Im still trying to get my S2a =B466 to running condition - well it is really running but i have a few things left to worry about. The one that is bothering me now - is the charge/ignition light on the "dashboard" - it wont go out - so the dynamo is most certainly not charging the battery!! - clever guy i am!! I have tested the dynamo as prescribed in the Haynes manual - it looks OK - also the wiring going from it to the regulator/cut-out (what ever!) - it also looks ok - though the dynamo voltage reading was a bit high (according to Haynes) - 19.5V - Now Haynes says i should check the regulator - but i cant see anything wrong with it (i may be blind!! - who knows?) - Does anyone know if i can skip the regulator to test if anything happens??? - Any suggestions at all?? Also!! - unrelated! - when i push the accelerator pedal a bit quickly - the engine seems to "sufficate" - and kill it self!! - probably ignition timing - but i dont seem to able to fix it - well not with the timing screw at the distributor cap anyway!! - any suggestions??? I have two petrol SIII's and will either change them over to unleaded heads, or simply shove diesels in both. The increased fuel economy of the diesel would pay for the conversion in a year in the one vehicle, and maybe two years in the other. I suspect the proposed ban would affect us rover owners rather less than other classic car owners. The only thing that won't fit is the windshield since the 110 windshield is about 2 inches taller than the 109 windshield. You would have to modify your 110 roof to take all the hardware from the 109 roof. Cheers Mike Loiodice 166 W. Marin Faure) Subject: RE: Hot Diesel: White smoke=possible trouble Back in the late 1960s, I worked on a ranch in Colorado before going to college. We had a diesel road grader than was first started on gasoline, and then switched over to diesel fuel when the cylinders were warmed up. I remember when we would first make the switch, the exhaust was almost pure white for a minute or two. Doesn't relate to the Land Rover, but thought it might be interesting. A white exhaust in a gas engine generally means coolant is getting into a combustion chamber, either through a faulty head gasket or a crack in a cylinder wall, which is what happened to me once with my Ford F-250. However, I have seen diesel cement trucks started in the morning at a plant on my way to work, and I've noticed that the exhaust is sometimes quite thick and is a milky white or light gray. Obviously this goes away fairly soon, as I don't see it coming from any of the trucks on the road. Try a tank of high test petrol with a good dose of fuel treatment that claims to remove carbon deposites and watch your guages to make sure the engine is not running too hot (if it is check your cooling system- rad level, belts, thermostat, hoses, etc.). If this doesn't clear up the problem start into the mechanical adjustments others have mentioned. ------------------------------[ <- Message 10 -> end | Table of Contents | <- Digest 960728 -> Archive Index | <- Browser -> ]

From: harincar@internet.mdms.com Date: Sat, 27 Jul 1996 15:01:17 -0500 Subject: zenith mixture screw Yet another stupid carb question. I'm still fighting with an over-rich mixture, the screw never did seem to do anything. So I have the carb (3 years old) all apart on my bench. I was looking at the port that the mixture screw goes in to, and it seems that its just a port fo additional air to enter. True? Now, I just recently bought a new bleed screw. Both the screw that was in there and the new one have a slot in them, but in both slots there is a piece of greenish plastic. It would seem to me, that this bit of plastic is defeting the purpose of the screw - i.e. to allow air in along the screw body. Why else would it be there (the slot, that is)? I had originally though that the screw controlled *fuel*. Any insight? Send a copy to me, too, since I don't really trust the major right now. Date: Sun, 28 Jul 1996 05:22:29 -0500 From: hilltop <hilltop@advantage.ca> Subject: Re: Series I 80" or 86" Hello Simon and crazy Mrs. In regards to a S1 , 80 or 86; is this a hobby or a means of transportation? I have been driving one on and off for my daily transportation for 5 years now. It's not for the faint of heart or the man in a hurry. Needs alot of muscle in the leg and the arms to stop and steer. Maximum speed it can be driven at for extended distance by any person with a sympathetic ear for engine components is about 45 m/h on the speedo, with 32" tyres this gives me about 50 m/h actual speed. I don't know what newer Rovers do - S1's don't accelerate they gather speed. Many people argue they were built for agriculture, more of a tractor than a vehicle; I wouldn't go that far. Every bad thing you've heard about the heating is true. On the other hand, it's given me lots of priceless moments, experience, freedom to be impulsive and joy. Off road it's nearly unstopable with the right tyres. I've run mine for all this time on unleaded petrol. Last week I had the head off, the exhast valves looked fairly pitted but the seats looked great. On both of the two 1997cc engined I've had apart number 4 exhast valve is BURNT, 3 is bad, 2 is O.K. and number 1 is great. Might be something to watch for. In the 5 plus years I've owned mine I've only seen one other S1 and I bought it for parts, needless to say you really stand out in a S1. In short, think model T ford with 4WD. From: Wdcockey@aol.com Date: Sat, 27 Jul 1996 20:06:58 -0400 Subject: Diesels This is a repost from two days ago. I think the original found a black hole. We had a demonstration ride in a new RR by LR Experience at Billing on Friday. When we mentioned we worked for some of the competition, the reply was along the lines of "we have no competitors, only those who think they compete". The engineer who took us around mentioned that while the BMW 6 cyl in the RR was very pleasant on road, and compotent off road, the TDi was better offroad. Said he had been "caught out" on his first circut of the day and had stalled the engine by not downshifting. Blamed it on demonstrating a TDi 90 the previous day. Another interesting comment was that he had experience with Ford trucks in Borneo while arranging the Camel Trophey, and they were very strong but tended to lift a wheel. BTW, we got the demonstration ride with just a polite inquiry. Very nice folks.
