Subject: Doors Needed

     All,

With frameover underway on my 1960 Ser 2 (not 2A) 109 SW, I am looking
for at least one replacement door, specifically the RH back door.
Most important need is for a solid door frame (the welded steel
channel skeleton) -- skin wrinkles/holes not so important. Also
possibly interested in a rear door. Locks, latches, tops, windows,
etc., not needed as far as I can tell right now.

Anyone with extra doors at reasonable $$s out there? Anyone breaking
LRs commercially where the shipping won't put me off? I am in DC
     area, USA.

Subject: Drop plates

Just a quick question:

I've just picked up a standard Land Rover drop plate on which I have mounted
a towball. I notice that some drop plates have bracing bars to stop it
bending under load. I have a series II (standard brakes) What is the
maximum (unbraked) trailer weight I should be 1)capable and 2)legal to tow
behind it?

I have only towed light trailers before... Is there any suprising quirks to
watch out for when towing MUCH heavier trailers?

What sort of ballance should I be looking for ie how much weight should be
on the tow ball mounting and how much ballanced over the trailer wheel?

Thanks in advance,

James Curtis (Newcastle UK)

I've trailered quite a few L/R's. I always used two 5/16 System 7
chains and loadbinders on each axle. Never lost one yet. (I did lose
a trailer fender once though)

These tend to be coilers where there is a curvier chassis with holes
drilled throgh for braces

750 Kg is legal limit for Land Rovers and on 10" drums without servo
quite enough!!

With unbraked trailers, their urge to overtake you when going
downhill.

75 kg is usual, just balance trailer as well as possible (single
axle?) keeping nose weight as above.

Water will also tend to cause the holes on the injectors to enlarge/elongate
causing the spray patterns to change. Can even cause the tips to be "blown"
off in some high pressure applications. Resulting poor spray pattern and/or
fuel droplets cause poor compression ignition and fuel combustion.

Can anyone tell me how long this return tube is? In the Haynes book

converting my Petrol L/R to diesel and RN wants $40 for the return

it's gone down significantly. I can make one for about $5, but I want

then Lucas electrics used to supprise me.

While my own Series III has the 2.25 petrol engine, I have known people
that have had, or have converted to, the 2.25 diesel. This engine is a
far cry from the 300 tdi engine Land Rover uses today. The old 2.25 was
introduced (in 1957?) in large part because back in the 1950s and 60s
diesel fuel was more plentiful than good-quality petrol in many of the
more remote parts of the world where Land Rovers were sold. The engine
does have better low-end torque than the petrol engine, and it gets
better mileage IF the speeds are kept within reason, which means about
45 mph. Don't forget, this engine and the vehicle it was installed in
were designed way before 75 mph motorways.

According to people I know who have owned Land Rovers with this engine,
and comments from people in the UK who have had a lot of experience with
them, the 2.25 diesel does not last as long as the 2.25 petrol engine.
It is very noisy, and has even less power than the already low-powered
petrol engine. On-pavement performance is very sluggish. The general
consensus is that while the engine offered both marketing and
operational advantages in its day, you're far better off with a
petrol-engined Series Land Rover today.

I'm sure there are Land Rover owners out there who feel differently
about the old 2.25 diesel, but based on everything I've heard, read, and
been told by people with experience, it's not an ideal engine,
especially if the vehicle you're interested in is high mileage. Chances
are, you'll be looking at having to do some major engine work in the
near future. None of what I've said applies to the current Tdi engines,
which are very good performers even at today's highway speeds, and seem
to be quite long-lived. The Land Rovers I rent during my frequent
visits to the UK all have Tdi diesels, and I've always been extremely
impressed by them. I wish they were available in the US. But if you're
considering the purchase of a Series IIa or III, my own recommendation
is that you purchase a petrol-powered model. I think you'll be happier
in the long run.

I went to Midtjydsk in Viborg today to buy an adjustable towhitch - 703
kr plus VAT and it moves up and down enabling me to set the height of
the hitchball to match the trailer - wonderful! How ever did I live
without one.

Bought a new steering shock stabiliser for my 88" - the old one was worn
out and had no effect on dampening the steering - for those who have
never driven with one of these (I believe they were only introduced in
the late 70's for 109's ) they are wonderful! steering and handling is
much better, and more comfortable to drive.

An interesting LR collection was on display at Midtjydsk today - A RR,
two old civil defence 109SW one series II one series III, a newish def
110SW, and eight military 88"s in various states of repairs, four of
them lightweights which is a rare sight in Denmark. They also had a big
old NATO trailer

Also saw a FWC ex-civil defence with personell cab for sale in the "Blå
Avis" (a sort of exchange and mart newspaper) 30,000 kr.

Interesting place Midtjydsk, and the prices are really fair. Service
quick and friendly and it seems that they have almost everything for LR
from series 1 to defender , as well as everything imagineable for J**p -
including a 1942 original ford j**p in the foyer.

Have just read that the Museum of Army Transport, Flemingate, Beverly,
closed near the end of January with little notice.

There must've been L-Rs represented in the Museum's holdings. Anyone
know what was there and what disposition might be?

Sorry to hear your tale Duncan. Until 5 years ago I lived in Bradford and
am very familiar with the Huddersfield Land Rover Refurbisher ( for
refurbish read "well we washed it " ) and your tale is similar to that of
many other " satisfied " customers. They are EXPERT at the small print type
of selling and have the typical salesman's answer to everything. The
warranty is not worth the paper it is written on. Another practise is to
talk the purchaser into having lots of extras fitted so that the cost is
significantly increased. It was amusing to see the later adverts when people
tried to dump the vehicles at some high price with the byline " refurbished
at the " Huddersfield " @!%$#@%^& . as if this gave it some kind of accolade.

RTC 7043 is the hydraulic pump only. To fit it to the series gearboxes
requires an adaptor plate 580027 and a drive piece 580064 then thiere are
the linkages and connectors required.
The series gearboxes are different to the LT gearboxes., otherwise the
overdrive would fit the LT box also.

Subject: Rust? What rust?

Fellow Rover-folk,

Does anyone out there know of some sort of propreitary high-tech goop that
removes rust? Specifically, I'm trying to de-rust my breakfast piece (and
eventually the other steel bits that won't be re-galvanized) - a wire wheel
on an angle grinder works but I'm looking for anything that might save some
time and be a little more thorough. Ideas?

Cheers,

It's bound to make it weaker and probably increase the risk of
stress-cracking your windscreen. There is, however, a way to have it both
ways, sort of. You can remove the center bar of the screen, enabling you to
have single-piece glazing which, in turn, will allow you to use the later
style (one-motor) wiper system, reverse one of the drive-gear positions, add
a third arm, and thus have three wipers which wipe in tandem, giving a good
clear area of the glass. This is the reason I plan to eventually do this.
But it's only having the bar on the *outside* that would interfere with this
set-up. You could still have reinforcement brace on the inside, as was done
on a couple of older sportscars (Porsche Speedster comes to mind but I think
also the MGA had this).

Hope this helps!

The museum was privately run (in no way connected with the Ministry
of Defence), and the straw that broke the camel's back was the
withdrawal of a local government subsidy. Many of the exhibits
belong to the Army and the National Army Museum, which will take
them back. The MoD is looking into the possibility of the NAM taking
responsibility for all the vehicles. I don't what what if any Land
Rovers were involved.

Dear Major,

Who is this tims@postoffice.durango.mjt.com - I keep sending letters to
you to send to the others, and you keep telling me he is undeliverable
to, can't you just zap him off the list - if his server is down he won't
know, and if he doesn't exist he won't mind - either way, there's a few
of us who won't have to be reading mail telling us that a letter which
we sent to someone we don't know couldn't be delivered because he may
not exist.

Or am I the only one here receiving these messages?

Happy rovering major!

Does anyone know how to write an e-mail which will automatically be sent

postoffice.durango.

Is this a new improvement to the major? I preferred if before when I got
12 letters a day from people who do exist who wanted to unsubscribe,
rather than people who don't exist who seem to have subscribed anyway?

Answers on a postcard please...

I have a spare tyre mount plate (a square plate with three long bolts protruding)
mounted through the rear door - in the centre between the ribs, at the
bottom.

Looks nice with a spare tyre on it, but impossible with a tow hook at the
same time - now I am considering moving the plate to above the centre horizontal
rib, still in the centre, but raised by theheight of the plate, plus the
height of the rib.

The question is, will i still be able to get to the door handle and lock
from the outside - or am I about to drill even more holes, spoiling further
the rear door which I have recently rebuilt and reclad, only to find that
the spare makes it impossible to open the door without climbing over the
seats!

I can measure this tomorrow, or get the XYL to try and open the door while
I hold the spare in place, but I did wonder if anyone else has tried this
experiment - and what was the result?

I don't know if this mount is original - square plate, the size of the
square formed by the ribs in the door frame, three wheel nut size bolts
about 8 inches long, a metal rod handle in the middle, and a circular plate
held onto the three bolts with six wheel nuts.

anyone recognise this beastie?
Subject: Chassis maintenance (was: waxoyling)

Richard,

I'll e-mail you more details (I posted a complete rundown of my
experiances with "chassis maintenance" on the list some time ago) but
what I just wanted to say is that when I did mine I had litterally tons
of sand in my outriggers! What I wound up doing is drilling a 7/8" hole
facing away from the wheels in each of my enclosed outriggers and then
THOROUGHLY rinsing out the sand while keeping a screwdriver handy to
"unplug" the drain holes at the base of the outriggers and also to
knock loose what I could get at inside the outriggers. After I had
nothing but clean water flowing from the drain holes I gave it a couple
of days to dry out and then fitted rubber plugs to the holes and then
THOROUGHLY tarred over the plugs.
One other word of warning that I didnt cover in my posting that will
apply to you, dont remove the mil-spec undercoating unless its damaged or
obviously bubbling (a sure sign of rust underneth). the places that I
removed mine just to check exposed "factory new" finish on the frame. If
you have a damaged or flaky spot, "open up" the damaged portion a bit
more and then "liberally" apply the new undercoating.

Cheers,
Todd

Get some Naval Jelly or Extend. Both names are trademarks. Naval Jelly is
pink and, well, jelly. Extend is made by Permatex and sprays on or brushes on
clear to milky and dries black. Just follow directions. Both these products
leave a black coating that protects the metal, but prime it real soon. The
breakfast is small enough, a machine shop might be able to put it in the same
device or tank they clean engine blocks in. That would work, too. Just
remember to get some primer on it pronto, if that's what you do.
