I saw a posting regarding external antennas for a Garmain 40 GPS reciever
. An excellent sig group to check into regarding the more techinical
aspects of GPS operation is to subscribe to: aprssig@tapr.org

There was several months ago some discussions regarding antenna design.
The "patch antenna" design is quite easy to build. I purchased a gov't
surplus unit (new)with 40db pre-amp for $75.00. Requires about 5 volts at
50-60 mils as I remember. If you want more info drop me a line.

Buy only the linings, for about 8 bucks a pair , and be sure to get
the rivets too if yours are riveted.. Take the shoes and linings to a
brake shop that can reline riveted (or bonded) shoes. Pay them a few
bucks to reline your shoes. Good as new, and you know they will fit
properly.

I live in Belleville, Illinois, about 20 miles southeast of St. Louis.
I am about to become a first-time LR owner as my 1997 LR Defender 90 is
due to arrive from Miami on transport in the next day or two. One of
the last 1997 Defenders to ship to the States so I'm told. Needless to
say, I'm excited!

Unfortunately, I'm leaving for Myrtle Beach, SC this Thursday, else I'd
be happy to show you around St. Louis. Yet to address your question re:
brewpubs...THE brewpub in St. Louis is The Tap Room, a microbrew located
in downtown St. Louis at the corner of Locust and 21st...Great
on-premises brewed beers (typically about 6-7 regulars with a seasonal
or two) and great beer-related menu as well.

If you want a great selection of draught and bottled imports and
microbrews, my suggestion would be Growlers, located in the Creve Coeur
suburb in west St. Louis county on Olive Road. Also decent beer-related
food menu.

Hopefully you enjoy your St. Louis visit...

OK so it is a while since this thread last came up on the list and I
have forgotten how to unsubscribe. The problem is that I don't know
which list I have subscribed to. It is the full real-time list that
delivers around 70 messages a day, and fills up mailboxes rather
quickly. Can Anyone Please tell me which list this is so that I can
unsubscribe, and get some work done.

Subject: No more Zenith Woes

To follow up on the periodical Zenith stuff, I have some more suggestions. Next
time you have the beast apart take a look at the float bowl valve assembly. I
found mine quite worn and replaced it with a p/n EZ-403 Grose-Jet, sells for a
mere $6.00 from D & G Valve Mfg Co. in Stoneham, Mass. A very ingenious device
using two steel balls for the valve action. I've used them in my '63 Healey (SU
carbs) for several years with good results. Good consistant fuel level and no
wear. Also, suggest you plug the extra hole by tapping it 8-32 and screwing in
an allen head set screw. Do the tapping by tapping upward to prevent cuttings
entering the carb body and maybe causing other problems. Replace the swollen "O"
ring, reassemble and everything works great.

I've also recently installed a Pertronix electronic point assembly with
excellent results. Its a Hall Effect type device, a magnetic ring assembly fits
over the rotating lobe, two wires connect to the coil, check timing with a
strobe lite and the 2.25 l engine is full of pep. No more points to wear or get
wet.

Every little bit helps

I've lost the original message explaining this - can someone please tell

I have investigated the GPS antenna issue. For my Magellan Trailblazer XL, I
bought a dashboard mounting kit with power adapter and extension cable for the
removable antenna. It also comes with a suction cup holder for sticking the
antenna to the windshield. I tried it out yesterday in my Mazda (still no Land
Rover) and it didn't work too well. I think that what I will need is a roof
mounted antenna. GPS World magazine has an add from Maxrad listing Center
Frequency as 1575.42 MHz and 50 Ohms input impedance. Their phone number is
(800)323-9122. I have also contacted Sensor Systems Inc. (818) 341-5366 and
Matsushita Electric Works Ltd. (408) 432-6927, but have not received any sales
information yet.

Email me your address and I will send out a recent copy of GPS World.

* All-aluminum: no need to uprate the springs.
* List at $1250
* Deal is available until end of day tomorrow.

Thoughts... The last LR I purchased was only $350 and it was all there,

I will admit that there are disadvantages to being in the US with a RHD however
parallel parking has never been easier and it is great talking to other
drivers in heavy traffic. Avaoiding cats darting into the street is much
easier too.

In all honesty I drive just as bad on whatever side of the vehicle I'm on.
Point of fact any vehicle has blind spots it is the driver's duty to deal with
those. At least it's not the prototype. Whichever way you'll be libel if the
accident is you fault.

The solution I used for squealing brakes came originally from the Rolls
Royce shop manual and was used at the RR dealership where I work during
high school. I works too.
First obtain some soft clutch pencil leads, 2B is good. measure the size
of these leads and select a drill the same size. Drill holes on the
leading edge of each lining in a staggered two row pattern. Insert the
lead into these holes and snap off a small piece in each. Reassemble
brakes. Squeal gone!!.

vermont also has that written into their state constitution, thats why
there are only 13 not 14 original states, VT at first, refused to join,

Actually London Transport use a font called "Modified Johnstone", the
original of which was created expressly for them by Edward(?)
Johnstone. Gill, I seem to remember, was a pupil of Johnstone's and
was influenced much by him in the design of Gill Sans.

Gill Sans, by the way, is the same as TrueType Humanist 521. (Or as
near as one's untutored eye can tell.) The capital letters look to be
wider than those in the LR logo -- perhap LR used a condensed version?

I am going to do my 2000 kilometer / 3 month oil change in June. I
bought one of those Slick 50 teflon type oil additive when I was in
Los Angeles. I heard synthetic oils would clean-out gaps and cause
oil leaks, how about additives with teflon. Any bad effects. This
will be for my 1985 LR88 series III with 2.25 petrol. The engine has

To those who haven't lurked rro list recently, there's been this "Average

What *can* you say... Let's see, I called my pal Dave (Letterman) and he got
back to me with a few things you *could have* said. Here goes:

What can I say,...
10. I really hate riding in AA Yellow Schoolbuses so I got an AA Yellow D90
9. I just feel *above* all the teenagers (on skateboards) while driving
8. I'm starting a teen owners' club. membership is currently 3.
7. I only use it when my Hu**er is in the shop
6. I only use my Hu**er when the D90 is in the shop
5. Every girl in (junior) High School thinks I'm cool
4. My mom thinks I'm cool
3. I can deliver a pizza *anywhere* in less than 30 minutes
2. I was born to the right set of parents (please, mom & dad, all I need is
an AMC Gremlin)
1. what *can* I say?! Can I have some gas money? Mileage sucks with the 3.9
V8.

I went to the '96 Billing. I camped on the field and ate there. Its about
an hour and a half North Eastish of London. With luck you can get a ride
from London to the meet. There are showers on the field, and there is food
available.

I think the '98 meet should be very, very good. I'm planning on looking
into shiping my 109 to Billing for the meet. I understand that the cost is
not all that bad, and it would dramatically cut in country costs since I
can live in the car.

You want to get there Thursday and leave at the end of the day Sunday.
Last year the Edinborugh Tatoo was about 2 weeks afterwards.

Subject: ID of Front Hubs

I have a 1957 Series I with front hubs that I've never seen before, and
can't find any matching hubs in parts catalogs or restoration manuals.

The hubs each have two "arms" that have to be unfolded, then rotated 180
degrees and nested back into the surface of the hub in order to "lock 'em
in". The hubs come straight out from the axle, about 4" across and have a
very flat face broken on by the heads of the attachment bolts and these "arms".

They are supposed to be stock hubs, but I wonder since I can't find any
references to 'em in the manuals. Any thoughts? Anyone out there able to
ID them for me so I know what I've got when I talk to parts suppliers?

Thanks,

Subject: diesel injectors again
Date: Tue, 6 May 1997 09:24:00 +0200 (MET DST)

Hi,
many of you may remember my question about diesel injectors some weeks
ago. I now have had them out and I want to let you all know how it went.
After all the talk here on the list I phoned Martin the greatest Rover
nut I know personally and talked with him about the problem. He just
told me to come to his place (about 30km from where I live) and I
could pull my injectors there and he would go with me to his local
injector guru just round the corner. Last week on Tuesday I did so.
The injector guru turned out to be a farm maschine and Fiat workshop.
They got at my injectors immediatly even we just dropped in there
without phoning them in advance. The old injectors had a bad spray
pattern, so I fitted the new set of nozzles together with the mechanic.
They where perfect. Even the opening pressure didn't need adjusting.
Total cost 20DM (12US$) for the same work the Bosch service in Munich
had quoted me 150DM (90US$) on the phone.
Refitting was easy. You just have to remember to get new copper
washers and heat shields.
Brumml runs much smoother now. Purring like a kitten err! tiger.
Yesterday I had the old nozzles cleaned in the ultrasonic cleaner
in our institutes workshop and hope to reuse them next time since
the mechanic said they normaly don't wear out too much, they just
get dirty. They don't show signs of wear under the microscope.

If anyone has further questions don't hesitate to ask.
Cheers,
Franz

Mike,

They're called Dualmatic Hubs. I don't know if they REALLY are stock, but I
have seen a few trucks with them, and they had Land Rover ovals on them (not
placed there by the owner, for they were definately older then he!), so it's
possible they are. I have SII that has a set, and I do like them: They have
an all-steel casing, so they're tougher than the Warn hubs, and especially,
the plastic Superwinch hubs.

this had shown the engine life increase from the normal 8k- 10k hours to

and had lost only 0.75 kW out of a nominal 195-207kW

Hi all.....

I've had a request from my other half (the boss) to put a reversing light

the light itself, but I was wondering about the other end (gearstick).

Anybody have any experience with these??

Well, I've done the switch, and just need to find a light. I'm hoping a
standard light can be used with a 24v bulb.

Anyway, there are Genuine Parts to do the job. You will need to replace the
bracket on the gearstick. The new version has a threaded hole. You also
need a switch (understood to be the same as the brake switch). This threads
in. All you have to do then, is to wire it up. Note: Try selecting reverse
before putting the panels back. I didn't...
Total cost: less than 10 quid.

One of the mags. did an article on the modification last summer.

Cheers,

Richard

These are Selectomatic freewheeling hubs - they're a pain in the butt, as
the cams freeze to the aluminum bodies and they become hard to turn.

I know them altogether too well - I have them on my 109.

Change the O-rings - it helps cut down on the leaking from the cam seals.
