Subject: Vermin Smell! Help!

Forgot to add this to my other post. The Series III had been inhabited by
at least one mouse, and no doubt a colony at one point in time. Fact is,
the truck smells really bad!!!! As I was driving it the other day, I
noticed some small nuts falling onto the dash from the front trim piece
above the windscreen...I really didn't want to find out what was up above
the headliner, but HAD to try and get rid of the smell. Well, the treasure
I found was about 6 pounds of small nuts, 8 pounds of mouse excrement,
various nesting materials, and one quite dead, mouse.
Headliner was removed, as well as the straw/cloth insulating material
glued to the top. Smell persisted. Copious application of Lysol and
general airing out...smell persisted. What works best(other than putting
another top on!)!? Should I get some stuff from the pet store that is
specifically for domestic animal mistakes? My mother(God bless her!)
suggested spraying with hot water/Clorox bleach mixture. Somebody help me!
I have a new headliner, but it's not going in until the smell exits!

Cheers! John

Re. sleep, as those who observed our arrival at Dunsfold on sunday
will have noticed, all it takes for my 3 year old is a smooth driver,
(I'm a part-time ambulance-man) and a pair of .44 Magnum rated ear
defenders (soon to be needed only for the land rover.....) and he's
away.

Re. fuel pressure, when we used webers esp. this was a critical
problem, weber UK used to sell a regulator, with or without a filter,
called Filter King, improved the mpg noticibly when fitted, most cars
with webers as oe have a return line to take care of over pressure.

Smell removing will need a vicious smell remover - bleach or strong paint
stripper? :-)

or, mask it. Most landies have some kind of smell. Mine tends to smell of
paint, thinners, oil (esp. gear oil on long runs during hot days), exhaust
fumes (technically illegal), WD40, brake fluid (weak smell, tastes digusting,
but a wicked paint stripper!), anti-freeze (also tastes surprisingly foul),
silicone sealant, Lucas rubber (burning!), burning clutch disks
(lastnight's "experience"!),etc.

:-)

With the clutch, I was on the way to the "Thatched Garage" to have the clutch
done. It finally gave up about 5 miles short (30 mile journey). Hopefully
it will be done tonight or for tomorrow.

Go to a pet store & tell them you want to get rid of the smell of tom cat
spray. Follow the directions. Treat your interior a couple of times. The
stuff is expensive but it works. You might just want to treat your entire
interior.

The Clorox/water mixture is for sterilizing. It gets bacteria & fungi &
such but not odors. Never mix bleach with household cleaners & detergents.
Not unless you wish to study the effects of clorine gas on lungs.

Once things are deodorized and clean, if you wish, you can add your
favorate fragrance. It works best at a low level to add a plesent smell and
not large doses to cover an unplesent smell.

I use a bottle of redwood oil to remind me of home (I live on the edge of
the redwoods).

I think his point was that he was going to have the multimeter
regardless. And like me uses any use of it to justify it. Measuring
the resistance from my left hand to my right hand (measure the lethal
current). I could use 10 cents worth of parts to test it. two wires and
some steel wool, when the steel wool catches fire, there's current.

Sound advice...don't use tilex on your body panels either...some household
cleaners specifically mention that they are not to be used on aluminum OR
painted surfaces. Don't ask me how I know this.

Not a misprint or anything. My Zenith is exactly the same way. I heard
someplace that solex bought Zenith hence the solex stamp. My carb was new
in 1992 (thanks to the PO) and caused me a bit of confusion, too, when I
first had to take it apart.

Sounds like you're flooding. I had similar problems when I first got my
LR.

Go ahead and open it up, its pretty simple as far as carbs go. As other
people have said, make sure the body halves arn't warped by setting them
on a piece of glass. If on side is warped (my top half was), sand it with
400 or 600 wet/dry sandpaper to get it smooth again.

Also, note the float adjustment as per the Haynes manual. Its pretty
critical to have this right to keep from flooding out. When I checked
mine, it was *way* off, causing my problems. (I think the PO bought it,
assumed everything was adjusted correct and bolted it on right out of the
box).

Thanks to all who replied to my origanal message."What have I done??"(And
no I don`t sleep in my LR)

Back to the white smoke question I asked -
("When first starting the engine there is what looks like white smoke
coming out of the exhaust, this seems to pulse on and off for a bit and
then vanishes.")

Well it seems to look alot worse than it did before. It is now like plumes
of white smoke when I start it which last for quite a while, well saying
its smoke, it does feel wet if I hold my hand in it. I have also noticed
that if I look in my radiator (this is while it is still cold and not
running) it appears to be full, but if I squeze the hose that goes down to
the thermostat, it doesn`t have any water in it? (strange I thought water
found it own level?) The expansion tank is about half full.
So next I thought `Head gasket`, checked the engine oil, nice and black? No
creamy gunk?
Could it be a cracked head or cylinder, or would this also leak water into
the oil?
This is getting worse!!

John Cassidy says his "...Smith's oil pressure unit does not appear to be
functioning. How do I test/trouble shoot this, and how does the damn thing
come out of the dash!?"

If it's electric, my recommendation is to take it out and replace it with a
hydraulic one. I found one in a wrecked MG out behind a local British car
repair shop. Cost me only a few bucks, and it's the same size as the
electric gauge. I did have to adapt the fitting for the sending unit a bit
to accept the gauge feed tube (drilled it out and tapped it for 1/4" npt),
and plumbed it all in with compression fitting stuff from the auto parts
store. A resourceful Roverite ought not to have any problem making this
conversion. Sorry I can't help with removal. Mine's a IIa.

I'm glad I made this replacement, as I've noticed a general fall-off in my
oil pressure in the last year. When it was really hot this Summer, idling
oil pressure would fall to 15 psi or so, and the idiot light would flicker.
At speed pressure is a steady 50 psi. I've got the parts to rebuild the
pump, but it doesn't seem so bad now that it's cooler. Anybody got any
lessons learned with oil pump rebuilding?

Additionally John states, "The fuel gauge seems to have decided to take a
vacation as well. Tank is full, but it reads just proud of 1/4 full.
Where do I start?"

Sound like a bad sending unit to me. These are pretty cheap from the
sources in the UK.

I would appear that the weekend's spate of junk-mail has died down - at
last! But a thought occurred to me.

I seems that quite a few of us on the list work in the media or
entertainment industry (myself, Bill Adams, a few more?)

Could it be that somewhere alonge the line, one of us has got onto a
media-related mailing list without knowing/wanting it, and that they
have got onto LRO by some simple search on our names?

Beat's me, but it's damn irritating, and I hope one of us is not
unwittingly responsible. Any Ideas on how to avoid such junk?

Subject: Honouring obligations...

Hello all,

I am seeking advice and feedback from the list on a matter that is close to
my heart. Like many other Land Rover owners, I trade, buy and sell used
parts to be able to make my vehicle roadworthy, comfortable, and up to my
standards. This list is a very good medium to find that good part that you
are looking for and the price is usually fair, i.e. less than a new part
from one of the Parts houses. I often supplied parts to guys a few hundred
miles away from me and I was glad I could help'em out, I am not looking for
any profit, but just getting rid of a part that was siiting too long in my
garage. Several times a week I see non-commercial ads for parts wanted or
for sale on the list. It is all part of a good and honest friendship and so
far I never was confronted with a bad experience. Except once, which was a
few days ago.

A deal was done on some parts changing hands. The price was negotiated and
fixed. A delivery date was settled and everything seemed fine. However, the
seller decides to change his mind, saying that he wants to keep the parts
after all. The deal goes down the drain without consent of both parties.
Legally, there was a contract and the seller didn't honour his obligations.
I could ask him to do so and take all legal actions available to do so and I
would undoubtly win my point. But the Land Rover community is like a family,
and no-one wants to brake-up such a family.

How should the LRO react? Let it go like nothing happened and forget the
whole thing? Everytime he gets a deal on some parts, run to his "normal" car
(it's faster) and get immediately to the seller/buyer's place as fast as
possible in case he changes his mind, even if it's 300 miles away?

If the buyer/seller was a company, it would certainly be easier, but in this
case, it is a private party.

What kind of confidence should we expect from fellow LRO's?

Up to now, this confidence was rated very high on my scale, for example
having parts here that I promised to a guy I don't know 1 year ago and still
available for pick-up at any time. Am I too naive, trusting strangers that I
never met, or am I just unlucky?

It happened to me over the weekend for the first time and I know it happened
to others as well in the past (It must have). How did other LRO's react?

I would really like to have your comments on this issue since I believe it
is a very important one to me, since it is the only way that I can manage to
own a Land Rover. If I couldn't buy used parts, I wouldn't be able to own
one, not even three, which is the case.

Apologies for the extra-long post, but I firmly believe that it is relevant.

Frustrated in the Townships,

Michel Bertrand

Subject: Re: Problem moves to new level

When addressing one's troubles to the list for helpful responses, it's a
real good idea to specify model, year and engine as it helps to weed out
the BS. Throw it on your signature and you'll not forget.

If you are experiencing actual smoke and not white steam (which will
dissipate faster), you more than likely have an oil problem. There must
be water in that hose as your puke tank is half full.
Water in the mix will definately prevent the diesel from firing at all,
so we can pretty much rule that one out.
I guess you've got either a sticky valve, badly worn valve guides or
thrashed valve seals. Or all three. This will allow the engine to suck in
huge gobs of that disgusting black gunk you use as engine oil, thereby
causing a minor Exxon Valdez situation in you immediate environment.
Check for dead canaries.

What to do?

Remove the cylinder head and get it to your friendly rebuilder's. Be sure
they have experience in diesels! Too expensive right now? See thread on
rope trick re: valve seal replacement. Or blow hot death on all who
venture near. Yer call, bud.

Subject: Honouring obligations (Again sorry Michel)

Hi Michel,
I have some bad news about the roofsides, after thinking about the parts
collected
from the 109 pickup stored in my garage for the past few weeks(I can't help
but see them every time I go out there)I'm having a real tough time thinking
about selling
them.(I know it's really not fair and why the heck did I say I'd sell them)
I sure hope you can understand as fellow Land Rover owner and that you won't
be to
peed off at me.
I really should have taken more time think about what I was doing but
basically I figured I could use the money to restore my Wagon.(I can see I'm
going to have some serious storage problems in the near future as when I do
find a Rover part I
inexplicably fall in love with it and can't bear to part with it)Right now
I'm "only"
short a frame and tailgate to reassemble the pickup and as of late I'm
hopeful that I can find a frame at a reasonable price.(tailgate's don't seem
to be hard to find)
I have had other offers on the hardtop, some for more money and if this was
the reason for me changing my mind after the agreement we had I'd feel like
a rat and probably
not be too concerned about how you felt.
Lastly, for the past roughly 2 months I've eaten, slept and worked with Rovers
on my mind(ask my wife, she's getting pretty tired of it)and this isn't an
easy decision for me make but I think I should take the winter to try to
track down a reasonably priced 109 frame for the pickup as overall I need a
lot less parts to reassemble it.
I shouldn't have made a snap judgement(on the LRO list for the first couple
of times)
to sell the hardtop, which also stems from a desire from me to try to help
people and I'm hoping you'll understand.
Regards,
Steve
PS,If there is anything else I can find for you(believe me this won't happen
again)
please let me know.I will keep my eye's open for another hardtop.
(This is the original letter to which Michel refers,I realize I was at fault
but will not hide behind my P.C.)

Hi,
Regarding your request for reaction from people from the list.
Just like you I too need to buy, sell ,and trade new and used parts
in order to keep my Landrovers going. The fact that a person has sellers
remorse and decides not to sell somthing seems to be a pretty petty issue to
bring to the list. After all we are talking about Land Rover parts, not
organ donations.
If in all your dealings with people you have been disappointed once,
you should consider youself lucky. The fact that the only thing that you
spent was your time and lost no money during this transaction makes me want
to think their is somthing else going on. In the past their have been
discussions of many people who have been screwed out of thousands of dollars
by bogus Rover companys who (as far I Know have not got their money) are
still involved in litigation.
I think your opinon about the group is a very accurate one.
Information, honesty, and friendship is what I have gained while being apart
of this list. I also understand this is a hobby (fun) for most of the people
on this list and I think sometimes people lose track of that.
Soooo, Give the guy a break, pour yourself a Guiness and go work on
your Rover.

Subject: diesel smoking suggestions wanted (long)

I'd like to solicit some ideas on possible causes of, what I consider,
excessive smoking from my 2.25 diesel in my '64 109. First a description,
then some data:
DESCRIPTION OF SYMPTOMS:
1)No smoke at cold startup for 10-15 seconds.
2)Moderate but annoying amounts of blue/white smoke at idle, hot or cold.
3)Really terrible smoke on trailing throttle (downhill or when even slightly
slowing down with my foot lightly on the throttle)
4)No smoke slowing down if I remove my foot from the throttle
5)No smoke at/near full throttle on the highway (confirmed by a friend
following in his diesel. He reported seeing only heat waves coming out the
exhaust)
6)Fuel consumption is 27mpg highway, 15mpg city.
BACKGROUND DATA:
1)engine is a marine version, early IIA, professionally rebuilt in '72.
2)engine was run after the rebuild, but not much, according to the guy I
bought it from.
3)engine was stored under cover until '95, with the fuel system sealed and full.
4)engine was easily started after installation, replacement of filters and
flushing and bleeding of the fuel system.
5)pencil-type glowplugs have been fitted. An old (non functional) set of
stock glowplugs was tried without affecting the smoking problem.
6)engine uses no oil. There is no blow-by at idle, nor any indications of
blow-by. No indication of dilution. Haven't done a compression check yet,
but hand-cranking indicates all cylinders have equal compression and not
much leak-down. (don't try to crank start a 2.25 diesel)
7)no coolant consumption. No residue in coolant. 190deg thermostat. No
temperature problems.

MY CONCLUSIONS:
1)Smoke is excess fuel, not oil
2)Related to governed fuel control
3)Bad injectors?
4)Bad injector "idle" jets?
5)not valve seals (no oil consumption, no smoking at WOT, no smoke at full
deceleration, no blow-by)
6)not rings
7)could it be the injector pump$$$?

To save bandwidth, suggestions can be made directly to me.
Thanks,
jouster@earth.rocket.com (John Ousterhout)

You could have a bad guage but more than likely it's a bad sender or maybe a
broken wire on the sender. The sender is located at one end of the oil
filter. Check out the condition of the wires and the push on lugs at the end.
There are actually two senders - one for the guage and one for the warning
light. If you turn on the ignigtion, and ground the wires (electrically to
the engine block) you should see the warning light go on and I think the
guage should read something. If you can get the guage to move, try replacing
the pressure sender.

To remove the guage from the dash, you will have to remove the metal piece
directly above where the guage is located. This metal piece is in the
"parcel tray" and is held in by a couple of screws. Then, there is a plastic
cover over the guage. The cover is held on by two screws with nuts. After
you get that off, you will find the usual bracket holding the guage in
place. Accessable from the back, of course.

Try cleaning the terminal on the fuel tank where the wire attaches. You may
also have a bad ground at the tank due to corrosion or whatever at the
mounting points.

Dear S. Stoneham and Michel:
As a "disinterested party" but a Land Rover lover from far away: it looks
like a misunderstanding to me. You are both passionate Land Rover owners.
You owe each other a Guinness, and a toast to getting your Land Rovers
fixed up as you desire. Thanks to you both for posting to the list.
Best wishes,

Subject: Rally report

I'll let the other 'net denizens fill you in on the rally. Yup, it was
pretty cold Friday night...folks down from New York said that they hadn't
had frost up north yet. The only problem Friday night was that some bloody
git left the tap open on the keg of porter. $50 worth spilled into the tub.
:-0 And for those trying to find the site, the signs started disappearing
early. By Sunday morning, *all* had been knicked.

The rally featured a number of competitions: teeter-totter, Aluminium Man
Triathlon, blindfold obstacle course, we even had a slow race.

In the teeter-totter, the winners were:
        1) Eric Bautz, 14 seconds
        2) Greg Wilson, 37 seconds
        3) David Stauffer, 50 seconds

The Aluminium Man Triathlon featured a mechanical task (timed spare/road
wheel swap), the trails course (complete with a written trivia test at the
end), and as we were running late, an orienteering run Sunday noon to locate
control points by compass - and then identify the parts.
        1) David Ryan
        2) Jeff Berg
        3) Jared Silbersher

The blindfold obstacle course had the navigator communicating to the
blindfolded driver by UHF radio. (The second place winner was guided by his
10 year old daughter!)
        1) Stuart Moore
        2) Jeff Ham
        3) John Ryan

Most Functional Vehicle: the "St. Johns Ambulance"
Peoples Choice: Bob McCullough's '67 Forward Control
Slow Race: Bob McCullough, again.
Greatest Distance Traveled: Pat Parsons, up from Miami Beach in his 110.
(Sorry Dixon, Miami is at least 2" farther away..on the map that is.)

Someone ripped into the feeley-meeley box and took out all the parts, so
that competition had to be abandoned. However, the dinner and movie at the
drive-in went well (in keeping with the 'fifties' theme of the event) with
81 vehicles in attendance, and the band back at the farm sounded *great*.

There was a nice article and photos on the front page of Monday's
Charlottesville paper, including Jared at the wheel of his 101. There was
also a nice close-up of David Bobeck's green beastie.

Dixon counted 133 vehicles. We had 132 registered, and that did not count
my two, Mike's 88 (nor his "fleet" of project vehicles scattered about), the
Camel Trophy Disco, nor the several vehicles from LRNA or Land-Rover
Richmond. Including several who snuck in Sunday, the total was probably
145. Incidentally, if anyone left/lost a male tabby kitten that was
discovered in cat-hater Jared Silbersher's 101, let me know.

Oh well, considering I SAABed it there... :-) Only thing that
saved it was the claim that the SAAB pull is an OVLR event
& ROAV had to pick a different marque to drag about... :-)

Next year I'll try to bring the beastie down. Need a worst of

Blair,
I can justify just about everything to myself...especially when I am
alone with no one to tell me I'm wrong! ;-) But seriously, my wife is
very understanding, but has also become quite knowledgeable about Rovers
during our short stint of ownership. The Series III that I just purchased
was owned by an acquaintance of mine and I have patiently waited over two
years for it to come on the market.
I used to be an impulse shopper(and still am on some small ticket
items!), but my wife tempers my enthusiasm with healthy skepticism as to
the purchase in question. It seems that if I demonstrate to her(sometimes
I feel like a lawyer!) that I have researched the buy and that it's a good
deal for the $, she can accept it some small way.
As you can see, we are a Rover family, but I do like motorcycles!
The Ducati is the Italian sportscar I'll never have, and the others were
bikes that I had my eyes on for literally years before purchase!
My wife is the best, but my 3 year old takes the cake! When I drove
the Series III into the yard, he said, "Daddy, why did you buy that cool
truck for!?" Before I could answer him, he added, "that truck is really
very cool!." Very cool indeed!

Cheers! John

P.S. I also used the argument that each of our sons will have his own
Series truck to drive in 14-16 years, saving us the cost of new/used
vehicles for them!

Subject: weatherstripping, where to start a restore.

Hello all,

being completely out of my mind I have picked up a derelict rover that will
be a resto project for my son (age 10) and me. If it is driveable when he
turns 16, he can have it. How do I start? Take the whole thing apart and
paint the frame? The frame is great and I think POR-15 outside and waxoyl
inside would make it impervious to anything. The panels and guts? I guess
they need to come out and be dealt with. Any pointers, understanding that
probably very little will be done this winter?

Also, (see first sentence above) I am getting an 88 pu. needs paint,
needs the seats recovered and door panels and floor mats and a headliner
but runs good. Also needs weatherstripping. I have had loads of fun with
genuine (an my dormobile) and wonder if anyone has used and can recommend
the adhesive installed stuff that atlantic british sells.

cheers to all,

PS. for those who don't know, I have the dormobile page:
http://wheel.dcn.davis.ca.us/~jfhess/homepage.html

I have added a couple new pages: our trip home and a couple outings in the
mendocino national forest. your feedback is welcome. dormobile interest
and correspondence appreciated.

Hello David,
| ("When first starting the engine there is what looks like white smoke
| coming out of the exhaust, this seems to pulse on and off for a bit and
| then vanishes.")
OK. A little diesel theory (You had a diesel, right??):
A cold normal aspirated diesel will produce white/grey/blue smoke
at the start. This is just unburned fuel and normal. My 2.5D
smokes for about 1/2 km if I drive off right after starting.
Turbocharged diesels however produce black smoke at the start for a
reason I forgot.
If you have a coolant leak (eg in the head gasket) you'll have white 'smoke'
more or less all the time. Why should the leak stop when the engine is warm?
You'll loose water, too. But there needn't be any water in the oil if it just
leaks into the cylinder.
If your engine burns oil (eg. shot piston rings / valve stem seals) you'll get
blue smoke that clearly smells like burned engine oil.

You should be able to distinguish this possibilities by the smell of the smoke.
So try to smell and tell us what engine you have. And keep an eye at the
oillevel (will rise if you get water in there or fall if you burn it) and
the waterlevel.
If you are very uncertain, I'd drop by a good workshop (need not necessarily be
a LR one) and ask an experianced mechanic.

Cheers,
Franz

The family is heading over to the UK from 23 Nov to 3 Dec (mostly
Cornwall and London). I seem to recall that the Dunfold Land Rover Trust
is somewhere South of London. Is is true, or is my memory flakey? Aslo,
this wouldn't happen to be when they are open to the public, would it.

As a second question, does anyone know of any firms that have LRs
for hire. There will be 6 of us and Mom is thinking of renting a minivan.
My thoughts are that if we hav to rent something that big, we might was
well rent a D110. So does anyone have any info on LRs for hire?
