It sounds like your problem might be water pump related with the overheating problem. If you live in a large city you can find someone ot rebuild the water pump with new seals and bearings. The overheating I think you will find will go away after replacing the water puimp. I speculate that air is building up inside the block because the water pump is permitting air to seep into a closed system. Are there different catalogues out there, or only one? (This is a IIA) LRO Shop lists a IIA parts manual (their #304) which is LR #RTC9840 (April 1987). This covers IIA from '61-'72, but does not cover II. It shows the usage and part numbers circa '87. Some parts have changed over the years and some are listed simply as NLA (no longer available). LRO Shop also lists a II/IIA parts manual (their #303) which appears to be LR #605957 (December 1968). This covers both II and IIA through vehicle suffix "F" only. Some of the part numbers are now obsolete. A third possiblity for a II or early IIA is a reprint by Hydro-E-Lectric (800-448-6244) of LR #4656 (July 1964). This covers only II and early IIA. LR service parts for a particular application have new numbers due to a new part replacing an old part, and LR also changed numbering schemes several times due to mergers, etc. Is there a sub-cult for collectors of LR manuals? From: JDolan2109@aol.com Date: Sun, 23 Jun 1996 10:18:30 -0400 Subject: ? coil related problem Fred Ellsworth asked about faulty running and if that could be a bad coil. My suggestion would be to first clean up the coil itself. I've found that on 'Nicky', oil vapour coming from the rocker cover breather cap (not connected to carb or manifold) is blown back towards the bulkhead and covers everything with a very fine, almost visibly undetectable mist. When moisture is introduced to this surface, it is adsorbed, and can cause misfiring. Simply cleaning it up might solve the problem. One night mine was so bad in the rain, that after limping home, I stood there gawking at what I saw- there was some kind of bluish plasma running around and about the plug/coil wires. Hollywood special effects could not have done better! It was beautiful, but I wiped everything up and applied a silicon spray to it all (which now doesn't look too nice), and all has been well. Wiping off the bottom of the coil at the connections has become a routine maintenence procedure, as well. see 'ya at Owl's Head- I'll be in the green LR... see 'ya on the old road... I`m affraid I haven`t got the time tables but a phone call to Britsh Rail should be able to help, and the buses in Northampton run fairly frequent. As for when to arrive, I`ve never been there on a Thrusday but would imagine that mid afternoon you will find people starting to arrive. It is is a Pu 14.1111-1161 I think. The problem is that the points have burned and it now requires a good hit to make the pump work. I have been driving the past week with my son hitting the firewall with a pair of pliers to get the thing to work. I once had this happen in my first Land Rover up in the Rockie Mountains and I rigged up a running shoe and a string. I used the rubber sole like a spring and let the shoe hit the pump each time it quit. This got me home over 400 miles, but I don't recommend it :-) Does anyone have a good source of electric fuel pumps or a "good one" to sell? By the way, I finished installing my 79 GMC rear heater from an STX Rally Van, and I think it is wonderful. It fits on the rear wheel arch and it has perhaps three times the output of the Land Rover heater. I am sure anyone could get one in a wrecking yard for under $50 with the harness and three speed fan switch which can be mounted on the dash. I wish I had had this in last winter when we set the all time record for average lows for Manitoba. Does anyone have a new Weber or Zenith carb, or near new they want to sell. I see I can get one for 54 pounds for Webber and 56 for Zenith from Paddock Motors in the U.K. Has anyone imported from them? From: marsden@digicon-egr.co.uk (Richard Marsden) Subject: Electrical Problems finally solved Date: Mon, 24 Jun 96 9:24:59 BST (touch aluminium) About 10 days ago, I took the truck upto Cambridge (for a long weekend seeing Uni. friends, etc). The problems hadn't been solved completely. The change of distributor had made no difference (therefore cabling and sparks?). Thought I could risk the trip, but it decided it didn't like the M11. Had to be towed to Cambridge - so I arrived at Formal Hall in time for the trifle (a trifle too late??) Then took it to a specialist in the area (Wicken 4x4) who replaced my ht electrics with the civvie equiv. I also asked them to finish wiring my Kenlowe fan (half fitted at this point). Collected it this weekend, and the engine runs the best it ever has done, with the exception of a completely cold start - where it tends to cut out after a second or so. Restarted once or twice, and I'm fine. (could be my bad starting habits re. accel. and choke - gleaned from the previously bad electrics!) I have the fan Kenlowe recommended (12" IIRC), but find I'm running warm. Sure, I'd expect to be running warmer than previously, but coming down the M11 was just under the red line - on the red line when giving it a bit of stick whilst overtaking. This is even with the fan on over-ride - ie. the fan and thermostat work, but cooling is not sufficient in this sort of situation. Is this to be expected? They claim that passive cooling is sufficient at 20mph - is this a case of wind speed increases linearly (and hence cooling) whilst engine temperature doesn't? I'm checking things tonight - a fan wired back to front does fit the symptoms. If not, I guess a larger set of fan blades is in order? Oh, and something in the region of the tranny is leaking oil more than usual. Heat expansion of the oil? How easy is it to replace the gaskets without taking it out? I'm thinking of a winter project of replacing the gearboxes, so would prefer to wait 'til then... Going to Scotland on Friday/Saturday!
