Aeroengine in an LR?

Gak!

Aeroengines are designed to sit there and run at full power all day - they
develop diddly for power at low RPMs.

Not a good idea for something designed to mud-slog, I would think...

Yes, it could be done, but a Lycoming or some equivalent air-cooled little
jobbie would be quite unhappy in an LR's engine bay - no airflow.

I do remember seeing VW air-cooled engines adapted to run in small
airplanes, though. You'd remove the distributor and drop in a magneto, and
the engine was started by hand-propping. Not unlike a landy, after
all......8*)

Hi Dave,

Major problem: The babysitter called last night, she got a date for Sat and
asked to cancel. I'm looking for an emergency backup now (I'm also trying to
warm my wife up to the idea that our 5 year old daughter would *love* to go
to the meeting).

Many thanks to all who responded; there were no wiseguy responses and
common sense seems to have prevailed (unanimously) on the lists. It
now remains to be seen if similar intelligence, common sense, and
literacy exists in a certain Federal regulatory agency and the
associated for-profit special interests who helped foist a new law

Hello,

I'd like to add that if you live in California, and you import a
vehicle, you'd better be prepared to bring it up to California smog
standards, even if the vehicle is more than 25 years old, and even
if it meets the EPA and DOT standards.

Alta will list all pages with the word 'lovedu' in the link. The GNN

Subject: 109 2.25 Diesel disaster

Ahhh! My SIII 109 diesel daily driver has just felt it's age.
Happily pottering along at 50mph, the engine note changes, the rear-view
mirror fills with smoke and when I pull over and shut off the engine, she
keeps running for about 10 secs.
When after a quick prayer, I start her again all seems well. She runs fine for
about 2 miles then the same again. It took 6 miles to limp home. Hopefully I
didn't do too much damage!

Clearly oil is getting into the combustion chamber causing the smoke and the
self-sustaining engine. I suspect either a catastrophic piston ring failure or
as she has not burnt oil in the past, something more drastic in the cracked
piston league.

I intend pulling off the head this weekend to inspect the damage, and have
some questions that the more mechanically experienced may be able to help
with.

Firstly, does anyone recognize the symptoms and can you give a better
diagnosis? Sadly I don't have access to a compression tester suitable for a
diesel engine.

Secondly, if I replace the pistons, can I just replace the skirt or will I
have to replace the gudgeon pins, bearings etc.?

Finally, will I be able to do this with the engine in place, or am I likely to
have to have the bores honed? I hope not, I have my first child on the way and
need all the cash I can get.

Many thanks in advance.

Subject: Re: 109 2.25 Diesel disaster

A sudden and dramatic change in engine performance like this may be the
result of an intake valve letting go. This would allow a free flow of
lubricating oil into the combustion chamber which would explain it
running on.
Since you were able to drive it, it seems that the valve may have broken
in a way that keeps it from falling into the combustion chamber, indeed
it must still be functioning somewhat as it provides enough compression
on the upstroke to keep running. I think the damage is going to be
minimal and that you'll simply need a new valve and guide. You should be
able to do this yourself, or for small outlay to a local repair shop.
In the event that the piston top is trashed (hotspots can form on
scratched metal, causing false ignition) it can be replaced with the
engine in the truck. Pull off the sump and remove the connecting rod cap
and push the offending piston up through it's bore. Hire a ring
compressor. Replacement is simply a reversal, but be sure the rod is
oriented properly.
It's going to be a long weekend.

True now but State Senator Kopp has sponsored a bill which would change that
so that all vehicles more than 25 model years old would be exempt from smog
requirements, bringing California into line with the federal laws. Let's
hope that one passes!

Hi All.
Well I just thought I would write and tell you about the latest on my
Landy. In the last month she has been treated to a new clutch rear half
shafts front prop shaft and a new silencer box.I get the feeling that the
3.0L Ford V6 that lurkes under her bonnet could have been the reason for
the demise of the drive train parts :).
Sadly I have had to put her up for sale. This is not any fault of
hers but after having one of my knee caps removed (caused by my old job) I
find it painful to drive her any distance due to the pressure required to
apply the brakes and also banging the said knee on the steering column.I am
6' 2" tall and there ain't any more room to move the seat back well not
without cuting the bulkhead out :).
Don't dispare though. When my compesation claim finaly comes through there
will be a nice Defender sat on the drive.
Two reasons for this one the brakes don't need as much pressure and
secondly I have one of the new storm engines on the way.Storm I hear you
ask.Yep there is a new Land Rover diesel engine under develpment. It is a 5
cyl TDI which gives the same BHP and more torque than the petrol V8 fitted
now.Oh yes plus it will be cheaper than running on petrol.
I have one comment to make.I have noticed a thread about how Land Rover
dosen't seem to care about the US market!!!!
I can't agree.I whish we could get US spec Defenders here in the UK The
standard spec is far higher than those built for the home market.
Well I will finish now and wait for all the "smart" replies
our postings normaly get.

What sort of conversion are you thinking of Neal?. I converted my Lightweight
using a shortened Range-Rover chassis and RR axles, but the end result I call

Hi Geoffrey!

My 109" had the same problem three months ago - a curious and sudden
scent of diesel in the cab - open the bonnet and voila! a complete
diesel-bidet - spraying fuel out of an apparant hole in the casting of
the pump.

Stop car - clean pump body, and you can see that it could be a leaky
gasket on the small box which faces the air-filter - with the speed
control and stop valves on the side.

The pump has to be removed (it's easier this way) - before removing
distributor pump - check that the timing datum is lined up with the fine
line which is stamped on the flange (the datum is a metal pointer which
is fixed to the motor block - if it's correctly lined up, you can easily
refit the dist--pump without re-timing.)

Remove the valve arms from the box-cover. Be careful not to adjust the
tick-over and max-revs screws (tick-over 750 rpm, max rpm 4250 for the 4
cylinder 2,25 diesel Series III).

The gasket is easy to change, and is cheap - clean up, reassemble, and
good luck.

It's really simple if your problem is as described above - this is only
on the low pressure side of the dist-pump. you can dismantle the top of
the pump to clean it, but avoid dismantling the high pressure side - the
main body of the "bottle" - this I am told should only be done by
workshops who have the correct tools with which to calibrate the pump.

Very important - keep everything very clean while you are working - no
muck in the pump!

Before starting just bleed the high and low pressure sides using the
manual arm on the fuel pump.

Good luck - hope this helps!

There is a beautiful brand new Red '97 D90 Station Wagon sitting on our
local Land Rover dealer's lot. Just for kicks, I took it for a spin
today, NICE vehicle.

A local millionare is considering buying it for his punk 16 year old (no
final deal has been made, he is apparently deciding between this and one
of those big Lexus LX's) and so I thought I would advertise it to you
all, and give someone out there the word, so that it may go to a nicer

dealer.

Let me know if you are interested and I'll put you in contact with the

Just helping the cause!

I had these on my BMW -incredible light. Four head lights, 100/65 for hi-lo
and 130's(140's? don't recall) for the other two highs. Definitely want
these on my 109.

Hhhm, maybe I should go with four headlights on the LR...

Tony,

Alas, the 110 Tdi is not available in USA, so I don't even know how to
compare costs.

Furthermore, Land Rover of North America, in it's latest brochure, informs
us that the Defender 90 is in it's last year of import in the US.

Thanks for the info on hunting. My father spent sone time in your fair
country during WWII and he is still nostalgic of it's beauty. He speaks well
of the friendliness of the people, and the beauty of landscape. I hope it
hasn't changed in 50 some years. Before I die, I intend to visit. My dream
is to traverse a great sheep station in, what else, a Land Rover.

God bless,
Frank

Hey,

Almost 30 years ago I was a 16 year old "punk" kid. My dad (not a millionare
then or now) bought me a SIIa. My friends drove muscle cars. But guess who
got the most attention from peers and chicks et al.

Today, I'm a 45 year-old Land Rover "nut" and I grew up without all the
adolescent nonsense.

Give the punk a chance.

What I was thinking of doing was going for the full conversion that East
Coast Rovers offers. New frame, new axles, disc brakes all around and coil
springs. This truck is one that I got this summer from the orig. owner ( a
neighbor of mine ) and it has a grand total of 7460 miles on it. So, mech.
it's like new, but the frame is full of holes and the springs are shot. I
have three other LRs and I could make good use of the parts that came off.
It wouldn't be origional, But.

Can anyone who lives in London England look up a phone number and
address of a pub at about #1 Walmer Rd. in Shephard's Bush and the same
for the Dell Boxing Club which is at about #4 Walmer Rd. I haven't been
able to get them from information or on the WWW. Both are almost next

I'm doing some idle speculation.

Has anyone had experience temporaly exporting a car from the US to the UK?

I assume you need a carnet. I was toying with the idea of having The Green
Rover at the '98 Billing meet. It would be more fun to bring in a car with
California plates than camping at a car met without a car.

I get the impression that shipping costs would not be too bad. Anyone did it?

Any one know of a set of stainless steel headers for a Range Rover.
Are they legal in California? Many of the new cars are available now

Well, you can. Just buy a used Series III-88 and fix whatever needs
fixing. Even if you have to do a fair amount of work on it, it will still
cost you a lot less than any of the current US-spec Land Rover products.

Before performing any major surgery on your 109 check fuel system. I
have had simaliar symptoms with my MB 240 diesel. I checked everything I
could think of and took it the dealer with the same result. Then one
morning it wouldn't fire at all; it cranked fine and glow plugs glowed
but no combustion. The pump primer was very hard to push. I had algae
throughout the system, the inline filter was completely clogged as was
the pickup in the fuel tank. Apparently it also effected the injector
pump's timing causing the loss of power and spewing of sooty smoke, and
can also account for your shutdown delay.

I'd start with a complete cleaning of the entire fuel system saving the
tank for last. Skip the tank if you don't find any problem elsewhere.
If that isn't your problem you can still go to surgery but with I nice
clean fuel system. It's cheap and easy, only takes time.

Hope this helps.
