Sounds like you accidently unhooked the wires going to the headlights and starter motor. Where did you hook the CB to? Did you hook it to the hot side, accessories side or the ignition side of the switch? (A good place to hook the CB up is to the back side of the lead lamp socket (inspection lamp socket)) Take a test light and test the switch to see if all positions in the switch are working. Toyota 80-series did best (4WD) and Nissan Patrol was the worst big one. i.e. the newer the design the better. Small 4WDs - not good! According to a guy in accident research, most injuries are down to "detail design faults" - e.g. the (early) Disco grab handle can hit the passenger's head. If that's the case, I believe the starter motor problem is independent of ignition switch problems (separate circuit). Did you disconnect the battery for the CB installation and now have a loose/poor contact at one of the terminals? (a wild guess). Headlights are also independent of actual ignition. I'm not clear on what portion of the ignition you connected to. These tents have been all the rage in Europe for years. They have a fold out platform that instantly sets up a tent, and provide a ladder on one side which also ads support. The tent base is 5x7', queen size, and supports 450 lbs. For less acrobatic camper on the move, page 126 shows a red Disco with a small trailer camping attached. The single axle trailer's top also folds over to create a queen-size platform, then a tent is attached which has a stand-up entry on the other side with an enclosed waterproof floor. A optional 9x12' attachment adds another room. The trailer is small enough to go almost anywhere back road, depending on the skill of the driver, as I have seen a similar rig on the Rubicon. Both camping solutions are clever and functional designs for comfort on extended trips. Later on page 50, Kai Serrano's Uni"moog" 406 is shown paddling through one of the water/mud pits at the Hollister tank trap. Muddy water is up to bumper in the front, and over the rear wheels. Then page 58 has a tiny photo of the Mog winching. Date: Sat, 5 Oct 1996 22:34:13 -0500 (EST) From: Jeff & Laura Kessler <lmkessler@srnet.com> Subject: Series Land Rover dealer I have been following the imput/thread attempt to database the series LRs in North America. Here in Newport New Hampshire, we have a Dodge-Chrysler-Plymouth dealer, Chase & Avery, that people tell me use to be a LR dealer. Actual I have seen some series LRs still with Chase & Avery stickers on the back (with that original paint job, do not expect these to be maintained as daily drivers!). Since I knew one of the owners I finally got around to ask about their LR past. He refered me to his brother who told me the following history. Chase & Avery was a Land Rover dealer from 1960 until 1974. In 1974 3 or 4 LRs were sold. Their best year was in 1967 with about 40 sold. At that time LR was promoting the 109 pickup (yes pickup) with helped boost their sales. (BTW, he knows of one 109 pickup still used for snow plowing by the original owner. This LRO is in the same town that I work in and I have never seen it! Time for a phone call?). He figures to figure the total number of LRs sold by them, use an average of about 20 per year. At one time Chase & Avery was the biggest (in sales) LR dealer in the USA. On a couple of ocassions, the president of what ever they called the import arm of LR back then, would come visit. He told of one trip he took the president on in the Sunapee NH area one time in the late 60s. There deep where nobody was expected, they came across a local logger and his 109 pickup. This 109 had a vanity (license) plate on it that read "OTTER". A picture of this LR and its plate ended up in a LR calendar from that period. When Chase & Avery moved to there current location in the late 80s, they sent the remainder of their LR stuff to Atlantic British. All he has left is that particular calender and a LR sign he is ready to sell. The LR sign is a old style LR oval measuring about 4 ft by 2 1/2 ft. Made of plastic, it is cracked. At one time, he says, a LR club in Virginia, wanted to buy it but he still wanted it at the time. His price is $500. It sound high to me and I have not seen it, but if anybody is interested, email me directly and I will pass it on. Our conversation was short, as we final caught up with each other around dinner time. Thinking about the ease he had remembering 20+ years back, there is probably much more to tell about LR dealing in those days. He did say his off roading started with a '42 Ford (assembled) Jeep and even had a Range Rover at one time. His current off roader is a new Jeep. He was surprised to hear I take a RR off road (I did mention it is 9 years old). I did ask about any record of serial numbers of the LRs they sold. Sorry, they got tossed out after the required seven years of keeping them. (I figured that the move in the 80s would of done them in if they were kept). I hope this is of some interest. I want to be able to store them for at least a few years without degredation and seizing of parts. That dirt has a very high preservative quality! Verrrry rich in minerals!! Do *not* clean it off, besides, the cleaners you would probably use, would put moisture where you don't want it. I can't think of a quicker way to seize your rings, than to steam or pressure clean the motor, and then plug up the ports. I would do the following, maybe others can add something: 1. Drain the old engine oil, maybe even rinse the innards with a little diesel or kerosene. Used motor oil is acidic. 2. I'd have the valve cover off and remove the rocker arm assembly, so some of the springs aren't compressed. Of course after twenty-thirty years, it's a toss-up whether it makes any difference. Wrap the rockers up in some of that anti-corrosive paper from something else you bought. You *did* save those, right? 3. Make some kind of cradle for the motor to set in so it doesn't fall over on your foot when you least expect it. Stow it where you can get to the crank nut with a socket for an occasional turning. 4. Take off the clutch and remove the disc. Put the cover back on. 5. Remove the spark plugs and liberally pump marvel mystery oil or even WD40 into the cylinders. Put the plugs in just a turn or so to keep bugs out. 6. Seal the ports with cloth balls, stuffed in them. Tape is too messy on the un-do. That's about all I can think of right now, anyone else? This also happens when I release the accelerator. 3 When first starting the engine there is what looks like white smoke coming out of the exhaust, this seems to pulse on and off for a bit and then vanishes. 4 If I rest my foot lightly on the clutch pedal, it slowly goes down to the floor and then needs a few pumps before it is normal again. 5 I have also found that sleeping is now impossible, I can only sit up in bed muttering "What have I done!!!"
