We bought our 96 Disco in Aug, and continually it disappears with my
wife behind the wheel and 3 kids in the back. Drove them all, Disco
is the best buy, unless you go for the D90.

Just remember, the Disco will climb mts, merge through commuter boxes,
and blast through mud, but it is not a commuter MPH. Everyone I have
sent to check them out at the Rockville MD Land Rover Center drives
     one home.

Subject: Oily endeavour?

Just when I thought everything was working fine...

My 88" started maming a funny noise "clunkety-clunk" noticeable when
driving, very noticeable when starting and stopping, and the oil
pressure gauge (hydraulic, smiths, original) shows no pressure. Oil
dipstick is fine, but maybe no oil circulating in the motor?

This is a new one on me - so besides not driving the beast, what do i do
- should I suspect the oil pump? how do I check this? I understand it's
a very oily endeavour!

I have noticed many "aspiring LRO's" writing to this net asking about
the pro's and cons of owning a Land Rover - so I have compiled a short
page on my website called "Why drive a Series III Land-Rover" - it can
be seen at -

let me know what you all think!

Subject: Cheap paint choices?

Hello,

In keeping with the budget, and the general condition of the 73 Series III 88
(fair), I've been thinking it's time to remove the exterior mold growth and
put on some paint.

I've considered a brush job, but think if I order the paint from a Land Rover
supplier for $299 that it deserves a better application than I can give it.
(Big dollars at a body shop relative to vehicle condition and value).

A more cost effective option I've found is Earl Scheib. They are quoting a
two tone paint job (they have a paint to match limestone for the top, and a
green -not a good match- for the bottom. $501 dollars includes 5 year fade
guarantee, hand& machine sanding, chemically cleaned, seal coat for uniform
base? and clear top coat (I'll tell them I don't need the interior vacuum and
armor-all on the tires that included with this package). Their price also
includes replacement of the rivets over the rear wheels and filling the
corrosion holes with fiberglass.

Questions:
    1) Is this viable?
    2) If they don't use the converter & metal cleaner included in the Rover
paint
will their paint job last out their 5 yr. guarantee?

All comments are welcome!!

Thanks

Subject: Value for a SIII Rover

I have been looking at a SIII 109 rover RHD and wonder about its value. The
body has a few dings, grille missing, hood catch tempermental, seats worn and
one door catch is broken. The rover seems to run well, however the owner
says it does slip out of 2nd gear at times.

I must admit that I didn't check out the frame but I was still wondering what
kind of offer I should make for this beast. Any suggestions as to reasonable
offer would be appreciated. I should add that I'm no real mechanic, however
I can do some work on my own.

I can personally vouch for that; I saw it, lusted at it (the TDi) and watched
it do the trials course. The only not-so-nice thing on it was a tall
ratchet-type of jack which was a terrible disadvantage in the tire-changing
portion of the trial. A high-lift or bottle jack were much faster in lifting
the axle. It was a nice shade of blue, too.

Hello all,

If a person wanted to install door locks in a series vehicle that would,
at the very least, be resistant to opening with a half chewed toothpick
what are the options?

Thanks folks.

You could:

a) Weld or rivet them shut and enter/exit via roof hatch
b) Put padlocks on the outside (I've seen this done; but I won't say
where...)
c) put in new lock tumblers (you'd then need an *unchewed* toothpick)

He wouldn't be out of Charlotte, would 'e? I met a british guy (I forgot his
name-) at last year's Mid-Atlantic who had a (green?)109 SIII on a trailer
behind a Furd Expidishin (the 109 was allegedly for some hunter in MN). Said
his company imported "refurbished" LRs from their British counterpart for US
buyers. He said he couldn't understand our enthusiasm and reverence for
things Land Rover and left... So much for making friends & contacts and
meeting potential clients (-but I didn't forget his demeanor)... Anyone else
remember this fellow? He parked between the water trailer and the gate...

Good luck. *If* I had to, I'd rather do the importing myself with guidance &
advice from list members like Bill C and Quintin A, et al. I'd also try to
get to the UK to find/inspect the LR, in light of the recent "Beware: to
potential buyers..." thread.

So, I gotta ask-- What do *flashlight* skid plates look like? ;-)

(for the non-british-english-speakers, torch in UK is flashlight in US)

Just saw a defender 90 on the way to see Jurrasic Park 2. When we got to

well used. Seeing the land-rovers on the way to the movie was better than
seeing the film.

Do they know the LR has an aluminum body? The local Earl Scheib in
Oakland, California (on E14th) told me they will not do aluminum bodied
vehicles. Perhaps each shop has its own policy.

 Adrian,
| No loose castle nuts, all tight as a drum - but I did notice a measure
| of backlash in the rear differential, I'd gues it was about 15 degrees -
	 [ truncated by list-digester (was 6 lines)]
| one direction to turned tight in the other direction.
| First question - is this normal?
I'd say it's somewhere between normal and a bit too much ;-)

| Thirdly - could this cause gearbox to hop out of 2nd when coming
| down from 3rd.
Don't think so. I'm not a gearbox specialist, but once somebody
told me that there are some leafspringlike thingies in the gearbox
(3 for each gear) that break from time to time. when the last one
is gone, the particular gear will pop out. May be that is your problem...

Perhaps I can answer your diff question later. Brumml has massive
diff backlash in the moment and we'll see the doctor eh mechanic
tonight.

Subject: Police Range Rover

An amusing little tale as mailed to me by my brother:

One of the Air Traffic Assistants (Phil, the one known as Landrover
Man) has a friend in the Yorkshire Police traffic division (exactly which
Yorkshire force I can't remember). This friend has recently transferred to
motorway patrol duties where she gets to play with the new Range Rovers, as
featured recently in LRO. Apparently the controls for the lights (police
lights that is) require a degree to master them, they are capable of working
in all manner of sequences i.e. to the front only, to the rear, down one
side, the other side, all together etc. also included with this are traffic
message boards to the front and rear.
While on patrol recently she and her colleague were called to attend
an incident on the other carriageway of a motorway which they were
patrolling. Realising that the nearest junction was six miles ahead of them
they decided to use one of the centre reserve access points, as this was
alongside a section of motorway resurfacing works which involved the
motorway being reduced to one lane they knew the following traffic would be
slowed down but in order to slow them further to enable them (the police) to
turn the lights and message board to the rear were switched on.
Imagine her surprise when, as she made her turn, she noticed in her
mirror that the car behind was following her through the central reserve and
into the other carriageway. She promptly put all the lights on and pulled
over to the hard shoulder.
When she approached the driver of the car to ask him what he was
doing imagine her surprise when he said he was only doing as he had been
instructed, he
gestured towards the Range Rover and she turned to see "FOLLOW ME"
illuminated
on the message board. Apparently she has never been so embarrassed in her
life.

Five people in Nebraska? must be a pretty desolate place!
