Pull the rocker cover filler/breather off with the engine running. If huge
clouds of oily smoke issue forth, then leave it alone. Not even changing
the air filter can disguise this. Oil staining may also be obvious where it
drains out of the air filter housing on a bad one.

Big deal, how'd you get to be a sponsor, by years of hard work and
expenditure of valuable time at your own expense, or by buying out
with good old "hard won" memebership revenue?

I don't normally get involved in these things, but I didn't liek the sound

Subject: re: Chassis Oiling!

I have recently stripped my Series3 to a bare chassis. The vehicle
had stood for 3 years unused but the front half of the chassis
from the g'box crossmember forward was perfectly preserved by the
coating of engine/g'box oil. The back half was badly affected by
surface corrosion. Evidence enough of the benefits of oil on the
chassis!

Its a shame that there isn't any leaking mechanicals further back -
it would have saved me a lot of time with a wire brush!

My chassis is now gleaming in two coats of hammerite and about to
be coated internally with copious amounts of waxoil.

How often does the waxoil need to be re-applied? Annually?

If you have a local sheet metal fabricator, I can provide you with
measurements for a spice rack. I once checked into the price of having a
wardrobe made up using my existing one as a model. They wanted around
US$800 to fabricate the parts, you paint and assemble. I ended up
purchasing a small sheet metal brake and learned how to bend my own
sheetmetal to construct a second wardrobe, second sink stand, and
refrigerator stand.

I looked at a Rangie in Lincoln, NE, a while back and the owner had bought his
from another guy in Lincoln, NE, who owns several Rangies (including HSE).
Since there is a LR dealership in Omaha, NE, I wouldn't be surprised if there
are plenty of owners around.

WHen I was in China last month, I saw a dark green 110 SW and got to
wondering if anyone knew whether there were any LRs imported to CHina.

They are getting quite 4x4 mad over there, with Cherokee knock-offs being
really popular. THey also have a cool short and LWB jeepish/lrish thingy
that looks like it was once based on that Russian light 4x4. There are
the tatty ex mil versions, along with tarted up models with high gloss
paint, light bars and cast aluminum wheels. Funny thing is, they have a
split banjo style diff like the old Fords and Chevs did in the 40s. Fun
to adjust, I bet....They also have really well constructed rubberized
canvas full tilts that actualy look waterproof!

Subject: St. Louis LR Groups?

Just this week I took delivery of my 1997 D90 Alpine White Soft Top
#1005...Two questions I have:

1. Does anyone know of any LR owners groups in or around the St. Louis
area? I read about two weeks ago in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch about
a Plaza Motors'(St. Louis' LR Dealer) sponsored LR event in which about
fifty owners participated, but there was no mention as to if an owners
organization exists and if so, who I need to contact to join.

2. I've been reading from time to time about a Land Rover International
magazine. Is this a US based magazine? Does anyone know where an issue
could be acquired in the St. Louis area, or if not, a number where I
could inquire about maybe starting a subscription?

Looking toward many happy years of Rovering...My wife already wants a
new Range Rover in the fall (where will it stop ?!!)

Many thanks,

Subject: Liz and Di and Rover

Queen Elizabeth and Princess Diana were on an African safari,
riding in a Range Rover, when they were ambushed by a group of bandits.
Being well-read thugs, they immediately recognized the royal ladies. "I
know you," the bandit chief said to the Queen, "You're the richest woman
in the world. Hand over all your money and be quick about it."
"I am terrible sorry," Her Majesty replied. "It is true that I am
very wealthy, but I never carry cash on my person. You can search me if
you like, but I have nothing to give you."
Frustrated, the robber turned to the Princess. "You never go
anywhere without dripping with jewelry," he growled. "Hand over all the
jewelry before I kill you both."
"I am so sorry," said Her Highness, "But this is a safari. It
would have been in dreadful taste for me to wear any jewels. You can
search me also, but I have nothing to give you either."
Growling with frustration and rage, the bandit chief ordered them
out of the Rover, loaded it up with his men, and drove off in cloud of
dust. After a little while, Princess Diana turned to the Queen by the
side of the road and said, "By the way, I happen to know that you always
carry a large sum of money with you. How did you save it?"
Primly, Queen Elizabeth replied, "Well, I saw the miscreants ahead
on the road, and took the opportunity to hid my money in... ahem... a
woman's private place, you know." Reaching down she pulled out a roll
of banknotes. The Queen continued, "But what about you, my dear? With my
own eyes I saw the diamond set you had on this morning. How did you
happen to save it?"
Blushing a little, Diana confessed "Well, I too saw the robbers
lying in wait, and had enough warning to hide my jewelry in ... umm ... a
woman's private place." Reaching down, she pulled out a handful of
sparkling gemstones, and fastened them back in place.
The two ladies stood in silence for a few moments. Then the Queen
remarked, "Pity Fergie isn't here. We might have saved the Rover."

Chris,

So, you must have a Higgins shotgun, or rifle too, eh?

What really amazed me, was that Sears still knew what I was talking about
(they stopped selling guns over 20 years ago), AND had an answer!

Subject: bobeck writes: How'd you get to be a sponsor?

Well, Dave, that is a good question, you'd think there would
at least be some East Coast group who'd pick up the event, but
I guess when it comes to eager sponsors perhaps money is more
persuasive than attitude (or is it fools rush in where ...)

I do want to say that if the rumblings from the Maine woods are
anything near the truth, from what I heard, I really couldn't
blame the museam for seeking other sponsors, though it is sad
that this DownEast Debacle '97 is in no small part due to the
behaviour of the person who worked so hard all these years to
create the event.

And since Dixon's posting of Myles' note - without any contact
info, and Myles appearing to have dropped out of site
(disconnected phone, etc.), I would think that those who are
planning to attend Myles' version of the '97 DownEast have more
questions than answers at the moment. I personally won't be
attending (not withstanding the DIS-invitation to Range Rover
Owners), I have a longer standing commitment to attend the
two day Jazz Festival at Saratoga Performing Arts Center.

[That said, maybe we'll start EROS at the SPAC Jazz Festival ?
look for me in a large patch of folks camped out high
on the hill just to the right of the second ramp meets the hill
(second from stage left) and remember, cans, bottles, alcohol &
marshmellows are on the banned list at SPAC, but that's another
story :-) - bring sunscreen, food, especially drink, weather
gear, and anything else you might need while there from 11am to
midnight...swim in the stream, drink from Charlie Spring if you
dare !]

Disgusting! Have you no respect... (snigger, snigger...)

Actually, I heard it was in the wilds of Wales and Princess Margaret's
capacity for "secreting valuables about one's person" was in question. I
was just too chicken to air it on the web for fear of 'death by
flaming'.

Congrats on 'outing' the hilarious royals.

Greetings all,

Just a quick thank you to everyone for thier contributions to what is
IMHO one of the most valuable e-mail lists I've ever been on. Next week
is the "big move" for me (NL -> USA) so I'll be off the list for at least
the next six weeks. Wish me luck in dealing with DOT, if everything
turns out OK there will be one more 109 on US soil in about 4 weeks (my
(other) beloved goes on the ship thursday).

If anyone here sees an OD green SIII 109 with full canvas top, and "funny

12th of July, give us a wave!

Cheers all,
