LR List,
Calling LR owners in or near the Bangor Maine area!

I am interested in seeing a few LRs this summer, when I am up
that way. There are virtually no LRs near to where I live.

The other possibility is that the 1st/2nd selector is not adjusted
properly. If the fork is not in the correct place on the shaft, it is
possible that the second gear doesn't get fully engaged, and therefore is
much more likely to jump out. Both the detent springs and the selectors can
be adjusted with the box in place, but in order to get to the selectors
you need to remove the top cover of the transmission, which usually
requires loosening the seat box, and removing the floor panels. If second
gear was replaced, I would bet that you just need to adjust the fork.

Want to see a few Land Rovers, eh? How about 200 or so on
display at this year's Owls Head Land Rover Rally on Sunday,
June 29? Owls Head is south of Camden, around Rockport and
Rockland. For more info, call 207-594-4418.

Subject: Re: Temporary LR Importation to US?

I've been away for a while, but the answer is YES, you can import any vehicle
to the US on a temporary basis, PROVIDED that it does leave the country after
the (whatever it is) time that it is allowed here, has elapsed, and that it
remains registered in the country that it comes from (it can't be registered
here after it arrives, unless it complies with Federal, and State regs). As
far as Customs is concerned, so long as there's documentation that it does
leave, they're happy.

As for LRNA...they don't seem to want anything here, that they didn't sell
here, so don't expect an honest answer from them.

Hi All

I am looking for a picture of a old trailer. 1959 trailer the brand name is
J. C. Higgins.
It has four compartments two on each side it is made much like the LR's as
it too is mostly aluminum. It is a "tent camper" type of trailer. If anyone
know of a photo of this camper PLEASE E-mail me.
 Daviscar@concentric.net

Why someone will ask because I just bought one with no canvas and think it
is just to cool for words. I would like to use it as a camper not just a
trailer.

Thanks for the help.

If memory serves me J.C.Higgins was a Sears Roebuck brand. You might try
looking up a copy of their catalog from that year. Used book store etc.

Jeremy Bartlett write with a question about "temporarily" importing a
diesel. One of the chaps in the club has done just that, but the fact that
he is a diplomat with the South African embassy might have made it easier.
At the Mid-Atlantic Rally last year, that TDi 110 sure attracted a lot of
lustful attention. He had to post a guard at night. ;-)

I have heard of others bringing in TDi's while on visas. There was one
retired engineer from Solihull who was making his way around the world in
his 110 TDi. Portsmouth was his port of entry, and he planned to stay in
the US for six months and exit via Alaska. I met him his first day in town.
If you are on a visa - and will export the vehicle at a later date - I
don't think there is any problem. We've certainly seen enough British army
vehicles tooling about.... (Norfolk is NATO headquarters) Cheers

Yes. Properly termed end-float or run-out. It is the tightness that the
inner nut presses on the outer hub bearing. If you greased the bearings up
real well, and then tightened the nut down, once the excess grease worked
out, the bearings would then be loose and a possible source of the rumbling.
There is a "book value" for the run-out using a dial guage, but after
200,000 miles and innumerable hub jobs, I have just developed a 'feel' for
it. I've found that after greasing the hub, reassembling it ans spinning it
quite a lot to 'settle' the grease, finger tight for the inner nut than
backed off ever so slightly is just fine. The outer one - the lock nut -
get cranked tight. However, if the inner one got granked, the it's too
tight and you're binding on the bearings...another possible source for the
noise.

After every long run, make it a habit to feel the hubs. When one feels warm
(or hot), you know it's time for grease.
Cheers

Indeed. A good bit of kit. (Throw the undercoating that comes with it
away.) I've found that if you heat the Waxoyl up in a sink of hot water (or
the microwave) especially in the winter, it does an excellent job without
thinning...but you gotta watch the coverage. I goes on *real* thick. I've
found that diesel, keroor or heating oil also works well to cut Waxoyl,
though Varsol (mineral spirits) is the best...petrol turns it into a
passable flame thrower.

Bruce...

Call Sears, Robuck & Co.

J.C. Higgins was one of their brand names in the 1950's. It was definately
made by somebody else, and if you call their customer service/parts info
line, they can give you some kind of info on it, or give you a number of who
can help you.

I know this, because my dad bought a shotgun from them in 1959, and it has a
broken stock. It has the Higgins name on it, and I called Sears, and they
gave me the number of the folks that STILL carry parts for it!

If this was true there would be no chassis left around the engine of my 110,
rather than rusting away to nothing this is the best preserved part of the
chassis.

Don't do it! Used motor oil is acidic and will cause your frame to rust
away
to
nothing!

Do Defender front wings fit Series Rovers? Are they a diret bolt-on? Or
do they need to be modified?

Unless I'm talking about a different S.A. Diplomat, its a 1986 V8 110,
not a Tdi.

If your not an American citizen, its very easy to temoprarily bring in a
vehicle. Last year in Long Island I met 2 Swiss college students
driving around in a blue diesel 110. Are you guys on the list?

Check the chassis for rust, rear crossmember and the outriggers are probably
the most likely areas.
Check the bulkhead for rust: round the windscreen hinges, below the vents
and at the bottom of the A pillars.
Bodywork shouldn't be too bad but check the bottom of the doors, the steel
frame can rust like buggery.
To check the transmission drive it in all gears Hi and Lo box and make sure
the diff locks and unlocks easily.
The turbo diesel isn't the strongest engine ever, my friend's needed
replaced at only 95,000 miles. Have a look at the air filter for signs of
oil contamination; if it's oily or brand new be suspicious.

Hope this helps.

I am going to buy a 1987 landrover 90 Turbo Diesel.

What have I to inspect and check to be sure that the machine is in sound
condition?
