Subject: Re: A few queries about my new SIII.

Lenny,
Welcome to the list, it's good to have some more Scottish based contributors.
As to the tyres, LWB rims will fit and there are pros and cons (Always the way
with Landies).
For:
	a.	They will give better gearing in the cruise ie/ more speed at less revs.
Therefore higher top speed (unlikely with a 2.25 diesel) or better economy at
normal speed. Maybe even less noise.
	b.	They will give much better ground clearance off-road.
Against:
	a.	Depending on the engine you have, acceleration (never a strong point)
will become diabolical. If you have the 2.25 diesel like mine the engine will
cope, but only just and top speed will still be around 55.
	b.	The turning circle will expand noticeably. Try driving a 109 off-	and
compare it to an 88. That said, many find the increased ride height more than
compensates for reduced maneuverability off road.
	c.	Your speedo will under-read by about 20%. A replacement is about £70 - or
just do the mental maths.

If your current tyres are good, use them. My 109 has recently had a new set of
rims and 750.16 BFG Trac Edge tyres. So far they are a good compromise, good
traction off road and low wear and rolling resistance on it. However, at £95
each I'd wait until you need them. I'd advise against fitting purely road
tyres, at sometime you are bound to find an opportunity to use the red lever,
and a set of van tyres would really embarrass you.

My Lindsay Porter Guide lists your tyre pressures, as 25 psi front and 30 psi
rear. These stay the same if you fit 750.16s.

Jumping out of gear is a SIII gearbox trait. It is usually due to wear in the
synchros which requires a gearbox removal to fix. It can be due to a weak
detent spring in the selectors and this can be fixed (I am told) with the box
still in place. Or you can just live with it and pray it doesn't happen to the
MOT inspector. However, be very careful off road. My 109 jumps out of second
which is annoying, if yours leaps out of first on a steep downslope it can be
very dangerous. On difficult descents I would physically hold it in gear, or
better still get a passenger to do it.

Your question about the lights is puzzling. My 1976 SIII has 5 warning lights,
in the left hand clockface, a green Oil light, a blue Beam light and an orange
Heat plug light. The right hand clockface has only a red Charge light. By the
toggle switches to the right of these is a Low fuel level light, which on mine
helpfully informs me when the tank is down to 97% full. All these lights are
of the round faceted type. I can only guess that on your later model a
rectangular Brake light has been fitted, perhaps you have some new fangled
dual circuit system?

All the best with it.

Are you sure that the voltage drop was in the wire and not in the
connection at the starter post? Check for a voltage drop by leaving the
wire connected, and then place one test lead on the wire end, and the other
on the terminal. Any voltage that registers on your meter isn't getting
through the connection. Add up the total of all of them and you'll be
surprised how much voltage is being lost. Do the same thing on the ground
side; you can even go straight from the starter body to the ground side of
the battery, your meter should register 0. If it doesn't then check the
other connections. Any voltage that doesn't get through a connection is
going to be dissipated in the form of heat. If it cant get "out" of your
starter, well...

The rectangular light refered to is indeed for a dual-brake system.
It tells you when you have no fluid left in your system, and try to
use the brakes!

A note on the orange lamp: It is either heater plugs or choke.

Dear Friends
I have decided to transport my 1962 Ser11A hybrid to Ct to have it re-wired. Mark Ohno
is in North Haven Ct and has lots of experience doing this work. He is presently
re-doing my Nada 109. The man is a genius and a super craftmen.

Can anyone reccommend a Transportation Co who could transport(open) my truck from
Orlando Fl to New Haven Ct?
Thanks

This info canbe found in your the SIII Repair Operations Manual, and maybe
the owners manual. Correct tyre pressure for an 88 with 7.50x16's is 25
front and 30 rear, or 25 rear for softer ride, or emergency flotation
pressure something like 12 psi.

Hmmm...you want "radials" with a road "bias". You are funny. I think you
mean a road "tread pattern". Just get them the right size for your rims,
and fit some radial style tubes if you're rims are original.

>I have indicator bulbs in the dash, however when I start to indicate, a

Could be the choke warning light, clean the sender connection on the front
of the cylinde head right behind the thermostat housing, and the switch
connections on the little box attached to the choke cable. This may or may
not alleviate the problem. Usually strnage electrical faults such as this
are due to a bad ground of the entire dash system. try tightening the thumb
screws on the backs of the guages, and then find the black wire that goes
from the accesory socket and disappears off into the main harness. This is
the ground wire for all of your guages, etc. It usually terminates
somewhere in the engine bay, make sure it's clean and well connected.

Probably the brake pressure warning light, is your vehicle equipped with a
dual brake system? US SIII's were not bleesed with such devices, but we
know they are out there. If luck is with you it will remain unlit.

>> On a slight hill, muddy path, 1st low, it jumped out of gear a couple

A sure sign you'll need to rebuild the box eventually, if you wantt to do
any real off-roading. Popping out of first on a steep descent could find
you at the bottom in much shorter order than you might wish for, possibly
on your neck! For now I'd stick with it, but i'd learn how to get down
hills in low 2nd and pumping the brake slghtly. Descents that aren't very
steep or that are steep but not long or muddy can usually be done in 2nd
without brakes.

Well, I doubt its the "cylinoid" (solenoid) becoause if it was the starter
wouldn't be spinning. Our petrol models are fitted with "niertia" type
starters that have a spiral groove machined onto the pinion shaft. There is
a gear with spiral spline to match, and when the shaft turns, then gear
wants to stay where it is and thereby gets sent spiraling backwards (toward
the front of the truck) along the shaft until it engages the flywheel. When
the speeds are equalized, the gear goes back forward on the shaft and its
job is done. If you get a little rust or oil on the shaft, the gear can
stick, and then the starter will just spin and spin until you run your
battery down. Not puuling too much of a load, This could take a while. I
have had this happen during: a. periods of heavey rain; b. heavy
off-roading involving deep water and mud, without the benefit of a wading
plug; c. deep snow driving. Usually a few sharp blows with a length of 2x4
placed vertically behind the exhaust manifold, or horizontally from inside
the wheelwell if you have the exhaust manifold heatsheild fitted, will be
enought to shock the pinion free from its stubborn position.

Ben-
Why don't you just leave the truck up north until it is done?
Seems like most of its mileage is spent on a trailer going up 95...
While you're at it, bring the darn thing up for the Mid Atlantic Rally this
fall...

Hope you get it sorted out this time.

What's the fair market value (ballpark) of a used Warn M8274 winch

It is also starting to lean in one corner as well, it might be related, I'm
not sure. I drove over to my mechanics but he was out getting beer, so I
drove right home and put it in the garage until I figure this out. The noise
stops when the vehicle comes to a stop. On the drive, someone said a tire is

If all is in tip-top shape (gears, bearings, seals, motor, cables,
switching, wire rope, hook, casing, etc) then maybe 500 bucks. Anything
less then excellent condition means work for the new wner, and a possibly
expensive purchase of parts. I refurbished an old pre-8274 M8000, for which
parts are NLA. I put in all new bearings and seals, and replaced the cable
and hook. I ditched the antiquated switching mechanism for a pair of
ordinary starter solenoids wired in parallell activated by a switch on the
dash. Doing the bearings meant complete tear down and reassembly of the
winch. The sellers original asking price was 300 dollars, but i got 'im
down to $175, ane then with about $50 bucks worth of bearings and seals,
$75 for 150' of new cable and a hook, $20 worth of battery cable and $25
for the two solenoids. So a total of about $350 clams. The 8274 is a little
bit nicer than my model and has the distinct bonus of parts that are still
manufactured. Oh, and it has a decent brake mechanism.
So I think $500 for a good one with nice cable is a fair deal.

To determine whether a tire is flat, do the following:
Look at it. If it is round on top and flat on the bottom, it is most
likely flat...that is to say that the desired tire pressure is no longer
at a level that will give the desired performance charachteristics.
There are a couple of levels of severity. Level one is very low
pressure...the sidewalls are bulged out and pressure reading is very low.
Tire is driveable for a short period. Level two reveals a tire that is
completly flat and has the roadwheel mushing the sidewalls out. Can't
drive on it. Level three is a tire that has completely shredded and may
have either rolled off the rim or is merely a carcass of flayed nylon
cords and steel belting.
Judging by the description of "whumpa, whumpa" an educated guess would
place you in a level two or three siuation.
Remedial action is the removal of the roadwheel and its associated flat
tire and replacement with a temporary spare.

FWIW I paid $450-500 new for my 8274 in 1974 or 5.
I supose, like most things, it's worth what the market will bear.

This is a follow-up to the comments regarding using the original UK license
plates on Series Land-Rovers. In Virginia it is legal and was recommended by
the Department of Motor Vehicles. Also, I did not have to purchase vanity
plates, or pay any extra fee.
On another subject - does anyone have any extra side steps they would like to
sell? If so, please E-Mail me directly. Thanks.
P.S. I'm sorry if this was sent twice - I'm having some E-Mail problems.

Subject: Re: Advice sought on refurb LR purchase

Josh,

I've seen/worked on two trucks from Renewed Traditions. Both were decent
trucks and I think Sean treats the owners correctly. He is not a mechanic,
etc, just a sales point. The trucks are "overhauled" by AVON Landrovers in
the UK. The do a good job of paint, trim, etc. However, they must use
apprentices to work on the export trucks. A lot of niggling things that
should have been corrected before they left the UK. Nothing major, or that
you can't fix yourself (I replaced a defective tranny on one which Sean
supplied a very sound replacement). Sean is good about supplying whatever
you need, and making sure the customer is satisfied. The trucks are as he
advertises as far as condition and I wouldn't be afraid of as far as the
overall mechanics and the frame. BTW, one of the trucks is for sale. It is
a 109 with a V8/five speed and Defender style front end. The truck is
strong, and other than some minor work (door seals, valley gasket on the
engine, etc.) is a great truck. The seller got in over his head price wise
and just needs to sell it. Last I knew, he was asking $13,000 for it. It is
located outside of Richmond, VA. Let me know if you're interested.

Subject: Big Bad Engine sounds

HELP !!
My '69 LWB 109 (no name yet) makes awfull engine sounds.
It's done it for all the 400 miles I've driven it, and I'd could use all
the help I can get :-)
It only happens when applying power, not when engine-braking and in the
first instance I thought it was a rather loud form of pinking. So I
tanked leaded petrol, did the egnition timing, checked the carb etc.
This has increaced power, and the noise! :-(
In retrospect it sounds a lot louder than pinking, and sounds more like
a big metal marble in the cylinder.
Could it be piston slap? I checked the valve clearances, and didn't see
any broken valve springs.
My plan was to convert to diesel some time, does this sound repairable,
or should I hurry the swap up a bit?

Second problem.....

LWB brake bleeding.... I've converted to dual braking system (thanks for
all the tips) and now I have a series III brake pedal assy, with vacuum
assisted master cylinder. However I can't get the brakes really hard.
I can press the pedal down 3/4 way down, afterwhich it's pretty hard. I
still don't have the vacuum hooked up but I don't believe that'll make
much differance, except in foot power neccesary.

I need to get her through the MOT tommorrow, so if anybody is the mood
for a bit of thought...

Dear all, Nick Fankhauser wanted to know about wading plugs and got some
advice. Not that it really matters, but under normal circumstances the plug
is off the hole in order to let any engine oil that trickles past the seal
into the clutch housing drain out without contaminating the clutch. When
wading, the ingress of water can be avoided by using the plug.

Subject: Rear hub dismantling

Dear all, today I started dismantling the rear hub on Series I 107" S/W. It
has a fully floating rear axle, similar, afaik, to later Series rear axles.
The brake drum, brake shoes, brake cylinder, drive member and the halfshaft
came off fairly easy. Them there was the big nut with the metal tab bent
over it; I unbent the tab and used my genuine hub nut socket on it, but it
would not budge. Since I did not have any long lever to use on the socket
and it was getting late anyway, I stopped and came home to ask the list. Is
there a trick? Or does one just use a long lever and strong words?

BTW, I found out that the long halfshaft on the vehicle looks a lot better
than the spare I bought...

Thanks in advance

The "Gym bag" is more like an overnight/travel bag. It will hold my
binoculars (not obtained from Nissan) plus a camera to take pictures of
Hale-Bopp *and* it matches the color of my D90! I also thought it a great
deal from both the LRO digest for learning of it and Nissan. Now if we

VORIZO and I don't get out much these days, (bits and pieces of it are all
over the garage) but I've taken to waving at Discos and Range Rovers from my
wife's Golf as I drive around Calgary. It's stunning how many puzzled
people will wave back. I expect that with the collapse of Bre-X shares
there might be fewer to wave at. I'm trying to train our two Border Collies

I also did that promotion-drove up in my 1966 Series IIA 88" and they all
looked at it. Then I took a drive in the Pathfinder, got them to sign the

post office to collect it. PA Blanchard claims parcel post loses
shipments on a regular basis, but I haven't had a problem.

Fed Ex: Always have to pay duty plus a $10 or so brokerage fee, which is
billed after the delivery. Delivered to the door, but some one has to
sign for or you have to leave a note. Shipping is more than parcel post
but quicker.

Checked luggage: I have checked a SII rear exhaust pipe and other large
but not too heavy items which were well wrapped. So far there hasn't
been an overweight charge even though we've exceeded the limits. We've
kept the number of items within the allowance. However, I've heard that
the overweight charge is still a lot cheaper than alternative air
freight arrangements. Has anyone tried checking a gearbox or axle yet?

David Cockey

For those who got free binoculars from Nissan,

Out of curiosity, what kind were they? were they good quality ?

I got the promotion in the mail but was too lazy to go down to the
dealership.

Bert,
I don't know much about the series I's, but my series II needed to
have the steering relay topped up occasionally.

     Hi all

Did anyone else see the program Travel Xpress on NBC Europe on Easter
Sunday? They had a great item on Skibo Castle in Scotland which
included the Land Rover Offroad Academy and driving around the Scotish
moorlands in a red D90 and blue Disco TDi. It looked pretty wet and
grey - reminded me of home! :-)

Hi fellow Land Rover Owners

As you may remember I had a dud Discovery TDi ES Auto.

Well Land Rover S.A. replaced it for me with the V8i ES Auto (Oxford
blue Grey Leather)

The '97 Dicoverey is a totally different vehicle to the '96 version.

The differences are as follows:

1. The build quality and finish is superb up 100%
2. The wind noise from the doors is down 100%
3. The suspension is softer but just as capable off road.
4. No more manual aerial it is now fitted in the rear quarter window.
5. Front seats have bun warmers.
6. Front windscreen has a demister fitted (very fine wires).
8. The Disco is quiet very quiet!
9. The Radio and CD Changer works superbly, no jumps even in tough
    off road conditions.
10. Everything but everything works!!, totaly fault free.

It has POWER lots of POWER and Oh! that lovely burble of the V8.

Cheers

Stan
