that smells just like lighter fluid (zippo kind, not charcoal) Yiou might try
that.

Yes indeed, that is the thing to use. It's called Naptha, or sometimes VM&P
Naptha. I believe it's the same as zippo fluid and white gas (Coleman Stove
Fuel) I wouldn't switch 'em around though, best just to buy a can at the
paint/hardware store. It will remove adhesives, ink, oil based paints, etc, from
surfaces that would be ruined by other solvents. We use it here in the Museum to
remove paint and other blemishes from plexiglass. It doesn't fog the plexi like
the other solvents. I've also used it to remove felt-tip marker ink from CD's
oil paint from carpets, and duct tape goonk from around the window on my Honda.
Buy it, you'll like it.

Cheers

The price gregspitz found on the 93 d110 is well within the parameters here
in metro Atlanta. 'specially with all the stuff on it. Will these trucks
never begin to really depreciate?

Hmm. I thought 38k was fairly reasonable. That's what you'd pay for a new D()
with all the necessary kit. Besides most 110's are over 40k that I've seen
lately.

See ya!

Not necessary. This stuff is used in frame shops for removing pictures from
their backings. Just use the naptha, that's what all the body shops use.
Besides, it's not "LRO-like" to buy expensive cans of goop for one-time jobs,

Howdy Folks !,
The question to the gearbox gurus is:

I have a SIII mated to a 2.5 Indirect Injection Turbo diesel engine.
It was junping out of 1st gear in low range down steep hills as well as
reverse gear under extreme load.
So...
Recently I re-did the g/box, replaced the brass bush, 1st/2nd, 3rd/4th synchro
a gear or two and the reverse gear and shaft.

Reverse is fine, but it still jumps out of 1st (not as badly though) and
when it is in second gear it grinds ever so gently (chike, chieke, chieke etc)
and badly in reverse under load (CHIEKE, CHIEKE,CHIEKE) Sounds like it is
not in gear properly but it definetly is.

What should I specifically check for when I take it out AGAIN?

Well, with that in mind, I'd suggest splashing some gas or old gas/oil mix (like for a
chainsaw) and burn the old sticker off, or alternatively use some old sand paper and
sand it off. ;-)

I think it was Barnett that recommended the bimini top for my D90... I
installed the top and absolutely love it. My new dillema seems to be
whether to remove the windows, or not. (Apparently, during those really hard
rain storms, they actuall keep out some of the rain. :>)

My question is this: in order to install the bimini top, I attached two
small brackets to the top of the rear rail (on either side of the rear
window binding posts) and just last night I realized that it wasn't aluminum
that I drilled into to put the self-tapping screws in. Do I need to do
anything to protect that metal that I drilled through? (ie. run clear
silicone caulking into the four holes...)

I broke one on on my 109 SIII, and took the other one off as well.

I had previously noticed that the people who compete in their vehicles
tend not to have straps.

After several months and a couple of competitions later - I've still had
no problems

Hi all,

Just got the new washer jets and wiper blades. Wipers work fine but when I pushed the
washer button, the washer pump ran fine but after about 2-3 minutes, the only liquid
that came out of the jets was a miserable little dribble which puddles around the washer
jet. No spray at all. Does this mean the pump has bad seals (no pressure) and needs
replacing or is there another explanation.

Thanks for the help.

If you just got new jets, and are using the old pipes, you could well have
crud in the pipes which is now blocking the new jets. This happened to me
when my pump went west, the pipes developed an ecosystem of their own.
Try back blowing the lot,I used an old environmentally-definitely-hostile
aerosol of IsoPropyl Alcohol I had lying around.Worked a treat after a couple
of blasts. The can had one of those little tube nozzle thiungs on it.

There are several "adhesive remover" products that are available and
would probably work well. Another possibility is something that the
window tint people do to remove old tint from windows that have the
defroster wires on them. Basically, they cut out a plastic garbage bag
in the shape of the window, spray soapy water on the window film, then
attach the plastic bag to the soapy drenched film. Then they leave it in
the sun for an hour or so, and the water (theoretically) soaks into
behind the film and loosens it.

Maybe a combination of the two methods, use adhesive remover instead of
soapy water, and cover it with a plastic garbage bag to keep it moist
and allow it to soak in.

Good luck!

We had a look at one that was parked by the side of the Fordyce trail last

very strange to me was the right front shock is outside the coil spring and
the left front is inside it. .... Hmmm.

I wonder what the gearing is.

Proper type of Fire Ex for a vehicle: Type B (flammable liquids) and C
(electrical). Most of these are type A (wood + paper) as well. For cleanliness
you can go for a Halon (difficult to find these days) but for enviro
friendliness and (a lot) less expense go for a dry chemical type....one that
comes with a metal mounting bracket. A suitable size would be (in my opinion, I
go looking for fires, though) at least a couple pounds of extinguishant.

Electrical fire? In a Land Rover?

Robert,
Congratulations on your purchase of a dream. I wish I was in
your shoes. My wife convinced me to have kids first (#5 now!). So I
drive a 16 year old Peugeot turbo diesel with a bad smoking habit. If I
had a rover, since my wife and kids are gone for a month, I would have
gone to some of the remote hot springs I have been looking at visiting...
Try gunk's tar and bug remover. It worked well on removing duct
tape and residue of duct tape off our dodge caravan. Of course, try it
on your paint first, test to see that it won't melt your finish, etc.

Subject: IIA Voltage Regulator Adjustment?

Item Subject: cc:Mail Text
Does anyone know the proper (or at least a good one!) procedure for
adjusting the voltage regulator on a late model IIA? This is the regulator
with two relays and two adjustment screws visible on top of the unit. The
vehicle has a generator (no alternator). I have seen a procedure in an old
Haynes book however that regulator had more than two relays and just looks
different from mine.

What sort of trouble are you having with it? I went through this about a
year ago, and the guys at RN said if its bad, its bad - they're a pain
to adjust correctly, ie its more than the typical home mechanic could
do correctly. This may not apply to you, of course.

On a correctly working system, when you first start the truck, the ammeter
bounces to about +15, then settles to about +2 after a short bit. If you
get the ammeter needle pegging in relation to the revs, or if the charge
light is on when you shut the motor down and pull the key, the VR is fried
(two things that have happened to me).

What a scam! I can't stress enough DON'T GIVE SOMEONE MONEY WITHOUT GETTING THE TITLE.
Without the title, you'd have to fight it out in court IF you could catch the guy.
For something like a D110, I'd spend the extra couple hundred and fly there to see it in
person and personally take title of it.

This kind of scam goes on in all kinds settings (like building barns...don't ask). In
general, get it in writing (in this case the title) whenever you're dealing with
significant cash.

It so happens that the summer intern in my office over heard me talking
about how unobtainable the Michelin 4x4 XPC 235/70R16 tyres were for
the Range Rover, and she asked what the difference was between that
and the Land Rover, and then asked me if I'd heard this Range Rover joke.

Evidently at one of her HBS (Harvard Business School) classes, they were
looking over a case study from Range Rover, and there were these two
RR marketing guys there. Somewhere during the discussion one of the
women says something about the discussion and adds, and I have a joke to

 Q.	Whats the difference between a porcupine and an Range Rover ?

 A.	The pricks on the outside of a porcupine.

Over the weekend, I saw what Robert Davis' "Mercruiser" conversion could do.
Basically, this is the GM "Iron Duke" four-banger with 140 hp. It is
*shorter* than the Rover 2.25, and with re-camming, porting and polishing,
it can turn out *160* hp. Just don't do what Robert did late at night
whilst towing home an 88 from Bowie. He neglected to push the dip stick all
the way down - leading to the panicked addition of four quarts that were
promptly appllied to the frame, the Rover being towed and the next nine
vehicles....

He's off the list right now, so I can relay E-mails. Cheers

What exactly is the "Iron Duke"? Was it used in cars? (Your mention of mercruiser seems to
suggest boats) I am still searching for info on specific engines that are an easy swap. So
far this GM engine seems the most promising, but I do not have enough information yet.

>What exactly is the "Iron Duke"? Was it used in cars?

The "Iron Duke" is a GM 4 cyl engine which was used in both front wheel drive
and rear wheel drive vehicles in North America. It was 2.5 l and there is
also a 3.0 l boat/industrial version still in production. The "Iron Duke"
name was superceded by "Tech IV" although the latter never really caught on.
The car/truck engine was introduced in the late mid/late 70's and was last
used around '94. The boat version continues to be quite popular. Usage
included (from memory):
70's Sunbirds (Vega derivatives)
70's Monzas, Skylarks
Jeep CJ's around 1980
Camaros/Firebirds in early 80's (I drove one which was used for some aero
testing. Very few were sold)
Citation, Phoenix, Skylark, Omega (fwd X-cars)
Celebrity, 6000, Ciera, Century (fwd A-cars)
Grand-Am, Achieva, Skylark (fwd N-cars)
S/T Pickup and Blazer/Jimmy

A number of changes were made over the life of the engine. The cylinder head
was changed to a cross flow design (intake and exhaust manifolds on opposite
sides) around 1980. Throttle body injection arrived in the early 80's. I
believe the fwd and rwd versions have some fundamental differences in the
block castings such as starter location and flange design. Check what is
needed for the conversion before buying an engine. A boat engine is also a
possibility if you don't mind the money.

Hi all

I'm trying to determine the approximate year of my Landy (1), and whether
it's a II or IIA (not as silly a question as it sounds :-)

I thought I had a IIA, but:

1. The rear axle, or maybe just the backing plates and brake cylinders, are
Series I

2. The chassis is a Series II (something to do with large drain holes under
the front spring mounts) Station Wagon (Rear tank, no hole in crossmember
behind tank for PTO)

3. The VIN sez IIA, and the number matches the 109 (Pick up, I assume, not
Station Wagon)

4. This thing was assembled locally, shipped from England as 'kits', so LR
UK can't tell me the date of manufacture based on the VIN. Which is probably
not the original VIN anyway. Also, this means that there's no serial number
on any (front or rear) spring hangers. Also no #s on the axles.

So, can we try to bracket the engine and gearbox numbers?

Engine: 151911190
(BTW, the head seems to be marked 27...2, whatsitmean?)
Gearbox: 151911439

There seems to be a pattern in the engine and gearbox #s, 1519 probably
means something, and 11190/11439 would be a sequential #, same as the
chassis numbers.

Anybody out there with similar #s?

Wouter

Nahhh! :-)

I have a Dry Powder extinguisher - bought from Halfords (UK car/bike bits
chain store), so its meant for vehicles. I think these are probably the most
common in the UK. When I bought it, my father suggested that I should have
bought a CO2 one instead - too late! His reasoning was the resulting mess
afterwards. CO2 ones are *the* ones of choice for electrics - cf. all the black
extinguishers in computer rooms.

Rescue vehicles carry foam and CO2.

Foam works by blanketing the fire in and depriving it of oxygen -
without dispersing the flamable liquid. The problem with foam is that it
wrecks fabrics!

CO2 is good if the fire is in a hard-to-reach place - like a dashboard.

I guess powder is a combination of the two, and without the fabric killing
properties...

LandRover Brakes

On an Ex-army ambulance that I used to have I found the cause of some
mysterious brake happennings to be the rear shoes jumping off the
adjusters (the adjusters were worn and the pin on the shoe slightly
bent) On occassion it would jump off - using all the brake fluid to
move that cylinder out and none left to apply any force (non-split
system) New adjusters and a replacement shoe and it was fixed.

I disagree with the comment about fixing wheel cylinders - if you get
them fitted with a stainless sleeve they never rust (like steel ones)
and don't score (like alloy ones) ever again. All you have to do is
replace the rubber seals occassionally. In Australia it costs about
the same to re-sleeve as to by new but there is a bit of stffing
around and it usually takes a few days. I have aways resleeved, and
never had to do more than replace rubbers on a re-sleeved cylinder.
