From: "Mark Gehlhausen" <Gehl@sphinx.nwscc.sea06.navy.mil> Date: Mon, 23 Dec 1996 07:47:07 -500 Subject: Comments Invited & "Car Talk" Roverites, I took a quick look at the '65 109 IIA pickup (originally an 88 diesel with full metal top) this weekend. As I mentioned, it has a Mercedes diesel. And it has a few thin areas in the rear cross piece, frame appears healthy elsewhere. The bulkhead is sound and bondo is limited to a couple of thin skim spots. I appreciate all of your comments, a number which have suggested plumbing in a different engine. After a closer look, I must agree. This is a tired diesel, fortunately no cutting was done to fit it in. I am told the frame was for a diesel, but I gather all frames offer the same engine mounts as the petrol/diesel blocks are the same. Please correct me if this is not so. I am seeking comments on which engine to go for. I know this is skirting the nonoriginal edge but this 109 is already bastarded. Can anyone else recommend the Toyota 2.2 litre petrol unit? I am also interested in the 3.9 Nissan diesel, as mentioned in the recent posting. I would go for the factory diesel but I have been told they are hard to find parts for. BTW, now that a deal is heating up with this 109, I will need a set of pedals and rear handles. Does anyone have a set they will sell me? If so, please reply to me directly. I was driving this last Saturday AM, with the LR on my mind, staging the battle to justify its purchase. I turn on "CarTalk" and like a message from the Gods, a woman calls in for an explanation of why her husband yearns for a '64 107 Land-Rover. Their answer: blame Marlin Perkins and "Wild Kingdom". For me it was "The Gods Must Be Crazy". How can you not like that vehicle? Too long already. From: "Johan Balijon" <balijon@iwwn.com.na> Subject: engine type? Date: Mon, 23 Dec 1996 16:14:31 +0200 Engine type? I have a 1982 109 S3, assembled in South Africa. I'm puzzled about the engine. It's 6 cyl. line unit, with all British parts attached (Twin SU HS 6, Lucas electrics, etc.). It features an overhead cam, but looks different to me from the (Triumph designed) Rover SD1, 2,3 and 2,6 liter units (If I'm correct these are cross flow (inlet on side exhaust on the other), where as this one has both manifolds on one side). Can anybody tell me engine this is? The car itself looks to be based on the S3 phase 1, with a radiator grille that is flush with the front wings (90 and 110 style). ------------------------------[ <- Message 5 -> end | Table of Contents | <- Digest 961224 -> Archive Index | <- Browser -> ]

I have a Smiths in an 88" and never get heat. More important than heat, I just want to see out of a small portal of the windshield. Can a Smiths easily be replaced by a Kodiak, is it worth while, and where might I find such an upgrade? Thanks in advance for all your advice. This means that the antenna is 5ft long and has a coil at the base to allow the antenna to be shorter than 106 or 108 in. (I forget which). This is the 1/4 wave length that the CB frequencies use. You can mount it about anywhere but on the roof in the center will give the best reception and transmission range as it needs metal to reflect the signal from. I have mine mounted along the NAS 90 rollcage that runs along the top of the wind screen and haven't had any problems with that position. On my sII 109, I had a 102 inch whip and the 4 or 6in spring mounted to the grab handles on the rear frame member. I don't think that this is the best position for the antenna, but, to be honest, I don't remember having any trouble hearing or being heard. With the 102 in whip, the SWR does not need to be set at this is the 1/4 wave length of the CB frequencies. Also, the antenna will need to be grounded to bare metal to work. If you drill through the body to mount it, you're covered, but if you use a gutter mount (or any other removeable mount) you need to make sure there is at least some metal to metal contact on the mount to the body. There are some shorter fiberglass antennas (some as short as 2 ft.) which work pretty good, but may not take the off road knocks from tree branches, etc. The stainless steel whip will just bentover and straighten back up. I also mounted a spring to the base of mine, which helps. Best of luck and Happy Holidays to you and yours. It sure would beat trying >to heat the cold outside air. Dave Ve4PN ; I've been going over this on the west coast list, I think, hopefully it wasn't on the Triumph list. Sometimes I forget where I am. Anyway I currently have the front clip of my 109 off being painted while I'm getting the head rebuilt, replacing the alternator, horn and making a custom front wiring harness. I couldn't help but notice that if I shortened the steel tube in the input to the heater I could bend the flex hose ninty degrees and have the intake sitting on the upper diagonal flat of the passanger foot well. This would be a very easy conversion. My heater output goes into a right angle duct that aims at the driver's feet. so the intake would be at the oposite side as the output. I asked if anyone could think of any problems. What came back was humidity. Since cold air can carry less water that warm air, even if its raining outside, heated outside air would put "dry" air on the windscreen from the demister. Assuming the main sources of moisture inside the car are resperation, wet clothes & leaks, the hot interor air will probably go to one hundred percent humidity. as demister air passes over a cold widscreen, the inside of the windscren would get fogged from the demister. What's needed seems to be a 'T' with a flap on the two input openings allowing you to recycle air whan the humidity is low and to use outside air when the humidity is high. If anyone want to work on this problem, think 4-1/2 inch dia tubing in the fan side, and enough space to put a PVC 4 inch 'T'. Date: Tue, 24 Dec 1996 01:27:47 -0800 From: Adrian Redmond <channel6@post2.tele.dk> Subject: Yuletide greetings to all a'rovering Hi folks! Just ready in time for Xmas - the 109 from 1976 which was a pick-up until Friday evening is now the proud owner of a brand new original hardtop with windows. I found it stored in my mechanics loft, where it has been on-stock for over a decade. New rubber mats, new rear door, installed CB radio (no antenna yet!) and a quick tune up and I'm driving a new car! the 88 had a big transplant job today - old vaccuum pump gave up, new one fitted, now she brakes again! A few weeks of sluggish, inconsistent and punctuated driving is now behind me, thanks to a new return spring on the gas cable at the distributor pump, and the arm on the gas valve has been bolted tight once again so that depressing the pedal actually increases motor speed to normal. That is also like driving a new car - and it's not even Christmas yet! I've only been on this list for six months, but this little fragmented community, bound together by a common joy of motoring in a very special way, has already become a small but important (and often time-consuming) part of my life - in some ways you are just a crowd of strangers who happen to own the same car as I do, in other ways, I feel I know you all! At this Christmas time, I just want to say thanks to you all for your words of wisdom, your sage advice, your insatiable humour, and above all your company! This is certainly the best club I have ever been a member of, no rules, no committees, no subscriptions, and yet, a fellowship more lasting than many organized clubs. We all owe our thanks to Bill and the Major (I have never worked out whether he/they are one and the same) for his time and his harddisk in keeping us together. I have driven Land Rovers for 15 years, (same two vehicles) yet I have learnt more about my cars, and my ability to make them work, in the last six months than ever before. It just proves that whilst it's fun learning by our own mistakes, it's more fun learning by the mistakes of others! We are a varied crowd, from different nations and with many differing views, however there seem to be many subjects of both LR and non-LR nature on which we broadly agree. Our cars seem to symbolise an inate and common desire to manage on our own, to share our wisdom and the experience of our stupidity, and to live a pioneering sort of life where the journey is at least as important as the destination. For some reason we have all chosen to get from A to B by the most circuitous route, with many planned and unplanned stops along the way. So, enough of this philosophical drivel! I just want to thank you all for making my hard-disk a better place to be, and I extend a special Yuletide greeting to my Danish LRO collegues. If any of you find yourself in my part of the world, my kitchen and my workshop are yours! I should mention that this adaptor would fit engine blocks sharing the bellhousing bolt pattern of the Chev V8 - 4.3l V6, 250 & 292 ci I6 etc. I'm not sure - anyone else? - if the smaller V6's (3.1 etc) share this bolt pattern. The adaptor I've got is aluminum but it's 2 9/32" thick not half inch. This is important in distancing the trans correctly from the engine (input shaft to pilot bush and clutch are both affected by adaptor thickness). Otherwise it's a simple affair. Let me know if you still want the tracing. Johan, If I'm correct, this model was known as the "R6", it was a typical SA Leyland development (bits and pieces scrounged from all over). The engine itself was an intresting original development (there's a first) designed to replace the old 2.6 roll-over sidevalve. The engine was apparently based on a 4 cylinder block that was of Australian (?) origin. It had the advantage of being lighter, stronger an less thirsty than its predecessor. Sorry thats all I can remember offhand, hope someone else on the list can correct/embelish. From: C.J.Short@ste0418.wins.icl.co.uk Date: Tue, 24 Dec 1996 09:59:52 +0000 Subject: RE(2): Heater improvement IIA and III In response to all this mail of heater improvements it reminds me of an article in the LRO many months ago, where they increased the heat output from the heater by adding a second heater matrix from a Mini (approx the same size). The procedure appeared to be fairly straight forward and no drilling/cutting of the vehicle was required to install it. I`m sure when I get home I`ll be able to find the issue it was published in if anyone is interested. It certainly appears that this option will be preferable to cutting a hole in the floor to add extra heat which will only be of any use when the vehicle is fairly dry (Summer). Something to think about perhaps. Anyway to all fellow LR owners out there, where ever you maybe. Have a Merry Christmas and very Happy New Year.
