Well, Nigel has struck again...

I got home yesterday evening and decided to crawl under Mr. Churchill with
a grease gun and hit up the lube fittings (something do about every oil
change or so).

Lo and behold, my front propshaft has a missing grease fitting, and that
U-joint has 1/4" of play in it..... damn.

Thankfully, I had a spare shaft, which after a boot replacement and a lube
job plugged into the space vacated by the old one in short order.

Doesn't vibrate any more with the hubs locked - wonder why? 8*)

I use one that I got last summer at Price Costco for $38. It's black,
sits nicely on the center seat and can be easily secured with the
center seat belt. Nice cubby with padded cover just the right height
for an armrest and 2 drink holders. Trays and such for coins and
sunglasses inside. I don't remember how I managed without it. They
still carry it. No interference with the OD lever, however you do
have to reach around a little. I use it to store lots of stuff, most
notably my stereo system.
This system is extremely high tech. No costs were spared to put
together a system that could actually be heard in a Series truck.
Gotta $20 dolla Walkman, w/ cassette, and a $20 dolla Boostaroo box
from WalMart that allows multiple headphones to be connected to the
Walkman. Wanna keep the passengers happy and groovin too. Best
feature is the high tech part, a pair of Noise Cancelling headphones
from Noise Cancellation Technologies (203) 961-0500, called
:Noisebuster Extreme". I got mine from Brookstone mail order for $69,
(800-846-3000), but Sharper Image also carries them (800-344-4444).
These babies really work well. They have a control box coupled to 2
tiny microphones in each earphone that monitors ambient sound at your
ears. It then sends an exact opposite amplitude signal, effectively
"cancelling" the ambient noise by as much as 15db. Imagine driving a
Series truck at 65 mph and NOT hearing it ?
I'm here to tell ya that ya can spend many hundreds for a high power
system, 8 speakers and STILL not hear your tunes as well as with these
headphones. And NO I don't have anything to gain here by the
endorsement, and I only endorse what I use and really like. If you
miss your tunes while driving the greatest 4x4 on earth and already
have a walkman, treat yourself to these.

Hello,

I remember reading about Kinetic suspension in LROI ages
ago. Is it still around? It was supposed to be available
in 1996 I think. Is it actually commercially available?
It seemed very impressive in the article.

I'm one of the folks with an extra 109 frame. The problem is that
it's so sound that I'm not sure I want to part with it. I gave 1st
refusal to one Steve Stoneham some months back. It is currently
located in Virginia, still undergoing transfer of upperworks to the
     new galv frame..

Subject: Series Rivets, etc.

Based on info from the list some months back, I recently placed an
order for rivets from Wadsworth Panels in England. Even though their
post code wasn't on the web, and so not on the envelope, it was only
11 calendar days between mailing my order and receiving the goods. I
recomment them, especially to Series I owners, as they seem to
specialize in S-I. They have much more than just rivets.

Anyway, the current info for these nice folks is:
     Wadsworth Panels
     Steele Lane
     Barkisland
     Halifax
     England HX4 0ER

     Tel/Fax 01422 822200

They don't take plastic, so a checque in pounds Sterling will be
     required.

Malcolm,

Thought you were dead. How about a comp subscription to the magazine?
Seriously, my stock 2A and S3 couldn't quite pull 4250 wide open in fourth
when they topped out at about 72mph.
How about I give you the formulas and let you figure it out on your own?

The basic gearing vs rpm formula is this:

        MPH X GEAR RATIO X 336
       _______________________   = RPM
        TIRE DIAMETER (INCHES)

Normally, you would put the axle ratio in the "GEAR RATIO" area
because that what your final drive in fourth gear, 1-1 ratio. Land Rovers
use a stepped down high range ratio and you have to factor that in, so the
4.77 (axle ratio) times 1.14 (high range ratio) = 4.18 actual ratio.
If you want to figure your rpms in a given gear, you find the ratio
of that gear, then multiply it by the transfer ratio and the axle ratio.

3.02 (1st gear) X 1.14 (transfer) X 4.77 (axle)= 17.4

Okay, so you plug that into the formula.

        25(MPH) X 17.4 X 336
        ____________________ = 4497rpm
               32.5 (inches)

So at 25mph in first high range you be turning a whopping 4497 rpm
and probably regretting it later.

        Have fun!!

Well if the compression is fine and the glow plugs are working to get the
initial heat and the injectors are working to get the diesel in there then
there isn't much left to check :-(

Air filter? (but the 2.25 has the oil bath which can't clog up doesn't it?)

How cold are we talking?

Does it start at all? If so how well does it run once started?

Subject: Nige will get ya
Date: Wed, 4 Jun 97 11:23:41 EDT

OK folks, I've been hearing rumblings about the whereabouts
of Nigel and the derivation of "Nigel's Disease." Seems
yer all having problems of one sort or another.....

Methinks Sandy Grice correctly identified the historical
events that led to the claim that dear ol' Nige can
transmit, though thin air, his ailments (recent and near
future) to any or all series rigs out there with whom
he confides without the knowledge or consent of said
rigs' owners. (Incidentally, though, it gets worse-
he recently tranmitted an electrical ailment to my...
uh, shouldn't admit it, but ...BMW.....thus I would
caution you all that NO car, truck, or trailer is immune
to his ways. I think motorcycles are OK, but can't say
for sure since my 19 year old 2-stroke has sat
neglected for some time now.)

Anyway, I thought that perhaps it would be prudent of me
to submit to this list for general review a list of those
ailments which have recently been detected and/or corrected
and/or soon to be corrected and/or just being let be....
(I'm generally of the opinion that if I couldn't fix something
the first time, I'll try again, but after two, maybe three
attempts, any non-life threatening ailments should just be
left alone....)

These, within the last few months:

Clutch slave flakyness (not addressed yet, intermittant)
Brake master problems (rebuilt, bled, rebled, rerebled, fixed by
		       adjusting the brakes....)
R/S tail lamp socket degredation (replaced w/universal unit,
problem reappeared on BMW R/S front
		       running lamp within a day)
Clogged rear axle breather (FINALLY replaced with fittings and
hoses running to the air cleaner)
Serious leaks from OD unit (my next problem, I suspect it ain't
		       breathin')
Serious leaks from gas tank (repaired in March, time to try
again-tank is in fine shape but appears
to be leaking from a seam)
Completely blown out rear diff pinion seal (replaced with a nice
		       old style leather one)
Blown rear U joint in rear propshaft (replaced both rear U joints,
front shaft new 2 years ago)
Splitting rear leaf springs (5 year old "genuine" pieces of shit,
getting replaced, hopefully tonight, with a
		       perfectly acceptable pair of ORIGINAL
		       equipment re-bushed springs)
Leaky carb (adds to the fragrance!)
Loud squeels from blower motor fan in Smith's shin burner heater
(fixed last Novemeber, and this November is
		       a long way off...)
Oil pressure sending unit leak (replaced with a kharma insulting
		       SIII type)
Leaky front swivel ball seals (replaced twice within the past
		       four years....given up)
Dropped muffler (happened on the way to a car wash....shame on me...
		       replaced)
Noises diagnosed as loose timing chain (replaced perfectly sound
timing chain, idler gear, crank end gear,
		       and cam gear)
Noises re-diaganosed as a loose muffler headpipe (hey, it was
		       *barely* loose....tightened just enough
		       to strip the threads....)
Flakey speedo needle (fun to watch, but has hypnotic qualities)

OK, that's the short list. If any or all of you are experiencing
any or all of these ailments in your rides, I gotta tell ya that
there's absolutely nothing I can do about it. I've tried. I've
tried everything. Had the boy exorcised. Leave smoldering spices
-especially nutmeg-beneath him at night. Got drunk with him and
pushed him off a bridge (he swam back). Sentenced him to two
weekends of hard labor dredging a pond. Let him get friendly with
a big black snake. Took him trout fishing. Nothin' seems to make
him happy.

sorry, mates,
rd/nige

How serendipitous, I shall shortly have 2 S1 80"s and will be picking up a
shipment including a couple of Wadsworth panels in a week or so. I have
a general question on the rivets being discussed.

What is the best way for a do-it-yourselfer to install the round head rivets?

I need to remove the trim off one 80" (Winston) for regalvanizing and will,
obviously, need to rerivet it. I'd prefer to use round head rather than snap
rivets to maintian the original appearance.

cheers,

Jeremy

And Nigel will be at the OVLR Birthday Party... Is there some
kind of immunising shot we can have for this? Nigel infects at distances
of hundred's, nay, thousands of miles, over wires, through the ether...

Imagine the devastation at 50 yards!

I know someone who was trying to get either Kinetic or Fielder suspension
for a Land Rover related project recently (about December) and both were
still under development and not yet available, even to a small manufacturer,
at that time.

I know I really, really want one or the other!!

Yeah, he did. Nige and Brooke are buds. Nige had his "disorders"

My original question, which was somehow ' truncated by lro-lite

What's the best way to obtain/send a check paid in pounds
Sterling?
	How did you pay Wadsworth?

as far as I know 4250 rpm is the equivalent of 72 k.p.h. in 3rd gear on

I had a 3rd party (Dingocroft) include the Wadsworth panels in with
an order of other parts. They, incidentally "take plastic".

WRT checks in pound sterling, I'd use an international money order.
It's been a long time since I've used one though. I'd check with the
bank on it.

There are NUMEROUS trails and places to go all over Arizona, and many in
the Phoenix area as well. I have a book that shows many of the trails
and all the state forest roads that I'd be happy to show you when you
get here.

PLEASE let me ("us all" in Arizona) know when you get here. There's even
an "Arizona" LR list - a spin-off of the LR e-mail list. There are some
VERY kind and hospitable people here, and I am POSITIVE that many will
want to go off roading with you.

My work phone number is 1.602.236-3544 and my home number is

different home number depending on where I move.

something like that? I have the original shop manual but it is not very

before I start? Is there anywhere I can look to find detailed

If you're planning on attending the Downeast Rally in Maine at the end of this
month, I have a couple of suggestions if you or your significant other chooses
not to camp. Living on an island and working around northern New England
requires plenty of motel room time. Ask for the "Jeffrey Aronson Bedroom."

1. Navigator Motor Inn, Main St., Rockland. Close to Owl's Head, local
restaurants and bars. Reasonably priced for the summer season (207-594-2131).

2. Old Granite Inn, Main St., Rockland. Very comfortable, stylish, B&B with huge
breakfasts, big rooms, and some great views. Pricier but you'll earn points (if
you need them) for your sense of style and asthetics. Near everything important
for the weekend.

It looks like that, once again, it should be a fun weekend.

It works out for everyone - Nige gets somebody to puke on, and Bill get

A win-win situation, so to speak.

Either that one or jeff berg's - then we can all get some amusement out of

87 Range Rovers (with a few more miles on them) can be had in the
Atlanta area for around $8500 if you are willing to shop around. Be
sure to inspect the front inner wings, upper tailgate and rear splash
guards for signs of corrosion. $10,000 should buy an 89 or maybe even a
90 model if you're any good at browbeating the sales staff. Sometimes
if you deal with a car lot that buys a lot of "high-line" vehicles at
auction you can get them to work with you and turn a quick but modest
profit on a vehicle - most lots love it when they have a buyer already
on the hook for a vehicle that will only be on their books for a day or
two. most of us would be really upset if we found out what you can
really buy a Range Rover for! Quite a few of these beasts seem to go
through the Orlando, Florida auction and Range Rovers have
traditionally depreciated like rocks so used ones can be picked up
relatively cheaply compared to some of the competition. Cheapest that
I've seen an 87 that was not completely trashed sell for was $6500 - It
was tempting to get that one for a "Trail Truck" and really test the
off road abilities of the Range Rover.

Yes it does have an oil bath filter. As far as cold, its not very
cold, about 5 degrees C I would say. When I do get her started she
runs very well. although I tend to think that the timing might be

Could it be a "lazy" starter? Are all the electrical connections
clean and bright? The battery in good nick?Does the engine crank
at normal cranking speed,or is it slow?
I realise you've checked the heater plugs, but it may help if you
get the parallel wired replacements.
If it was me,I'd yank the starter and check the state of the
brushgear,and have the battery checked.Of course,you've already

I have done all that you suggest, I have redone the starter, new
battery. The only thing I have not done is to earth it to the chassis
I ddid not think this neaded to be done as the starter is earthed
through the engine. We have a problem getting the parallel glow plugs
in SA It has been suggested that I use the plugs from the 2.5 TDI but
I would then have to get a sleave made (very costly).

Definitely helps.Mine always has had the earth strap, but a friend
of mine had a reluctant engine(rebuilt etc, same as yours). It was
suggested to him he did this, and it transformed the engine.Strap
goes from the yoke bolt on the starter with the nut on the end,
to any convenient(and clean)point on the chassis.
