I don't abuse people that often any more, but:
this is about the most stupid request I've ever seen.
	(don't bother to ask again)

either the security officer is clueless or
you guys really need a better mail system.

the line of '-' is a standard reply seperator for digests and will not be
changed (in the old days some of those were standard column 1 pagination
controls !)

If people actually did what you requested, it would also break the digesting
software, and I'm not happy about having to modify that stuff, 'cause it
is more than a bit crufty.

Work on changing your installation, not the rest of the known universe.

Thanks,
 -B

You are obviously not prepared for the ownership of a series vehicle. Go
out and sign up to volunteer 12 hours a week at the charity of your choice.
Volunteer to do the newsletter of your favorite club, the bigger the
better. Adopt at least 3 children and 2 animals. (fish do not count.)
Start a strict daily regimen of 3 hours of excercise followed by 2 of
meditation. Take on a second job, preferably one that features lots of
lifting of heavy objects and crawling around in the dirt. Mud wrestling
combined with stump removal would be good. Donate blood twice a day.
(Foresis method is preferable, especially if you plan to work on the
vehicle yourself.)

Do this for at least 6 months before starting your search for a vehicle,
and prepare to stop all of it as soon as you complete your purchase, as you
will no longer have time for any of it.

Ahhh, the use of the ">" character in the leftmost column to
denote quoted text goes back well over a decade. If your
software barfs at this, it is either incredibly ancient and
needs immediate replacement to bring it into the 1970's, or
if more recent needs to be erased and replaced with something
real since it is an utter piece of garbage and waste of disc
	space.

Dashes have been used by software packages (digesters, .sig lines
apears in column 1 in uuencoded messages with all your naughty
symbols, etc.) for many, many years too.

If your software set-up is having problems with these characters
in the leftmost column, all I can say it that your installation
is going to have a real fun time dealing with traffic from the
Internet, or gated traffic from a host of other networks. Put
it this way. Scrapping your entire software and hardware
infrastucture costs pennies in relation to the cost of people
adapting software to try and make your security officer happy.

While you are at it, replace the security officer for making such
an utterly dumb suggestion. It demonstates a clear lack of
understanding about the environment inwhich he is working.

This message is framable, or at least is going to be going places.
Know a lot of people that will get one hell of a chuckle from it.

Subject: Mark Kraieski's accident

Hi there Mark - you are probably sick of people saying it could have been
worse etc etc. Just to let you know I understand the feeling, as I rolled
our 110 in Zambia nearly two years ago swerving to avoid a particularly
horrible pothole in the road. In correcting to avoid going off the road, I
nearly ran over people standing on the opposite side, and so corrected again
and in the process over she went, 360 degrees ending up with back wheels in
a ditch, writing off our roof top tent, stainless steel roof rack, side
awning squashing the roof nearly flat smashing all the glass etc. Not a
pretty picture. We got out of it alive and hurt but walking. The local
doctor who arrived at the scene informed us that we wouldn't want to go to
the local hospital "as the standard of nursing care is not good".
Fortunately the motor was fine and after lying up for 8 days we managed to
get the roof propped up on a metal rod and without a windscreen, lights,
indicators and a few other things drove on to Zimbabwe (Victoria Falls)
where we rested up again, before hitching up our caravan (trailer I think
you call it in the States) which we had left there, and then driving in that
condition ever so slowly back home to Durban on the east coast of South
Africa. We made a pretty picture I can assure you.

Our precious landy is still in our garage being fixed by my husband who has
learnt in the process how to panelbeat and weld aluminium. Having stripped
the vehicle to its chassis everything possible has been rustproofed and by
the time he has finished, it will probably be a most sought after vehicle.
He is not a trained mechanic or artisan, but simply a practical chap who is
able to apply his mind to the problems and respond to the challenge. As
our insurance cover was not valid for Zambia, we weren't covered so this is
the only way things can be done. Incidentally to add insult to injury, the
trip through Zambia was a "short cut" from Lake Kariba back to Victoria
Falls going on the "tar" rather than on some very corrugated dirt road on
the Zimbabwe side.

The consensus of opinion from experienced drivers, in which category I do
not include myself, is that power steering and coil springs make it
relatively easy to roll a Land Rover. But it is still a great vehicle for
travelling in Africa. But I guess I won't be offering to spell my husband
again.

Regards all
Denese Jordan

PS If you are interested in his reaction, no he didn't kill me afterwards.
In fact he was remarkably nice about it. May be we were both just too
grateful to come out of that alive.

Subject: Petrol Tank

<Question: 109 s/w leaking fuel tank.

First, it's not safe to fill the tank with water and work on it. Take it
to a radiator shop and have them "cook" it over night. This tank is actually
two seperate parts: one is the tank and two is the support cum skid plate.
On mine (1966 SIIA s/w) the bottom of the tank rusted-out and was leaking
from the side and around the drain plug area. I took the tank apart and
while wire brushing found "all" the holes. I took it to the welders and they
used the old tank and some parts (i.e. the filler pipe, etc.) and made a new
tank and welded the support cum skid plate back on. It has been working fine
for about 13 years. Maybe these new gas tank sealers that are advertised in
Hemmings Motor News would also seal the tank part. But,if they don't, it's
very hard to remove them to effect welding repairs.

Mostly yes. You will have to move some body fastening points on outriggers
and body supports on frame (p/u) are too high, they have to be lowered. This
is what I had to do with my frame change on my SIIA 109 s/w to military one
ton frame. The rear gas tank fitting points were OK for the fuel tank.

Hey!

Last week, a lone Ford Explorer snuck onto the newly-operational test =

It made it over the first hill. Got wheels off the ground on the second =

so severe (C-section frame) that the DOOR COULDN'T OPEN!!!

Even w/dealer personnel, no forward progress.

In desperation, they managed to back him down.

But not before he hung up and tore off the exhaust!!!

Subject: New Chassis

Well, it seems that my Rover will be needing a new chassis before long. I
just replaced it two years ago, but that was when I lived in Georgia and had
no hesitation with putting in a 67 SerIIa chassis (my driver needing the
chassis is a 72 SerIII). Living through two Massachusetts winters has
brought about a bit of oxidation.

So my question is this.....is the coil spring conversion really worth it? I
am quite happy with my Landy now...except I would like a bit more height and
controllably softer ride. Mass roads will beat a body to death with stock
shocks.

My first problem is that I have 15" wheels with 30x9.50 tyres. Will going to
16" wheels and 33" tyres affect much? I could also use the extra road speed.
My second is stock shocks. Has anyone tried Ranch 9000 shocks on a Series?
I have ridden in a D90 with these and was quite impressed. No height
advantage, but you can go from Caddy suspension to brick truck suspension
with the press of a button.

I am a touch purist, so the coil conversion sort of turns me off (plus the
$6500 cost). But I would be willing since the new stuff is still mostly LR.
With the Ranchos I could get the softer ride, and with the taller tyres I
could get the clearance. (How large can I safely go with tyres?)

BTW, Downeast was great. Sorry if I didn't get a chance to meet you. I was
the guy in the Poppy Red Series III 88' with soft top and early D110 fender
flares (had to put them on in NC to cover the slightly wider rock climbers).
If you were there and subscribe, describe your vehicle so I can put your
name with you vehicle.

My Carribean geography is pretty feeble - have you been affected by
Bertha? I'm keeping a close eye on the forecast, as it seems possible
that we may receive a visit this weekend. ARRRRGH!! It just occurred to
me that my recon engine is on a ship scheduled to arrive in Boston on the
17th, and there's a hurricane churning up the Atlantic.

I rebuilt the carb on my '73 Ser III 2.25l engine when I restored the truck
some 3000 miles ago. Soon after getting it running I had problems with the
engine flooding and stalling on inclines. That was fixed by taking the carb
back off and apart and sanding the mating surfaces (the joint faces) flat.
It ran great for many months, but today the truck would not idle, backfired
loudly through the exhaust on decel, and in general gave symptoms of running
too rich again. Off came the carb again and again the top cover was warped.
A .005 in. (or .13mm) feeler gauge would slide around beneath my straight
edge. I got out the glass plate and sandpaper and milled it flat and tonight
the truck runs well again. But, what happens in another few thousand miles?.
Would a new carb top or a new carb be a permanent fix. Are replacement
parts any better heat treated, if that's the problem?
What to do?

Is the oil pressure light sender something you can
fix/adjust or is it a straight replacement? Mine now
seems to be on even when the oil pressure is happily
at 60psi (and oil happily drooling everywhere when
you take the valve cover off)

When a frame is galvanized, does the inside get
galvanized as well?

Any lurcher owners out there?

Galvanising is a process whereby the frame is dipped in a
rather hot bath of zinc etc. Being a fluid, it will definately
coat the inside of the frame...

I'm probably in the market for an SII/SIIa. I'm looking for a reasonably

much are you asking, and what condition is it in? Thanks!

Which dealer is it? I've had bad experiences with Paul Miller in Parsippany but been
relatively pleased with LR Paramus (Prestige). Is there a new dealer in Summit? As for
other dealers, LR in Woodbridge is now owned by Paul Miller (I assume the same lousy
service). I've been told by a couple of folks that Schneider & Nelson in W Long Branch
NJ is excellent. I've heard the Zumbach (sp?) in Manahattan is O.K. but expensive.

Will the "Scott" that posted this inquiry please email me direct or
post your email address here........I will send you a file on the

frustrating. Thanks.

Hi richard,
A rich engine usually cools the engine due to the excess petrol, so I
would think that the black exhaust would be due to the burnt oil.

Your father might also be commenting about the 'old' leaded fuel days
when you could check the mixure by looking at the colour of the lead
deposits in the exahst.
I know the here in the netherlands it's getting more and more
difficult to find leaded fuel, and using unleaded doesn't give as much
colour difference especially when the engine consumes oil. (mine
nearly uses more oil than petrol!).

About running warm: check to see if you're not running to lean, but
more likely check your ignition timing, especially the points for
pitting.
Good luck and greetings from tulip country,

Could be. I get the usual blue smoke on startup. Also, with the overheating,
I think I'm getting more blue smoke than usual. (more oil seepage
around the rings, is the theory)

I'm still running on British 4 Star. I thought most Series Land Rovers
were still leaded or diesel. I understand unleaded head conversions are
available though...
Over here, the three main types (ie. available at all garages) are Diesel,
Unleaded, and 4 Star. 2 Star
(a leaner leaded petrol) has disappeared totally, and (virtually?) every new
petrol car uses the unleaded. If I needed a new head, I'd probably go
for an unleaded head. Saves a little bit on fuel prices (unleaded tax is
less) and a tad greener (not that it makes much difference with
the oil consumption!)

Running warm is almost certainly a cooling problem. The radiator is being
replaced as I type (my father's having fun!). If not, then perhaps I really
am running warm.
I recently had my ht electrics civilianised - ie. the points have only done
about 400 miles, so I hope they're not pitted already.
I am missing occasionally when idling, although I do have the hand throttle
set very low. Is it possible to set this too low?
I used to have it set higher, because it would cut out, but now the electrics
are sorted, I've put it down.

I was thinking of having it checked by one of these computer tune people.
See if that can find my faults. Carburettor might need cleaning too??
Oh, and while we're at it, the engine almost invariably cut outs with a cold
start. Usually, as soon as I put my foot on the accel. A second restart is
usually good enough - unless I've knocked the tank-changeover-switch! :-)

My series1 2.25 petrol is running great on both unleaded (octane 98) and
LPG autogas.
The only conversion I have are hardened valves and seats.
On the road I use gas, off road and when more power is needed I switch to
petrol.
It saves me a lot of money since I drive ~1200 km each month.
I use about 1 liter on 6 km, (gas or petrol), and 1 liter of oil on 300 km.

greetings
Jody.
