Hi Danial,
I have been a camper most of my life & also have been looking at
converting a 109 three door for travel in the USA. As you make your
conversions I strongly suggest that you use it before you go to SA.
You may find that a good idea does not work in reality. I don't see why
you could not mke a storage space in the rear fender wells of your 88
like my 109 has. Also you may want to look at the "working in the wild
land rover manual for aficra" Sold by RN. It make interesting reading
about you expedition.

Subject: Brakes

Keith Elliot writes re brake problem.

To test the effectiveness of the master cylinder, acquire 3 brake hose
clamps, ( self grip wrenches make a poor substitute, and clamp off the three
flexible hoses at the fluid entry end. The brake pedal should then be SOLID,
except for a little free play in the linkageand say a 1/16" travel. If the
pedal is solid then remove the clamp from the front brake closest to the
master cylinder and try again, there should be more movement, if there is a
lot of movement bleed that brake ( this way all the fluid from the master
cylinder goes through these lines, expelling air more efficienmtly , under
normal bleeding some fluid passes allong all lines and returns once pressure
is released, ) and check the adjustment, note how much movement , then
remove the clamp from the other front brake and repeat the test, this time
there should be a little more movement. Remove the rear clamp and try again.

We are travelling from Western New York next weekend to attend the
International Rally, unfortunately our Hercules Transport aircraft is having
problems with its 109 brakes so we are travelling commercial and leaving the
Land Rover behind.
I have competed in the National Rally most years since 1974, missed three
times due to being in the States on busines, one year managed a loaner motor
but declined an offer this year due to lack of practise. Perhaps this year
we may get to see some more of what is going on and do some parts shopping..
It was at the National Rally in 1994 ( when I was planning my exile ) when
I met a few friendly Yanks ( Majordomo , alias Big Bill, and John Hong ) )
who informed me of the existance of the Digest. Who else from the Digest
will be Llangollen ?

Subject: Two quarts into a pint pot

I had an interesting problem today -

Had to change heater water valve on motor, so I drained the coolant from
the bottom of the radiator into an empty bucket.

The cooland was relativly new anti-freeze, and free of small gremlins,
so after i had completed the rebuild, I wnet to pour the coolant into
the system again.

But when the radiator was full to the brim, and I had squeezed hoses for
air bubbles, there was still about half-a-gallon in the bucket.

Started motor and ran it for a while - stopped motor, removed radiator
cap, water bubbled out.

No space for more coolant, so replace cap, start engine, and take her
for a drive.

Come back after 15 minutes, stop for lunch (bacon and eggs sandwiches -
what else?) after lunch, open radiator cap - voila! - suddenly space for
more coolant - fill from bucket with old coolant - radiator full just as
bucket is empty.

So 2 quarts into a pint pot will go, but why? Maybe the thermostat must
be warm if you have drained the system? Dunno - but I have never seen
this one before!

Any words of enlightenment out there? Just begin your reply with
"Simple!...

I don't know if it's the same problem, but my newly aqquired timing
light diagnosed a similar wobble on my distributor, such that the timing
mark, as seen under the strobe, wobbled. The stroboscopic wobble was
about 15 degrees, and regular,

Today I dismantled the distributor, cleaned and banished a kilo of crud
from the lower bowl, lubricated all parts, set new points, and repaired
a chaffed wire to the condensor which i think was shorting to earth.

Reassembled the whole shabang, and it worked fine first time, and no
wobble.

I didn't find the cause, but it seems i solved the problem - I susbect
the electrical short - maybe causing intermittent/irregular firing, thus
a timing wobble.

Good luck with your wobble!

Subject: Re: Landys by the Seaside

Hi all,
Sitting here about 100 feet from the tropical Atlantic, with a year-round
onshore wind (these are the Windward Islands, after all), gives one an
appreciation of the effects of salt on LRs, and everything else. My
experience is with a 1995 90.

There are two issues here - having a LR by the sea, and throwing salt-laden
diving gear inside.

On the first, re the comment about washing - however often you wash the
outside, the steel parts will begin to rust very quickly. Within 12 months
I was dealing with problems in the doors - lower front and upper window
frame, steel-to-steel joints in the front bulkhead that are hidden behind
the dash stuff, rusted front swivel ball surfaces, in fact everything that
is not Aluminium will start to corrode immediately.

Forget any discussion about galvanic interaction between dissimilar metals,
the LR that is produced today must have the worst anti-corrosion prep in
the industry. Even my last Russian Niva lasted longer before showing rust
damage, and also waited 6 years, rather than 2, before needing an overhaul
of clutch master and slave seals.

For any LR destined for the seaside - get a stash of Waxoyl, be prepared to
drill a few holes to get access to box sections, and follow the directions
in the Porter & Pollard service guide.

On the second issue, salt-laden gear will destroy any vehicle. The LR rear
bed is not waterproof so salt water will reach the steel components. Fit a
bed liner.

Subject: Oil Filter cross-over number

Hi,

I thought I had a spare oil filter for the Snark (my '73 88 2.25-liter) but
can't find it. At one time I had the NAPA cross-over number for a filter
that I could buy here in town. I can't find that either. Neither the NAPA
store nor the local foreign parts store can find a listing for this
vehicle. Does anyone out there know the number for the NAPA filter (or any
other locally-available filter) for the short-type LR SIIA/III filter? I
thought I'd find it on Michael Carradine's list of cross-over part numbers
but it ain't there.

TIA,

Granny

Subject: Antifreeze in the valve guides (long)

Hi All

It has been awhile, but I am finally back!

I have been having some problems with the head on Emerson for awhile and
finally pulled it to do a valve job etc (AJR knows all the sordid
details). Anyway, after getting the job done and putting the head back
on, the truck was wonderful...for 18 miles until a valve stuck.
Unfortunately, I was off to the bush the next day and didn't get it fixed,
then was in China and didn't get it fixed....

Pulled the head off again yesterday and noticed
1) there was a small puddle of antifreeze on the top deck of the head.
2) there was some spots of rust on the valve gear (fortunately not
anywhere serious)

I wiped up the antifreeze without thinking, then popped the head into the
machinist to figure out what was wrong. They cleaned it up and said there
was antifreeze in the guides that had seized everything up.

So what did I do wrong? I used one of the BM copper head gaskets and
torqued it down to the specs in the manual in the order given etc. I did
it dry (there was a light film of oil on the block deck and the bottom of
the head that i wiped off with a soft cloth--no detergent or anything
though) with no adhesive. I was pretty careful aligning everything and
slotted in 3 bolts before putting the head onto the block etc.

As far as I can tell, the gasket looks fine. The only other thing I can
think of is that I didn't get the deck of the block as clean as I could
have (though I thought I was careful). I haven't tapped the oil pan drain
plug to see if there is any antifreeze in the sump yet, but I assume there
will be some.

Am I missing something?

Thanks in advance

Clinton

Its good to be back!

Sorry Adrian! I meant an actual physical wobble to the distributor. It
really does a wobble on the mounting plate, all is secure and real
strange looking. I'm almost thinking I have a bent cam, but it works just
