I ended up by "accident" putting Dexron II D fluid into the LT77
gearbox of our Discovery (it was all I could get hold of on a Sunday
a.m.). Over 12,000 miles (48K - 60K), I noticed no difference at all
in the performance/behaviour of the gearbox. When I drained it, the
usual amount of iron fillings stuck to the magnet. I replaced it with
ATF type G at 60K as this time I remembered to purchase it by the
gallon in advance! Would it be a good idea over an extended period in
terms of premature wear, acid/alkali etching? I have no idea. Why
does Land-Rover recommend this ATF rather than more modern
alternatives, I have no idea although I have often pondered this and
other questions.

I don't know where you can buy these modells, but a friend of mine has one
to.

In Germany you can buy a R/C Discovery. It has nice features: 4X4, 3 diffs,
separately kit to convert it to a CT Discovery.
The only drawback is the price: 500 DM without R/C sender/receiver and add.

I was underground at Premier mine yesterday, and like all (I think) mine =
using block-caving, they have lots of 4x4's wandering around the =
tunnels. I was disgusted to see that most of these were T*y*ta =
landcruisers with the tops cut off. Most of them seemed to be out of =
order with bonnets up or bits being removed. The only Landy I saw was a =
topless SWB and seemed to be working just fine. I didn't have enough =
time to take a good look at it as I was in a hurry to catch the cage =
back up, and busy dodging a maniac driving an LHD.

So why are there no landies in there? In a video I saw of North-Parkes =
in Oz, They were also using that other brand. I think this is just lack =
salesmanship from LR.

P.S.
The road conditions are much like central africa, just without any sky =
or trees to bother about, and the only wildlife wear gumboots (wellies).

I assume it could harm the gearbox. As when I bougt my 110 with LT77
gearbox and LT 230T transferbox there was Dexron II D in the gearbox, and
now some bearings are not quite new anymore. Most of them are now
producing a whining-noise (when driving only). And also in the
transferbox there wasn't the right oil: 10W40 instead of hypoid oil. So
this needs an overhaul too.

Any other having experiences with these wrong oil-use item?

It's some kind of oil used in gearboxes. It stands for Automatic
Transmission Fluid I think, it sounds nice to me anyway. And in my
opinion it could stand for All Transmission Fluid also, since this oil is
used in the LT77 gearbox, wich is not automatic.

Thanks for the replies regarding my dynamo/regulator problems. I did
take the dynamo in to the shop that recently rebuilt it and it was burned
up. It wouldn't generate when hooked up to the tester and the solder had
melted around the coil. I also took in the voltage regulator to be
tested to see if this is the culprit. I should find out today.

My theory so far is that somehow there was/is a loop in the system that
pulled everything it could out of the dynamo and thus burning it up. It
could either be from the way I have rewired the new wiring harness, a
faulty regulator or a malfuntioning dynamo. A manual that I have
describes that "when the dynamo is run at high speeds on an open circuit,
a high voltage builds up." Now I just need to find what is causing the
circuit to remain open, and as I understand it, its the regulator's job
to open and close the circuit?

Thanks for the help as the plot thickens.

You mean to say that your bearings only whine while driving? Count yourself
fortunate. Mine cry out in the early morning... "its cold out here, why don't
you build a garage..." Then they whine when we pass the Mobil station: "what,
no Mobil 1, why not?!"

Subject: ATF alternatives for manual.

The BG Company, of Wicheta, Kansas, makes a product called
"Syncro-Shift" to replace light oils in manual transmissions and transfer
cases. The problem with ATF and motor oils in gearboxes is that they lack
shear strength compared to gear oil. The Syncro Shift is a light weight oil
that has the shear qualities of gear oil and a very high resistance to
heat.
I discovered this as an answer to the Range Rover Borg-Warner
t-cases burning up their ATF in just 15,000 miles (turning the fluid black
- these 'cases get very hot, hence the transfer case overheat warning
light). I then tried it in LT-77s and other manuals that use light oils
with good results.
The transfer gearbox problem was solved. The BG handled the heat
better and I suspect the 'case ran cooler as well. In the LT-77s & LT-95s,
customers reported quieter operation and smoother shifts. Should work great
in the later 380 gearbox as well.
As far as finding BG products, many auto parts stores (not usually
the big chains) and dealerships may have it. Otherwise call Wicheta, Kansas
phone directory info for the number. They can either sell it by mail or
send you to the nearest dealer.

Hi Ross

Right now the chasis is on four new wheels , all between them is
new\painted\sand blasted...
That was a lot of work. I'm working on the braking system. Engine is 2.25
after full
restoratoion. And also the gearbox.
All the seals & rubber is new ,which I hope will prevent the histeric loss
of oil.
I looked for original seats and seat base for a long time .
As for series Land Rovers in Israel it's like looking for palm trees in
Alaska.
Finally I found it all & the engine hood of sIII in a garbage pile.
I'm looking for someone to do the bodywork & paint.
No one wants to do it as soon as they realise "it's made from aluminium
!?!?"
Still looking...
Now I'm going to send all that needs galvanization after I finish cleaning
all the paint & rust. Which is what I do most of the time since I started.
Is the end near ? I hope to put it all together soon.

I found sI LWB in someone's backyard. It looks very original . The man says
that it only
needs oil (I knew that ...) .I was very tempted to buy it because in Israel
SWB is considered a "private" car & LWB is considered a "work" car.
That means that you can place a Diesel engine only in LWB , that applies
also to j**p!
He asked for 2,000$ on it. I just can't deal with another one right now...

I have family in Perth & Sidney so I hope to see "Castrol" when I come to
visit .
bye

New ! Improved ! http://www.Land-Rover.Team.Net/

Hi fellow Land Rover Owners

As you may remember I had a dud Discovery TDi ES Auto.

Well Land Rover S.A. replaced it for me with the V8i ES Auto (Oxford
blue Grey Leather)

The '97 Dicoverey is a totally different vehicle to the '96 version.

The differences are as follows:

1. The build quality and finish is superb up 100%
2. The wind noise from the doors is down 100%
3. The suspension is softer but just as capable off road.
4. No more manual aerial it is now fitted in the rear quarter window.
5. Front seats have bun warmers.<<Food preparation device????
6. Front windscreen has a demister fitted (very fine wires).
8. The Disco is quiet very quiet!
9. The Radio and CD Changer works superbly, no jumps even in tough
    off road conditions.
10. Everything but everything works!!, totaly fault free.

It has POWER lots of POWER and Oh! that lovely burble of the V8.

Cheers

Stan

Dixon was right on.
I called my local auto paint equipment supplier.
They sell a 2 pack of paint strainer / filters, brass screen in a
cannister configuration with a nylon washer / seal that will slip
over and seal on the pickup tube. If these are impervious to paint
and thinners, they should be fine in gas. I got a pack reserved that
I'll pick up at lunch today. Stay tuned for the PM report.

Hi Sandy,

You're not the only person to notice this change (said after I
noticed the number of 'file not found' errors go from 1/1000 to 50/1000),
so I've taken the liberty of copying the list on this.

The 'new' stuff does not live under '~majordomo/lr'.

Just go directly to
	OVLR/
	ROAV/
or the secondary at
	http://www2.land-rover.team.net/OVLR/
	http://www2.land-rover.team.net/ROAV/

If you stop by the new top level pages from either the new or the old URL,
most should do the 'right' thing and redirect you to the new URL.

If you have bookmarks to files within the ~majordom/lr/lr-images/ directory,
they will be broken, as all those pages moved somewhere else. If you have
any hot list or book marks to pages under ~majordom/lr/*.html, you may want
to remove the '~majordom/lr', and the same goes for page references to
'playground.sun.com' - that is now (more or less) a different server than
'www.land-rover.team.net'

Hi all,

Just heard back from the machine shop: Head is ok but needs some work over
cylinder 4 (the one where the exhaust valve rammed through the piston).
Block is ok but will need to be bored out.

The shop manager said that looking at the one cylinder, he's surprised I
could get the piston out without a torch.
Amazing what a 8 pound sledge and a steel pipe can do.

Gang,

Installed my hoop kit on the 88 last weekend, and am awaiting the arrival
of the canvas. Some bits that I didn't install are the hooks that go by
the doors, the horse shoe looking tie downs for the back, and a couple of
footman loops. All of these attach directly to the body. Can someone give
me the correct, "stock" locations for these bits? Please provide a couple
of reference points (ie, degrees and distance from a known point) for each.

I realize what I'm asking is a genuine PITA (measuring and all), but I
really want to get this right, and I don't know of any series soft tops
within several hundred miles of here for me to look at. There might even
be a beer in it for you.

If you can help, please respond to my home address:
sfugate@conc.tdsnet.com. I've unsubscribed at work for a couple of weeks
to go enjoy the pleasures of Marine Corps Base, Camp Lejeune, N.C. Anybody
on the list live in that area? E-mail me at home before Saturday if you'd
like to hook up. FWIW, the unsubscribing thing was a piece of cake.

The PO of my S/W solved a similar problem by moving the step that helps you
climb into the rear from dead center (where it should be) to the left, where
it clears the towing bracket and actually is also more "organic" since one
tends to open the rear door only partly and then enters not parallel to the
vehicle's axis, but at a 30 to 45 degree angle, so the step is exactly where
you need it. Hope this is clear?

Subject: Doubling of Cal's Non Op Fee

Frank asked when the Forces of Evil (FoE) at California's DMV doubled the
Non Operation fee. The truth is, I don't know. Having been in the antique car
& motorcycle hobby for many years, I have my ear to the ground for these
sorts of shenanigans pretty closely. I saw no notice of any sort in any
publication. Could be somewhere in these stacks & heaps of unread or
partially read magazines laying around my office, however.
My first notice was after I had made out my check to not register my Norton.
As I was tossing the dross into the trash, I noticed an innocent looking
mailer insert, and something in it caught my eye. This was Tuesday, last.
Speaking of not registering my Norton, does anybody remember the letter
someone supposedly sent to the government a few years ago, inquiring about
getting into the not raising hogs business? (farm price supports) The writer
asked many questions like; how much does the government pay for each hog not
raised; what sort of hogs he should not raise; what geographic area was best
to not raise them; what feed should he not feed them, etc. Perhaps we could
get some politicians to privatize the DMV's not registering motor vehicles
business.
I would certainly like to get into the not registering motor vehicles
business. I could cut the DMV's rates, offer faster service, and I would take
your money for doing nothing with a smile. Wouldn't that be an improvement?

I was hoping to find an article covering the tyres but couldn't readily

the tread pattern, I believe it has mor side plies.

The XCL has been discontinued although you can still get old stock. I

Dixon suggests I use an SU carb....

As a tent stake, maybe. I hate SUs - have ever since I owned a Volvo with
the damned things.

The filthy wretches wouldn't stay in alignment more than 10 miles - and
this was on a gently-used street car.

Strombergs are a lot easier to sync and adjust - and they stay that way,
long as you replace the diaphragms every year.

Because Dixon has used both, (though would prefer a 45DCOE on his

Er, Volvo... Speaks volumes... *if* you drove something real...

Don't need no stinkin diaphrams... Obviously you are suffering
from a snowfall, and wa\e all know that snow and New England doesn't mix.

How detailed is the diagram? I have been thinking about this idea for a
while. Why couldn't someone just build a "replica". I am sure the patents
are all expired by now.(well maybe not you know those germans;-))
If someone actually has one, lend it for a while to someone who could make
some measurements and figure out how to replicate it. Not such a crazy idea
really. I'm sure most of us would pay dearly for one. As it stands I might
just try to do it myself next year sometime, after I manage to find time to
master the art of metal fabrication( I am also thinking of making a
manifold adaptor for a SU for the beast just for the heck of it) if no-one
else gets the ball rolling.

yep. Moving it to the right (the opposite of what your are saying) would
be a definite no-no.

Move it to the left, does this interfere with the trailer socket (which is
to the left of the tow hitch?

Actually, If you look at LR genuine folding rear step, it mountsd to the
left of the tow hitch, and should/does not interfear ith the towhitch at
all.

Although this is not 100% LR news, I figured people might be
interested. According to the April issue of CAR, Rover Cars, will make
its return to the USA the end of this decade/early next decade. The
Pres. of BMW also admited that the Rover Group made a mistake for
designing the LR Freelander(CB40) & MGF for only European markets. All
new cars & LR will be designed for all major world markets, including th
US.

Why does the phrase "designed for all major world markets" fill me with fear...

Can we expect Rover to start designing it cars for the US, at the expense of cars like the MGF for Europe???

Anyway, I would have thought they would have liked the CB40 "out there"

Our web site, which has been up for some 18 months, while being old
and far less attractive than the latest "publisher" types, has now
got a few scanned jpg photos. I have reduced them in size (they are
only about 15k each) so that old, slow modems don't hold you up. On
the Offroad.html page there are a couple showing what the EASYLIFT
does, in case you ever wondered. If you would like larger versions of
the image files, just say so.

> Why does the phrase "designed for all major world markets" fill me with fear...

Because its sounds like Ford's propaganda regarding the Mondeo?

Mass global market car designs might seem like good sense at first, but it
will lead to bland cars. Also, different markets will have contradicting
design tastes. full stop.
global market designs also lose style. Lets face it traditional Land Rovers
*ooze* (literally) style. So do some American cars. Mondeo? Nope, I don't
think so.

> Can we expect Rover to start designing it cars for the US, at the expense of cars like the MGF for Europe???

The MGF is doing very well in the UK from what I hear. Someone at work is
thinking of getting one. The waiting list is so long that nearly-new
vehicles cost virtually the same as new ones.
If they're selling like hotcakes, and making money, what's wrong? They'll
pick up a few sales in foreign markets, but parallel car designs designed
for those markets will sell a few here too!

(Of course waiting lists could be due to the "Morgan philosophy"!)
