Subject: Ignition Key/Pedals/Fuel Filler

I appreciate all past help in deciding on the 109 IIA for sale locally.
I passed at $3kUS. A friend of mine bought it at $1800US. I will
look for a better 109 deal in Maine this summer.

He is not online and has asked me to list a few questions. The ignition
key switch is stamped "FS 924". The key appears to be a steel duplicate,
"Curtis UN-18" blank. Was the original steel or brass? My friend
seeks a quality replacement just like the original. Ideas? He is as
bothered about the pedals as I was. I guess he has a set of rubber
pedal pads that he is proud of and is unanble to clip on. Does
someone have a set of pedals to sell? Just the pedals are needed, the
arms can be bent, the bushings wobbled. How about a fuel filler neck
with extension tube and cap. I quess this panel has been smacked at
one time, the area looks distorted and the rag cap is tacky. Please
email me directly with details. All help appreciated. Mark

Umm, the brushes are held in place by a spring which is easily lifted and
moved to the side so that one may reinstall the armature. I don't think
you need to have the armature out to replace the pinion spring.
I may be all wet, but is the spring held in place with a circlip?
Of course my Diesel starter drive is different, but a bendix is a bendix.

Got this here Ramsey winch from Dr Renken. It's a 8K mechanical (PTO)
drive type.
I am in a conundrum as to whether to try and figure out a hydraulic drive
system or a mechanical one.
Hydraulic drive will allow greater operational flexibility, while being
the more expensive option in terms of finding parts and hooking things
up.
The best solution is an electric clutch operated pump driving a hydraulic
motor. This way, the pump is on only when needed and the winch can be
reversed. New parts are around $600. Too expensive. Scrounging is an
alternative.

Mechanical drive would work, but the winch can only be operated in one
direction. I would need maybe a front pto drive and a gear reducer ( like
a 5:1 or so) Parts for this are readily available from most firms that
handle power transmission. Less expensive, but far less practical.

your thoughts welcome.

Bill,

Get a catalog from Northern Hydraulics. You can ask for one via their web
site or by phone. The have a lot of pumps, hyd motors, switches, valves etc.

Or if you don't want to hassle with it, you can sell your winch and get a
hydraulic 8000# from MileMarker for about $600 US. You'll need to get a PS
pump for it from a bone yard though.

I've never used one but the people I've talked too that have them, like
them. Only real complaint was that they are slow.

Hi there,

I (still) haven't got a Rover so I have no right to speak, but be advised
I've reserved a name for it when it comes: Mrs. Thatcher. This for three
obvious similarities between these two creatures:

1. both are british
2. the sort they belong to is often referred to as female
3. a good deal of 'em is made of iron

Of course, someone could have thought of this before. Perhaps he/she
would like to sell his/her rover?

Dear Ben,
I completely understand your anger. I want to make things right, as
we made a mistake in adjusting your brakes. I will not dispute any of your
claims even though things like the brake booster was bought new from DAP in
VT. I will take it up with them if it is not a new unit.
What it comes down to is a warranty problem. I will completely
stand behind the work we did, and the work you wanted done. Our warranty
work is, and has to be handled by us. Mark has put time into the truck on
Sunday, and I will pay him for his time on that day. At this time I need to
arrange to get the truck shipped up here as soon as possible, to make all
the needed corrections, and then return it to you either in FL, or CT, your
choice.
I sincerely apologize for the mistakes, but we are the ones that
are bound by law to make things right, and that is what I intend to do, to
your complete satisfaction.

I like it - "The Aluminium Lady" - Maggie is an appropriate name for a

Probably lithium grease or some equivalent. Heavy truck supply shops sell
this stuff in specially labeled tubes specifically for this purpose, but
stock lithium grease works as well and doesn't tend to run when it gets
very hot.

for this stuff in the US other than Rovers North or BP? I have seen some
ludicrous prices for 2 pieces in RN catalogs. there must be a pile of it
somewhere 'cause the military had a bunch of it made for Vietnam."

Mark, I think that pile is actually IN Vietnam. Anyway, I take it you're
trying to locate the aluminum version of "Marsden Mat" (spelling?), the
stuff invented during WWII, and used for airfields, etc. BTW, I recall
seeing some of the steel stuff lying on the side of the road in the back
side of Ft Benning a couple of years ago, but it was all rusty and bent. I
assume you want the shiny, clean aluminum stuff to hang off your roof rack
as you traverse the wilds of Cobb County. (just kidding).

You might try contacting some of the boys who are into Military Vehicles.
I've seen some amazing stuff restored by these fanatics. They seem to be
able to source about anything. I came across a pretty good web site on the
subject once. I seem to remember it might of contained a list of supply
places (Besides Naval Supply Center Danang). Consult your browser.

the list for about a year lurking and collecting what I thought would be
valuable information until I bought my rover.
Having bought it I have "?'s" that I did not see adressed in earlier list's.

I would promise to keep away from sensitive subjects but with the deep
devotions many owners have to their particular rover I don't think this is
possible. Anyways thanks for the advice.

How about installing a PTO on the rear of the transmission (if you don't
have an overdrive) and a drive-shaft going to the winch? Don't know if it
would be possible but I have seen some Koenigs set up this way.

Just a french-canadian thought.

In North Salt Lake City is a place called Smith and Edwards, who have acres
of surplus stuff. Unfortunately, much of it has been exposed to the weather
for too long to be of much use, but aluminum doesn't rust, so it might still
be salvagable. 15 years ago they wanted $50 per piece, which I thought was
too much for used stuff. Their pile then had been well picked-through, but
they still had several hundred bent pieces left. They were quite heavy and
about 6-feet long by not quite 2 feet wide, as I recall. Some pieces had
additional holes, not made by conventional machining techniques ;)

I have seen something advertised in LROI on series power steering
conversions, but the best I have seen in practise was the use of a 90 box and
column. This involved cutting out the front chassis crossmember and welding
in a new one further forward.
The 90 box replaces both steering box and relay on the ser ii .

Subject: Door tops SIII

Door and window panels, because of their combined alu/steel
construction, seem to be amongst the worst components of a series III
for corrosion.

I have recently rebuilt three back doors (and the recipe is much the
same for the side doors) - strip all alu cladding, clean steel frame
with wire brush (cup on a grinder works well) - weld any patches/new
rails as required, and then rebuild - first painting all parts with rust
paint - 2 or three coats, then coating all steel faces which mate with
the alu. with silicon mastic, finally refitting the aluminium panels (or
new panels in 1mm alu sheet - it's easy to cut) - fold the edges and
it's all ready for several coats of (in my case) light green series
paint.

Today I received 2 new door tops, without glass, but with alu cladding
already fitted (really cheap about £16 apiece - thanks Søren!). But I
was surprised that they were just assembled in raw steel/alu and then
painted afterwards, so that here was a rust/corrosion bomb ticking away.

Following my recent door experiences, i couldn't resist stripping these
new door top frames and repeating the recipe here - it's easy when
they're new and without corrosion.

So now they're drying in the workshop, the whole place stinks of Xylene
thinners, (and there is green paint on my fingers, computer keyboard...)

But I think it's worth the effort, these won't corrode for years now.

:-)

Personally I have two chunks of PSP (Perforated Steel Plate) which
I bought at a scrap yard for ~$10 each. (whatever the rate of scrap iron is).
They are about twice as heavy as the aluminum ones, but much less then the
many hundreds of dollars that RN charges. Every few months the base I
used to work at (Naval Air Weapons Center, Weapons Division, China Lake)
would sell lots of 10 or so 16 foot lengths of PSP at auction. These lots
usually sold for $100 each. That's what, $5 per section. It doesn't take long
to saw them in half with a hack saw.

OK, here's another Series 1 makeover question regarding wiring. As I'm
going to change over to -ve ground with an alternator, and given that
the wiring is dubious at best, should I just grab a IIA wiring diagram
and go ahead and wire it from scratch with that (making allowances for
the different guages of course)?

And how does one go about making a wiring loom from scratch? Is there
a list of measurements (requirements) for the length of the various
wires on a FAQ somewhere?

If anyone has done this, I would welcome some guidance....

To treat rust on the inside of the can, go to your local motorcycle dealer

durable epoxy paint on the inside. Hope it works out

Have you considered purchasing a new loom from "Autosparks"? I'm curious
what the cost difference is from buying new wire and connectors to make
up a loom.

The electrical "architecture" on the SI and SIIs has at least one
fundamental difference from the latter SIIA, which is where major
junctions are made. And you would need to switch to the late IIA to
pickup the alternator wiring. So keep the basic SI setup and modify it
for the alternator. -ve vs. +ve ground doesn't make any difference for
the loom.

David Cockey

If you participate in water sports whilst wearing your Land Rover be very
aware of the possible consequences. I got water in my front hubs, even
though the seals were apparently OK but obviously weren't. My left front
bearing seized at 50 mph with no prior warning. The wheel locked for 5 ft.,
turning me into oncoming traffic, somehow missing a small car being closely
followed by a big truck, before freeing. I careened back over my carrigeway
before inverting the vehicle in the ditch. I was a passenger for the
duration due to an inablity to do anything but hang on.

I was very lucky. Make sure you do not have the same sort of problem.

On many hubs the halfshaft cap bolt hole which falls centrally between two
wheel nuts is drilled through to between the bearings allowing oil and
perhaps water to be drained out and new oil to be added.

Well Jos,

My car still has it's "grey" registration based on the old rules, to
keep this registration under the new rules I would have to make
