Is this anything to do with the threatened AOL massacre coming up on
Valetines Day? I understand certain email messages will destroy any
hard drive they come up against. This was reported in the Toronto

AH! There it is again. The fake of the email virus is appearing
very couple of months.
How the hell should a email do anything to my HD? Remember there
are not only Windows boxes on the net and even most UNIX machines
are not binary compatible due to different CPUs.
These poor souls have most likely been subscribed by someone else,

Ok Ok .... I bit to hard. On the west coast the police houses nearly always
have Land Rovers, you can't even get to a lot of houses in a saloon car. The
SIII 88s were alway inconspicuous. As they get replaced they are replaced
with 90 jam sandwiches. There are many reasons why the actual officers think
this daft, apart from the obvious beacon effect a Land Rover tends to get
scatched etc. in the wilds and a pretty paint job is not a good idea.

I did try very hard for the job of maintainance engineer on the radio masts
dotted accross Galloway as the car that came with that job was a police Land
Rover SIII. They didn't see why a computer geek thought he was suitable for
the job and although I tried hard I failed to convince them otherwise I
didn't get the job. All the police radio masts are on remote hill tops and
so every day would be spent off road in a Land Rover being paid for it. As I
used to do (computer) support work for them I even had the computer manager
from the HQ as a reference but they seemed to think that experience would be
more important than enthusiasm, can't understand why.......

The electricity board in Scotland use 130s and since moving down here (the
Cotswolds) I have noticed a lot of electricity board 130s here as well. BT
tend to use 90s. I haven't yet seen the electric board or BT with a
Toy-o-cars but I do accept that that does not mean they don't exist.

There is only one list. land-rover.team.net is an alias for
playground.sun.com. The land-rover-owner list has quite a few members and
so it can take some time to send a message to all users. After you
unsubscribe you will still receive any messages that were in the queue at
the time.

Try using an impact driver, electric, or air-powered. Worked for me for both
front and rear output flanges. Seems that there is enough torque to turn the
nut without having the flange spinning.

Give it a try...

Marko Ylikorpi asks about VW Diesels. I too have considered this as a
possible power source for the Series 1 in the event that the 2 litre
turns out not to be a runner. A colleague at the office is a great VW
diesel fan and user. He claims that his vehicle is at its best with a
heavy (4000lb) trailer attached (It goes great, doesn't stop too
well!!!) and has plenty of torque to move something as light as a Land
Rover.

The oily film is quite common on my Rover. I think it has to do with the oil
being slung out from under the Rover and the aerodynamics of the vehicle that
sucks whatever is under the vehicle and slaps it back on the rear door.

The clutch problem you describe might be some air that is getting trapped in the
clutch line....this then expands and acts like resting your foot on the clutch
pedal. Just a suggestion...

Bringing a lap top with this email message into a Land Rover will
cause the electronics to put it into permanenet 2 wheel drive mode
(sorry, this offer not available for series vehicles.)

My mechanic says in summer it doesn't matter. In winter, there may be a
nominal improvement in the performance with the 80W-90 since it flows a
little better in winter when the gearbox (and swivel balls) are cold. Once
warmed up, the 80W-90 is at manufacturers spec. The 85W-140 will "stick" a
little better to surfaces but it exceeds manufacturer spec. (In fact both
do, so it probably doesn't matter much).

Seems there's a lot of confusion about the major's address:

The address that I see listed at the top and bottom of my daily digest
is:
majordomo@Land-Rover.Team.Net

LR content, sort of:
I've recently stumbled across two nice models of Defenders.
One is a 1/32nd scale diecast that's actually 4 wheel drive (It has a
friction motor in it, plus a pair of differentials and a drive-shaft
linking front and rear axles - rev it up and it climbs like the
dickens!) It's Chinese made... about 5 bucks each... at my neighborhood
W*L-M**T -- about the only thing I'll ever find for my Landie there.

The other toy is about about 1/32nd scale... molded plastic - Good
details and proportions for a 90, though the pull-string in the back for
the motor spoils the lines a bit. It was also in the 4 to 5 dollar
range.

Life-size LR content - any suggestions for size and CCA output for a
replacement battery for my 1970 SIIa?? I don't have a lot of
accessories, but I need something that will turn it over nicely on a cold
winter morning. Any opinions!

The proper size battery to put in your Series vehicle is the biggest thing
that will fit in the battery box, in my opinion.

The one in Churchill is an Eveready 1000CCA beast - it fits the box, and I
don't think it would be possible to run it down cold-starting - at least I
never have.

My logic is this - if you blow a genny or alternator in the bush - the
bigger the battery, the longer you have before the old beast gives up the
ghost.

Of course, with the Killer Winch from Hell on the front bumper, no battery
is big enough...

everyday, i see the major's message - first 2 lines of every mail body
(real time - i don't know how it looks from the digest version) :

- not at Majordomo@playground.Sun.Com

probably, the major travels a lot as he's got a lot of addresses. so my
guess is - you guys can't catch up to him :)

- but seriously, try sending a message to Majordomo@Land-Rover.Team.Net
subject : un sub scribe <<your e-mail address>>
also, put in mail body un sub scribe <<your e-mail address>>

assuming the major has other mailing lists to attend to, he probably doesn't
know where you're subscribed to - with the Land-Rover.Team.Net address -
logically, you would be un sub scribing to LR mailing list.

if this fails, then there's really a problem - We're all stuck in this
mailing list as long as we retain these addresses.

People looking for a spin-on filter adaptor for Series vehicles should
call Paul Socholotiuk in Toronto at 416-504-3633 His price is well
below the $85US quoted for the 2 pce one mentioned a couple of days
ago. He charges about $50 cdn (depending on the day!)

These are great, and I have used one in my S3 for the past 3 years with
absolutely no complaints.

ARGGHHH! (beating his head against the wall)
E-mail messages *CAN NOT* do anything to your system. E-mail is a
text file, text can't hurt your machine. Someone *could* attach a file
that contains a virus or ActiveX control that could wipe your
system, but it couldn't do anything until you open or run the
attachement. That's why you should use a *good* AV program to scan
attachments, although that won't protect you from rouge ActiveX.

For instance, MS Word is *very* prone to macro viruses (the most famous,
Concept, was distributed by MS on their developer CD). One that's
been going around here on campus is the MDMA macro virus which runs
Deltree /y on your system. It does whacko things on Macs also.
(Do not rely on MS ScanProt, it gives a false sense of security, but
will let macro virus run under several common circumstances).

ActiveX controls are another matter. Used in many apps, and
downloadable from the web, they can be *very* dangerous. A famous one
to demonstrate their danger is called Internet Exploder. It reformats
your hard drive when it's run. AV programs won't protect you from
them.

Sorry for the length of an off topic. Maybe something like this could
be put in the mailing list faqs, so people might quite with the "Good
Times" warnings.

A possible problem with unsubscribing is not trying it from the same

into that problem when a domain was renamed here and the default
return address attached by the system changed from what it was when
I'd subscribed. I had to manually change it back to unsubscribe.

Well, maybe something as light as a series one, and maybe with a turbo. But
the main prob with the VW light diesel is lack of adequate protection for the
timing belt, and no other way to time the cam. A twig or a little water and
mud could cause thousands in damage in any currency.
I have enough stuff to build a couple of 2.4 six cyl diesels cause one of my
Volvo wagons is diesel, but the timing belt problem causes me not to look at
it to power a LR. BTW I built a normally aspirated 2.4 for the 740 (supposed
to be a TD in this market) cause my daughter was going to use it more than me
and I didn't want to be worrying about turbo cooldown. It seems about as fast
as the other wagon which has the 2.3fi petrol engine and automatic.

This had crossed my mind! It is counter-clockwise, right? Ie. not back to

As for impact driver: I have one from Halford's, but not convinced that it

Yup, very stiff. I don't recall how I eventually got it out; it's not out of
the realm of possibility that I eventually abandoned standard circlip pliers and
used needle nose pliers assisted by wedges.

Hi,
Did anyone happin to read the front page of the New York Times
today? There is an article entitled "Private Ventures Hope For Profits On
Spy Satellites", it as about using spy satellites for personal use for the
public. My question to you is, would this be a nice tool to map and chart,
uncharted areas of land not accessible to most off-road-vehicles, to find
new and better trails; or is this just one more log on the fire of how
we(being people who try to get away from civilization with our trucks) can
no longer enjoy the PRIVET quiet spots that only we know? Like the best
trout stream in northern Wisconsin that I just happined to stumble upon one
day.
Do you feel that the government is trying to sell the lost land we
live for? The example in the article sights someone wanting to take a sail
boat in the ocean, how this would help he/she could plot his/her corse.

Feedback please.

I don't know what to think of this new service. In Canada at least, the
entire country is photographically mapped and you can order the photos you
want, you can also get them in stereo views as well for determining relief.
Of much more use are the topographic maps which contain contour lines and
are much more easily used for off roading purposes. I suppose that if you
wished to use your LR to go charging off through northern forested areas
for a specific purpose it might make sense to order up a recent satellite
shot to show where the latest cut-lines and logging roads have been made
since the aerial survey but otherwise it looks like something a little too
exotic for ordinary off roading.

As for the mention in the story that yachters would make use of the
satellite service to find new and exotic cruising grounds, well I think
again that a decent chart would be of more use. Then again, if you were
going to sail "Tinkerbelle" through the Northwest Passage you might want a
recent shot of the ice cover to find a safe way through although here again
there are cheaper ways of getting that information.

pictures of my backyard, but pictures of Northern Canada or the rain forest

Speaking of spy satellites, did anyone read the article in Pop Mech/Pop
Electronics awile back about satellites having the ability to shut down
automobile computer chips and the govt selling the ability to the private
sector? ie The technology can be used by agencies wanting to locate you and
or stop you dead or by a civilian firm renting the technology to police
speed trap type activities. Of course the same technology will be used to
integrate GPS and mapping features into future cars.
Paranoia?? Probably.
All the better reason to own a 1969 ser IIa with caveman technology and a

I have to admit that American Women's Institute's seem to be better than in
the UK, if this report is anything to go by (again I am only cut and pasting
and therefore am making no personal guaranties of accuracy):-

_______________________________________________________________

CHICAGO, Feb. 10 /PRNewswire/ -- Four-wheel drive expert and adventure
consultant Daphne Greene will speak at a luncheon for Chicago area women
executives and professionals on Women's Day at the Chicago Auto Show,
Tuesday,
Feb. 11.
The by-invitation-only event is hosted by Denise Guardino,
president of
Land Rover Centres in Hinsdale and Barrington and Bill Jacobs Motorsports in
Naperville. It starts at noon in room S104A of McCormick Place South and
will
bring together women from a cross-section of careers.
Greene will encourage more women to learn how to drive
off-pavement.
"Women are a major force behind the popularity of sport utility vehicles, but
relatively few know how to take full advantage of them and get the most fun
out of driving one," she notes.
Greene fought back from two years of being bed-ridden and near
death from
Epstein-Barr disease to become the first and, so far, the only woman to make
the U.S. team in the Camel Trophy Adventure. Considered "The Olympics Of
Four-Wheel Drive," it annually selects two-person teams representing
20 nations from more than a million applicants and takes them and their Land
Rovers to a remote spot on the globe for a challenging 1,000 mile four-wheel
drive trek.
An adventure consultant with her own company, Twende, Greene has
organized
mountain climbing and backpacking trips in Africa, Alaska and the California
Sierra as well as led four-wheel drive excursions in the U.S.
She will be available for interviews following her talk and will
have
B-roll of the grueling competition and trials that led to her selection for
the U.S. team and of her traverse of the jungle backroads in Central
America's
land of the Maya.

I wonder - I notice a .lot of the request to unsubscribe merely say
UNSUBSCRIBE.

However, the Major is quite adamant when you do subscribe that
you should specify from what you need to unsubscribe.

To quote (with my name/address changed to protect the innocent)
 and using the address majordomo@playground.sun.com

If you ever want to remove yourself from this mailing list,
you can send mail to "Majordomo" with the following command
in the body of your email message:

    unsubscribe land-rover-owner "User Name" <email address>

in a similar way one should use the following to remove oneself from the
various lists:

unsubscribe rro "User Name" <email address>

   unsubscribe lro-digest "User Name" <email address>

   unsubscribecso-digest "User Name" <email address>

I haven't found it necessary to fill in the "User Name" <email address>
components but it might be best.

There was an article in LRO a couple of years ago where a couple from UK
converted a 110 Tdi into a camper and spent months touring North America
(total of 27,000 miles), but theirs was originally a Hard Top not a SW.
They had a roof tent for extra room and carried two kayaks aswell.

The issues to look for are August and September 1994 (if you would like
to see the articles I could copy them and post them to you if you send
your address)

Does this re-inforce some kind of 'I don't give a damn' macho image or is
your landrover so badly maintained that the dirt and grime of years of
use is the only thing holding it together?

My 110 is used in very serious off-road conditions occassionaly and it
does get noticed when driving through town with a few inches of mud stuck
to the side but at the earliest opportunity I wash it off and I do
frequently POLISH the paintwork - this is not done for anything other
than a method of preserving the paint and making it last a bit longer
without having to re-spray.
