Try http://monroe.com/monroe/mainmen.htm.

It is an interesting site. They dont givea part number for a series
vehicle, they do offer a limited edition service and give an 800
number.

Subject: emissions test

I have a friend with an 83 Range-Rover that he cannot get to pass the
emisssions test. Also, a friend with an 86 BMW that does not pass. Both
cars sit at home with thier owners now.
So yesterday, when I took the 69 Landy down to the emissions testing
facility I was a little sweaty. The chap said that the idle was too high
and to take it to a shop to have it adjusted. I went around the corner
lifted the hood (bonnet), turned down the screw and drove around to the same
line (same chap). She got through the test and I put the new tabs on!
Almost did'nt even lose my place in line.
Moral of the story: "Sometimes, the simple things are best, especially
when it comes to emissions tests".

It's my understanding that you can use the factory conversion from a
2.5-liter petrol Land-Rover that should be available from a UK wrecker. I
believe that's what TeriAnn has on hers and bought it on one of her trips to
the UK. I was going to get one of those when I was over there but didn't
find time. So I ended up buying one from British Pacific here in
California. I'm happy with it, certainly, but would have preferred the
genuine part, if that could have worked out for me.

Err... Mine point up!

Also, I found the chains love to jump off. A couple of big grommits pushed
onto the spiral after the chain works wonders.
Regarding the noise - I notice the Defenders use a bit of wire now!

Subject: Door posts and footwells

I need to tap into the experience of the list: My SIII bulkhead is off the
car and stripped of its 1100 fiddly parts, many of which will remain a mystery
during reassembly. I need to replace a doorpost (left side) and both
footwells. I do have a mig welder. I am not, however, an experienced
welder.

1. On the door post, how is proper alignment and placement of the foot
achieved. The tolerance is about 1/8 inch, and I'm worried about botching
this up. Any pointers?

2. Footwells: How hard are these to put in? They seem simple, but my new
ones aren't in yet, but I'm wondering where the upper edge of the top of the
footwell mates with the bulkhead.

The bottom line is this: Should I tackle the job myself - is it a job that a
competent shade-tree mechanic can handle, or should I have it done by a pro?

Thanks for your time.

No reason at all, in theory. Mind you, practical reasons (who has the
time?) might keep it from happening. Still, down the road somewhen, I do
see exactly what you suggested becoming available: a generic box, with
various connection adapters/vehicle emulation/software ROM's available from
the mfr or 3rd party programmers/hobbiests.

I took the front brake drums off my LWB, to clean the mud out, thought I'd banged them on fully. I put the wheels back, drove thirty miles and found that the nearside
nuts were almost completely off! Turned out that the drums had crept back about 0.5mm onto the hub, which freed up the nuts.

Adrian asks for advice on his hot diesel.
What type of temperature gauge are you using. I suggest that you first
calibrate the gauge by placing the end in BOILING water to establish where
it reads at 100 deg C ( European ) or 212 for the colonials.
The electric type of gauges are notoriously innacurate.
Then check things like, thermostat ( remove and place in hot water, use a
thermometer to measrure at what temperature it opens and closes ) maybe you
need a summer type. Radiator pressure cap, water pump etc.

Having just paid a kings ransom for a full rebuild of the gearbox in
February (and I did get a big box of old gogs back from the workshop) I
am sad to say that the 109 is slipping out of 2nd when changing down
from 3rd - more times than not she just hops out of gear.

The garage will take her in and pull the box again if necessary, but i
thought I'd just check if anybody here has had the same problem - and
if, what is the cause and remedy?

Subject: Oil Pump Rebuild

Hi all,

I was spending a pleasant afternoon rebuilding the oil pump. Questions arose
when I noticed that while the endfloat is well within spec, the radial
clearance is at the top end of specifications, both the old and new. I don't
see any way of decreasing the end clearance (sanding would be a pain with the
locating dowels setting there). Although the new gears are very tight (less
than spec), I chose to go with the old gears (at the low end of spec) since
the aluminium idler gear had virtually no damage. I ended up just cleaning
it and replacing the relief spring, relief ball and
O ring at the pickup screen.

1. Is there a way to decrease the radial clearance?
2. If the idler gear has virtually no damage should it be replaced, just 'cuz
I'm in there?
3. How often do people end up only needing to replace the relief valve
components?

Thanks
Nate

Hmmm... For what purpose? Lists of names of <x> people (where <x> can be
Disco owners, wine drinkers, PC users, etc.) are very valuable items. You
could, in theory, call up BritPac, SafariGard, et al. and ask for their
customer lists, but it's doubtful they would give them out, since you could
be a competitor.

Further, people aren't just going to pop up and say, "I own a Disco!" just
'cause you want to make a list... unless they know what for.

What you might do is say "I sell <x> for Disco's; if you're interested,
e-mail me directly." or "If anyone has had hearing loss because of squeeky
steering wheels and drivetrain clonk in their Disco, please let me know; I
want to make a list to see about starting a class action lawsuit." or "I'm
thinking about forming a club for Disco owners who like Disco music. Please
let me know if you'd like to join." or even "I'm curious as to how many
Disco owners there are here. If you e-mail me, I'll sum up and post a total
to the list."

Just an FYI...
