I have been lucky in the past in that the rear half-shaft breakages have
broke close to the drive-flange at the wheel end of the shaft, so
removal was fairly quick and then careful and slow use of the Landy to
get home using 4-wheel drive for the front wheels has worked.
BUT, recently I changed the front left (long) half shaft which had broke
about 6 inches from the nut. Since the last snow when I found that
4-wheel drive wasn't working properly there had been a tinkleing sound
sometimes from the front end. I had thought that this was a wheel
bearing needing attention, when I could get round to it.
Such noises should not be ignored!!
Having said that it passed its MOT in March with very little needing to
be done and they didn't notice anything.
Anyway, last week I was going to work, a bit late as usual, and upon
applying the brakes at the end of our road the left front locked up, I
had to reverse to release the brake shoe to get it to move again .......
I left it at home and went in the Metro.
That evening I started to investigate sticky brakes. Took the wheel off
and the brake drum, nice coating of black oil everywhere, so there you
go just new shoes for the time being, then think again!
The hub was very easy to turn and had no effect on the front prop-shaft
,oh I thought and removed the half-shaft nut and drive flange, I now had
six inches of half-shaft in my hands. Its getting late so leave the
thing on axle stands and go to bed.
Next evening further investigations - removing wobbley swivel-housing -
revealed disintegrated swivel bearing, removal of the hub had shown a
useless oil seal behind the wheel bearing.
The following Saturday I obtained a second-hand half-shaft in reasonable
nick, new swivel bearing, oil-seal and various tab-washers. All day
Saturday and most of Sunday I spent putting it all back together. The
swivel housing oil-seal leaked at first but after three goes at cleaning
it finally with a clean cloth damp with meths, it worked. So now a week
later and 50 odd miles all seems ok ( steady on, but I did say SEEMS
ok!)

Moral: don't ignore noises, fix half-shaft breakages immeadiatly, keep
those swivel housings topped up and if they leak clean the oil seal
scrupulosly ( or something)

I will not buy cheapo parts, I will not buy cheapo parts, I will not buy
cheapo parts.....

Friends, do yourself a favor and learn from my mistake. Buy only Genuine
parts for your Land Rover. The savings in cost do not add up when the
knock-offs and cheapies have to be replaced in a matter of weeks.

Just a public note of thanks to Nate Dunsmore. I was able to drop by
yesterday and pick up the rear drive shaft for my 88, which "should" go in
tonight (given I don't break another u joint yoke). Nate has a very nice RHD
88" IIA that he frameovered himself (and has provided the list with its
trials and tribulations), an enviable layout - shop and an overhaul/frame
over area, plus outside storage for vehicles "in transition". Plus, he's a
consumate gentleman.

Again, Nate, Thanks!!

Can we assume that owning an example of fine Solihull engineering has its
pitfalls for those living in the Netherlands?

G'day Richard,

My local tyre shop is now used to me asking them not to tighten the wheel
nuts, and seeing me dig out the wheel brace to finish off the job.

Makes for a much easier wheel change when in the bush and there are no air
hoses and rattle guns to be seen anywhere.

I suspect a typo, with a 12V battery in the car I'd like to know where you
could get 22Volts from :-) Even in the coldest weather 25seconds should be
enough with these plugs.

I was forced to go to a Kwi***t garage near Southampton a few years ago. They
put their air gun on the nuts - after I lent them my 1.25" impact socket (they
did not have a 27mm either). Did not move as nuts were lightly rusted on (I
now use marine grease). Next came a Snap On long hinged handle, all this
resulted in was a sheared Snap On handle! I laughed and said at least they
would get it replaced then got out the usual £6 solid steel wheel brace and
Tirfor handle (about 3' extension) and undid it easily. Did not give me a
discount though.
