When I went to England last year, I had a bug up my shorts about driving a Land
Rover for the week I was there. The LR hire places informed me that because I'm
under 25, I would have to insure myself. I picked up the phone and called my
U.S. insurance company, USAA. They were very helpful and indicated that my U.S.
insurance isn't valid in the UK but they would be happy to write an supplemental
policy. If I remember correctly, it was a flat underwriting fee plus a per day
charge, still quite reasonable. I bailed out of the LR hire idea because of two
reasons, though: It was too expensive to hire the LR between the extra petrol
and the extra insurance and I was going to do exclusively motorway travel, why
bother with the extra hassle.

The difficulty here, of course, is to find a decent auto insurance company. My
company, USAA, is great but they will only insure U.S. military officers and
their (former) dependants. Because so many are stationed overseas, they're
familiar with insuring in foreign locations. If you, your spouse, or a parent
was an officer in the military, sign up for USAA....its is universally
ancknowledged as the best insurance company out there. I was never in the
service but I "inherited" membership from my father. You can do the same if a
parent was (or is) in the service.

Alternatively, if this is not an option, call AAA, they deal with Carnets de
Passage and other international travel documents and would probably be your best
bet from the U.S. side.

Rgds,

So I still do not understand why people with 2-1/4 engines that want a spin
on oil filter don't just put a stock 2.5L oil filter adaptor on their 2-1/4
engines.

It seems the easy solution to me.

It's bad enough trying to get insurance for a Landrover if you are the
registered owner in the UK - the majority of insurers are only interested
in people with a history of no accidents/convictions driving a normal
mass produced tin box.

If you get a copy of LROI there are adverts in the back for 'specialist'
4x4 insurers, I'm not sure whether thay could help if you're not the
registered owner (that's something of a grey area with UK insurers).

What I've done in the past is have a drivere temporarily added to my
policy so they can drive my vehicle with my existing insurance -I've
never had a problem with ths before and it is probably the cheapest
option by far as long as your driving history is similar to your friends
and you are not classed as a bigger risk.

but then will your friend trust you?! you could end up costing him money
if you have to claim.

Hi all,
One of our members, a very ardent Land Rover-er, will be visiting family in
Whangarei, New Zealand between 3rd March and 9th April. Ken would dearly
like to attend a LR Club event anywhere in that vicinity. Would a NZ
correspondent on this list living in the vicinity of Auckland/Whangarei send
me an email address - or does anyone know of one. Club listings are plenty
but only snail mail addresses that I have found.

Looking forward to hearing from someone.

Subject: Painting a Rover
Date: Sun, 9 Feb 97 17:03:34 -0600
From: "Keith W. Cooper" <kwcooper@aristotle.net>

I know that this topic has probably been covered , ad nauseum, in the
past,
but we don't have the luxury yet of a search engine for the previous
mailings archive, so I've got to go ahead and ask.

I am looking to paint my '65 IIA (now a metallic grey color) in the next
year or so and had a couple of questions. I have found a good galvanizing
place that will strip the grey paint off my galvanized body parts and
re-galv. for a good price.

I would like to paint the rover ("Buford" as named not-so-lovingly by my
wife) the poppy red color but want to try to be somewhat historically
correct in my restoration. Did Land Rover offer the SIIA's in this color
in
'65? For that matter, what colors were offered in those years?

I know this next question is likely to cause a stir. I've seen some
aritcles about hand painting rovers. Has anyone actually tried this and
had
the outcome be any good? I don't necessarily need a show-room finish as
this rover will be out in the woods alot, but don't want a really crappy
looking finish either. If it actually works with good results, this would
be very convenient as I could do it in the garage at my home and it would
make it easier to get to all the nooks in the interior also.

As usual, thanks for all the help!! This list is a real life-saver for me
as I'm pretty isolated from other roverites, here in Arkansas.

Thanks-
Keith

I propose that we start a seperate list for subscribers who wish to

of unskilled unsubscribers at present, all of who seem to have got here,
but don't know how to get out (maybe a winch would help?).

we could call the new list - pleasestopsendingmemail@lro.team.net

soon they will just be a pain in the ****

Hi David,

My claim was denied because I'm roughly 6 months out of my corrosion
warranty. I was told that they would probably would have paid if I was the
original owner.

My thinking was that if I could produce a list of names and chassis numbers
of a number of people (preferably 2nd owners) who had the corrosion
repaired at LRNA's cost, even though they were out of warranty, I could
make a case for myself, and in the process set a precedent for others to
have their repairs done also.

I think that the list of names coupled with the fact that I own three of
Solihull's finest, and belong to a half-dozen or so Land Rover clubs (not
to mention The Digest) would get me a new tailgate.

What are your thoughts? Experience? Maybe a letter writing campaign would
do the trick.

If you don't mind I'd like to post this e-mail to the group in hopes of
sparking some interest.

The higher the speed, the better the chance of blowing any tranny leaks
etc. onto the back of your vehicle. This is especially true if you
overfill your fluid levels. If you have overdrive, run the little
overflow hose into a bottle or into a cross member on the frame (rust
protection!) so that it doesn't blow onto the rear.

This is truly an epidemic of unreal proportions. I go away for a short
holiday and come back to find 1200 messages! I wish some one could let me
know how to stop this madness. I love the information, but I believe this
has transformed into a "lovable" nightmare. Land Rovers will live forever,
but should this subscription? Someone please fill me in on unsubscribing in
plain english (or any other language for that matter)!!!!!!!

Tried that nearly six times in three weeks - majordomo insists I am not
allowed to and has promised to forward to the list owner - does this person
exist? Where do they live, is their yard fenced and if so can I burn their
landies with a well-lobbed molotov?

Seriously - I too love landies - this has become a bit overbearing with a
high noise ratio. Part of which is caused by poor slobs (me included) who
for whatever reason can;t get off and pointless (not very funny) replies.

Look, what's your problem? I have sent several messages
telling you how to unsubscribe from the list.
I know that several others on the list have sone the same.

Obviously, you are only trying to stir the list members and
have no intention of unsubscribing

The subscriptions are computer controlled so send the correct message.

Well, back to work with a vengence at the weekend, after stalling for a little
while waiting for tools, and doing other things.

Still stalled at two points:

1.) The circlip on the main/output shaft in the transfer case. Perhaps I'm
misreading the books, and its how the mag. describes the early boxes
(give the shaft a wallop with a soft hammer).
The circlip is very stiff. I bought some circlip pliers specially, but still
can't get it out. Perhaps the pliers are too small (if I could apply more force
it might come out, as I can free some of the clip, but not make it small enough
to come out)?

2.) That castle nut on the front output flange on the 4wd housing. This
is real tight, even though Ian Robinson (LRO-UK listserv's "resident garage")
says they never have any trouble. I've tried virtually everything.
Clamping (in a workmate), wedging it with a screwdriver (one bent Chrome
Vanadium Screwdriver, although I didn't care for it much),etc. Even left
it a week in WD-40. Anyone any more ideas?

Anyway, I am making some progress. Decided i'd start dismantling the main
box. So far this hasn't been too hard. Ian Robinson suggested a cold
chisel for the conical castlenut on the rear. This works. Had a little trouble
on the bolt on the (?layshaft? - anyway the lower one which pokes out into
the bellhousing when the cover is off). The trick for this one, is to
put the conical castle nut back on, engage 4th, then clamp the castle nut
with vice grips. Wedge the vice grips against the floor, and the bolt easily
comes loose with a standard socket set. Then the castle nut comes off with a
cold chisel, although a little more difficult than previously.

Fork assembly tonight...

bits)

Before we get carried away with flaming these poor unfortunate souls
(mainly because they have no love of LRs) it would be wise to keep in mind
that they may well be telling the truth about having never subscribed.

A popular way of gaining revenge or just making a nuisance for people is
to subscribe someone to as many mailing lists as possible. This can cause
the victim some grief if they have to pay for their mail feed or use email
for business purposes.

I speak from experience here as I was previously the administrator for
another mailing list. My system was set up to refer subscription requests
to me where the email address of the sender did not match the address of
the subscription. I was averaging about two requests per week where, when
I asked both addressees to explain the discrepancy, the subscription
addressee would claim no knowledge of the request.

It is also quite easy to spoof addresses so that the system can't pick
this up.

Alternatively, the major may be broken and not responding to the
unsubscribe requests. Has anyone heard from Bill lately?

No, but if you switch off your telly for long enough to observe the real
world you might even notice the police Range Rovers and Discoverys on the
motorways, as well as the police Land Rovers used by nearly every rural
police force in the country. I realise that for some people Scotland is a
heather covered hill on a toffee tin or something in a soap opera (or even
that green place that Daddy owns), but to 5,000,000 people its it is the real
world. And yes the rural police there do drive Land Rover, which is why when
depicting the place in a soap opera the use Land Rovers.

I agree with Dean here.I tried to unsubscribe, just before the
Christmas break. The Major said I had been successful. An hour
later, messages started coming through. When queried the Major
told me I was not on any other list.Result, about five hundred
messages after Christmas.Strangely,when I *re*subscribed,the
Major treated it as normal, and told me I was successful..again!
So there may be a problem.I'm pretty certain it wasnt me!

Matter of fact,I watch very little TV.And I'm well aware of Scotland's
place in the world,if only because my wifes people come from the
Borders(albeit the English side).Leicestershire police use,as far
as I am aware,no Range Rovers,have two 110 vehicles,and some
unspeakably naff Japcrap. But you will admit that a police vehicle
in other than high visibility paintwork is unusual.Since the S111
in the Hamish Macbeth series was not,as far as I remember,a jam
sandwich, that,in fact was what prompted the remark.
As for soap operas and the real world,I enjoy Last of the Summer
Wine as well, but wouldnt pretend that Yorkshire is anything like
that. It,too,is home to a great many people.
