me witht eh 6-16 Avon
x-plies and the poor little 2.5n/a deisel lost 10mph top speed when
the wider 205R16s were fitted :(

The pressures they recommend are unladen: 25F and R - laden:25F and
35R. And they say there will be no problem at all running radial
tubes in the tubeless casings. They also reckn that the M&S 205R16
radials I have on now (a standard Wrangler AT) is similar to an 8 ply
truck tyre and so the 10 ply will give an almost unnoticeable
stiffenning of the ride and probably willl be less stiff than the old
Avon Traction Mileages (which were made of wood).

Since teh local bus operators can get 100k from a set of XCAs, I
shall definitely go this way. Particuarly since teh XCAs are near the
bottom of the price range of 205R16 M&Ss.........

All in all, a most satisfactory phone call.

Subject: 2.5 Diesel Head Gasket

I have a 110 2.5 diesel which requires a new head gasket. I'm going to
have the head skimmed at the same time.

Has anyone got any useful hints/tips about this task before I begin?
i'm thinking of things you tend not to find in the manual.

Thanks Jim

Subject: Registration success & Waxoyl
Date: Fri, 20 Jun 1997 14:17:44 -0400

Hi all.

I think I garbled that last message about a Waxoyl substitute. I had =
originally heard 1lb wax, 1gal spirits and about a quart of oil -that is =
the mixture that ISN'T thick enough.

The mixture I mentioned - one part wax: two parts spirits: one part 40wt =
- looks very promising. If anyone has any suggestions for interesting =
additions to this mix let me know and I'll see what happens.

AND

I did finally succeed in getting my Dormobile registered!!

Thanks to all of you who have made suggestions and offered help.

Chris (inspection? What inspection?)

Subject: Bleeding 109" Brakes

Hello,
Is there a method for bleeding the brakes on my '65 109" Wagon without
jacking up the front? I don't have a way to safely do it and still have
a pedal pumper inside, nor do I have a pressure system.
Also, I have always tightened the bleed screw while the pedal was
depressed, the Workshop manual shows to press/release, then tighten the
bleed screw. Any suggestions or comments? I rebuilt swivel balls last
weekend and I guess not even my strongest rubber bands for the brake
cylinders were strong enough. I hope to bleed tonight, so thanks for
your help, Bren.

My wife and I had a baby boy on June 20. There were some problems during
the delivery, but so far there seems to be nothing wrong. We are hoping
he will grow up to be a land rover mechanic so I can spend less time
under Emerson! (there, some LR content)
