I interviewed the head of Land Rover Canada recently. He suggests
that the Freelander (CB40) will never be offered in North America
because it was never engineered to meet the strict US and Canadian
safety codes. The engine is too small to meet market demand and the
vehicle would be too costly to convert.

Thanks Adrian
I have a winch already mounted on the front and I'm wanting to mount the
second on the rear. Certainly I love the "look" of a chunky winch up front
but, believe me, some of the places we go here in Botswana (sometimes on own
- sans a second vehicle) warrant a winch. When tackling a suspicious looking
track we always keep a look-out for a likely tree to winch from and have
used the existing winch up front to get out of several kinds of trouble.
Case in point - the Central Kalahari Game Reserve recently had amazing rains
with the result that the tracks in the reserve (which incidentally is the
same size as Denmark) turned into muddy, slippery streams. Trees are sparse
- but they are there and, when available, avoid the need to physically walk
the tracks to see if they are passable. When stuck, as was the case on
occasion, the winch helped us out of all sorts of trouble. Another case -
winching out on a buried spare wheel in the middle of Sua Pan which is 120km
long and 80km wide and nothing, but nothing in sight. So we need a winch -
and a second at the rear would be extremely useful.

Dave B mentioned that the NAPA 369 U-joint was a good replacement number.
This is actually the Precision number - NAPA in the US uses it as their
crossover.

It works well either way.

If the parts shop is too dumb to cross it, that same U-joint got used on
every rear-wheel-drive Chevy for many years - just pick a generic mid-60s
Chevy name and have them source that.

Lastly, stay far away from U-joints with no grease fittings. These may be
OK for Grandma's Biscayne wagon, but we need grease fittings to blow out
the gunk that gets in their in our pursuits.

To All,

Old News. Though things may change, the "inside" report I got a year ago
was that if, BIG IF, it ever makes it here, it won't be until 2000.

The story I got was that when the project was initiated, LRNA was still in
it's "lets keep the NA market small and exclusive" phase and didn't want
the vehicle and didn't ever forsee any need for it. That was sometime in
the early '90s. Consequently, the necessary features to meet the US
requirements were not engineered in. They now have cause to regret this
decision. The latest is that a version of the CB40 could be built in the
BMW plant down south or in Mexico. either way, it'll probably be a while -
if at all.

A belated thanks to the replies last week. I've since had that minor puncture
repaired, but the local trye place didn't do tracking, and couldn't shift
the overtightened bolts (no "whizzer" as the guy said). I have my wonders about
how good these guys are - some dodgy dealing with the price. Asked how much
(might be able to pay in cash rather than cheque or card) - "tenner" - only
got five quid - make it five quid then. Hmmm. A dodge against central office,
or a dodge against tax?

Anyway, went to my friendly village garage - a bit further out of the way, but
they seem to know what they're on about. They checked the tracking. This time,
it did indeed need adjusting. They also wizzed round with their wizzer
(they *were* responsible for 1 of the 4 wheels being too tight!).

I'll rotate my wheels before driving to Cambridge next week. If I bring my
rear wheels to the front, I'll be able to check for wear over the return trip.

The other news from the weekend is that, 4wd was working after all!
Oh well, I was taking the front propshaft off anyway (to replace it).

Cheers,

Richard (ex-Gurkha SIII 109 FFR)

Subject: Door Top bolts

Hello all-

The bolts fasten my door tops to the bottoms are quite rusty. One is
so rusted that it resembles a stalagtite, with absolutley no threads
visible. The other three are quite rusty where they exit the frame
of the dootop. I can even wiggle one of them about 5 degrees.

Aside from this, the doortops are in quite servicible condition, at
least till wife gradutes law school, and we have mnore disposable
income. Has anybody on the list ever contemplted/succeeded in
welding on replacement bolts? If so, I'd sure like some advice.

OK, being a new Rover owner I'm not ruling anything out...

I filled it yesterday for the first time. It clicked off at something
like 10-11 gallons. I was checking the oil so came around in a bit to
'top her off'. Well, I continued to do so, adding about another gallon
or more, until it was very full and then noticed the ground getting wet.
Gas was running out of my tank! I mopped up as best I could and
finally it quit (after it dropped out that extra gallon) and the needle
still registered full. Is there some kind of no-overfill rule I need
to know about, or to I have a leaky gas tank?

Thanks!

Hi steve,

I don't know if you have ever changed the door tops before, but I have
just done the job on two series III's.

The bolt is almost certainly unusable, and will probably sheer when you
try to remove it.

The bolt goes through the bottom of the door top, and is welded both
here, and to the underside of the "top-of-the-bottom-of-the-door-top"
that is the channel under the runners for the windows.

You could probably weld new bolts in, if you can get the old ones out
without the whole assembly reacting like a can being opened. Considering
the state of the long-bolts, this may indicate that the bottom of the
top section, especially at the front end, is more rusted than you
suspect.

The door top can be ordered without glass and is quite cheap that way -
I paid about 30 dollars (in kroner) here in denmark.

when refitting, be sure not to overtighten the long bolts, as this pulls
the channel down towards the bottom rail and distrots the cladding.

I dismantled my new door tops, and coated the cladding with silicon
mastic, painted the frame inside and out with rust paint, in the hope
that this will last longer.

Good luck - new bolts can work, but there is a risk of shredding the
frame in the process.

You could have a leaking tank - but there is one thing worth checking
first -

If you have a tank with two down pipes - like the diesel which has a
feed (combined with gauge sender) and a return flow, or on a petrol a
feed and a seperate gauge sender - it is possible to fit the sender so
that the float snags with the downpipe - thus, if the sender is
installed at the worng angle, when the tank is empty, the gauge never
goes above half full, and if the sender is installed when the tank is
full, the gauge never goes below half full.

Remove the sender, and note the travel.axis of the float to check if
this could be the problem - if so, rotate the sender one-sixth of a
rotation (60 degrees) so as to line up with the "next hole" in the
mounting flange . and refit.

Otherwise it could be a leak - but leaky tanks normally leak from the
bottom, not the top, and usually rather slowly - could be worth checking
the air-vent pipe and the filler hose neck.

Good luck!

4250 rpm. With a stock engine, anything beyond is a waste of time because
is't way out of the torque and power bands. A modified engine (headers,
2bbl carb, and 2.25L cam works up to about 4500rpm or slightly more. If
your engine is tired, stick to 4250 regardless. The valves float (with
fresh valve springs) at about 4800 but if you do what I did and install
heavier valves springs to bring the valve float level farther on, the
engine begins to grenade at about 5200rpm.
My engine saw 5500 a few times before it went on strike.

Replace 'em - it can be done without pulling th tank, by accessing it
through the panel above it in the seatbox. Put in new gaskets and Hylomar
them for a good seal, and that should deal with it.

If it doesn't (and you should probably do this anyway) inspect the filler

Talked wit a Rover dealer over the weekend and he did not seem to think the
freelander would be sold in the US markets. It seemed to him to be contrary to
all the qualities that make the Disco's and D90 and even the RR's such great
sales (superior construction vs unibody, etc.). The freelander seemed to be
aimed at a Euro, young, mid class, audience.

P.S.
Went to an off road outing in my father's new Disco and had a great time. The
folks with an unnamed (no advertising) dealership are great, even had Mack
Barber on hand to give tips during a run on part of the course (a very nice guy
as well as a great driver). We dented the crush pocket on the front bumper and
they offered to repair it. All the staff we met were very well informed and
committed to service. Anyone in the southeast interested can e-mail me and I'd
be happy to pass on details.

Subject: importing land rovers

Hello all,

I thought I was insane, buying my Dormobile 3000 miles away without seeing
it. However, in retrospect, I was fairly resposible. I had two people who
knew land rovers much better than I look at it (thanks again to Ted Howard
and Jeff Aronson). I also had lots of pictures (thanks to Mike Smith) that
covered most of the vehicle. I also had his descriptions, which were
realistic.

I also had contacted the CA state smog guys and checked out what I was
doing. I anticipated a problem with title, since the state of maine didn't
grant titles for old cars and CA is a stickler for paperwork. however,
things worked themselves out in a couple months.

I find it hard to believe that anyone would consider importing a vehicle
form a foreign country without having reams of paperwork and an "it's OK"
letter from everyone in the state and federal government who could possibly
screw things up. But, I guess folks try to import things all the time.

I would urge everyone who is thinking about importing a vehicle to please
check everything out before hand. I am convinced that vehicles can be
imported and everyone can win. In the SF bay area are a few vehicles that
have come over, each in a different way; one self import, one purchase from
a company, one through an ICI, mine by way of Maine. Later this year, my
friend should also be importing a vehcile he bought in England.

As I recommend to everyone talking about California Smog rules, don't
listen to anyone but the state smog people! Get the story from them and
not from someone who has a friend who did x y and z.

PS. Remember the guy a while ago who claimed to have found a loophole
through which to bring in TDi 110s? He emailed me that the price was $50K
but didn't seen like the vehicle would be CA licensed, that I would have to
do. ANyone care to email me with the details of how this guy thought he
could get vehicles onto the US and licensed?

Started to press in the new one on the short part of the shaft. The yoke

Anyone got a spare 88" rear drive shaft for sale?????

Subject: Rovers by the sea

The annual British By The Sea car show was held at the Harkness Memorial in
Waterford, Connecticut this past Sunday. There were over 40 Land-Rovers,
mostly heritage vehicles, in attendance. Best of all, I was pleasantly
surprised at the number and variety of "special vehicles" present at this
"local" event.

(Forgive me for leaving so many owner's names out here --as most of you
know, I'm bad with names. Jeff Meyer was taking notes and I haven't had a
chance to steal them yet)

There was an immaculate 80" Series I, complete with rear PTO unit, which I
learned is owned by a chap who lives near me. Mark Ohno drove his 109"
Ambulance, complete with an injured dummy in back, to the show. The last
time I had seen the ambulance it was just the rear shell sitting in Mark's
back yard, so it was great to see it running. Other "ultimate work
vehicles" included a tow truck and a log splitting truck. There was a
truck with a WWII radio direction finder (RDF) mounted in the rear bed.
There was an 88 IIa present that had a Euro-Ford V-6 (from the German
Capri) engine. Seemed like a neat swap, and there was plenty of room left
over under the hood. Seth (British Bulldog) was displaying a tough looking
trials truck--a coil sprung, V-8 88 hybrid. Herb Zipkin rounded out the
field with his IRF (I'd Rather Fly) Expedition Rover.

As always, Herb was happy to answer questions and share tales of his
adventures. He was also proudly displaying Bob Morrison's LRO article
(June, 1997) about Herb and the Rover. Mr. Zipkin even had some advice for
us single guys gathered around the vehicle, "Find yourself a girl and take
her on a trip like this. You'll either end up throwing her overboard or
marrying her."

Other highlights included Al Richer's field servicing lessons. He replaced
my valve cover gasket using only a SOG Paratool--and didn't get a spot of
dirt, oil or grease on his white shirt in the process. (Look for an
upcoming "Profiles in vehicle maintenance" photo feature on the EROS WWW
site.) Al did such a great job that I also allowed him to "show me how to"
adjust the steering bump stops. FINSUP no longer has annoying tire rub
during hard left maneuvers. And I now know how to fix it if the problem
reoccurs--"just ask Al ;-)"!

Members of Yankee Rovers took care of the mess detail--feeding the Rover
masses with hot dogs, deviled eggs, and a delicious sausage and onion soup.
Those of us who didn't shop salute you!

Prizes were awarded both as part of the car show itself (though I never
heard who won what) and, thanks to British Bulldogs generosity, special
awards for and by the Rover gang. These prizes included some great
T-shirts that Seth has had made up. You've probably all seen the ad about
the Italians designing cars according to their ideal image of a woman, and
the Brits doing the same. Now you can wear it on your back. Another shirt
explains why the British don't build computers. (Because they can't make
them leak oil.) My personal favorite was available in two versions,
featuring either a Rangie or a Series Vehicle, reading "Once the proud
possession of English Royalty. Now available to American Yuppie Scum."

Of course these days no States-side event is complete unless is invaded and
annexed by the Empire Rover Owners Society (E.R.O.S.).
<Empire/> Although a full fledged invasion
proved impossible, we did pull off a raid. E.R.O.S. members present
included Jeff Meyer, Al Richer (deputized on the spot), member-emeritus
Herb Zipkin and myself.

I also managed to continue an EROS tradition--I won another drawing. If
you read the EROS invasions of Assateague Island article
<Empire/ai-x.html> (Or see the latest
edition of the Rovers North newsletter for an abridged version), you'll
recall that I won a Land Rover Gear sweatshirt at the R.O.V.E.R.S. beach
run. This time my prizes included a pocket knife (presented to Al Richer
with thanks), a Lucas Lamps advertisement reprint (presented to Amanda
Richer who took my tickets and actually attended the drawing) and a 7/16"
-1/2" Whitworth combination wrench (presented to my toolkit.)

Credit for the tremendous turnout belongs largely to Mark Ohno. Mark
maintains a mailing list (New England Rover Registry) and actively
encourages people to turn out for this event. While I'd prefer a spot of
offroad driving myself, the event makes for an enjoyable day at the shore.

Bring them in under diplomatic permit, the dippy keeps in their

receive delivery a little more than a year later. (Can't do this in

Yeah! Then they'll introduce a "limited supply" of rag top models,
followed by an additional "500 units", then....

But in the end, supply will ultimately approach the demand.

Hello all,

A funny thing happened on the way home from the store last night... we
happened to notice an old flat fendered Jeep. So... we decided to take a
look on the way home, and jotted the number down. It turns out to be a
'47 Willys, with the original engine, and an aftermarket (maybe 10 year
old?) tub, and a tilt steering wheel job. My son became VERY interested
(17 years old) and quite honestly, it was refreshing to have him be
interested in this, instead of a muscle car. (His former "interest")

So... I meet with the guy, start it up, test drive in the dirt lot (no
brakes or licence) and... sold! To the guy with the first $800 (me!)
While we were looking at it, there were 3 -4 other people that drove up
and were interested in the Willys. It's not in the best of condition,
but for the price, I couldn't go TOO wrong. Right???

I MUST have gone ABSOLUTELY nuts!!! I already have 5 cars, now 6
vehicles??? 4 of them are 4-wheelers!! I already can't even get into
my 2 car garage, for all the misc parts and "junk" (Did I mention I
like Land Rovers?). I have NO place to put this even!!

Something's gotta go!!!

My first love (in 4-wheel drives) is Land Rovers, but this Jeep should
be interesting... Uh... it *is* still called a "Jeep" isn't it??

wondering if it was anyone on the list or if anyone knew about it.

Check your IIa's:

1. Toe. If it is toe-out, it will drive darty from side to side.
2. Track rod. If it is bent or been tweaked, it will pull in the backs of the
tires. See above.
3. Check to make sure your axles are bolted to the springs. ;-)

I'm sure there's more to look at...

Ahhhh! *Don't* use Armor-All. "Silicone" products make the stitching
brittle. They look great for a few years, then disintergrate. Much better
is plain ol' WD-40. Think about it: vinyl is basically petroleum with its

Subject: Re: oils again

Hi all - I know you don't have a Tdi in the US ( except somewhere where
Camel Trophy try-outs take place) but perhaps you can help. With each
passing publication on the subject, LR has become more adamant about the
requirement for SHPD oils for the Tdi. I haven't been able to get any local
dealers (including NAPA - ha ha I recall someone saying) to import any so I
plan to get a few Tdi comrades to organize a joint order from the US.

We can get stuff like Castrol GTX 2, Shell Rimula X, Texaco Dieseltex, etc,
all of which are - LR quote "for emergency use only, not to be used
continuously even if changed after 3000 miles, not for consecutive changes,
to be replaced as soon as possible, etc". The workshop manual then lists
what should be used, but they may be names known only in the UK.

These include Shell Myrina, Castrol Turbomax, Texaco Ursa Super TD, Mobil
Delvac 1400 Super, Caltex RPM Delo 450, Valvoline Super HD LD. Are any of
these familiar in the US?

If not, can anyone tell me what US oils meet CCMC D3 levels?

Lastly, what synthetic oil available there would be appropriate?

Many thanks from a few of us for any advice.

Well, with all intentions of replacing u-joints tonight, the job certainly
took a twist. As asertained by fellow listers(?), the problem was in the
drive line. The front shaft was so loose on the splines it almost looked
like there was a u-joint inside the rubber! Not only that, but the front
diff pinion bearing is loose/wore, don't know yet, but the u-joints are
ok. But the rear drive shaft, well, the splines are worn pretty bad, and
the pinion bearing has so much play in it that I'm surprised it still
turns. Now I'm happy to think that all the noise and vibrations I've felt
over the past few years might be gone with a little attention. Hey, it
never broke or fell out, so why should I look under there?

Out of curiosity I e-mailed him and he replied that it involved taking
advantage of a loophole in the law involving diplomats. I've reviewed
the law and I don't see the loophole. I suppose a diplomat could
"abandon" the vehicle when leaving the US, but the US government could
then seize it. I wonder if anyone tried.

Subject: Gazelle Rage

Can anyone help with information on the following:

Automotive News today reported today that a new company called Eurasia
Motor Corp. of Ft. Lauderdale, FL has started signing up dealers for
Gazelle sport utility vehicles. The first model will be the Rage with a
soft top. Accordeing to the company, the vehicles will be assemble in
Britain with off-the-shelf components from many different sources. The
body shell is described as originally designed to fit the D90, and the
engine as from Cosworth. There is an accompanying side-view picture. The
wheelbase looks more like 80", and the front and rear ends are truncated
just past the tires. Reading a lot into the shadows suggests the vehicle
in the photo has LR/RR suspension. Any guesses? Some sort of LR based
kit car body?

Before anyone in the US gets excited, there is no indication that the
company has any assests other than $30,000 deposits from "about 10
dealers". They claim a "letter of intent" but not a contract with
Cosworth for the engines. A dealer who has put a deposit down says "the
more you look, the less there is". There are no indications that any
part of the vehicle is intended to be LR sourced.

When installing a Fairey overdrive, it is supplied with the proper size
washer (tabbed) to replace the washer that is in it already. The tabs are
shorter ( I suppose you could cut down the tabs of the one that came out
of it). It's been awhile, but my instructions and diagram are here
somewhere and I could dig them up. Seems to me I remeber that if you use
the longer tabed one the tabs will interfere with something ( being very
precise here eh?) and get knocked off. I thought the statement was pretty
straight forward for anyone who has installed an overdrive, but now I'll
have to find the reason why . The Book of Words says its so, and I never
questioned why :->

Unfortunately, none of our club members(that I know of!) will be making the

donate some to the effort for the school kids. Does anyone that's going
have some room for some more cargo!? I'm sure we could get plenty of paper
to send, but I think that the weight would cause the shipping costs to
Belize to be prohibitive! If anyone has some spare room(or more than one

to have as cargo!

After shearing the front bolts on both sides when removing the door =

Hello fello Rovers,
I have a clonking rear diff for quite a while. I can't really
tell if it went louder or if it just annoys me more, but it
doesn't seem to be very sound and last week I decided to get
it done. The clonk appears when I get off the clutch and it
clearly comes from play in the diff (bushes and A-frame are ok).
Flipping through the manual yesterday I noticed
that the play in the diff is adjusted with washerlike (?) distance
pieces (hope this is the English word for them, since I have German
manual). Now I wonder if I can just measure the play and insert
the right distance pieces with the diff in situ. Or do I have
to get it all apart? I guess, I have at least to pull one half
shaft to get the distance pieces in.

Can any of the diff gurus give me a hint?

Many thanks,
Franz

There are a number of 'Kit Cars' based on LR running gear:

1: Foers Ibex, which is UK manufactured chassis/body assembly that
takes LR running gear, see their web site at

2: Dakar (cant remember the manufacturer), uses RR chassis/running
gear with new fibre glass beach buggy type body on top, I know this
one is already exported to Australia under some other name.

     3. Eagle RV Jeep, another fibre glass body sat on LR/RR chassis, looks
