Mosey on over to your nearest auto parts store and ask them for a donut
ring (might be called something else in NZ). Think of these as a ball
joint for exhaust systems. Shaped roughly like this looking from the
side.

They're made of something that seems like clay and is heat resistant
(obviously). The tapered ends fit in the manifold and downpipe and allow
for some misalignment. The bore size of your manifold/downpipe should be
all you need to the the parts people.

Just thought I'd extend an invite to anyone traveling by, going to/from
Stowe. We love to get LR company. We're midway between I-89 and Rte. 100,
outside Bethel, Vt., about 55 miles from Stowe, on an old farm.. As always,
breakdown assistance is offered. (802-747-1341, leave message, I'll be paged
and will call right back). Also, if anyone finding themselves hereabouts also
needs their windshield _repaired_, just let me know (Superglass Windshield

Subject: Reliability information on 1990 to 1993 Range Rover County

Thanks for your time.

I was told this was the forum to ask my questions.

Please send responces directly to me.

my first questions follow:

I am considering the purchase of a 1991 to 1993 Range Rover County but,
I have yet to find any substantial information on the auto. As this
will be my daily driver, I need to know if there are any nagging
problems (electrical or mech.) with the vehicle.

In other words "whats the dirt?"

I've heard that the Lucus electrical system was put into the auto up to
some year (which yr. I'm not sure) and could be a problem. (true/false
& which yr.)

I also need to know what the vehicle and engine's life expectancy
is.

What type of work I can do myself (alternator, water pump) or is it best
left to professionals.

Can some or many of the auto’s parts be switched out with American part
from a local parts house?

Your help will be greatly appreciated.

:-)

Subject: Dormobiles!

Dear all, and esp. Quintin Aspin,
After having owned 5 Land Rover 109 Dormobiles, having 2 at the
moment, and various parts from them, I have to beg you NOT TO SCREW WITH AN
ORIGINAL LR DORMOBILE! You have to remember that only about 200 to 500 of
these Rovers were ever made! I have sold about 5 since ECR came about, and
yes, they are hard to sell, but they DO sell, and every time I've sold one
it has been to a very nice person who loves them to death! Don't chase
after the might dollar so much that you forget that this is supposed to be
fun, and good for Rovers. Yes, everyone wants a 5 door, but is it worth the
price, you'll get no satisfaction, just money. I enjoy the fact that ECR
brings Rovers back from the dead, and you should enjoy the fact that you
have a rare one, and should pass it on to a fellow Rover fan who will have
a great time using or restoring it. The guy from British Bulldog pulled 2
apart last year, to make them into stock 5 doors, do you want to be in that
category? Fotunately I was able to buy the guts of one, and hand it out to
needy owners of real Dormobiles across the US, a lot of whom are on this
list. Being the US rep. for the Dormobile Owners' Club, I have to ask you
to look more at Rovers, and less at money. *Could possibly be the reason
why I'm not rich, but I'm having a great time, and that is more important!*
If you do go ahead and take apart one more, please give me a call
or email, I have a standing list of real Dormobile owners and the parts
that they need, to make their machines more complete. Or at least send me
the chassis VIN, and the Martin Walters VIN, so I can keep the
documentation correct with the Club.
At any rate, I know Dormobiles have a small following, but what
would be your reaction if I was going to take a Pink Panther apart to make
a pick up?
What is the price? I may buy it just to keep it in one
piece...email me direct.
Thanks, the US rep. for the Dormobile Owners' Club.

this Dormobile too is far from perfect as the only original Dormobile parts
are the roof assembly, the rear seats, a few empty brackets and straps, and
the front seat tracks. NO cabinets. NO front seats, NO Martin Walker vin
plate OR badges, and NO awnings or accessories. I too enjoy selling Rovers to
people who will love them and take care of them. I try to keep track of the

All,

Just thought I would let you know the outcome of my stubborn bolt. Al Richer
and I drilled and drilled until we felt comfortable that we could insert a
drift. The drift we had was slightly too big. Getting the flow.... He ground
down the drift and started to hit the drift with a mallet !!!! Out cam the
bolt, rusty but out. BUT ..... the drift got stuck !!!!!

We had to grind the drift down and re-drill the drift out !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Anyway, I now have the Southdown Tank amour fitted to the front of the RR.
Looks good and hides all that steering gear that hangs down and is just
begging to be bashed by a rock.

That does not mean that they are registered as Land Rover 101s with the

Subject: Alternator Mounting

Re. Mounting an alternator to the 2.25L engine . . . use the LR mount and
alter the alternator rather than use an adaptor/mounting bracket (a PIA to fit
and adjust and added, unnecessary expense). An 80+- Delco with internal
regulator (run all the plushmobile stuff you dreamed of and lights and more)
is readily available and inexpensive compared to the Lucas that fits the
existing bracket (more amps as well). Measure the distance between the
mounting bracket on the 2.25L and remove with a "hack" (don't) saw or sawsall
the required amount of the Delco mount from the end pointed to the bulkhead
(it is more than strong enough to withstand the loss . . . just take your time
with the cuts) . . . if you overcut shim with washers as needed. If the
pulley does not line up just right, overcut and shim with washers front and
back to line the whole thing up. If the LR dynamo bolt is frozen, cut it off
without fear and buy a universal mounting bolt from the nearest parts store.
Measure for a new belt and order a Gates (x2 with one for the spares bag) of
the proper length (the frame will be there, so be aware of engine tip and
rebound when final belt tension is reached). Retain and use the dynamo belt
tension adjuster bracket . . . tighten just enough to keep the alternator
spinning without "squeel" . . . too much and the bearings will go before their
time. As I've said before, not "rocket science", just a bit of old fashioned
"Yankee Inginuity" and some time with the warm beer/ale (respect for Mr. Lucas
who wired the Brit Frig) to pay homage to the inventor(s) of this beast called
a Series Land Rover we all "Love/Hate" with a passion that has no equal . . .
well perhaps one . . . but "kids" may read the list.

Homage, tempered by the greatest lady of them all (personal opinion . . . none
the less true) who has convinced me that j*p comfort is not all bad on road
and is convinced that off road the Land Rover is the only way (afraid to
"destroy" the j*p "plushmobile" . . . the transport of her dreams).

So Quinton,
I too am a spotted owl opps I mean Dormobile fan and would prefer the car
to go to someone who would try to locate parts & restore the car. But I am
also an oppertunist.

IF the car does change tops, I am very interested in those empty brackets
and straps.

There is some one in my area who is not wired, named Eric Mills. He has an
orginal Dormobile & I believe he is missing a rear seat. Unfortunatly I do
not have a phone number for him.

Hi All,
After looking into the many engine transplants written up in both LRO & LRW

sale. I hope to keep the list updated on my efforts to install a 1980 3.8

Spent all the weekend lifting the floor, replacing the gearstick + putting
everything back including paint and sealant. I had serious wobble/grubscrew
problems, hence the gearstick replacement. Also decided to replace the
bracket with the special one with a switch for a reversing light. Adding
reversing lights is something for the future, but the switch and wires
are in place.
Well, nearly all the weekend - I did spend a little time in a queue at the
Albert Hall, but we did get in, so all was worth it (US readers: reference
THE "Last Night of the Proms" - more British than a Land Rover).

Anyway, driving to work today, the stick feels beautiful, as it were, *but*
I can't select REVERSE!! When bolting the bracket back on, I checked that
everything seemed to be moving. Perhaps I missed something, but the stick
was actuating the switch fine. Perhaps the switch sticks out too much
(it came with one nut, so the switch is flush against the bracket ATM).
Any other suggestions at what to look for? A miracle solution that
saves me lifting the floor and replacing all the sealant would be nice,
but I doubt its possible somehow!

Luckily, I've parked at work in a "drive-through" space (taking up 4 places!
:-)) ), and the drive at home is on a nice slope that I can back off.

Cheers
