Post on the list or email me UK number plates don't expire, unlike American ones. They stay with the vehicle over its entire life. However, any motoring goods store can print number plates for you, and generally charge between UK#10-15 for a set. You should have a white plate on the front, yellow on the back, and the proper format for the plate is: LLL NNNY Where: LLL = any three letters NNN = any three numbers Y = letter corresponding to first year of registration If you'd like, you can send me the registration number you'd like and I'll get a set of plates made up and shipped to you. I did not switch the engine off though (so i don't know what it would have done). But while idling (at the side of the highway) it started sounding normal again. I could keep it that way by slowly driving in 2nd gear. Not that I'm a diesel guru like some here, but this was my little experience. Replaced the faulty injector and all was well. A couple of things you should investigate before you try this. I was given a factory tour at Solihull back in 1992 by a friend of mine who was in Land Rover management at the time. I inquired about the possibility of retrofitting a tdi into an older Land Rover like a Ninety or a Series III. He said it was an easy conversion, and the engine would cost about 5,000 UK pounds. This was for a brand new one, of course, straight off the engine assembly line. Assuming the price hasn't changed at all but using today's exchange rate, that would put the cost of a new tdi engine in the neighborhood of US$ 8,000. Obviously, secondhand or rebuilt tdi engines are much cheaper. But you can run a lot of gas through the V-8 for $8,000. The other thing to consider is if you can get your vehicle registered in your state after you bring it back from the UK with a tdi engine in it. If you do not have emissions test (like we do in Seattle) and so don't have to submit emissions reports with your annual registration form, then you might be able to get away with it as your motor vehicle department will simply assume you still have the V-8 that came with your vehicle. However, if you do have emissions tests, you could conceivably run into trouble when you try to obtain the proper form to submit along with your registration payment. Swapping engines to a non-US-approved configuration could also create problems if you want to sell your vehicle in the future. Just some things to think about. However, having rented and driven numerous Discoveries in the UK with the tdi (nobody over there is fool enough to get one with the V-8) I can certainly sympathize with your desire to put one in your Discovery. It's an excellent engine and does phenomenal things for your mileage at speeds under 55 mph while still giving the vehicle surprisingly good performance. _________________________ C. Then again, > we're dealing with Auntie Rover with their legendary upper management.... It's not quite that simple. Vehicles are "EPA-approved", powertrains are not. A manufactuer can use the certification for one vehicle to cover another if the engine and transmission are identical, axle ratio is the same, drive config same (2wd/4wd), and the vehicle mass is close. In other cases an engine which meets EPA requirements in one application will sometimes meet them in another, but frequently a fair amount of development is needed. Could someone tell me how to interpret it? It looks like Bill and Adrian have all-round better oil pressure than Jack and me. What's more is that theirs seems to be higher when the engine is hot while ours (Jack & me) seems to be lower when the engine is hot (compared to when it's cold). I overhauled my engine 4000kms ago but did not do anything with the oil pump...it seems that I would have to do it now anyway. The question is: how many more kilometres can I drive with it as is before I overhaul the oil pump? ...and is my assumption correct that after such an overhaul I would have higher pressure? ...or should I just shutup and drive? Here is a summary (psi): idling cold cruising idling hot Bill 45 55-60 55 Adrian (109) 50 65-70 60 (88) 45 60-65 55 Jack 30-35 50 (hot) 15-20 Me 40-45 45 15 - Iwan Vosloo ( '75 SIII 88" Diesel ) ------------------------------[ <- Message 25 -> end | Table of Contents | <- Digest 970303 -> Archive Index | <- Browser -> ]

Jack & my oil pressures behaved more or less the same and was lower than the others. But I just remembered that Jack has a mechanical guage. I have one too. Could this have something to do with the different 'classes' of measurements we get? Dave, that is an absolutely HUGE battery. I work in telecoms and we use big batteries for standby power. Each cell (2 volt) is as big as a garbage bin but they are 2400AH each. Now multiply that by 6 (for 12 volts) and divide by 3 (2400/3 = 800AH) and you can still see that the battery would be big enough to take up the whole rear compartment of a SWB pickup. I'll stick with a smaller battery 8-}} Best Regards, Ron Beckett Editor Hillman Owners Club Of Australia Newsletter "Hillmanews" Emu Plains, Australia '87 Range Rover 4.8L auto '67 Hillman Gazelle '71 Hillman Hunter Royal 660 - for pictures see http://www.brigadoon.com/~craigb/hillman/hunter.html ------------------------------[ <- Message 27 -> end | Table of Contents | <- Digest 970303 -> Archive Index | <- Browser -> ]

Speedograph Richfield Rolleston Drive Arnold Nottingham NG5 7JR Tel: +44 1159 26-4235 Fax: +44 1159 20-9912 email.fd37@dial.pipex.com (Note they have a full stop (a period) between the word email and fd37. This may be OK, it may not. I haven't tested it.) They advertise that they rebuild Smiths instruments; manufacture control cables, brake cables,Clutch cables, speedo and tachyo cables. Another advert was for: Joe Shaw & Sons 6 Marion Close Robin Hood Lane Chatham, Kent ME5 9QA Tel: +44 1634 86-1552 Fax: +44 1634 86-8308 They say they do speedo repairs, recalibrations and rebuilds. Rabbits are being wiped out (hopefully) by the new virus that has been released. Feral pigs, water buffalo etc are a problem. Some people go for ducks. Me? I have absolutely no interest in guns and applaud the Federal government for their tough stand on guns and the current disarming of the public. >Not sure if you need a licence. Anyone in Oz know? Owing to the new laws on guns, I don't think it's easy to get a licence. As you are probably aware, after the Port Arthur massacre the Aussie guns laws were toughened up and there has been a massive, and I mean *massive* buy back and destruction of guns i.e., rifles and shotguns. Pistols are very hard to buy and even harder to get a licence for (no licence - no sale). Rust isn't too big a problem in most areas providing you occasionally give'em a wash!.. Beach use is the worst because of the salt. Except for T*y*tas. They rust out badly around the roof line due to condensation. FJ55s were notorious for this and I've seen 60 and 80 series Tojos also rusting out there. After all,the oil *is* thinner when hot. However, could the answer lie in the oil used? Don't laugh this does happen, my wifes father had this happen only two weeks ago - he owns a specialist sports car that was based on a classic V12 Jaguar (approx 150mph) with a personalised plate. BUT some wiseguy in Holland had a similar car and thought it would look goods with UK plates - only he chose a plate that was similar to my father-in-law's and you can guess which one gets busted! ------------------------------[ <- Message 34 -> end | Table of Contents | <- Digest 970303 -> Archive Index | <- Browser -> ]

How long did it take to down load Keiths message? 1 second, 10 seconds, 30 seconds? It was less than 1000 characters long. Some signature files of pix of Landies etc are nearly as long. I usually call in from home to my company's mail server to get this mail. For me that is a trunk call. Not a cheap or, in some countries, free local call. It doesn't worry me about these entries. I live 10,000 miles away so I am certainly not going to go for a spin in them (I'd like to). Unlike Australia, Defenders are somewhat thinner on the ground in the USA so if one becomes available there just may be a buyer on the list who is looking. Keep 'em coming, Keith.
