Subject: what is she ?

Hi Y'all,

Im a green horn Series III LR owner with a few "gee wiz" questions. My
82' LWB is an ex-military vehicle that I would like to know a little more
about. Firstly, she is equipped with HF, VHF and UHF comm radio hook-
ups; along with large antenna mounts located on both front fenders (wings).
She also has (for lack of a better word)" black-out lights" at the front and rear
that I guess are used for sneaking around at night. Her electrical system is
24 volts energized by a huge alternator mounted to a 3.5 liter V-8. She is a
three door painted tan. Does anyone know what this particular version LR
was used for in the military ? were they fairly common ?

Secondly, the drive train seams to be "full-time" four wheel drive with a
locking "centre" differential in the transfer box. Correct me if I'm wrong, but
I think that means that she is driving one out of four wheels at any one time;
unless the center diff is locked, in which case she would drive one front and
one rear wheel. Is this a true assessment of how her drive train works ? does
that mean I cannot install free-wheeling hubs on the front axle for better gas
mileage ? and lastly, what are the benefits to this type of drive train ?

Cheers,

Reggie

Dear all, I have superficially investigated the 4wd rental situation in
Botswana, Namibia, SA, and Zimbabwe for our Botswana vacation. I even found
some companies that rent Landrovers! If anybody is interested in a summary
with fax and telephone numbers, please email me directly.

It's a military version of a "Stage I", built between '79 and '83. The
engine was a low power version of the V8 fitted with restrictor plates
in the manifold. The gearboxes are from the contemporary RR with full
time 4WD, and the axles have 3.54 ratios. Chassis, suspension and brakes
are developed from the SIII. A new hood and grille panel are fitted to
move the radiator forward. No idea how many military versions were
built, but civilan versions are not rare in Britain.

Not quite right. A conventional open differential splits torque
(twisting force) evenly to the two outputs. So at an axle both wheels
have the same torque applied and drive equally. This means if one wheel
is on ice and spinning , the torque to the non-spinning wheel will be
the same as the torque to the spinning wheel, which may not be
sufficient to move the vehicle. Hence the impression that only one wheel
is driving. The same thing happens between the front and rear axles with
an open differential between them. Thus when one wheel loses traction,
the torque at the other three wheels will be the same as the spinning
wheel. All 4 wheels are driving equally, but are limited by the traction
at the spinning wheel.

When the center diff is locked, then the front and rear prop shafts are
locked together, and the torque split between them will be what ever is
required for the shafts to turn at the same speed. Then, with open axle
diffs, one wheel on each axle can spin. Hence the impression that only
two wheels are driving. This is the same as a Series LR in 4wd.

Regards,
David Cockey

engine, but will have a 2.6litre V6 for US market 18 months later (it sez

From: lenny@fof.coracle.com (Lenny Warren)

Hi there all,

I've had my Landie about a week now, so I've got a few things you might
be able to help with???? What a bunch of great guys!!!! :-)

I have 6.00 x 16 Avon Traction Mileage tyres, on SWB rims. What pressure
should they be at?????

If I wanted to change to radials with a road bias, would I be better
getting LWB rims, or just road tyres to fit these rims??? (All the tyres
are good, and I canna afford to change them now!)

I have indicator bulbs in the dash, however when I start to indicate, a
yellow lights glows momentarily, then goes out. It's in the small centre
console type bit! Any ideas why????

Also in the centre console bit, there is a blue rectangular light. There
is a sticker above it which is only partially legible, something like
"....rake". I presume brake, but it never lights. Any ideas?????

I took it off-road tonight for the first time!!! :-)))) On a slight
hill, muddy path, 1st low, it jumped out of gear a couple of times. I
put it into 2nd low and it was fine. I tried to get it to jump out of
1st low a bit further along the track, but it held fine!! ???????

Sorry about all these questions, but it's my first Landie!!

TIA....

Catch you later,
Lenny... 65/3

Nero? Latin and Greek letters have numerical values, as do arabic, which we,
of course, use ten of, for all our math. Grafitti has been found in places
like Pompeii that read in part, "...loves her whose number is..." Nero's
number in Greek is six hundred and sixty six. In Latin, it's six hundred and
sixteen. Some translations of John's Revelation used *that* number instead of
666. Some scholars believe John was writing of the fall of Jerusalem and
destruction of the temple in 70AD, not the interpretations of Scofield or Hal
Lindsey, who bought many acres of this late great planet, with money he made
off his books.
Ooh! LR content: The absence of LRs in Josephus' commentaries must lead me to
believe the Romans armies used something else; camels? elephants? Thery
didn't need LRs, they built *great* roads!

Dear friends of Land Rover,

In Italy, too, every motor vehicle is referred to as feminine. Hence Una

small size and familiar boxy shape is lovingly called "Una Piccola Range Rover."

The starter died. The relay would click, but the starter was dead as a
Dalek. We discovered that the aftermarket positive line from the relay to
the starter was delivering only nine volts. Bingo, sez me! Replaced the
skinny little aftermarket cable with a one-gauge ("six-volt") line, and
twelve volts came from the relay. After much cussing, got the starter again
wired up, and still nothing happened.

Removed the starter and opened up the back end. It was packed with a
granular grey dust that might have been the brushes. The starter was
opened and cleaned last year, when the post at the back came loose. The
local electrical shop reset the terminal post and must have cleaned it up.
The brushes appear to be much older than a year old. So what happened? Why
would the brushes disintegrate so quickly? Should I just replace the
brushes and continue as if nothing had happened?

Hi Nick,

May I recommend a book entitled The Land-Rover, 1948-1988 by
James Taylor to answer your questions about the "series" land rovers.
I have never really been into Discoveries, so I don't have any information
on them.
According to Taylor, Series I began in July 1948, Series II April
1958 to
September, 1961, Series IIa September 1961 to September 1971, Series III,
September
1971 to March 1983 (?). The 110 and 90 were introduced, according to Taylor
in March 1983 and ran until 1979 (?). Hope this helps. Think I have seen
other written materials with different dates. Don't know exactly which is
correct, but Taylor seems pretty complete.

Subject: Engine Problems and cure!

I have had problems with my landy recently, which I have finally managed
to cure and thought that I would pass on details so that no one else has
the same hassle that I had.

The problem was bad running, It always lacked power, but it started
getting worse and worse, I tried all the usual things, new plugs points
etc. which improved things slightly but it slowly went worse,
backfireing lumpy jerky driving till finally it would tick over nice and
smooth but if I tried to drive I would get to the end of the road and
have to turn back.

After having 3 friends look at it and scratch thier heads I decided to
call out the Home-Tune man. He asked what the problem was checked fuel,
compression and then pulled the points out and told me the problems.

PROBLEM: points and condenser burning out,
SYMPTOMS: bad running, leading to backfiring, misfiring and blowing back
through the carb in extreme cases.
LOOK FOR: Blue face on points, white deposits round edge of points face,
pitting of face.
CAUSE: you have got 12v going accross the points, this is not good
for the life of the points.
SOLUTION: Get hold of a ballast resistor and connect it up to the coil
feed, plus new points and condenser cos the old ones are probably dead
now.

The guy also advised on fitting a cold start solonoid to replace my
standard starter solonoid, this puts 12v accross the coil for starting
only to produce a bigger spark to aid starting, and after starting you
go back to the ballasted feed.

So after following the mans advice I fitted this new kit and it started
first turn of the key and now runs smooth as silk (or as smooth as a
landy will run :-) ) and I now seem to have the power that was always
missing.

I hope this advice proves usful to anyone.

the messages that I was already subscribed.
Ah Ha I thought, all is fixed - now I'll only get 3 large digests each day
or so, and things will be fine.
NOT SO!
The messages went dead. No realtime (as I expected), but also no digests
for 3 days or so. I've now resubscribed to the real time lists again, but
would really appreciate someone letting me know what gives.
TIA

Subject: 1959 88" Series 2 newbie

Today I brought the one and Australian army series 2 SWB I have ever
seen. It was a Mil veh auction at our local museum. "143901054" was in
storage since 1985. I have set it free and it is out on the lawn
enjoying fresh air (mostly thru the chassis). So here I am on Sunday
night the proud owner of a bucket of bolts from Warwickshire circa 1959:
"TRUCK COMMAND RECONNAISSANCE 1/4 TON LAND ROVER SERIES 2". A photo will
be up later in the week...
