You know, that's interesting... my 1968 SIIa has a horn button on an arm to the
side of the column (even matches the parts in the manual so it's LR spec.)
Must of been patched on by a PO when the central horn button stopped working.

Thanks for the info

For those in the Baltimore Area, there's a Central Tractor on 140 between Finksburg and
Westminster (I can get the number for those interested). They're just down the street
from Tractor Supply Company, another place to check out... same basic stock as CT.

OK all you experts. What is the best cleaner for aluminum? I tried an
acid wash on my aluminum canoe and it etched it so that I was never able
to shine it again. I want to do this piece of aluminum so it can be
cleaned, polished and finally protected. I found a perfect 12 foot
aluminum boat that fits the safari rack like it was a factory accessory
so now in keeping with the new paint and shine (I know you purests don't
like that finish :-) ) I want to get the boat in shape but I don't want
something that will run off the boat in the rain and wreck my new Land
Rover pint job! Dave VE4PN

I had two different FWH's on when i got my 109. One was a strange
looking "napkin ring" that leaked pretty bad. The other one was an
old Mayflower (MAP). Quite a heavy lump from the series II days. I
would use it if i had the other one as well. This one wasn't leaking.
You will need a spanner to lock/unlock.

Subject: partnumbers early turbodieselpistons

I am recently started to overhaul a 2.5 TD wich came from a ex-Camel Trophy
110 (1989 Brazil). The engine number is : 19J16243C .
The guy who rebuild the block told me that he could not locate the partnumber
off the pistons, (ETC 7160). He said that he had never seen such pistons
before. He said also that I shoud use rings that are epolight. What will
this mean ? I didn't buy the pistons that he could supply me, because I
think that I can find them cheaper in Great-Brittain. I know that the
engine was never reconditioned before. The parts catalogue says that the
partnumber should be : ETC 8676. But what about the old ones ? I can't use
the old ones, because I
now need 0,020" oversize and besides that the old ones have many little
cracks and are also not hardened. I'm wondering also if it should be
possible to use pistons from a 200 TDI, because I'm also thinking off
fitting a Intercooler and tuning the fuelpomp to get more power. You could
suggest me to just put the new ones in and forget about the old ones, but I'm
very curious about the "history" off the old ones. So if somebody can
throw a light on this matter, I would appreciate it enormious.

With full regards, Luc Rokegem (Belgium)

Subject: RR 90k Service

Alan Duboff asked what he can expect to replace on his RR at 90k miles...
Well Alan, my 89RR just passed 95K. I replaced the water pump, which had a
slight leak, as well as all water hoses and the thermostat. If your Rover is
wandering a bit on the highway you may want to replace the suspension
bushings. One word here: polybush. I also upgraded my shocks and springs
with the Old Man Emu kit. The thing now handles like a dream.

All of this work is easily done in the garage without any specialized tools
except for the bushings. Those are a Land Rover adventure in themselves, and
should rightfully have a website all to themselves, with a video clip of a
hydraulic press launching a panhard rod 80 feet in the air. It was
beautiful, man...like one of those baton-twirling girls tossing that thing
at a New Years Day parade...

Power steering boxes and pumps seem to hit their MTBF around 90-100k miles,
too. Keep an eye on yours. Good preventive maintenance will make for a nice,
peaceful, happy Rover. Good luck!

Subject: Oil Delivery Question.....

Hello all.....

I'm not on the RRO list.....and I hope I won't be spammed for posting
this question here.......

On my 88 Rangie, the oil pressure light came on some two years and
twenty thousand miles ago.......and stayed on. After replacing the
sending unit at the filter housing and also the oil level
indicator/sender in the sump, to no avail, I gave up. Periodic checks
with a manual guage shows 'book spec' readings.....so I've felt
relatively safe and just learned to ignore the glaring red lamp on the
dash panel......and, with some twenty thousand miles, he should have
locked down long ago with no oil pressure.

But, heres what bothers me: Peering into the oil filler hole on the
valve cover with or without the engine running....the one visible
rocker arm and valve spring just 'looks too dry'.......not completely
dry, but enough to make me uncomfortable. Should the rocker arms,
shaft, and valve springs not be literally dripping with oil, or
slinging oil while the engine is running? I'm hoping someone with a
Rangie will peer into theirs and tell me what they see. Maybe I'm just
too paranoid......and too cheap to buy that little black box under the
dash that's made by Jaeger......which, since I do show proper oil
pressure, I believe to be the culprit of my oil light problem.

Thanks folks......and glad to have the list back up and running.
