Another possibility for the rear freezeup would be that the hi/low range
gear slipped into low gear and with the front wheels tied down in the
carrier the rear wheels would not be able to turn.

Con,
Sorry you had to go to all that trouble to find the cause of the wobble,
but, I e-mailed that cause to you on the 12th and cc:'ed to the digest
where it appeared as item #21 in the digest of 5/13/97.
Glad you found the other problem areas but the only ones that would
probably have affected the running of the engine, in the short term, would
have been the tappet slides and rollers. On doing a rebuild I routinely
replace these if they have been in service for a long time. The rollers
can get out of round and the clearance between the tappet slides and guides
can increase from wear.

Hi,

Well, the inevitable has happened. I've broken my first mirror on the
Range Rover. Luckily (for my pride) it happened in a VERY tight trail
section and I was miles from the nearest paved road.

I'm experiencing a bit of sticker shock at the price difference (last car
was a 109), but realize they are two completely different beasts.

So, anyone have an extra '89 (or same style) left side mirror they wanna
part with? I'm not sure about other years, but the '89 is a power mirror.

There's lots to learn about my latest LR product. Please be patient with
me, and I'll update you on the OME springs/shocks, skidplates, rocksliders
and custom bumpers I'll be putting on it soon.

Thanks!

What's the most ingeneous way you can think of to split wood using your
truck?

Howbout a giant screw w. a base plate bolted to a hub?? How to support
the log?
A splitter wedge in the hitch receiver and the log is positioned against
you neighbor's brick wall? right!

If I had a hydraulic winch, I'd think about rigging up a cylinder to use
w. the pump - have you seen such a setup?

ideas??

Well... Not yet. There's a chevy4 hanging from Scotty's roof about to go
in my 109". However, I have ridden in several. Scotty has had quite a few
over the years I've known him. Also, Brad Blevins has a '67 (I think) 109"
with a chevy6. Scotty's son Andrew used to have an 88" with a Chevy V-8 in
it -- it was fast, too! Morgan Hannaford has, I think, one in his, though
I've not ridden in it.

As soon as mine is back on the road, I'll let you know how it is!

Morgan's 88 has a six-cylinder (250cid) Chevy and it used to be Scotty's
son's as well. Don Morton <DonaldX_Morton@ccm.sc.intel.com> has a '60 SII
88 with a GM four and Scotty adapter. I have driven it off-road and found
the power and tractibility very good. It seemed geared a bit high, with 33"
(255/85R16) BFG MTs on it. I think he's had it for quite some time and is
happy with it. You might e-mail him directly, as I don't think he's on the
LRO list. It was in the vehicle when he bought it.

Granny

Hello,

I have just ordered a new waterpump for my IIa.
Before I go ahead and tackle the job, I thought
that maybe some of you might have done this
before.

It looks relatively straightforward. Radiator out,
waterpump out, waterpump in, radiator in.

However, if any of you have a trick or two i should
know, please let me know!!

Thanks for your help,

Chris

You don't need to remove your radiator to change the water pump. Drain
the coolant, loosen the fan belt, then undo the four bolts and remove
the fan and pully. You can now get to all the bolts on the water pump.
Loosen the clamps on the middle hose and the pump comes right off.

I did mine a couple of weeks ago...no problem.

Subject: SER Possible Clutch Problem

Hi all,

A little trouble on the way home. Today's the first over 90F and I was
running a little hot. I pulled off the freeway to run a little cooler.
(Might be low on fluid). Anyway, going up the last hill from home, 3rd
didn't seem to accel up the hill commensurate with the engine speed, and then
I smelled something hot. Shifted down to 2nd and good response. I thought I
had heard on the list about a trick of holding on the brake and slowly
letting out the clutch in 1st. With a little extra gas, I was able to let
the clutch fully out without killing it. Possibilities? At frameover, the
clutch worked perfectly so I've done nothing but adjust it.

All suggestions welcomed

There are two ways you can go. An aftermarket conversion kit, or locate a
2.5L engine's oil filter adaptor from a UK wrecking yard.

Our Mini club has done something a little.....bigger. Members from the
club took an old shell that was a complete write-off and cut away the
roof, the left side from the windshield back, and most of the back. The
car has 3 wheels -- two in front, and the right rear. From the front or
the right, it looks like a convertible Mini. The engine was removed and
a barbecue was put in its place. A wooden shelf runs waist-high along
the length of the inside of the car as a serving counter. It has decals
on the side that say, "Mini-Q". It's a big hit at the local field meet.

The Victoria's Secret catalogue was delivered to my office today. Curious,
as it wasn't addressed to me, but to another suite on the floor. I guess
the mailman saw the Land-Rover on the cover and naturally routed it my way. ;-)

Anyway, the vehicle deserves a closer look. It's a right hand drive,
five-door Series III 109. Despite the rear quarter windows, safari door and
hard-top over the driver, it's a *rag top*! The side curtains are clearly
visible in one shot...with roll up windows for the rear doors. A most
unusual set-up. Cheers

Brett's sounds as if he has no radiator shroud. Even if you do, you do not
have to remove the radiator but you do have to remove the shroud before you
remove the fan. Or remove them together which makes the removal of the
shroud easier but make removing the fan bolts difficult. Although it
doesn't seem as if you can remove the shroud with the fan in place, you
can. Just be careful and don't get in a hurry and damage your radiator.

Dean, I just (Saturday) installed an aftermarket one that I got from
British Pacific <BRITPAC@aol.com> for $65.00. It was very easy to install
and I wish I'd done it long ago! The instructions with it, though, say to
use the lockwashers and add flat washers to the bolts that hold the
original filter housing to the block. I found that there was not room for
both kinds of washers and so used only the lock washers that were already
on the original bolts. Maybe you could use some very thin flat washers but
I didn't have any.

I just spoke with a fellow on the weekend who was replacing his dead
2.25 with a Chevy conversion. Seems this whole thing was perciptated
by him converting to a spin-on oil adapter and installing it backwards.
Apparently there are valves which allow the oil to go only one way. He
managed to oil starve his LRover engine and it had a meltdown =:0

I don't know. I feel that if one had to change the engin of a Landie
to one from another vehicle then the Landie is not a Landie anymore.

There are a few spin on adapters out there, the one I'm using I got from
a guy in Toronto, works fine and easy to install, uses PH8a Fram filter.
His name is Paul Socholotiuk, @ 1-416-284-7103.
PS-- Headed to Nova Scotia soon ??

Nate, slipping in higher gears is a sign of a blown clutch - sorry to be
the bearer of bad tidings...

It's either the lining that's gone thin, or you've snapped a spring in the
pressure plate. i'd tend to suspect the former, which while an easy fix is
a bit labour, intensive...
