Sounds like a good price.

Back in '85 Land Rover was part of Leyland so all the engines were Leyland
engines.
Could be that what they mean is the engine came from a Leyland van (Freight
Rover), they used the 2.5D and 2.5TD engines.

In the UK we call it the chassis, in the States they call it the frame.

With a new chassis and replacement engine the main thing to worry about is
the gearbox and transfer box. Drive the Landy in all gears in both high and
low ratio, also check you can engage and disengage the diff lock. Examine
the state of the swivel balls, should be nice and shiny with no rusting or
pitting, possibly worth jacking the front up and checking for play in the
swivel pins (hold wheel at top and bottom and check for movement).

Hope the Landy checks out and you get your first taste of the joys(and
pains) of ownership.

New ! Improved ! http://www.Land-Rover.Team.Net/

Hello to all out there,

as a new member of the list (passive for a few weeks) I'd like to place my
first question (but expect, it will not be the last!).

I hope to get some advice to the following project (becomming a LRO! -
whow!):

After looking for a LR for a long time (just a few weeks, but too long),
I'd like to buy the following 'bargain':

1985 Land Rover Country 90 , SWB, diesel, power steering, new chassis,
tested, in very good condition
Price irish pound 4,500 (~6000$).

What I know:

 - I should buy a series LR (my next project ???)
 - all in all 160,000 miles
 - new engine after 110,000 miles, new engine is from Leyland (2.3l, 2.5l ?)
 - new chassis from 1996 (the old one took a bumper-crash(?) and the rust
away)

What I don't know:

 - what diesel engines for LR have been built by Leyland (so that it would
be 'original')
 - means 'new chassis' in every case 'new frame' too (or is it just the
same)
 - what (expensive) main-faults have I to expect (and to prove) at that LR

As I meet the owner (and the LR) in two days, I would be happy about any

Thanks in advance

Achim Schrade

Non-LRO so far, but hopefully that changes soon

I'm sorry if I didn't make it clear enough, but I was refering to the
US. The 90/110 have been made since'83 and then renamed Defender in
'90, so ofcourse there are many out there with several 100k miles on
them. But the Defender has only been imported into the US since '93.
First year 500 110s, '94 a few thousand 90s. '95 another few thousand.
'96 no were imported, and for '97 they are imported again. There are
less than 10,000 Defenders in the US, and since they have only been
imported for 3 1/2 years, I would guess a Defender with high miles is
quite rare.

By the way, Land Rover North America, not a dealer commented on how well
it was "holding up"

This is mere coincidence that this one also involves sporting goods...
An old tennis ball makes a great holder for nuts and small parts. Make a
slit with a utility knife,so that when the ball is squeezed, you can pop
little things inside. It will remain shut and keep the small stuff from
getting lost. Especially handy when working underneath in dirty
conditions, and you can use a marker to ID parts.
Good for spare change too.

I don't think these books are out of print. Possibly the older ones, are.
The newer one covers 1958-1985 Series II, IIa and III Petrol models. It's
Haynes number is 0314, ISBN 1 85960 147 2. This info is out of Haynes
Publishing Booklist valid until June 97. Their email address is
sales@jhhaynes.demon.co.uk. Many book stores will order this manual in
without problems. I order books out of this catalog regularly from my
local Canadian Tire shop when the Haynes books go on sale (usually
$9.95 CDN) about once every six weeks or so...

Last time I was looking for a carb, I just called my local parts place
and asked them to give me a price on a rebuilt carb for a 1954 Chev. This
is supposedly the carb with the "all around float bowl". The price was
around $105CDN no exchange, availability was about 4 hours... I don't
have the part number info with me, but I do at home. I decided to rebuild
my Solex instead, as several locals indicated that this was still the best
all-around carb for a power-economy combination.

This may be one source of your frustration. In fact current only flows in
the output side of the coil at the moment that the points are either closing
or opening. The reason is that the current is generated by a magnetic field
*moving* through the coil. The magnetic field is only in motion when it is
expanding right after the connection is made, or collapsing when the
connection is broken. This is why transformers only work on AC current,
where the field is constantly reversing polarity, and generators only work
while turning. (The magnetic field is moved mechanically through the coil in
this case.)

I think that on some new ignition systems, a complicated little box produces
AC current to be fed into the coil, which would produce a constant spark,
but this is very different from the old point contact system that we're
dealing with.

...So the upshot is that to test your coil, you need to supply an
intermittent source of current, mimicking the points.

Sorry to disappoint you here....

Wrong. The spark is only generated at the instant the points open. What
happens is that when the points are closed and current flows through the
coil, a magnetic field is built up inside the coil. When the points open,
the current stops and the field collapses. The collapsing magnetic field
is what generates the spark.

 I do not

You should get a brief spark whenever you open the points.

Handy as a cover for your towball as well.Doesnt matter if it get nicked.

Well, response and been thin and completely split as to whether the cover
should come off or not.

With that info, I called RN and my mechanic to hear their opinions.

Both said, (paraphrased) : That little bit of rubber? I wouldn't bother. If
you do see some change in performance, you might then think about taking of
the valve cover to see if there's a problem. (My mechanic): You know, these

big as engines go.

My decision: Being a naturalist, I'm going to follow one of the laws of

I recently bought a drip tray to beat all drip trays. Whilst preparing to
do major Open Heart Surgery on the V8 a friend offered to help and I
scavenged through his tool shed to see what bits I could 'borrow'. He had
just laid down some block paving and had bought a large octagonal 'tray'
for mixing cement on from a DIY store. I measured it and found it just
fits perfectly between the wheels of the 110 and is about 3-4 inches deep
and made from 8mm thick plastic, its very strong and light. I would think
that its more than big enough to empty your engine/gearbox oil into,
although emptying the tray afterwards could be tricky.

I now leave it under the 110 all the time whilst I'm working on the
engine, it catches all the bits that normally end up on the floor.

For UK readers I bought it from Do-It-All and it cost 14quid, you may
have to search a bit for them though, I dont think they are widely
stocked, the store I bought one from didnt even display them, but did
have one 'out back'

Yesterday the steering seemed to be getting quite heavy. After a round
trip of about 90 miles the steering was almost uncontrolable without
heaving on the wheel for all I was worth. I checked all the obvious
things, power steering pump belt, bled the power steering, checked
dampers, tyres, etc. and decided it could only be the UJs so I bought two
new ones (my local LR dealer parts dept usually let me have things
sale-or-return so I tend to get all the bits I might need then send back
anything I don't use)

After removing the old UJs they one was quite stiff but the other was
possitively 'stuck' in one direction so I fitted the new ones and the
problem was fixed.

BUT I soaked the old ones in de-greaser for half an hour and after that
they were both fine! So I now have two brand new ones fitted and two
serviceable used ones in the ever growing 'spares' box

I have always thought that the mark was the Full mark or a MAX mark, could
explain why the thing makes so much noise :( even though I think they all
are noisy anyway. Can anyone confirm if the mark is Max or Min.

I am trying to get to the back issues of the lro-digest but can't seem to
find them where I believe they are. My browser says it can't find the site.
Anyway, can anyone out there tell me how to get to them?

Next question. I want to get a pair of rear seats (bench or singles) to
drop into the back of my 88". Anyone got a useable pair that they'd sell?

Thanks,

Mike MacDonald

Subject: Serial #'s

Fellow Rover-folk,

I have recently deposited in my driveway a $600 pile of scrap aluminum and
iron oxide that is purported to be a '66 SIIA. To distract me from the
herculean task that awaits me (frame-over, et al, etc.etc.), I scraped the
old grease from the block to reveal the serial # (me being a curious lad).
I have been told that this is not the original engine, it has a Rochester
carb and the bolts ont the head opposite the intake are secured with wire
(this is common to military Rovers, no?). Anyhow, here are the numbers I
found: stamped on the block by the water pump, 25181058F. Cast into the
block under the exhaust manifold, 541874 (w/ "FF3" immediately beneath
this). The VIN is 24414659B. Any ideas about this lump?

Ta,
Wes.

I've done it, especially to the T-box which is *un*vented. Remove the top
cover of either the T-box or OD and drill a suitable-sized hole. I think
that the axle breathers are 1/8" NPT. However, the axle breathers are
designed to fit a thick casting, not the thin metal of the cover, so you
have to "build up" the thickness with a scrap of metal, suitable sized
washer or nut that can be brazed in place. Unless you are damn sure of your
brazing skills, do this on the *outside* of the plate. Cheers

WOW
According to a sheet I just got from project traceability 24414619b was begun
14 april 1964 . So yours would have been made right about that time.
No clues on the eng# tho. :-)

Has anyone tried an additive called PROLONG? I saw an infomercial a
while back. I think it featured Al Unser and other "celebrities"
endorsing the product (unlike Slick 50 infomerical a long ago).

Yea, I've seen that infomercial way too many times. If that stuff is so
good than why haven't I seen it in any stores. Slick 50 is at least
sold world wide, in stores ranging from PriceClub to PepBoys. After
doing some reasearch and talking to many people I really don''t think
any engine addatives are needed. If you speak to the owners of high
mile cars, they key of them running so long is proper maintanance and
constant oilchanges. I once spoke to a Volvo owner with 235,000 miles
on his car and it never needed any major work. When I asked what his
secret was it told me he changed the oil every 3500 miles, thats pretty
much it. I don't think he used any engine addatives.

In the Seattle area, I *think* PROLONG is sold at the Love Pantry, but
what has this to do with Land Rovers?

Hi all:

My Series III 88 has been sitting in the backyard for 5 (five) years =
now. EEEEEK!!!!

The neighbors say it's gotta go or else they'll tell on me to the City =
Zoning police.

So, I'm kinda at a loss as to what I should do to get the thing up and =
going. It was running fine last time I parked it...I figure all precious =
and vital fluids have leaked out or evaporated. So now what?

(Please don't ask me why I parked it for that long...I get a little =
misty when I start thinking about it.) :-(
