I personally would recommend putting the lacing on the bottom of the swivel
assembly. That way, anything that does get in can drain right out. Also,
there's less material to bunch up when you turn. Important thing, though, is to
make sure that you don't let them rip and start accumulating lots of bad stuff.

I wasn't actually trying to spread any misinformation, but was offering my
sketchy recollections re: UK towing and inviting clarification of the facts.

And we wonder why us Landy owners/repairers and mechanics have the reputation of
being hammer- wielding neanderthals ! I even use the 'screw type' ball joint
splitter !!!

RE: X marks the (piston) spot.

*extreme conjecture warning* (it has been a while since my I.C. theory)

The X signifies the driving side of the piston on the compression stroke.
Assuming the crankshaft is turning clockwise (no, not the clockwise thread again
please) as you look at the engine then the X would be on the left. This
originates from the days of split-skirt (for expansion) pistons (does a 2.25
have these ?? I don't want to drop the crank to check) where to have the piston
180 degrees out would mean driving on the split side of the piston.

I happen to be in the process of fitting some old rice-burner seats into my SIII
(great way to avoid dealing with the family you never want to see :). They're
out of a late eighties Honda CRX. Blocked up with 2x4s, the seats are pretty
comfy. Will let you all know how the installation goes.

Ok, here goes. On page #13 at the bottom right corner of the Dec. issue of
LRW . There is a photo in the article, Conociendo Las Americas that shows
two young women in front of a white LR 110. These women are "flashing" the
photographer by exposing their breasts to the camera by pulling down their
tops. Both are smiling/laughing and this appears to be a prank perhaps done on
a dare. There really is't anything offensive about it.

It's not the inner nut, but rather the outer. For the inner nut, I find
that hand tight is just fine. Run it down tight with the fingers and spin
the hub to even out the fresh grease that could create a backlash later on.
Back it off, then tighten again. For the outer nut...that's when the
spanner enters the picture. That sucker gets torqued - and locked.

FWIW - I hope to head up to the mountains this weekend to check out some
trails. I've just learned that one of my favorite trails in the GWNF has
reopend...after twenty years of closure. Hot damn! Cheers

Normal stuff... the digester deletes lines out of middle of any quotes that
exceed five lines. I believe it was done to cut down on the size of the
daily digest since most people generally quote the entire original message

My Land Rover parts catalogue 1954-57, 3rd edition, June, 1956 doesn't have
any suffix notation for the gearbox, but provides the part numbers below
for the intermediate gear and related parts. Of course, if LR has done
what Lucas has done, the part numbers have changed several times over the

part description qty part no.

Gear, intermediate 1 219468
Roller bearing for intermediate gear	2 219466
Thrust washer for intermediate gear	2 219469

I have a Defender 110 300Tdi. This makes the occasional trip to the
Alps in the depths of Winter, where the inadiquacies of the heater
become manifest. I'm contemplating installing a desil-powered heater,
either to pre-heat the engine coolant and boost its temperature whilst
running, or to directly heat the air in the LR. I'm leaning towards the
idea of an air heater, because the beast never has a problem starting in
the severe cold, and I don't like the idea of running the engine hotter
than was designed, just to let the haeter work better. I've already put
a high temp stat in, with imperceptable results.

Anyone have any experience with these heaters?

Have LandRover changed the heater from what was in the earlier 110's? So
long as the blower is on full I find the heater in my '85 110 to be more
than adequate in even the coldest weather. You do need to have the blower on
to get any amount of heat into the car, unlike other cars where the heater
matrix is in the passenger compartment.

the main streets clean, one can be running on bare pavement for several
minutes before passing over snow or ice again to allow wheelslip. Would this
put undue strain on the shaft? (I was in 2WD both times the shafts blew.)
Or am I just a statistical anomaly?

2. Had spotty ignition, faulted HT leads, so decided on replacement and
went for "Genuine Parts" to treat myself, based on glowing recommendation
for GP leads once read in LRO digest. Leads came in factory sealed bag --
one was good hand-span too short to reach No.4 plug and another *just*
reached No.1 plug. Had to leave one old lead on. Coil lead boot seems a
tad too small to fit over Lucas coil, keeps squeezing off, too. Apart from
spiffy LR logo on leads, quality seems not better than generic
off-the-rack at Canadian Tire. Live and learn. Ignition much improved
however.

3. Too lazy to go and look in FAQs to see if these magazines are listed but
Pink Panther buffs might want to track down Wheels and Tracks, Issue No.9
from 1984 for nice piece on SAS LRs, incl super color back cover of 10 FG
31. These back numbers can be had from RZM Imports, PO Box 995, Southbury,
CT, 06488, 203-264-0774/4967 for about $7.00 or so. Issue No. 2 had a
piece on amphibious LRs and a back color cover pic of one of the 101
FC prototypes with trailer on desert trials. The mag is all about
military vehicles, occasionally features LRs.

4. Further to snow mentioned above. Had a small blizzard here, got self
stuck three times in floorboard-high drifts, extricated each time with the
mighty Tirfor -- great practice. Also winched neighbor out of back lane
into his yard with it. (Can't do that with a bumper mount :^) )

I've no idea if the heater has been changed, but the engine supplying
the hot water certainly has! The TDi's run cool, and I wouldn't be
contemplating spending the money if the existing arrangement wasn't
seriously inadiquate in the cold!

Sorry if I caused offence, I was just checking you knew that you have to
have the fan on. It took me a while to realise that this was the case when I
first got my Landie.

You could try a radiator muff, at about 30 pounds it will be a lot cheaper
than fitting a diesel burning air heater. You could experiment with a piece
of cardboard first to see if it achieves the required result. Land Rovers
are seriously over cooled and I suspect there is little or no risk of
damaging the engine, but watch the gauge just in case!

If anyone is keeping track, my 73 s3 has the sun sheet, but not the vents nor
alpine windows. The windows are on my wish list, tho.
