Subject: Wanted: Soft Top for S2A SWB

Following an attack by a very heavy handed "friend", my son has now got a
large rip in the soft top of his 1960 S2A.SWB.

Repairing it will be awkward, because of where the rip is, so he is in the
market for a second hand top, at a reasonable price.

If anyone has one they want to sell, or knows where one can be acquired, that
is travelling distance from West London, England, please let me know via the
forum, or e-mail me direct.

Thanks
Paul Hancock, Landrover Owner's Father (Does that make me a grandad?)

Subject: Access Woes, Charouleau Gap, Tucson, Az (Long response)

This is long, political and only peripherally Land Rover:

Just as a point of clarity, someone who has lived in Arizona only since 1970 is
NOT considered to be a "native" out here. I have been a resident of Arizona
only since 1961 but I am married to a real Arizona "native" (who is a third
generation born in Arizona "native" and who's grandparents moved here from back
"East" in the 1880s). I am not a gun carrier (but I own a few), I am not a
hunter (but used to hunt in Michigan), I am an enviromentalist "tree-hugger"
(that's one of the reasons I drive my Land Rover into the out-of-the-way-
areas) and I vote "liberal" if the issue warrants it. The people in Arizona
who have consistently voted "conservative" (i.e., "The Earth is mine to do with
it whatever I want".) have mostly come from "back East" and in increasing
numbers since the early 1970s. Gated retirement communities trying to keep
everyone off their surroundings is a really typical "conservative" idea.

I fully support public access to appropriate public lands. Developers here in
Tucson (and the rest of Arizona) have consistently fought providing public
access to trailheads and existing old roads. One Tucson developer has tried to
years to close access to the extremely popular Pima Canyon hiking area. The
owner of the company is, by the way, an arch conservative.

Public access to National Forests, state land and BLM land is a big issue out
here in Arizona and the rest of the West. Uncontrolled 4x4 use on desert lands
causes irreparable damage -- just look at some parts of the southern California
desert -- and should be controlled. Just because these areas are designated
public land doesn't mean everyone has a "right" to drive a 4X4 on them. Some
land should never see a track except for footprints. (I backpack, too). Some
land has had continuos wheeled vehicle use and should remain open. Just
because some idiot takes a bulldozer and carves a new access road into public
land (e.g., what has been done with increasing regularity in SE Utah) doesn't
make it an access "right".

"The Sagebrush Rebellion" of the early 1980s out here was not about public
access to public lands, it was about the "right" to sell mining claims to
Canadian gold and copper mining companies for $100 per year (under the 1872
Mining Act) and allow them (actually subsidize them) to extract public minerals
at HUGE profits and then leave the National Forests a complete mess that no one
could use.

Letter writing and telephone calls to public policy makers is an effective
method to solve this problem, but assuming everyone with one common interest
(like 4X4ing) fits a political niche is only counter-productive. And I
*personally* think that organizations with names that suggest speed,
environmental destruction or a "screw-you-attitude" are also
counter-productive.

My two cents worth. (Actually more like $1.50)

Chris Fisher's 4.6 V-6 swap sounds nice, but I still maintain that 5
grand will do a nice FI v-8 swap, it will for me in any case. The keys
are 1: Do it yourself. 2: get away from the idea that if something
isn't available in a catalog then it isn't available. 3: Shop the want
adds for those little parts. The bulkhead doesn't have to be cut. I
feel that I am the best person to take care of all the little details
that make an engine swap the best it can be because no one else cares
about my Rover as much as I do.

Subject: Now what do I do?

Hi All

Well I changed my fuse block for a new one. Put all the wires back the way
they came off.
Now when I step on the brake and let it up (ie at stop lights, slowing down
etc.) the Alt light comes on!
It goes back out if I rev the motor. I check for a voltage drop, none found.
The brake lights work fine.
Yes I did a gen to alt convertion some time ago with no problems till now.

I think I may have solved it but won't know till I drive It again.
Is it normal for every thing in the car to run off one 30 amp fuse? (except
the interior lights that is.)
I am at a loss help!!!

Re. Northern New Mexico . . . SPYDERS@aol.com

The Carson National Forest will be the most "fun" . . . stop in Santa Fe if you
have time for a visit. Maps, etc. available at the Ranger Station. More info.
on arrival . . . no permits needed but compliance with current FIRE DANGER will
be necessary. There are a few challenges but mostly clean and pristine forrest
with camping at will (provided you understand cows and their mates, the Bull.
Take care with "Mr. Lucas" and have a sense of humor . . . we have no other

Re. Crested Butte . . . mcdonoug@worldnet.att.net
I'll be going so e-Mail your dates and times . . . perhaps we can caravan on up
. . . camping is the plan to date . . . schedule is unsure at the moment . . .
at any rate I'll see you there.

NOTE . . . lots of rocks and climbing . . . top heavy will be a disadvantage as
most of the CO high trails (13 to 15K) are "original" gold mining burro and mule
trails converted by "Jeeps" (someone had to do it) in the 50's and 60's to
off-road . . . usually down hill on one side with 4 to 5K drops on both sides
and rocks.rocks.rocks that the above (quadrupeds) could step over on the high
side. Keep the weight low and have the ride and the views of your lifetime.
AAA will be reluctant to tow from the trails (usually one way only) so be
prepared mechanically. There is no other way to see the USA from above, unless
you want to walk or fly. A great group of Land Rover people represented by
Series 1 to Disco owners with CD's and Air (body work beware! . . . remove the

challenging. Hope to meet a lot of you there . . . INTERNET names to faces. In
a1967 109 Safari with a 292cc Chevy conversion with OD (I like the on road
"comfort"/speed in the mountains and the power/torque off road) . . . purists
(2.25 L Land Rover) can look the other way while enjoying the ride . . . I'll
stay in the shadows and keep the bonnet down.

Re. "All Season King" tyres . . . jve@phaseone.dk

In USA sold by General Tire . . .LT 235/85 R16 M+S . . . have them on a 67' 109
Safari . . . a semi-agressive tire that wears . wears . wears and does extremely
well at reduced pressure (20 lbs.-) off road in the rocks of the mountain
terrain of CO (National Rally) + Northern NM and is quiet and handles well on
road at 40 lbs. front and 36 lbs. rear, on the 109. Interesting that they are
found world wide. A tire/wheel (spokers) conversion that is to be recommended
for on/off road.

Subject: Micro-Machines (LR Toy)

Discovered at Toys'R'Us while perusing Hot Wheels and Matchboxes:
Micro-Machine collections, assortments of well... micro vehicles.
One group labeled "#6 Mud Trackers" contained 5 off-highway trucks the
star of which is a Series III 109 regular with a full tilt. Price of
the set is $5, or $1 per vehicle.

The level of detail is very convincing and proportionatly the truck is
correct. The front bumper has military over-riders, headlamps recessed
in the fender panel with two sidelights each, and a recognizable Series
III grill. The bonnet sports a spare, and has hinges at the windscreen.
From the side each body panel is delineated including the rocker panel,
and the air intake, hinges, rear view mirrors, door handles, divided
door windows and tilt windows can be seen. The tilt is scored for a
canvas like effect. The rear has a tailgate with bars, hinges, rear
lights and bumperettes to be seen. The bottom even has the drivetain
 shown.

The vehicle is painted light green with a tan tilt. It has sky blue
windows, black tires with silver rims, a black radiator grill, silver
bumpers, and red tailights. 6 colors in all.

 The vehicle has a 20mm (3/4") wheelbase, and measures a scant 16mm
 (5/8") wide, 33mm (1-1/4") long, and 16mm (5/8") high ...truly micro.
Oh yes, it comes with a plastic clip to the frame to hold it while
viewing as any finger would surely obscure it.

the only odd feature is an oversize towing setup, which just proves
that even as this micro scale Land-Rovers remain funtional and are
 designed to go to work!

(OK, this doesn't compare to July 4th weekend Down East, but hey! :)

Subject: Hesitation
From: rhodesia@juno.com (Chris R. Whitehead)

Just got my 66 Series IIa back on Wednesday, looks great, engine sounds
good, but upon acceleration there is a great amount of hesitation-lack
of power. It is hard to explain, but at one stage I didn't think I'd
make it through a traffic light, because the vehicle was jerking etc.
Now the guy who restored it for me(he has worked on Land Rovers for 20+
years) and I went through the engine on Saturday. We checked the
tappets, the carburetor, timing, spark plugs, distributor(the points and
condensor are brand new). Made adjustments to the timing-what a silly
place for it, another fantastic British invention-back in the engine
where you cannot see it, and can only get to it while draped across a
hot engine(it was 112degrees in Phoenix the day we worked on it). We
adjusted the idle and the mixture, made some slight adjustments to the a
few tappets. Now he says that the distributor has too much movement in it
and he is going to replace that, but after that he isn't sure where to
look. Any suggestions would be welcome. The vehicle runs better now that
everything has been adjusted, and the hesitation isn't as bad, but once
the engine warms up, and I accelerate, I will often have to let up on
the accelerator to get rid of the hesitation.

Cheers

Subject: 4th gear poping out
Date: Sun, 7 Jul 1996 23:06:30 +-200

Hi fellow Rovers:

My Landy (1980 SIII) as been developing the nasty habit of disengaging the 4th
gear when climbing a hill (with 6 adults in it) and rolling at 60-70 Kms/h. Can I
consider this normal (!) or is my beast developing some problem.

I have no OD, all gears engage well and it only disengages when climbing hills
(it is easy to re-engage it and carry on cruising).

If you can help me I would appreciate it.

Happy Rovering
Joao Parreira
