From: ASFCO@aol.com Date: Tue, 2 Jul 1996 08:51:29 -0400 Subject: Re: CB's and electrics John; First off I would suggest you look into getting a Ham Radio License as well for more reliable communications if for nothing else. CB radio is a good means of short distance communications and can be of some help on trail rides and some limited use on the hwy. As you will hear most of the stuff on CB is not worth listening to and as a result you will find it off most of the time. I have a Cobra CB I got thru Sears for $ 62 which has the added feature of a 3 channel weather band. Thru the use of a splitter, you could use the same antenna for the scanner as well, however I would use seperate antennas. If you are using it for short distances get a thru the glass antenna. You could tap into something off your power harness however I would suggest you get power directly from the battery and use a seperate fuse block to pick up the power for your radio (s) aux lights etc..., its safer and you won't have to worry about cutting into something you shouldn't. Part of choosing where is WHO will start the "ball" > Rolling (or the Landie climing) > I Don't Know how to go about set something like this up. Yes. Hmm. Well. As someone pointed out before, LRs (at least Series) tend to be concentrated on the coasts, with a few exceptions (like colorado). You're right, though. Any national rally is likely to end up being where ever there are people willing to do the dirty work. And, it seems, there arn't high concentrations of rover people organized in the midwest. Unless it were a one-time, super spectacular 50th anniversary Amazing Rover get together, I don't see that it would draw that many people, regardless of the location. Car meets are different from other groups because people tend to want to bring their car... A weekend meet like the OVLR birthday party turns into a more than a week of hard driving from the coast if you put it in the midwest. That gets to be a pretty big investment in time and money for the individual drivers, especially those with no overdrive :-) If we're gonna do it, lets plan to do it *once* so that its worth the trip. And lets plan to do it *big* so it gets talked about for years and years. If I sent $20 last September/October or so, my membership expires in three/four months. I would have received one issue (which is what I have received in this time period). If AW manages another that's two out of four. You going to extend everyones membership so they get four issues, or just ask for more money? In the past year, every club I can think of with a newsletter has had theirs come out on time. Every club has had at least one major event and a number of smaller events. You have managed one newsletter and no events. Impressive record... ------------------------------[ <- Message 34 -> end | Table of Contents | <- Digest 960703 -> Archive Index | <- Browser -> ]

Down Dixon, down ....good boy! :) You are always welcome to send us more money; however, for the time being the plan is to extend memberships until the proper number of issues have been published. At least, I will make such a motion at the July 21 meeting. : In the past year, every club I can think of with a newsletter has : had theirs come out on time. It's no secret that the LROA is having growing problems, brought on in part by it's sheer size, diversity of membership, and geographic vastness. The comparison to smaller homogeneous clubs in one locale is not appropriate. The LROA is struggling with a different agenda and is coming around to serving its 850+ members with a renewed organization and continued enthusiasm. Stay tuned! I too would be interested to hear about performance mods. My own suggestions would be: Bigger carb, raise compression, branched exhaust and grind valve ports for better mixture and exhaust gas flow. High-lift camshaft? High far do you go? Please post! What about fitting a turbo-charger? It seems to me the 2.25 engine, based on the diesel sub-assembly (as far as I know), should be quite OK for high compression pressures. And also, a turbocharger will boost mainly the high-end torque, so less likely to break half-shafts, but better cruising performance. Am I right? Hi all, When I bought my SIIa, the PO gave me a huge pile of spares including a turbo with manifold and Stromberg carb to match.... He used to run it on his 109 SIII until he swapped in a diesel. He told me that the turbo ran great and that he never had any trouble with it. He also told me that he gave a few v8 converted Land Cruisers a scare on the Freeways :) (Drop out the O/D and plant the right boot) :) :). He drove all through Western Australia with turbo and didn't have any complaints. As for modifications to fit it. He had to get a needle for the stromberg custom made (They are stepped and none of the standard needles were quite right). He also fitted water injection to cut down on pre-ignition at high rpms. Then he just modified the exhaust manifold to loop back through the turbo and then down and out. He said that I really should put it on the 88 as it made a huge difference, with little impact on fuel usage (which I am not sure about). The only thing I would have to do is drop the compression of the head a little, and bolt it on. He also cautioned me that the standard clutch can barely cope when the boost is up (ie it won't let go, but if you bump the clutch then it won't get a grip until you back off)... He also recomended better brakes :). He used to run it upto 8lbs boost (with a pressure gauge on the steering column), but said that higher than that you risked the destroying the motor. Being young and foolish, I am hoping to fit it again sometime before the end of the year, I just have to get the compression lowered on the spare head I have, the turbo serviced (it has been sitting for a few years), and a kit for the carb. I be sure to give a report on the grin factor once the project is complete.
