Dunno about Dunsfold, but make sure you check out the British motoring heritage
museum in Gaydon, about an hour's drive south of Solihull. Setup by the
remnants of British Leyland, their collection of unique Rovers is exceptional.
Also, try to get a tour of the factory. Just call Land Rover's number in the
FAQ and they'll out you in touch with the right person. Although they normally
require several month's advance notice, I told them I was an enthusiast over
from the 'states and they fitted me in the next day!

There's a chap who advertises in the back of LRO...don't have it in front of me.
Rates are relatively reasonable although if you're under 25 you'll need to get
a rider for insurance (talk to your insurance company here...

Have fun!

The Open Day was 5-6 October, They are based at Dunsfold in Surrey, about
10 miles south of Guildford on the map and South West of London. You could
call them on +44 (0)1483 200567 to enquire about visiting while you're over

There are a few adverts in LROI and some main dealers also hire vehicles,
although the only time I enquired about a 90 or 110 from my local dealer I
thought the price he quoted me was for BUYING it rather than hiring it (NOT
CHEAP!)

Hey John, you had to figure I'd throw my 2 cents in on this one.
First of all, have you set the pump timing and adjusted the valves? Of
course you have.
Second, is there any oil leaking out of say, the valve cover onto the
manifold? This may only show up on occaisions you describe.
You're not losing oil through the valve train, or else you'd see it more
on acceleration than on deceleration. I think.
Must be funky injectors. If you are lucky enough to have a spare set, I'd
suggest swapping them for the old ones and seeing what difference you
get.
Unfortunately, injectors are not serviceable by the home mechanic. You'll
have to pull them and send them out for cleaning and reconditioning if
needed.
Pump should not need any work.

kinda of miffed. i thought lulu (siia 88) was in pretty good

The real scary part is how tame the published photo actually is. Someone
at LRO must have a sense of decency. (I saw the Oct. LRO at the Mid
Atlantic this weekend.) During the "jacking up" Bob Morrison's motor drive
was blazing away, and I'm sure that somewhere in the four rolls of film
that his shot the real picture can be viewed...

Dear all,
We are going to be doing a 109 coil chassis on a Rover that
currently has a rust free chassis. The client does not want the old parts,
so I thought I'd toss them out to see if anyone needs them. Parts avail
will be chassis, springs *new fronts* shocks, axles, complete with brakes
etc. *but no diffs* standard rear not Salisbury. This is from a 109 NADA 6,
and all is great stuff. Chassis has never been patched, or had ANY rust
that I can find. Best offer. It will be avail. late this year.

better fuse and switch than supplied with lights. If in Naperville Illinois
use R and R electric to install phones, antennas, radios,CDs etc. I have no
monetary or other interest in these guys they just subcontract for the Local

Also has anybody insulated a D90 door with that expanding insulation foam
stuff and do you have to take the door panels off and protect wiring in door
with plastic before shooting the stuff in a hole??

They are little air valves on the top side of the axel hosing. They
allow the axel/diff to breath or change pressure under variuos
conditions. They are extended or relocated (using tubing) to keep them
out of harms way while wading around in water/mud.

The breather is a small brass fitting on top of the axle housing to the
left of the differentials. It's designed to allow the equalization of
pressure between the inside and outside of the axle case. This prevents
a build up of pressure inside the axle preventing oil from being forced
past the seals and gaskets, at the same time keeping grit outside.
> Stupider question #2: Why is there talk of extending the axle breather?

When wading in deep water the standard breather could allow water into
the axle case. Extending the breather is an attempt to keep the breather
above anticipated water levels.

The 4.0L, while derived from the original 3.5 V8 and subsequent 3.9/4.2 =

New castings, both block and heads. Block is reinforced with extra =
webbing and cross-bolted 4-bolt main caps. It is considerably stiffer at =

Yes, OBD2 emission and GEMS2 engine management with sequential EFI, =
knock sensor, and Coil-pack distributorless ignition are part of the =

powerplant and slightly better fuel consumption.

Current derivative is the 4.6 motor producing 225 BHP - the 4.0 makes =
182BHP in Disco and in 1997 NAS D90, and 190BHP in Range Rover 4.0SE.

For sale: used 109 chassis. Has "new" front springs, shocks, axles, brakes,
rear not Salisbury. Available later this year or immediately. Comes complete
with 5-door body, safari top and diesel engine. Some disassembly required.
Must remove front and rear diffs to meet "No diffs" requirements. I'd be
willing to do the removal work for a nominal fee, preferably after delivery.
$10,000, firm
Oops, it isn't a NADA 6, sorry, nevermind ;)
(Dave, et al; please note that this is meant as a humourous, even flippant
posting, although my wife might be pleased if I could get 10k for
Safari-SoGoodi. OTOH, what could I replace it with for 10k?)

Dear all,
We are going to be doing a 109 coil chassis on a Rover that
currently has a rust free chassis. The client does not want the old parts,
so I thought I'd toss them out to see if anyone needs them. Parts avail

Hi All.
I have read the thread about "Honoring Obligations" & it seems some
people have lost the reason for this list. I am on this list because I
enjoy LAND ROVERS & want/need incouragement when Mine breaks from more
experienced people. I thought we want to keep all of the LR's we can on
the road. I think the decision Steve made to atempt to rebuild not part
out his LR is noble. His decision was not made for his own profit & if he
is unable to rebuild his 109 it would be only right that he offer the roof
side to Mike first.
Is it so hard to understand someone being discouraged about there LR's
condision. Haven't all of us wanted to sell what we had in a moment of
dispair when our project needed one more expensive part.
I think Steve is doing the right thing by attempting to save one more
example of the LR's well enjoy.

Go for it Steve! Bring it back to life!

Subject: an unwitting chemistry experiment

This doesn't have much LR content, so if that's the only reason you read
the list skip this=C9

Recently someone asked how to remove a foul odor from their rover and
somebody else advised against mixing certain household chemicals
involving bleach. I can personally attest to that as being sound and
most excellant advice.

My mother was often in the habit of cleaning out the toilet by pouring a
few cups of bleach in the bowl. Gets it quite sparkly and sanitary.
However, if one were to not notice the strong smell of chlorine...well,
one morning, after a particularly heavy night of imbibing I was taking a
shower. My mother had already begun to clean the house, and as I was
soaping up, the urge hit. Now I had a dilemna. Do I get out of the
shower, or stay in? I agonized (literally) for a few moments, then
removed myself from the shower and went to the toilet. Well, to make
this scientific, urine may contain ammonia. Ammonia and chlorine, a
chemical component of bleach, creates a noxious gas. After inhaling the
chlorine gas from the foaming toilet I stumbled backwards, arms flailing,=

soapy feet slipping and sliding all over the place and spraying the whole=

bathroom with, well, you know what I'm trying to say, the whole time fighti=
ng
to keep on my feet and smashing my head and shoulder into the wall. I
think I burned all of the nostril hair out of my nasal canal.

The lesson here is be very careful of what you mix together. Some people=

(like myself) may assume that combining two cleaning agents would result in=

twice the cleaning power, but this is not so! Please read warning labels=

very carefully...and speaking of labels (here's the LR content you've
been looking for) I just received a letter from Land Rover advising me an=

important warning sticker was left off of the battery in my D90. The
sticker was included with the letter. I advise any D90 owner who has not=

received such notification to contact Land Rover of North America. I
suppose it's not really that big of a deal, but if ever you become a PO,
your future purchaser should have the benefit.

Hey Jan is this the same Renewed traditions that was spamming the list
earlier this year.

You know the mob that had a big dummy spit, when caught out over some.. ah
how can I put this.. "irregularities"

Didnt they basically call us all a bunch of wa*kers or some such thing.
(some of us got a personal response if I remember... Mike .....??)

If it is the same mob sounds like you are doing the right thing by having
no first hand experiences with them.

Of course if their lawyers are reading this I probably imagined it all,
and hey what would an Ozzie know about US suppliers anyway.

cheers

I've had quite a bit of stuff done there over the years. Previously, they

easy. And prices were reasonable, $.30 to $.60 per pound.

However, the last time a club member took a load there, he got ripped off

When I go into the woods, the thing that I am most afraid of is ... skunks.
Bears, bobcats, etc., I can deal with, but if my dog gets hosed by a skunk,
now that's trouble. I carry a bottle of "Skunk Stuff" in the Rover- seems
to be a synthetic wintergreen or some such - to eliminate the sent. (Yeah,
I know about tomato juice - once bought out a small grocery store.) I've
used this stuff on cat pee and it works wonders.

Failing that, you might want to try the yellow pages under fire services -

I've been buying and selling on the Internet and related services for many
years now, and very rarely have I ever had a problem. The only problems
I've ever encountered were getting a Donald Duck game in an already fragile
box packed simply in a flimsy envelope, getting a computer DOA, and
receiving a computer with duct tape all over the box (he had no idea the box
itself was collectible). This is all over several years of dealings.

Unfortunately, as a larger portion of the population gets on-line, a wider
variety of people will be represented. Including the less scrupulous of the
world. Still, I think that it is as safe as almost any other way of doing
business over long distances.

LRO's are a different story, however, being a subset of the general
populace. We all think that anyone who owns a Land Rover is inherently
better than non-LRO's, and that may very well be true. However, as in any
group as large as this list, there are bound to be a bad apple or two.
Terianne Wakeman can vouch for the fact that not all LRO's are nice guys.

So what to do? My advice is accept the fact that every once in a while,
something will go sour, but keep in mind all the times that it doesn't.
Don't let one deal gone wrong turn you off Land Rovers and their owners in
general.

Hi All,
I just got a new catalog from the J.C.Whitney (312-431-6102). In it there
is a spring compressor (Part# 14HG3351W) 22.99 . This is one for releasing
springs without removing the head.

Subject: Series III Oil Pressure Wiring/Heater Controls Wanted

Found out why the Smith's oil pressure gauge isn't working...it
isn't connected to anything. Found the green/brown stripe wire in the
engine bay connected to a two wire connector with a screw in it. There's
only one post on top of the oil filter container. Where does the oil
pressure gauge plug into? Any help appreciated.
I also realized yesterday that the PO had removed the heater and
vent controls from the left side of the dash. They relocated the heat
contol to under the steering wheel(why, I don't know)...anybody have a set
of controls kicking around I could purchase(or know anybody that does?)?

Thanks for the help! John

To Gary Baker and Mike Smith:
Although far from a major reason for subscribing to the list, I got plenty
of laughs from the recurring frame-for-sale post and all of the spin-offs:
a hellishly busy day at work, and whenever I was able to pop into my
office to check LR e-mail postings, there was another frame-for-sale
message. And eventually the protestations from Mike Smith that he wasn't
to blame. It was as though LUCAS himself had gotten into the web.
I hope that both of you see the humor in all of this and that you both
continue to post to the list. And Mike, I *know* that I will need parts
from Maine someday, so keep us posted!

When gasses heat up, they expand and pressure builds up in an enclosed
area. The axle housing is a confined space that heats up then a car is
driving. The higher pressure forces gear oil out the seals. An Axle
breather is designed to keep the pressure from building up.

Series cars have a little brass breather that utilizes a small metal ball
as a one way valve so that pressure can eacape but water can not enter.
With the oil fumes, the ball has a tendency to stick allowing pressure to
build up. Thats why many series owners have rear axle oil all over the back
of their cars. The system works as long as you keep the breathers unstuck
by cleaning them.

The newer series cars, AKA Defenders, have a tube without a check valve.
Obviously it does not have a valve to stick and it doesn't need to build up
some pressure in order to lift a metal ball. So pressure is always lower.
The front axle has a tube that goes up almost as high as the tbottom of
your radiator tank. The rear one goes into a hole in your chasis near the
top of the rear wheel arch. Your frame would need to fill with water for
your rear axle to intake water (always check fluids after deep wading as a
normal practice).

Both the Defender and series axle housings use the same threaded hole for
the breathers so they are interchangable. Many series owners put Defender
axle breathers on to lower pressure. i put them on my 109 and my pinion
seal leaks ceased immediatly.

Subject: New CluTCH & carb

Picked Alice up yesterday - after a new clutch and carb.
The garage ("The Thatched Garage") is about 30 miles away, and on the way,
the clutch gave up about 4 miles short...
Worn to the rivets apparantly.

Anyway, the new one gives a new meaning to "bite" - its like learning to
drive all over again...

They've also switched the carb. for a Zenith.
It idles fast - event with the hand-throttle set to nil. They had a look at
this, and reckon its the throttle linkage. Seemed to make sense at the time
(the mechanic held the linkage up (against the play in the linkage, and the
speed changed). Also, I have an annoying habit of stalling when
decelerating to a halt - which I think fits.

They suggested I put a spring on the link, to hold it up, at the carb.
end, and seemed to think it was a common problem. Anyone come across this?
Any neat solutions?

I guess I could always replace the whole linkage - they can't be too expensive.
