From: Easton Trevor <TEASTON@DQC2.DOFASCO.CA> Subject: Speedo Erraticism Date: Fri, 04 Oct 96 08:07:00 DST Jeremy Bartlett writes of a speedo that is erratic. I had the same problem on the way to the Down East this year after fitting a new cable and cover. 0 to 110mph in 3 seconds!!!. Try reversing when the staionary reading is 20 mph, does it go back to zero? My problem was due to overzealous lubrication of the new cable. The grease extruded into the speedo mechanism and interfered with the proper eddy current operation. Grease is stronger than eddy currents and just grabs the aluminium disc and pegs the reading. The initial erratic operation occurs as it grabs and releases then when a good gob has biult up it just turns to the stop as soon as you move forward. Remove speedo. Twist off bezel and remove glass. Take two screws out of back and all is revealed. Wash grease from mechanism. Clean out top end of cover and cable. Lubricate throughout with light oil (WD40). Replace and you'll have a needle so steady you think something else is wrong. ------------------------------[ <- Message 3 -> end | Table of Contents | <- Digest 961005 -> Archive Index | <- Browser -> ]

I have the Smiths split screen 2-in-1 temp and oil pressure guage (which has never been calibrated) in my 1963 88" and while on the highway, my temp creeps up. I have washed out the fins on the rad (I drive in knee deep mud fairly regularly) and this helps a bit. I just recently ran some radiator purge through the cooling system and this seems to have helped as well. Off road, it never heats up. My temp guage goes into the red at 100 degrees Celsius, this seems kind of conservative to me. I've never had any problems from the heat, only extremely high guage readings... Date: Fri, 4 Oct 96 9:36:41 -0400 From: "Adams, Bill" <badams@usia.gov> Subject: Important Land Rover content.... (Forwarded from the Brit-Iron motorcycle list, with slight editing...) A >Land-Rover< mechanic decided to go on holiday with a cruise service to improve his chances of finding a girlfriend. The first night out, he awoke to find water in his cabin; the ship was sinking fast! He made his way to the main deck and leaped into the darkness of the frothing sea. Fortunately, he managed to make contact with a floating beam, to which he frantically clung. The next morning, there was no other human in sight. The only living creature was a small Terrier, which also clung to the floating beam. Together they floated for two days and nights, and finally floated to land. Investigating, the mechanic discovered they were on an island with no other inhabitants. Resigning himself to his fate, he built a lean-to and planted some vegetables. He and the dog spent the days walking on the beach, always on the lookout for a passing ship to rescue them. These days made the two of them inseperable. One day, they hiked up over a hill to a valley beyond, to find, to their great surprise, a grazing herd of sheep. At the sight and smell of the man, the sheep ran into the dense underbrush. One sheep did not run; a creamy coloured ewe. She looked at the man and the man couldn't help but notice the smoothness of her coat and the dewy softness of her eyes. Suddenly he was overcome with loneliness, as he recalled that he had not had female companionship for several months, now. "What the hey", he said to himself, "no one else is around." He had never been attracted to animals in a physical sense before, but he remembered hearing some of his customers joking half seriously about their conquests. So, he loosened his belt and approached the ewe. She baaaed softly and bent her head to the green grass. Just as the mechanic was about to mount the ewe , the Terrier started yipping, and this completely destroyed the man's lustful mood. Slowly, he and the faithful, but jealous, dog made their way back to camp. That night, after a hearty meal of eggplant and bananas, he was laying in his bed and visions of the beautiful ewe filled his thoughts. Looking across the dying campfire, he saw the dog asleep. Exercising extreme caution and quiet, he arose and tiptoed away from the camp. The night was dark, and clouds obscured the stars, but he remembered exactly where the path lay. Coming over the hill, he saw a shaft of moonlight pouring through a hole in the cloudcover, like a spotlight at the theatre, and the beam was directed, as if by fate itself, right on the ewe, who was waiting expectantly. She looked over her shoulder at the mechanic and flicked her long eyelashes, again lowing the bewitching "baaaaa." The man could hardly restrain himself. Rushing to the feast, he dropped his trousers and prepared to engage in a physical act of love with the amorous ewe! Just as he was about to avail himself of her otherwordly treat, "Yip Yip Yip!" The damn dog had awakened, figured out where he had gone, and followed him! The mood was again dispelled, so the man sadly put himself back together and slowly trudged home. The next few days, he tried to get the ewe out of his mind. The dog watched his every move. One day, while on their daily stroll on the beach, he espied a woman lying in the surf. Rushing to her, he saw she was unconscious, but he detected a slight heartbeat. He opened her lovely mouth and proceeded to give her mouth-to-mouth resuscitation. Her eyelids slowly quivered and opened, and she blinked and looked at him. She was a vision of absolute loveliness: her hair was glossy black, her eyes were deep green , her teeth were perfect, and the wet negligee she wore enhanced her perfect, luscious body. "Where am I? Who are you" she asked, querously. He told her how he had been shipwrecked a year ago on the island, and how he had just found her and brought her back to life. Her lovely eyes glistened as she she moaned and threw her arms around his neck. "You lovely man! You saved my life! I thought all was lost! I will do anything for you! Anything in the world, just tell me!" The man blushed a bit, dug his toes in the sand uncomfortably, and looked upon this picture of beauty. Suddenly, his demeanor changed from shyness to slyness, and he said coyly, "Would you watch my dog for about an hour?" Have a great weekend! This will adversely affect on-road performance ( how about 80-90 km/hr top speed ?) If you are trying to LOWER the ratio for more power off-road, why not try driving your off-road area in low range first and see how that works with the taller tires. From: ChrisF6724@aol.com Date: Fri, 4 Oct 1996 11:41:07 -0400 Subject: Stock oil filter and engine swap... I have a question about oil filters and stock components... I am currently finishing up a engine swap. Now that the stock engine is pulled out, I noticed that my oil filter seems to look wierd. What it looks like is a blue canister with a tappered end and a large bolt at the base... Is this the original stock filter? I also noticed that the distributer has a triangular base, but the block looks like it was maybe supposed to be round. Is the distributer stock? Someone earlier (several months ago) wondered how I was going to work the exhaust around the stock steering components. We had to use a exhaust manifold that lets out in the center. I'll find out what it was from.. The stock manifold on the Chevy V6 normally exhausts towards the rear, and it will not fit in the tight space. I know the mechanic really had to search to find this manifold. Several different header's where tried and did not fit... I am contemplating writing up an article and scanning photos of the swap. Does anyone know where I might post it so that others following in my path might be able to use it as a reference? Another question: Since I can't find a serious buyer for my leftover parts, I think I'll store them for future sale or conversion back to stock. What should I do to preserve them for storage? I'll be storing the engine and all it's components like cooling system, electrical system, air filter,... Also, I'll have the transmittion and transfer case as well as their extras like parking brake,... There will also be gauges, but I wouldn't think they would need much preparation.... Everything is real filthy, so how do I protect the now open ports (like exhaust ports) when trying to clean? I want to be able to store them for at least a few years without degredation and seizing of parts. They will be stored in a "Tuff shed" in my backyard, so they will be protected from the elements, but not from temperature changes (considation problems?). Date: Fri, 04 Oct 1996 08:39:57 -0700 From: jouster@rocket.com (John Ousterhout) Subject: speedos, fault equilibrium theory Just a reminder to all about the theory of Fault Equilibrium, as applied to Land Rovers. Assume a Land Rover has a Fault Equilibrium Level of 5. If 5 items need repaired, and I fix one, the Fault Level will be 4 and therefore in a non-equilibrated state. This will create both static and dynamic stresses that will cause something else to fail, returning the system to equilibrium. If a 6th item fails, no corrective action is necessary for one of the failed items to correct itself, HOWEVER, this is an opportunity for the observant owner/mechanic (who must also be able to count to six, one-handed) to interrupt the dynamics and repair one faulty item directly. This avoids the case of a trivial item being corrected. I advise using such opportunities to affect repairs on safety items first, functional items second, and comfort items (if any) last. Note that total replacement of all Lucas wiring and electrical items only decreases the total vehicle equilibrium fault level by one. Yes, I notice an equilibrium level, but there's also a kind of half-life too. Eg. a "major" fault will be once every few months. In this case, bad electrics or bad carb. (my current problem - and if not, my clutch is slipping *as well*) Along with that, there's overheating (major, but solved quickly, so minor bar 1 week), gearstick, gauges, heater pipes, paintwork, oil, etc, etc. I'm wibbling, but its Friday afternoon, lunch was liquid, and I'm now about to move house. From: ChrisF6724@aol.com Date: Fri, 4 Oct 1996 18:19:53 -0400 Subject: Engine swap update.. Just got back from my mechanic.... It's not ready yet :-( The "good" news is that he decided that the driveline angles on the rear would probably be too extreme, so he's replacing the rear end with a custom Ford 9". Aftermarket parts will be easier to find as well as relieving my fears of constantly snapping axles. Hopefully, he will be able to match the front end's gear ratios, and if not, he will also replace the front end. All this for no extra charge :-) So, add to my "for sale or storage" parts list a Rover rear end and a couple of 16" steel wheels (if the front is replaced as well, add the front end w/ Warn locking hubs, brake system, and 3 more steel wheels w/ BFG AT's). Add to my want list a rear spare tire mount.. For those of you who can't remember what I'm doing: It started with the simple thought that I'd like some more power and a newer engine (preferably a fuel injected V6 or V8). Talked to a mechanic (and a few people on this list) and realized that the stock transmittion would not take the power of a V6 with any grace. Ok, I'll swap the tranny as well.. It didn't stop there because adapters to mate the stock transfer case to a new tranny were more expensive than a new transfer case (not to mention severely limiting my transmittion choices). Finally, a choice was made to install a "built" late model Chevy vortec V6, a four-speed automatic transmition (700r4) and a NP 208 transfer case. Also, we needed to replace the cooling system and electrical system. With this choice, I would have about 220 hp, and great gearing for highway or off-road. We've run across a few problems; exhaust manifold, driveline angles, mating stock components with new, PO's "modifications", etc... and I'm expecting to find more... So far, the process has taken a little over 5 months, and I'm expecting it will take another month in the shop to iron out the obvious bugs (probably another "in & out of the shop" year to get everything working together in harmony) not to mention stripping everything "Rover" out of the vehicle (am I going to tear up at old oil spots?)... I would not recommend for anyone to do this who uses the car a primary vehicle, or a limited wallet (budget about $10-12k), or a lack of patience, or...... Looking back, I think I could have lived with the lack of power vs the frustration of this engine swap (especially since getting a twin turbo 300zx to satisfy my speed cravings). Oh well, live and learn. I had it delivered from Tucson this spring, with the intent on using it to replace the poor unit under a '67 NADA in my garage. Upon comparing frames, I have decided that moving engine and tranny mounts, and a cross member, would be more of a challange than I wish to tackle. This frame is in excellent condition. You will find Nison, Perkins & all knds of diesls where Land Rover powerplants used to be. There are probably as high a proportion of swaps in South Africa and Austraila.
