Date: Sat, 29 Jun 1996 10:38:31 -0400 (EDT) From: Chris Witzgall <witzgall@internext.com> Subject: The 'Ole Tranny woes I recently replaced the transmission in my 1970 IIa 88. The "new" one was a partially rebuilt unit I bought from a fellow LRO. He gave the unit a good cleaning and replaced the seals. He said that the gears looked good, and from what I can see, they are not worn. The problem is that it won't stay in second gear for more than a few seconds before lots of grinding noises force me to engage the clutch. It is definetely comming out of gear. I pulled off the top cover and inspected the detent spring, (looked ok) and the selector fork. Ther was a little wear on the fork, so I pulled the one from the old transmission (broken lay shaft) and installed it. No Luck. It pops out of gear even if I hold the shift lever in place. Does anyone have any ideas on what could be the trouble?? I just ran out to the barn and got my workshop manual (Part No. 4611, TP/344/A, December, 1963) to see if I could make good on my promise. Sure enough, there's the claimed recipe, sans special tools that everybody is talking about, on page T-19. Keeping in mind that this may not apply to the MODERN Rivnuts you are dealing with, the essentials of the recipe are as follows: "Use a pilot drill first, then drill the front face only of the cross-member to 27/64 in. (10 mm). Fit a nut and plain washer to a 5/16 in. U.N.F. set bolt having a threaded length not less than 1 1/2 in. (38 mm). Drill or file the thread clear, of a 3/8 in. U.N.F. nut, and slide it on to the set bolt, then screw on a Rivnut. Adjust so that 1/8 in. (3 mm) of the set bolt extends beyond the Rivnut and then lock the assembly. Insert the Rivnut into the hole in second cross-member and then, keeping the set bolt and distance nut stationary, turn the 5/16 in. U.N.F. nut clockwise 2 1/4 turns. Remove set bolt, nut, plain washer and distance nut." If you want me to mail or fax you a copy of this page, so you will have the benefit of the accompanying diagrams, tell me where you want it sent. From: Solihull@aol.com Date: Sat, 29 Jun 1996 20:30:44 -0400 Subject: Re: partnumbers early turbodieselpistons Luc, if you are considering intercooling, and tweaking the fuel pump for more power, please get forged pistons. I think your mechanic/machinist was referring you to "hepolite" pistons as a brand of alloy to get. I don't know if they're forged or not. Find a copy of a book on Turbocharging by Hugh MacInnes, published by HP Books. In it there are formulae for calculating how much tweaking the fuel pump will need to supply enough fuel for the denser air charge, after intercooling. The above opinions are based on my experience with Peugeot and Volvo (VW-Audi) turbodiesels. Can't say I've had the pleasure of working with a Rover diesel, yet, except for one I dismantled to use the block on a 2.25 gas rebuild. Cheers!! We have a monthly news letter/sometimes every other month. Depending on news and events. Members scattered about the state. We do not charge for trips or events. We do have a $25.00 a family/yearly dues. This is to cover the cost of supplies, U.S. mail, Printer ink etc. We will be joining the Az. Assc. of 4x4 clubs, which costs $25.00. I will be looking into membership in the Land Rover Club(s), National Register, or what ever it is called. We are currently active in sitting on committee, to keep and provide access to the Charouleau Gap, which was closed, after public access across private land for 27 years, by the land owners. The state has offered to put an access on public land, however, a local retirement community has taken it upon themselves to fight it totally, endangering any future use by any groups.
