From: Marc Rengers <mr@grant.media-gn.nl>

Hi all,

I'm looking for a 200 TDi and gearbox for my 2.5D 110 StaWag. My old 2.5D
was not treated very well by the previous owner and is now smoking,
rattling, the pulley on the crank is loose, he's leaking (but wich engine
is not leaking), I'm paying for fuel as if I had a petrol.

I can spend a lot to redo the engine, but I also want some more power for
better cruising-speed and better mpg.

Anyone?

I've been using Silicone brake fluid for about 5 years. I put it in during a
complete brake system overhaul (my 3rd). It has worked just fine.

Having said that, I'll offer a couple warnings to discourage others: 1)all
the sliding rubber parts (master and slave cylinder cups) must be coated in
silicone grease, requiring disassembly, and 2)the stuffs' too bloody expensive.
I do not believe it offers any performance advantage, and Castrol-Girling
dot-4, changed every year, should work just as well. Next time I rebuild my
system, I'll change back to Girling.
If you don't change your Dot4 fluid periodically, water will collect in the
lowest parts of the system (the wheel cylinders) and they will corrode.
Since water floats on top of the Silicone fluid, where it can be removed by
dipping a paper towel in the reservoir, this shouldn't be a problem.

I remove the fender first. It only takes about 5 minutes now that the
fasteners are rust free.
Of course, these are only my opinions,

Hmmm. I've been driving Land Rovers for about 20 years. During that
time people have demonstrated their ignorance about them, asked why I
was driving one since "no-one drives them anymore" and even claimed
that they weren't going to be made anymore.
All the while I kept plugging away in mine, could customize it the way I
wanted, and took it places I wouldn't trust other 4wd's.
I use OS/2.
(Hope you geeks out there appreciate analogy) :-)

ps This isn't part of a OS war or flame fest (in fact I wasn't going
to respond), I just decided to make what I consider a humorous
analogy. I know that operating systems seem to elicit even more
fanatacism than 4WD's, so this is my *only* post related to the
subject.

From: Simon Ward-Hastelow <simon.110.v8@dial.pipex.com>

This post contains even less LR content than before . . .

My little thoughts posted just a couple of days ago have generated more
response than any previous posting to this group and they had nothing to
do with Landrovers. Of all the replies I got we use Macs and PCs about
the same. 11/10

There seems to be a certain prejudice against the machines we don't own.
In my mind the same as situation persists in 4x4 market. I drive a
Landrover and certainly would not change it for a Japanese pretender -
but then again I have driven others and I have formed my opinion through
experience.

In order of preference, if I could not have a Landrover I would choose a
swb Shogun (Pajero) next, then a Range Rover (old style) then a Marin
Mountain Bike then a good pair of Timberland Boots.

A lot of people may be displeased by the huge attachment. Generally,
IMHO, jpegs should be made available via web or ftp. Putting them
in a message where people download mail via a slow modem, may be
paying for access, may make them rather steamed. Not everyone here
has the dedicated, super fast access that some of us have.

PS, my system said it was mime. That means zip for people with mime

Hey Nate, no Mac bashing here please. Not only are there Mac users in the
group, but there are quite a few Apple employees as well.
Those of us that prefer to use the Mac know that it is a better machine ;^)

(no flames please) The Mac, like the Land-Rover is a great machine that
hasn't had the best marketing there is to offer, I am sad to say that I
have been converted to a pentium at work just to keep the lawyers happy. I
think that it basicly sucks for what I do(Tech illustration) The same
program on a PC is slower and the comparable programs on the PC are even
worse. Luckilly I still use my mac as a monitor stand, and switch back to
it for the important stuff.

And it makes it even worse if the attachments are in base64, which is not
nearly as widely supported as uuencoded attachments. Even the ones with
superfast links might get pissed off because of that. ;-)

Subject: ROVERABILITY (WAS Politically Correct PC)

As an avid PC user, I am not always the greatest supporter of the
growing microsoft monopoly - but it seems that Bill Gates must be a Land
Rover Owner - just look at his slogan "Where do you want to go today".

OK - for users of the World Wide Wait, we should probably have decided
last thursday where we want to go today, but then, if we were on M*c,
there's no guarantee that the platform would exist when we got where we
wanted to be. M*c slogan should maybe be "..And how do you expect to get
back"

I really don't see the problem with the PC, one of mine started life as
a 386 sx and is now a 486 dx-4, soon to be a pentium something-or-other.
I don't mind built in obsolesence, if I can restore it one bit at a
time. Even a "frame-over" is not outside the realms of possibility.

Maybe we should compile a list of other "Roverly-acceptable" products,
we've been through cameras, we've almost milked computers for what they
are worth, and beer isn't worth fighting about, so - how about the
following candidates for "Roverability" -

	Audio systems
	Newspapers
	Tractors
	Furniture
	Musical instruments
	Clothing
	Videotape formats
	Literature
	Music
	Food
	Dog breeds

It may not prove that we are all the same, but an insight into our
respective weaknesses is both humourous and informative, if the past
weeks postings are anything to go by!

Are you sure you need to replace the shocks? They get very little in the way
of work, and many old ones are still pretty good. Apparently the thing to do
is to give them a good workout by taking them off the vehicle and working
them a few dozen times. Maybe twist the lower end every now and then until
you have it back in position, i.e. go through a full 360 degrees while
expanding and compressing the shock. This might make them "as new".

Here are some aftermarket numbers I gleaned from the net a while ago - they
are for later vehicles, but might still fit:

BTW, if you vehicle was built in 1959, it can't be a Series I or a 107" -
the last 107" pickups were built in 1956, and the last Series I was built in
1958. If you post your VIN and/or engine number, I am sure you would get a
few hundred answers as to which year your car was built (I would be the
last, I'm on the digest). Was it first registered in 1959?

Nah... Land Rovers are non-mainstream vehicles that do the job better than
the more common vehicles one sees more often. So, us real LRO's use Atari

Hi everyone.

Not much happening with the Dormobile project at the moment -I do still have
nice heated and CARPETED space to work, alas it is largely going to waste.

I was wondering if anyone had another designation number for the Zenith 36IV
one barrel?? I've got a local shop that rebuilds carbs cheap, but they
can't find a reference.

Did I mention that the two Zenith carburetors came attached to 88"s?

No, I don't have any idea where I'm going to put them...but I couldn't
resist the Koenig pto wich.

At what point does the accumulation of projects on the "to be done" end
start to push older projects out of the "completed" end???

"The Spoilers" also by Bagley. Takes place in the middle east. Good
LR content.

"The Doomed Oasis" by Hammond Innes. Some LR content.

Also the Comic Album "Quatre X Quatre" (Jeannette Pointu 2) by
Wasterlain. The main character, a reporter, covers the Paris-Dakar

Don't read Bagley and Innes (and Duncan Kyle) just to find Land

Sounds fair, I wouldn't swap my F or F2 for a polycarbonate Yuppie
camera!

>At least they still make most parts for the Canon, unlike old Nikons and
>Hallelblads ;^(

That's not strictly true, Nikon keep parts for 12 years after model is
phased out, but Gray's of Westminster, London actually remanufacture
anything that is needed, including parts that Nikon Japan can't get!
Sound familiar????

'Blad stuff isn't difficult to get, I can still get parts for a 500
which is ancient!

I used the F1, nice camera, but I've always trusted Nikon, my job
depends on it! I don't get a second chance, I either get my shots first
time or I'm gubbed! My friend is all Canon, but he got goosed when they
dropped the FD mount. All Nikkor lenses will fit any Nikon from a 1959 F

Have had some experience with silicone brake fluid implants,
Built a somewhat high performance autocross car in 1982 or so. Used all of
the right Girling hydraulic bits, calipers, wheel cylinders, both master
cylinders and clutch cylinder were either new or rebuilt. All off the shelf
stock components very similar to parts on our Rovers. Assembled and filled
system with silicone fluid and other than the occasional bleeding (every 2-3
years whether it needs it or not) I have had absolutely No Problems, no
static leaks, no corrosion, nothing. This vehicle spends a lot of time just
setting (Oct-April) and is driven only 2-3 weekends per month in summer for
maybe an hour per weekend. Of course, it hasn't seen much mud but it is
driven in wet weather (driven hard and put away wet?). Neglect is the worst
kind of abuse and yet the hydraulics are in new condition.
I will Never use castrol LMA dot 4 in any vehicle that I have
any intention of keeping for a long time or expect to use under adverse
conditions. ( however I'll put nearly anything in my daily driver - it's
expendable and easily replaced). Given the fragile nature of
Girling/Lockheed etc., I feel that the cost of silicone is more than offset
by the longterm savings and peace of mind have once you plunk down the
moolah. (Hint: buy it by the quart from one of the guys in Hemmings, Hirsch
I think). And 109 owners only have to bleed their brakes once a decade.
                OK, sermon over. Any questions?

Actually, a Land-Rover, which had carried a heavy load over it's rear axle,
appears in Hillerman's first mystery, "The Blessing Way". As the book's
copyright date is 1970, it was most likely a Series vehicle. There was no
mention of an audio system that I recall.

I believe a Land-Rover is also mentioned in Stephen King's "The Stand"
though I haven't read it yet--it's on the list.

More as they come to me...
