Sounds like you accidently unhooked the wires going to the headlights and starter motor.

Where did you hook the CB to? Did you hook it to the hot side, accessories side or the
ignition side of the switch? (A good place to hook the CB up is to the back side of the
lead lamp socket (inspection lamp socket))

Take a test light and test the switch to see if all positions in the switch are working.

Hope this helps,

I feel that Bill Adam's posting re. the ship wreck survivor and the sheep was
quite reprehensible. He might recall that Pierre was run off the LRO list in
disgrace in March of 1995 after posting a similarly disgusting tale entitled
"Pierre's Introduction to Off Road Tuition" describing in vivid detail his
experiences with a group of eight healthy young ladies. I printed that
posting at the time so I could refer to it occasionally - it was THAT
disgusting. Bill Adam's posting was followed by one by Bent Bohlers asking
"how it is possible to mount a high lift on a Rover?"
What depths of depravity have we sunk to? Let's stop posting this filth!
E-mail it to me first for review.

There is some crash test information
and data from real crashes at
   <URL:http://www.sofcom.com.au/4WD/onroad.html>
The Disco' performed "averagely" in crash tests, it
was a pre air-bag model and you would expect later ones
to do better. Toyota 80-series did best (4WD) and Nissan
Patrol was the worst big one. i.e. the newer the design the better.
Small 4WDs - not good!

According to a guy in accident research, most injuries
are down to "detail design faults" -
e.g. the (early) Disco grab handle can hit the passenger's head.
There is a lot of exposed metal in the cab of SI - SIII
(e.g. those early window catches!) but you could die in your sleep.

The Range Rover was the only 4WD to perform well
in data from *real crashes*

This is a SIIA with unmodified wiring right?

If that's the case, I believe the starter motor problem is
independent of ignition switch problems (separate circuit).
Did you disconnect the battery for the CB installation and
now have a loose/poor contact at one of the terminals? (a wild
guess).

Headlights are also independent of actual ignition. I'm not clear
on what portion of the ignition you connected to. Did you check for
loose connectors; there are a lot of spade connections close together
on the back of that unit - one might have been knocked loose.

Is there a particular reason you need/want to route the CB through the
ignition?

cheers,

Jeremy

OK so I can not spell, and Eudora does not have a built in spell checker.
I thought I establisted the former almost 11 years ago on the internet. I
once had an English comp instructor who told me he wanted to give me an A
for my composition skills but he couldn't because he wasn't sure if I had
to look at my driver's license to even spell my name correctly. Those were
the days before word home computers, and word processors with spell

Oh well at least I can keep my Rover on the road. Wish I could say the
same for my TR3.

All;
I am trying to remove the upper relay arm from the steering relay unit on
my 1972 Series lll to replace the tie rod ends which are on the tie rod
between the upper steering relay arm and the drop arm from the steering
linkage.
The arm moves upward about an eighth of an inch and stops..I have removed
the nut & bolt and sprayed it well.it does move by hand but even with a
puller it refuses to budge more than a little...
whats the trick in removing this...??
Thanks

Page 124 of the November issue of Four Wheeler magazine has a white D90
demonstrating a car top tent. These tents have been all the rage in
Europe for years. They have a fold out platform that instantly sets up
a tent, and provide a ladder on one side which also ads support. The
tent base is 5x7', queen size, and supports 450 lbs. For less
acrobatic camper on the move, page 126 shows a red Disco with a small
trailer camping attached. The single axle trailer's top also folds over
to create a queen-size platform, then a tent is attached which has a
stand-up entry on the other side with an enclosed waterproof floor. A
optional 9x12' attachment adds another room. The trailer is small
enough to go almost anywhere back road, depending on the skill of the
driver, as I have seen a similar rig on the Rubicon. Both camping
solutions are clever and functional designs for comfort on extended
 trips.

Later on page 50, Kai Serrano's Uni"moog" 406 is shown paddling through
one of the water/mud pits at the Hollister tank trap. Muddy water is
up to bumper in the front, and over the rear wheels. Then page 58 has
a tiny photo of the Mog winching.

From: Jeff & Laura Kessler <lmkessler@srnet.com>
Subject: Series Land Rover dealer

I have been following the imput/thread attempt to database the series LRs in
North America.

Here in Newport New Hampshire, we have a Dodge-Chrysler-Plymouth dealer,
Chase & Avery, that people tell me use to be a LR dealer. Actual I have
seen some series LRs still with Chase & Avery stickers on the back (with
that original paint job, do not expect these to be maintained as daily
drivers!).

Since I knew one of the owners I finally got around to ask about their LR
past. He refered me to his brother who told me the following history.

Chase & Avery was a Land Rover dealer from 1960 until 1974. In 1974 3 or 4
LRs were sold. Their best year was in 1967 with about 40 sold. At that
time LR was promoting the 109 pickup (yes pickup) with helped boost their
sales. (BTW, he knows of one 109 pickup still used for snow plowing by the
original owner. This LRO is in the same town that I work in and I have
never seen it! Time for a phone call?).

He figures to figure the total number of LRs sold by them, use an average of
about 20 per year. At one time Chase & Avery was the biggest (in sales) LR
dealer in the USA. On a couple of ocassions, the president of what ever
they called the import arm of LR back then, would come visit.

He told of one trip he took the president on in the Sunapee NH area one time
in the late 60s. There deep where nobody was expected, they came across a
local logger and his 109 pickup. This 109 had a vanity (license) plate on
it that read "OTTER". A picture of this LR and its plate ended up in a LR
calendar from that period.

When Chase & Avery moved to there current location in the late 80s, they
sent the remainder of their LR stuff to Atlantic British. All he has left
is that particular calender and a LR sign he is ready to sell.

The LR sign is a old style LR oval measuring about 4 ft by 2 1/2 ft. Made
of plastic, it is cracked. At one time, he says, a LR club in Virginia,
wanted to buy it but he still wanted it at the time. His price is $500. It
sound high to me and I have not seen it, but if anybody is interested, email
me directly and I will pass it on.

Our conversation was short, as we final caught up with each other around
dinner time. Thinking about the ease he had remembering 20+ years back,
there is probably much more to tell about LR dealing in those days. He did
say his off roading started with a '42 Ford (assembled) Jeep and even had a
Range Rover at one time. His current off roader is a new Jeep. He was
surprised to hear I take a RR off road (I did mention it is 9 years old).

I did ask about any record of serial numbers of the LRs they sold. Sorry,
they got tossed out after the required seven years of keeping them. (I
figured that the move in the 80s would of done them in if they were kept).

I hope this is of some interest.

I'll have the transmission and transfer case as well as their extras like

What is left of your Rover, except the looks and some of the leaks!?!

>> Everything is real filthy, so how do I protect the now open ports (like
exhaust ports) when trying to clean? I want to be able to store them for at
least a few years without degredation and seizing of parts.
That dirt has a very high preservative quality! Verrrry rich in minerals!!
Do *not* clean it off, besides, the cleaners you would probably use, would
put moisture where you don't want it. I can't think of a quicker way to seize
your rings, than to steam or pressure clean the motor, and then plug up the
ports.

I would do the following, maybe others can add something:
1. Drain the old engine oil, maybe even rinse the innards with a little
diesel or kerosene. Used motor oil is acidic.
2. I'd have the valve cover off and remove the rocker arm assembly, so some
of the springs aren't compressed. Of course after twenty-thirty years, it's a
toss-up whether it makes any difference. Wrap the rockers up in some of that
anti-corrosive paper from something else you bought. You *did* save those,
right?
3. Make some kind of cradle for the motor to set in so it doesn't fall over
on your foot when you least expect it. Stow it where you can get to the crank
nut with a socket for an occasional turning.
4. Take off the clutch and remove the disc. Put the cover back on.
5. Remove the spark plugs and liberally pump marvel mystery oil or even WD40
into the cylinders. Put the plugs in just a turn or so to keep bugs out.
6. Seal the ports with cloth balls, stuffed in them. Tape is too messy on the
un-do.
That's about all I can think of right now, anyone else?
Cheers!!

I have one of those signs right here on the wall facing my PC. It is yellow
with green lettering and it was originally in West Brome, Quebec, at Corry
Motors, in the Eastern Townships. Just for figures, Corry Motors delivered
some 300+ Land Rovers to the Quebec Hydro to develop the James Bay project
in the late 60's, early 70's.

Mine is not cracked, and I definetely would'nt pay 500$ U.S for it. It is
pretty nice though, butI still need to find a neon light to go behind. Right
now, it is Lucas-powered :-)

I might bring it to a rally, some day...

It looks like a late IIA, indeed a 69'. Therefore, the switch is like the
one on the Series III. It shouldn't have the big starter button under the
dash and is fitted as a solenoid. The switch does have something to do with
the starter motor. (I think-correct me anyone?)

I have been looking for a LR for about a month, and reading from this group
for about the same time, when it happend, I had to buy one. Its a 1972

noticed a few problems.

1
While driving it back I had to break very sharply, as I did I found the

When first starting the engine there is what looks like white smoke coming
out of the exhaust, this seems to pulse on and off for a bit and then
vanishes.

4
If I rest my foot lightly on the clutch pedal, it slowly goes down to the
floor and then needs a few pumps before it is normal again.

5
I have also found that sleeping is now impossible, I can only sit up in bed
muttering "What have I done!!!"

If anyone has any ideas how I can solve some of these problems, the please
tell me because it might help to solve the last one.
