Subject: D90 spare tire

A word to the wise....or tip of the day....

If I had not attemped to remove my spare tire off my '95 D90 in my
garage, with all my tools and greases I would be calling the 800 number
for a mechanic....

I have the locking nut on my spare, which is the worst invention
ever...and I needed a 1 1/16" socket and rachet to unfreeze this crappy
device...actually once I took the tire off all the treaded rods where
starting to rust out....Thank you Land Rover for saving me .03 cents for
not packing that in grease so that if GOD forbide I was in the middle of
east-bum-F*** on a trail I could take this useless keyway and get my tire
off.....

Ok I'm better now....The lesson is, plan ahead.....Always be prepared...
Plan for the worst....yata...yata....yata....

..or Joe Lucas tries to make a fool out of me (again).

Last Friday on the way home from work I seemed to have fried my third =
voltage regulator in 2 years. These are not cheap bits of the electrical =
system, and they seem awfully sensitive. I have also had to replace the =
generator. All of this has me pretty fed up with the entire electrical =
system that puts out marginal power to begin with.

I'm not exactly sure how the VR blew, I was driving along (in rush hour =
traffic, of course) and fup! the motor dies and all the power goes out, =
except the horn. I coasted into a gas station, where I tinkered with it =
for 20 minutes before saying "screw it!" and jumped the coil right off =
the battery. That got me home. Tinkering some more over the weekend got =
power back to the system (again, not exactly sure how because I didn't =
really do anything), but the ammeter is varying according the revs, =
which is typical of a bad VR.

So, the *last* time I went through this, I promised myself that the next =
time I'd replace the generator and voltage reg with an alternator. There =
seem to be pretty good instructions on RoverWeb for installing an =
alternator, but nothing on converting to negative ground.

Can someone enlighten me on the procedure for making this switchover? =
Things I've seen mention of are switching or diabling the ammeter, =
swapping the coil leads, and something with the fuel guage. What else is =
there to worry about? Thanks much,

Tim

Subject: soft top on 88 questions

Hi all,

I removed the hardtop on our 59 88 this last week and started to install the
soft top. Lots of little screws and parts and no instructions. I'm wondering
if anybody has some instructions on where the little hoops go, how the tie
down straps are routed, and where some of the little "studs ???" go: they
are like rivets but thick the whole length except the round head (about 3/8
" total length).

Thanks,

Clayton

Subject: bushing questions on 59 88

Howdy,

I was working on replacing the springs on said vehicle this weekend. I was
able to remove the springs okay but the bushings are considerably more
problematic. How do I get the outer piece of metal from the bushing out of
the frame? I have tried to hacksaw this piece out but I am also scoring the
inner part of where this tube goes: not good!! The various manuals suggest
using a tube drift or other appropriate means of removing bushing. How is
this done???

Also, the manual suggests that the new chassis bushings are press fitted.
How is this done?

Thanks,

Clayton

Hi Clayton -

Always a hard one this - try heat (plenty of it) - try getting someone
with a lathe to make you a drift - a short solid bar turned exactly to
the outside diameter of the bush, which when hardened, should be bashed
into the hole - hopefully pushing the old bush out. Heat is probably the
best tool though - alternatley with a douche of cold water to expand and
contract the two parts from each other. Maybe both methods in combination.

If/when you get it out, apply "gallons" of copper grease to the
hole and the new bush - might help next time you have to get it out?
If the winch happened to be a Warn M8274, I have a mounting plate

I haven't got a winch yet - but I have often speculated that when I do
get one, I will make two mountplates so that the winch can be mounted
"on-location" either at the front or the back of the truck, so as to
have a greater possibility of having a winch at the required end of the
vehicle - it must work as long as the power cables are heavy enough? Has
anyone tried this? Having the winch at the wrong end seems to be a
problem - if the car is stuck in the snow for instance, it's difficult
to use a pulley and a local tree to divert the cable backwards? How does
one normally solve this problem with a front only winch - by backing
into all dodgy terrain? I'd love to hear others experience - mine is
only theory on this subject!

I didn't own a Disco then, but I do now, and I'm trying to find something

If you live close enough to a military base, contact their DRMO office for
information about their next auction. You can pick up the little 1/4 ton
trailers for as little as $175 there. The last auction I went to the
trailers went for a little over $200 but they had been completely
reconditioned and looked just like new.

Michel:

I have a 1965 109 that leaks too. They all do. If it is the carb that
leaks, it belongs on a Land Rover where it will feel at home.

"I need to find a kit to fix or to replace the bottom part of the carb
(under the "bowl") since fuel is leaking thru the shaft that goes across the
base."

The part you want is called the throttle body. I have bought these from
carburetor service shops. You might get lucky and still find one. They
were made of cast iron in several sizes, so take yours with. If it will fit
onto your float bowl it should work, even if the throttle bore is larger
than your original.

It sounds like the problem with your carb may be a worn throttle shaft. The
nickel plated brass shaft is much softer than the cast iron throttle body.
You may be able to buy just the throttle shaft. If so get new screws to
attach the throttle plate to the shaft. These screws are peened in place
and are difficult to re-use. Also get a rebuild kit and install these parts
while the carb is accessible. Be sure to set the floats correctly.

"On what american models were these carburetors fitted?"

Early 1950s Chevrolet & GMC products. The one you want is the Rochester
Model BV 1bbl, it has a 30.9mm venturi and flows 167cfm. If you get a whole
carb, get one from a pickup, as these are fitted for manual choke and have
an airhorn which adapts easily to the Land Rover air cleaner elbow.

What I have done in the past is get a piece of pipe just a little larger
in diameter than the bushing and about three inches long. Then get a
grade five or eight bolt about 3/8 or 7/16 inch and about six or seven
inches long. You also need a nut to fit the bolt and a couple of large
washers. Place the piece of pipe along side the bushing, put the washer
onto the head of the bolt and place the bolt through the pipe and the
bushing. Put another washer and a nut on the other end. Then simply
take a couple of wrenches and tighten the bolt. The bushing will be
squeezed out the other end and into the pipe. You can reinstall the
new bushing the same way but in reverse and without the pipe.

First of all, what are JATE rings?

Second, in addition to the tie down eyes, there are loops welded to the
frame (unless this is only on my vehicle?).

Third, Genuine Land Rover military recovery loops are available for real
heavy work (are you planing to put your vehicle through the Camel
Trophy?) Rovers North USA has them for $45 each. Part # RRC3237 I
don't know if this is a LR part# or RN part #.

Lpg is fantastic if your do it right. That means LPG only.
Otherwises you have comprimises on both fuels. The LPG
engine should be higher compression (12:1) and have a different
cam. Lpg ( any gaseous fuel for that matter) mixes with air far
more easily. It doesn't dilute your oil. The has very little carbon
in it so you oil doesn't get dirty, but you should still change it
often. LPG has a ~10% lower BTU/Gal content so you mileage goes down
a bit. Also, many LPG vehicles ( taxis, etc. ) do 1 million miles or more
before the engine quits.
You can run all sorts of camping toys of the tank ( get a big one).
Contrary to popular belief you can fill the tank at the side
of the road using a BBQ gas cylinder.
If you use you truck on road, with a little of road, and where
LPG is availible, then go with LPG definatly. Otherwise stick
with petrol or diesel ( my first choice )
Any question feel free to ask.

If this is a real condensor (a capacitor) then if it isn't fully
discharged, one might not be measuring its ohmic DC resistance but
detecting the fact that it has a voltage between its plates.

If it has a big capacitance, one might even be charging it from the
ohmmeter which will show an initial high current flow (as an apparent
low resistance).

Looks like the whiz kids at UAP or McKerlieMillen need a specific
application in order to get a kit or a new carb. I have a part number that
is stamped on the bottom part of the throttle body, just mm's from the inlet
manifold. Mine is stamped (I think-35 years of crud there) 7004522. This
number doesn't exist anywhere in their books.

Is it possible for you (and for all others on the list who have nice running
Rochesters) to tell me what number is stamped on the bottom of your carb?
Seems that not all Rochesters run well on Landies and finding the right jet
can be very painful. Mine is running perfectly, it just leaks all over the
place. Ideally, I just want to change the leaky part and leave the rest of
the carb untouched, if possible.

According to the books at the auto-parts places there are gazillions of
different part numbers for a gazillion of 1 bbl Rochester carbs. I probably
can go a bit further with the specs that you gave me, but I would also like
to have the different carb numbers. Could make a FAQ with it after that...

Thanks for your help, and support,

I rebuilt an old 2.25 petrol engine I picked up for 90.00 pounds
(sterling). A local engineers did a rebore and checked the crankshaft
for me and sold me new pistons.

I was short of money at the time so a Turner rebuild was not an option.
One of the problems I had was with the camshaft, I had a choice of two
and both were well worn, with flats on at least one cam. I put the best
of the two in resulting in a noisy tappet.
I just cleaned the head up and fitted new valves and guides and springs.
When it was eventually back in the landy the water pump leaked and I had
to change it, that was rather annoying, I had painted it as well!!

The engine has been running well since 1990 and has done over 53,000
miles without major problems.
This all cost me less than 200.00 pounds and taught me a lot about the
2.25 petrol engine so I think the effort involved was well worth it.

squares, about 20mm x 20mm x 5mm, marked "CFLO". Is this some snake oil from
the sixties to improve milage or something? And no, they're not magnetic :-)
