FROM: David Brown Internet: debrown@srp.gov

I hesitate to even post this note, but have been enticed by the "looking
for a 109" traffic lately... I have a 1970 IIa 5 door station wagon,
safari top and O.D. that I've been planning to do a frame-up restoration
on. It's an 11 passenger, with a rear heater (dual heaters). The only
problem area is the frame (big surprise) but I have a replacement frame
sitting in my garage. Body is very straight, sandstone color. Really,
the frame isn't that bad, but it does have several holes in it. It
could be fixed, and I have seen worse. G-box was rebuilt about 10K miles
ago, engine puffs smoke when you start it (valve guide seals).

So, if I do sell it now, it's in "kit" form, running, and was a daily
driver for my roommate until about a week ago. In addition to the frame,
I have JUST received: all new brakes, new wiring harness (just because),
new u-bolts, Rancho 5000 shocks, poly bushings, 2 new side steps, new
rear step, and various other bits. It has all interior panels (deluxe
interior) and is in good condition except for one rear seat cushion
split, one rear seat back torn, and a small "L" shaped tear in the
headliner- about 1-inch for each "leg" of the "l" shaped tear.

James Howard and Gery Elam have seen it if you want to get an opinion on
it.

If seriously interested, I could sell, and avoid all the fun of
restoration. Otherwise... You'll no doubt be hearing all about it over
the next year or so. What kind of "offer I can't refuse" would you make?

Subject: Busted diff - false alarm

Hi all.

I don't know if anybody can see this, 'cause I don't get digests anymore (what's
going on?).

Anyway, a few days ago I posted a message about my rear diff being busted and
asked if anyone had experience in home servicing a Salisbury diff.

It turns out that the fault is a busted axle after all. The splines of the left
rear drive shaft are crushed causing the shaft to rotate in the drive flange. I
have bought a pair of new axles and flanges and I figure I'll be back on the
road during the weekend.

Happy Rovering

P.S. Is there anybody out there? Where are all the digests?

Subject: Series IIA Parts Catalog (ue)

Hi all

I need a parts catalogue. The one with the exploded drawings and lotsa
little numbers, and the tables cross referencing those numbers to what the
thing actually is. Questions:

1. Are there different catalogues out there, or only one? (This is a IIA)

2. If there are different ones, which one's the best?

3. Who do I get it from? From LRO magazine, it seems I can get one from LRO
themselves, from LR supermarket, probably from Cradocks or Paddocks, any
recommendations?

Thanks!

Is poor performance in damp weather usually due to a faulty coil? The 'ol

Any thoughts?

The Major was caught in the playground's quicksand on the 11th of June,
the Major has escaped ... Stay tuned for further details.

The T1 for Land-Rover.Team.Net (aka playground) has been acting up since
the 11th, lot's of finger pointing, no resolution that i nor the merry
band of volunteer sysadmin's is aware of but during an impromptu check
a few minutes ago it appears to be working ???

So, i'ave turned back on mail, so be prepared for a flood of E-Mail. I'll
send out a final status when i get it.

Later, Bruce.

From: Jonathan Badger <badger@tipcote.demon.co.uk>
Subject: Overdrives

Dear Landie types,

Having just fitted an overdrive to my SIII 109 six-cyl petrol beast I
can heartily agree with all the recent comments about the advantages of
having one. Despite the higher gearing I find that I am now keeping up
with most average A-road traffic, rather than holding it up! It is good
to know that at nearly 65mph I'm only revving at my previous 50mph rate.
With a bit of dexterious lever pulling you can change up through all 8
ratios available in either range if you want, but that can be seen as
being silly.

I managed to get a second-hand unit, which appears to be good. Fitting
was very easy, despite initial worries about the castleated nut on the
main shaft. As said by others the centre punch/cold chisel approach
works just fine. Don't do what I did & drop the punch into the gear
box... Luckily it was recoverd from the drain hole, so I didn't have to
take the bottom plate off of the box - thanks goodness for my colleagues
small fingers!

Fuel consumption is still under review, but intial finding seems to
point to getting 20mpg on a long cruising run - I'm running a rebuilt
top end, Kenlowe fan, free-wheeling hubs & now the overdrive, so I ought
to be getting somewhere.....

Another current subject, sound proofing - mine has just arrived today.
It is one step down from the top of the range, being the vinyl/barrier
option. Anyone ordering one of these will probably be struck off the
local Parcelforce drivers' Christmas card list - the kit weighs a ton -
well, a lot anyway..... I'll probably lose all that extra mpg 'cos of
this weight.

I'll keep you informed about "the silence of the landie".

Jonathan.

Subject: LR articles

ROAD & TRACK's occassional SUV magazine, OPEN ROAD, latest issue has 2 LR
articles.

A comparison test between the D90 SW and the new Jeep for the coil list and
an article on the 1948 LR No. 1 for the leaf list.

My favorite thing about the ROAD & TRACK/OPEN ROAD road test is the test
data sheets. They often provide a nice profile line drawing of the vehicle
showing engine, seating, etc locations in the vehicles. Nice pictures here too.

(Too bad AUTOCAR stopped doing profiles drawings some years ago, their tests
just seem lacking.)

Oh... I almost forgot! The summer 1996 issue of OPEN ROAD also has a 4 page
write up on the 87-95 RR> Buying, cost of repair, what to look for...that
kind of article. Like we don't already know.

I've been having problems recently in my 90 where after driving for a
short period of time, it will lose power and stall and not start for 3 or
4 tries, after which, it runs fine. My dealer just called me and told me
that it was a bad ignition control module. Does this sound correct? And
if so, is it part of the ECU or is it something hidden within the dash?

(This is also meant as a "heads-up" in case any other D90 owners are
experiencing this problem.)

Actually, these words where originally by Ettore Bugatti when some

Indeed, it workd well, particularly when spray painting isn't applicable. I
painted the hull with a High Volume Low Pressure sprayer, but the deck
(where the spray gun wouldn't work) was done with a roller and *foam* brush.
The trick is to keep a "wet edge" and when doing small panels on a Rover,
this wouldn't be a problem...like it was when doing the foredeck. (Besides,
that Awl-Grip paint is some particularly nasty stuff to inhale. Looks
*great*, though.) Cheers

Don't blame me, I have not seen a Series LR in real life since Mark Talbot's

But really, I just saw LRNA's latest 2 page ad in Sunday's NY Times
Magazine. It features a big mud covered LR green oval surrounded by pictures
of working LR Series and Defenders with the caption "Since 1948, we've been
selling 4x4s that are used."

By promoting the heritage of the newer vehicles these ads are probably
causing their owners to notice and recognize the older LRs.

This is an ad I would hang up in my garage.

Actually, I think Dunsfold would be a good place to get parts, too - not the
cheapest, maybe, but as one of my contacts in the UK (the one with the five
or six SI') said: "They (Dunsfold) are genuine, not like ... (name of big
advertiser)".

They are located at Dunsfold, which is a small place near Godalming, which
is near Guildford, maybe fifty miles southwest of London. If you are looking
for anything very special it might be a good idea to fax your order (+44
1483 200738), the parts manager is Glen Blakebrough. Last time we were there
we were lucky and Brian Bashall, the owner, took us to a barn with maybe
fourty historical Land Rovers and gave us a short guided tour. This was on a
Monday morning and I guess business was slow. We have never actually asked
to be shown around, but maybe they would if you did.

I can also recommend the Gaydon Heritage Motor Center. This is about 70
miles northwest of London, off the M40. Among other things you can find the
first L-R ever sold here. They also have a small off-road course where a
110D shows off.

Subject: Busted Salisbury differential

Hi all.

A few months back when I mounted my reworked cylinder head, I told a friend that
the only place in the car where I hadn't had my hands was the differentials.
Unfortunately my 109 must have heard me. This saturday I suddenly lost power on
the rear axle (starting in 1st gear on a paved road!). The car is 24 years old
and I have only had it for two years, so God knows what it's been through. I
figured it was a broken axle, pressed the yellow knob and lumped home on the
front drive with the occasional nasty clunk from the rear. At home I checked the
rear wheel drive shafts and to my surprise (and disappointment) they are both
intact. The transmission axle is also OK, but I can rev the transmission axle by
hand with both rear wheels on the ground.
SO - I have on my hands a broken Salisbury differential.
The service manual has a long list of special service tools and 1/10 mm
adjustments and this makes me somewhat reluctant to taking the damn thing apart.
I don't think that my usual special tools (a hammer and a larger hammer) will do
the job here.
My question is: Do any of you have experience with home servicing of a Salisbury
differential? Can it be done with the basic tools such as a hex key wrench set
and assorted spanners and such?

Please reply to me directly as well as to the list. I receive my digests at a
very unregular basis.

Happy Rovering

Anyway, I got a response from Jim Karantinos saying that, when he =

Rovers here. I guess I hadn't realized how scarce they were in the =
States (I was never into the 4WD thing in the States, so I can't really =
remember if I saw many LR's up there or not). Are they really that =
scarce up there? Man, I see 15 to 20 a day here (not even trying!), =
everything from SI's to SIII's (plus Range Rovers and a few Disco's), =
and the papers always have 3 or 4 LR's for sale (usually early '70s, =
mostly in the range of $3,000-US equivalent). But they don't seem to =
regard them as prized objects here. They put 'em to everyday use =
(although a 4WD is almost a necessity in some areas during the rainy =
season!). I also got mine just for everyday use. I figured, after =
having to forge 100-foot wide, foot-deep rivers in a 9-passenger rental =
van, why not get an LR for the same price as an early '70s Toyota =
Corolla!

Again, I just thought it was interesting. Also, just let me know if any =

The drive back to the States would be unforgettable...maybe not as cheap =
as shipping from England, but a hell of a lot more fun!!!!

 Hi Paul,

I'm a Series owner in Newton, MA. I've heard a bit about Mr. Rosen,
but unfortunately nothing good. Take it with a grain of salt, as I've never
spoken to or dealt with Marve Rosen on a first hand basis. At least three
people (avid Series owners) in the area gave me the advice to stay away when
I was looking for my truck.
Though I'm sure you'll hear from some of them, the main problems I
remember are Rosen's practise of advertising mint trucks just to get you "in
the door", so to speak, and that point he'll push some other trucks which
will either be overpriced, or in questionable condition.
I've heard he rides around terrific looking Series trucks with For
Sale signs. When contacted, it turns out the "For Sale" sign refers to
another lesser truck.
Again, please take this all with a grain of salt. Apparently he's
not a crook, per se, but his business practises could be questionable. It's
all second-hand info, but IMHO if anybody in the Series truck business has
any negative reputation, they're not worth the potential hassle. There are
plenty of nice examples and reputable people out there to waste your time on.
Rosen's trucks can be seen at a gas station just outside of Harvard
Square heading West on Mass Ave. The Lightweight has been there for over a
year.
Having said that, try British Bulldog down in Rhode Island (about 2
hours away). Seth, the owner, is a real enthusiast. I went down there and
spent the afternoon being entertained by his crew tearing into a Series truck
for a frameover when I was searching. While I think his trucks may be
overpriced, he does always have a few coming over from the UK, and you might
find what you're looking for.
If your looking for a high-end restoration job, check out East Coast
Rovers in Maine. They have some very nice examples, though they command very
big $$.
If you just want an original truck in decent condition, keep your
eyes on the local Want Ads. LRs do get advertised occasionally. That's where
I found mine. I was pretty picky, though, and it took half a year to find
what I wanted. Good luck. And, if you do decide to deal with Rosen, be sure
to let us know how it goes. I'd hate to be passing around bad info...

hi,

just thought I'd let people on the list know about this in case they've
been considering it. I bought a soundproofing kit from BJ Acoustics Ltd.
(advertised in LROI magazine) to fit to my 110 at the weekend.

Well, it's fitted and I can happily say it's the best 70 quid I've spent in
a long, long time. Bloody marvellous - I don't lose my voice trying to have
a conversation at 60mph any more!

I think their advert quotes a 45% noise reduction - it's certainly that at
60mph and I reckon a little more than that at lower speeds. Anyway, if anyone
has been thinking 'are they worth it?' then I can say, without question,
very definitely.

I got very good service from them too - very helpful and friendly on the phone
and the fitting instructions are crystal clear. they get my vote anyway.

now all I need is for it to be a weekend again. *monday morning yawn*

Subject: Daves Mot - the triumphant failure............

Dear All,

MoT time again and with all this rubbish flying around in England about
'should the 101 be a class seven goods vehicle' I decided to pick my testing
station very carefully. My mate said - 'I've had a word with a chap I know
and he'll do it!'

So, off I went - about 25 miles away but, I thought, the journey will be
worth it!
I arrived - the boss of the garage looked horrified. 'What weight are you
running?' - '1/2 a ton less than a Range Rover mate' I replied which I
don't think he believed. 'Ok, drive it on the ramps then'

He went round firstly with a little hammer, hitting everything - I wondered
how he was going to check the windscreen - and then he came to my jerrican
holders. Well, to be honest, if a pedestrian was hit by one of them, they
would not be brushed aside - in fact I think it would do the job properly and
would skin and fillet them in readiness for the upcoming post mortem. 'well,
I don't know - trouble is we don't have a manual for these special vehicles -
I haven't got a clue' - which didn't reassure me in the least.

We then went through the lights - I sat in because he didn't like the look of
the dashboard and 'what's that big knob for' As I turned the tail lights on
I could hear some faint tapping as he encouraged the nearside one to come on.
'Number plate light's not working' - 'hit the tailgate' - 'okay, it's on
now!' Both brake lights worked ok - if someone tells me that one of my brake
lights isn't working, I take it as a compliment that one of them IS working.
I then showed off a little and put the hazards on which impressed him no
end.

The lights at the front were in tip top condition! The windscreen wipers
were checked but he didn't ask me to turn them on at all - I think he thought
I might have been embaraced. I insisted that he saw the squirters because I
had just put the remains of a bottle of perrier water (kindly given to me by
Andrew Freeth at Chiltern Automotive in payment for half a days hard bloody
graft in his workshop - always have an excuse ready if he asks for a favour!)
in the empty bottle and I wanted to show off again.

Suitably impressed he went inside. 'Where's the other seatbelt?' Awkward
question! In my garage somewhere - I was lucky to find that one. 'I've got
to check the fuel lines' I felt another embacement coming - ''well, I
haven't decided where to put the filter yet - it's sort of floating around
somewhere down there, pointing vaguely at the front of the 101. 'It'll have
to be fixed down mate' - 'ok' - 'Is the fuel cap secure?' - 'secure? - I
can't get it off even when I WANT to get it off!'

'The brakes - is it four wheel drive?' - 'yes, permanent I'm afraid' - 'do
they work?' - 'yes, they're great' - 'that'll do then!' I started to become
more optimistic at this point. 'What colour is it?' - 'I don't really know -
white and silver I suppose' - 'What's it got on the log book?' - 'green!' -
'shit!' He didn't mention emissions at all, which was a relief.

'I've got to fail it on the missing seatbelt and the fuel filter - run it
back in next week with those done and I'll give you a ticket' - 'it's a bit
of a trek, I live miles away' - 'ok, give the failure sheet to your mate and

Thank you and good night,

Subject: Range Rover overheating/generic 3.9L water pump

Has anyone experienced an intermittent overheating problem with a 3.9L. I've
checked the thermostat, the radiator flow, upper & lower radiator hoses, and
the water pump with no success. Someone mentioned that the distributor may be
overadvancing, creating detonation, leading to excessive heat. Any ideas?

While on the subject of cooling systems, does anyone have a generic water
pump, or another inexpensive solution to water pump failure.

Subject: tow hooks

Hi all, welcome back...

[Just want to say thanks to Dixion and Trevor and a few mystery guests of OVLR
for helping out with some timing things while the major was away. Hope the
OVLR birthday party had the kind of weather we're having here...]

OK, tow hooks. My father in law wants me to help him pull a few tree stums
(medium small - from cedar trees) with my 88. Since I put the new frame on,
I haven't added any tow hooks or any recovery/towing appendages. So, where is
the best place to mount some of the little buggers, front and rear. I was
planning to use the bolt on kind, as opposed to having them welded.

I'd just like some feedback before I go drilling holes - I don't have much
experience towing things, and no experience doing anything like this with
the LR.

Subject: Adjusting mixture on Zeneth carbs

Stupid question #467: Which way to turn the mixture screw on the Zeneth for
richer? I assume that bringing the screw out, i.e. ccw, is richer, correct?

Doesn't seem to be making a wit of difference one way or another, I do have
a new screw, but I think I'll check the float again, too...

David, I assume you mean Billing UK & not Billings Montana.
I've got a camp site reserved at the meet. I'll be in a blue pup tent
without car.

In regards to your starter, we have had ours replaced three times. Each time
however, the starter went out after fording deep rivers and holes. The old
starters will get wet and begin to corrode. Finally, a Bosch starter was put
in by Land Rover, and the problem has subsided. If you know of anything else
let me know at Lil Red 90 @ aol.com. Maybe, it has something to do with the
color of the vehicle. :-)

Teri, Ive been to Billing for the last 2 years and can assure you
that if its anything like previous years you won`t be
disappointed. All the mjor advertisers in the LandRover Owner
magazine are there (many with special offers) including various
tyre suppliers who are geared up with a full fitting service. As
for used parts you will be spoilt for choice, you can get anything
from engines/gearboxes to a castle nut. It is also worthwhile
going for a walk around the campsite as many of the LR owners have
bits and pieces for sale. A word of advice though get there early.

                        Maybe see you there. Chris
