Thanks for taking the time to post to the list.Even though I've not
heard the other side of the story I think anyone reading this will
no doubt spend an extra day or so researching all aspects of importing
and hopefully avoid long delays and unnecessary added frustration and
cost regardless of the company employed.

Make sure if the tires are radial, to use radial tubes. Also, I dust
the inside of the tires with tire talc.

These aren't replicas. the original Dredd sheds, fibre glass shells on
101 vehicles, are being stored at the Gaydon museum. the Judge Dredd movie
used about thirty of these trucks, if you look closely at some of the
scenes you can tell they had a mix of LHD and RHD trucks. most don't
have an interior to them, only one full mock-up was made for the movie.
this is the one that the museum will likely hold on to. i would like
one if anyone could suggest how i could get one into the US w/o all the
legal red tape involved.

There aren't a whole lot of differences from the 109 "regular" to the
109 station wagon (5door). if your talking three door wagon to p/u then
there is no difference. the 5 door wagons have a different cross member
configuration, to accomodate the extra doors as well as the rear seat
area and the rear fuel tank. these can all be added to a 109 regular
frame. the only other difference would be if the frame were for a six
or eight cylinder truck, then they are even more differences.

Another difference is that on the 2door 109 the little support
brackets for the rear part of the body are taller. The 109 5door bed
drops down in the area of the rear seat.

On my way north through Seattle, I spotted a 109 series 11 or 11a with
tropical top and red reflector tape on the back. This was either tan or
light green, I could not tell due to Darkness and Drizzle (Seattle), anyway
I gave the thumbs- up and it was retuned with a smile.
Channel surfing, I caught part of a Jean-Clod-Van-Dumb movie in witch he
jumped off a ship and swam to New-York. As soon as he arrives, there are
some "local" scenes and in one of them, a series pick-up passes by in the
distance. The rig is dark-green with a white top and is a 109. Very
fleeting shot. John

Subject: Re: ECR (a european half-penny-worth-on-the-subject)

The problems of the missing documentation and allegations of bad trading
practices at ECR raise an important question for this listing.

Only a few weeks ago we had the latest discussions about whether this
list is or is not open for "commercial activity" - far be it for me to
profffer an opinion either way, this isn't on my server, but the general
concensus was that private sales, plus the activities of the "small and
strugglin' independents" whose offers are of interest to most of us a
some time or another, are welcome. I presume that ECR fits into just
that category.

But there is a downside to that "easy access to the user" which Bill's
great LRO lists provide - it means that we get to know a fair deal about
each other, and if we want to be "in the club" when we're selling, we
have to accept the responsibility of being "in the club" when we're
under attack.

Now whether ECR/Mike has shafted a would-rather-not-be-paperless LR
importer or not is not something which I can judge. But it does seem as
though the guy has a problem which will not go away until he gets some
papers.

If my mailbox has to be flooded with correspondance regarding ECR for a
week or two, I must admit to having more than a modicum of curiousity
into the other side of this story.

Considering how "brotherly" the majority of the LR community is,
especially amongst amateurs like me, I would say that any one operating
a business in such a "cultural environment" must be prepared to bend a
little to help others in distress - even though they may or may not be
the worlds most profitable customer. Let's face it - anyone who is
hooked enough on Land Rovers to import an ageing 109 into US from UK, is
a certifiable fanatic like the rest of us, and he deserves a fair deal.

Since being on this list I have witnessed "members" sending free
diagrams, drawings, JPEG pictures, documentaion, and repair recipes to
each other, for no other reason than to help a total stranger who just
happens to be repairing the same type of car. It strikes me that if ECR,
or any other semi-professional or professional outfit is seriously
interested in making a living out of folks like us, then they must
approach their business with the same "roverly-spirit" as their
customers - doing things the right way is by far preferable to just
making a profit.

In case ECR or anyone else thinks that my holier-than-thou attitude on
this on fails to consider the problems of the small business - I run my
own business too, most of my customers are collegues or fellow-creative
fanatics, for whom cash is the least important motivation for their
endeavours - so I know that it costs time, energy, and money in keeping
one's slate clean.

So come on Mike / ECR - either give us all a fair explanation, or give
the guy his papers, a fair price for the job, and a little helping hand
on the way eh?

No hard feelings!

Yours roverly!

Subject: [SER] wheel bearings

  Ol=E1 to all!

Time to summon the LR collective consciouness.

Oscar, my 88' IIA ('67), when I turn left, thus shifting the weight
right, makes a click-thump sound (low, I can feel it too). At
first, I tought it was the suspension, as it would make the sound 2,
3 times, when shifting the weight, and it would (sometimes), make the
sound again when returning to a straight line.
But it has become worse, clicking more, and almost during the whole
turn.

I guess it is the wheel bearing. Today I tried to disassemble the
front right wheel end cap (without raising or removing the wheel). I
removed the little cap, took out the 6 screws, undid the center nut,
(the one with a cotter pin) and removed the outside mounting (that
connects the half-shaft to the wheel, through the splines on the
half-shaft). That's where I stopped, because I don't have the shop
manual (the LR dealer almost laughed at me when I said I wanted to
buy it - they said that even the dealers had trouble getting the shop
manuals from Rover Portugal).

So the questions are: (tadaaa!) ;-)

  1. How do I get to the wheel bearing - do I have to unscrew the
big nut inside - the one immersed in oil ? What's the size on that
thing ? It's huge!

  2. It's easy to see if the bearing is the problem ?

  3. What are the torque values for all the nuts/screws on the whole
wheel mounting ?

Thanks a lot! If you want see Oscar (and me!), take a look at my
(still) very simple WWW page at http://www.ip.pt/~ip001307/

   Bye! Pedro

Pedro,

try jacking up each front wheel, grasp the top and bottom of the wheel and
see if you can rock it laterally. It may be that the swivel pins are worn.

This happened to my IIA and I had the same symptoms you describe.

(I'm sure there are plenty of other possibilities like spring bushes etc but
this is a good place to start!)

Cheers Tony.

Are you sure this is necessary? Most modern wheels (say, post-1970)
are safety rims which are suitable for tubeless tyres. It's easy to check
whether the rims are safety rims. They have a ridge to stop the bead
coming off and into the well of the wheel.
It's hard to draw with ASCII symbols to show where this ridge is. Ask
your local tyre service.

It it wasn't for the bandwidth I could scan a small section of a drawing
in my Hillman workshop manual to show the ridge. (The Hillman
manual is good for showing a lot of stuff that the Rangie manuals don't
cover. (British car - lots of commonality).

If interested, send me an email.

Is this really necessary with a galvanised chassis? It's just that my
long awaited ser III will be here on Mar 14th, and it's a galvanised
chassis rebuild. If it's advisable, is it convenient to do, i.e. plenty
access into the chassis etc.

Just a slight query, I've been on the digest for a couple of months now
and am really enjoying it. However, do we get EVERYTHING on the digest?
I know the theory behind it, I'm just wondering if anything is missed
out!

Subject: Helicoil

From: lenny@fof.coracle.com (Lenny Warren)

Many thanks to all who helped with advice on my spark plug problem,
helicoil etc. I've got it sorted now thankfully. I work for the Police,
so a word with our garage and I was able to borrow a tap and insert. It
was loctited in place and seems fine. The car will shortly become car
no. 2 as a lovely ser III is due to arrive on Mar. 14th. :-)

This means that the wife will drive the "normal" car, and I'll be
running my new Landie. Excellent!!!!

It's a 1981 ser III 88", 5 bearing diesel, O/D, FWH, hardtop with 90 windows,
blue and limestone, (what's the real colour name for blue?) and was
rebuilt locally 2 years ago with a galv. chassis. A work colleague has
it at the moment, but I've "persuaded" him to sell it to me!

Oh....... I can't wait! The waiting is driving me daft!!!

Catch you later,
Lenny... 61/2

Simple but not legal: smuggling and/of fradulent claims on import
documents.

Seriously; as has been discussed here numerous times, the only legal way
to import vehicles less than 25 years old is as a kit of parts. See the
LR FAQ pages for an excellent discussion by Bill. Limited exceptions
exist BUT THEY DON'T APPLY TO YOU (unless you are an established motor
vehicle manufactuer, or fit some other restrictive criteria and can post
a large bond, or are the Smithsonian Institution).

Regards,
David Cockey

Won't do anything in a galvanized chassis (assuming it ia the usual
hot-dipped galvanized). The zinc will be the best rust preventative
you'll find. OTOH there is other steel which could use Waxoyl including
the bulkhead and rad panel. Don't forget inside the door posts.

Subject: Jerry can rust & Diesel

I need some jerry cans & can get 2nd hand ones for a good price, but
like many old jerry cans these seem to have a thin, fine layer of rust
on the inside.

Can I just use them like that for diesel...or is it a bad idea?
