Date: Mon, 24 Mar 1997 21:40:11 -0800 From: "Con P. Seitl" <seitl@ns.sympatico.ca> Subject: 2.25 ltr Engine Head Well, I've got the head into the remans yesterday. Having it redone with Stelite exhaust valves, guides and hardened seats. The head Part # is 568750, same as on my oldest fellows 1971. The one on my own 1973 (Pig) is not. Under all the grease it looks like a lettered and numbered combination. Both parts manuals for Series IIa and Series III don't refer to either. All the other heads I have left have the aforementioned head #. Tell me I'm having the correct head redone!? From: John.Cross@pscmail.ps.net Date: Tue, 25 Mar 1997 9:47:00 -0600 Subject: Perkins Diesel (4 cyl) Conversions I have a friend recently bitten by the bug. He just purchased a 1969 88" diesel SW which has had a Perkins 4cyl diesel conversion put in. He would like to find any literature available on the engine and the conversion process itself. Any suggestions? Thanks, John ------------------------------[ <- Message 3 -> end | Table of Contents | <- Digest 970326 -> Archive Index | <- Browser -> ]

Satuaday's UK Daily Telegraph carried the first official LR picture of the CB40 which is to be launched officially at the Frankfurt Show in September and will be available in Europe early 1998. Its permanent 4WD and will be in 3-door and 5-door format with 1.8litre petrol or 2.0litre diesel engines. a 2.5litre V6 variant will be available on US market 18 months after Euro launch. The 3-door has a forwrd folding "softback" roof and targa top, hardtop option available. The car, which looks like a Toymoter RAV4, is `aimed at the young at heart so Lr has given it the unbelievably boring name of ' Freelander'. Personally I think the name is a marketing disaster, Disco Baby would sell it, however... The Torygraph says that "The starnge name was the result of market reseach in Land Rover's target markets around the world, particularly Germany." Price range 15,000--20,000 Quids of the Realm. Kensington hair stylists will love it. I have just joined the list but unfortunately am selling my much loved D90. My University graduation is approaching and I am returning to Canada. I am located in San Diego. The Rover is a white #214 D90 soft top with the glass fiber top in place (soft top and Bimini top included) and just under 60 000 miles. It has some small off-road dents but is mechanically perfect with a new clutch and service done. The Rover is completely off-road equipped with a custom roof-rack with jack mount and second spare tire mount, wooden storage boxes on the wheel arches, mud/terrain tires with roughly 15 000 miles and are as knew, rock sliders, ARB bull bar with Hella 3000's and Warn 9000 pound winch, tranny/transfer case cover, Uniden CB, factory A/C, Mantec snorkel and raised axle/tranny/transfer case breathers. The 90 has been dealer maintained here in San Diego using Amsoil synthetic fluids. I am asking $22 500.00 for the Land Rover D90 ... Knowledge of the restrictor plates is an especially useful bit of information. I didn't know there was a part on my Landie that I could unbolt and throw away with a clear conscience. From: "Alan Logue" <logue@a011.aone.net.au> Subject: Pen Pal Virus Date: Wed, 26 Mar 1997 11:19:48 +0930 I've just listened to a discussion on our national radio station (Aust ABC) about the "Pen Pal Virus". It went along the lines that if you got an E Mail with a subject something like "PEN PALS WANTED" and then you downloaded it and openned the file, the you would infect your hard drive. To be fair, the guy being interviwed had not actually had it happen to him, and could not comment from a personal basis. A caller then rang in and said that you could only get a virus from an exe file, and e mail was not made up of exe files. I am curious to know if this is a real virus, or a hoax virus that breeds on people like me not knowing what to believe!!! Any comments? From: "Brian Willoughby" <lndrvr@ldd.net> Subject: Reverting to a generator Date: Tue, 25 Mar 1997 20:28:07 -0600 Does anyone out there have any advice they would like to share concerning the retro-fitting of my 1960 Series II with the generator it was originally outfitted with? It has an "Autocraft" alternator at the moment which Lord Lucas has already expressed his displeasure with once last summer: it burned up. Since the previous owner hacked up the original wiring, there was little recourse other than to go ahead and replace it with another identical unit for the time being. I now have a new positive earth loom which is already set-up for the generator. I've also been told that all electrical devices operate much better in positive earth on old LRs such as mine. I don't care about a radio/stereo system, a cellular phone or other "modern" electrical conviences. So what is the word? Appreciate the advice; thanks in advance. Subject: Tailgate Treadplates Date: Tue, 25 Mar 97 20:41:01 -0600 From: "Keith W. Cooper" <kwcooper@aristotle.net> I'm looking for a set (4) of "Treadplates" for the tailgate on my 1965 Series IIA. They are listed as part number 304874 in my original parts manual. These are the 1 inch wide metal strips that run across the inside of the tailgate. For some reason a few of these are missing and I would like to replace them. I would even be interested in some used ones in decent condition from someone's parts rover. They are riveted on with the old style hammer rivets. Let me know if you've got some around. Thanks, Keith Keith W.
